Never mind that the extremists hate hybrids; the townfolks only see a potential threat, that Aminah is someone who will turn on them should the Alkidike ever attack or cause trouble.
She must confront the villagers and clear this up before words turn to actions and potential bloodshed.

Part 1: Returning Home
Aminah tilted back her chin, watching the sky shift and peak through the green leaves overhead. It was nice to be back. And a change from the dark dense jungles in Jauhar. She had been there months now, and so much had changed since then. She looked down at the little bundles she carried and felt her insides soften. They were the joys of her life now. Her precious babies. And they were perfect, and so small.
Jerarda had been hesitant about traveling with them when they were still like this, and even more so because she couldn’t go with Aminah, not now with all that was going on in Jauhar with the Alkidike. Jerarda had to stay, but Aminah was so insistent about the triplets meeting their grandparents. Their little baby bodies snuggled against Aminah in their slings and wraps, fast asleep. They had been so well behaved the entire journey, Aminah knew that that was its own blessing in itself. This was the best time for them, when they were small enough that Aminah could handle them all on her own. And she knew that her parents would be overjoyed to see them, to see that Aminah was well and happy and a mother now, of all things. She had packed for a week’s stay, and she was almost there already, just a little further. An hour more of walking and she would be within earshot of her hometown.
The familiar feeling and scents of the forests had their own special effect on her. She couldn’t help but smile. It was here that she had grown up, here that she had started her journey in life to where she was now and here that so many things had shaped who she had become. Her old friends were no doubt grown now, with their own children. Some, like Keilana, had started young, before Aminah had even thought about leaving Tale permanently. Her children must be near to grown by now. Funny how different their paths split without Aminah even realizing it.
It was strange though… she knew she must be close to the village by now, and she should be hearing the sounds of the market, but it was all soft and dull, the sounds of the forest much more persuasive than the village. She couldn’t understand why. She reached past the last stretch of trees and came out into the opening of the village square. The houses were plentiful, there had been more construction in the last few months, but still it was quiet.
She saw a few familiar faces milling about. The old healer woman from her childhood - it was good to see she still seemed to be doing well, and some of the wood workers she knew when she had moved into her own home in Tale; along with some faces she hadn’t seen, and not all leaf earthlings. The town had expanded since she had last been here, that was for sure. There were more shifters - no doubt left over from the migration from the last war, and oddly enough a couple of Obans.
She would wave and smile to those that made eye contact, but she was hard pressed to get anything friendly back in response. Those that used to know her would hesitate before quickly flitting their eyes away, those that didn’t would either flat out ignore her or even go as far as to give her demeaning looks. She turned her head from those, uncomfortable and unsure of what she she had done to them. Was it because she was from out of town? Were they so closed off they would resent her for leaving? She shook her head, she was more than likely imagining things.
Her parents still lived in the same old house from her memories and it was just one more thing to make her smile. She used the handles to help her climb the short steps with her babies, and took a deep breath before knocking. This is what she had been waiting for. This was the moment she could share her excitement with her parents. Her knock was answered quickly, her father coming to the door. She could hear her mother coming right behind, asking who it was that was there.
When they saw her though, it was anything but what she had expected. They looked unsure… hesitant… almost the same looks those in the square had given her when they recognized who she was. ”...I’m home.” She chimed with a forced smile. She could feel the tension but there had to be some reason for it. Her father looked either way, as if scanning to see who had seen Aminah knock before bringing her inside. Her mother’s eyes slid over the bundles around her, stopping at the antennae that poked out from their tops. ”Aminah…” She sighed out. Aminah could feel the conflict in her voice.
Aminah pulled one of the slings loose from her and held out little baby Shima. ”Surprise! You’re grandparents!” She tried to show her enthusiasm, her expectations for her big introduction so far had not gone as planned, but she wasn’t done trying yet. Surely her parents would show their joy once they realized what was going on.

Part 2: Not So Welcome
She could tell her mother was torn. She bit her lip before she reached out and took the little baby, her eyes on the antennae peeking out from her hair. She cradled the little girl in her arms and began to rock her. Her father though reached out for a chair in the kitchen. ”Aminah, I think you might not have thought through your choices very clearly…” He began, gesturing to the seat. Aminah’s mother took the seat next to her, still rocking the little baby. Aminah lifted the slings from herself and swaddled both of the other babies before holding them in her own arms. She couldn’t begin to understand where the hesitation was, but she wasn’t too sure she wanted the conversation to go any further. ”And why is that?” She asked, her defenses peaking slightly.
”Well… honey… we just… we don’t understand. Was this really the best time for them?” Her father pitched, motioning to the babies. ”They’re just… they’re so noticeable in a time like this.” Aminah began to realize what it was her parents were saying. ”Because they’re Alkidike…?” She retorted. They both looked to each other before her mother slowly nodded.
”With everything going on with the Alkidike right now, you didn’t exactly put yourself in a good spot.” Her father elaborated. It was her mother this time that threw out a question. ”And what happened Aminah, we thought you liked boys… couldn’t you have found someone around here?” Her mother asked softly, her eyes seeming sad.
Aminah couldn’t exactly believe it. ”I didn’t choose for this to happen with the Alkidike. I couldn’t have known that there would be fighting after my children were born. What was I supposed to do - predict the future?” Her brows furrowed together. This didn’t make sense. Why would they not understand that she didn’t plan on there being controversy right after her children were born? They could see with their own eyes that the babies were older than the fighting that was going on. She shook her head. ”I thought you would both be happy for me. For finding my family--” She would have said more but there was a knock on the door, cutting her short.
All three heads turned to face the door. She could see her father’s shoulders tense before he stood and closed the gap between him and whoever it was on the other side. A small mob seemed to have formed outside of the house. They were not happy to say the least. A lot of the faces were complete strangers to Aminah, others were those she had seen around town but she never knew personally.
Aminah couldn’t hear what they were saying at first, but she could see her father gesturing, and the one who had knocked gestured back, his face moving in emotion. Small snippets floated far enough that she was starting to piece some things together. ”Don’t want their kind here.” and ”Bringing them in on purpose” managed to reach her before she stood from where she was sitting and faced the mob head on.
”Could I help you?” She addressed the man at the door.
”Yeah. We don’t want you here. You’re bringing trouble with you and we don’t need those abominations in our village.” He spat out. It wasn’t anyone she had seen before.
A woman called out from behind him. ”Are you trying to get us attacked?
There was grumbling and agreement in the small crowd and some other choice phrases thrown her way. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Were they seriously accusing her of bringing the Extremists to the village? That somehow her newborn children would cause them harm? She was vibrating with anger. How could they be so stupid? Of all the things they could accuse babies of, bringing in the actions of the crazed Alkidike was among the least likely. She couldn't even understand what they could be using as logic for this.
Those around her though seemed to take her stunned silence and quiet anger as a confirmation. ”See?! She’s planning this. She wanted the Alkidike to come here.” The man called back to the others. ”You should take your bugs and leave.” He demanded.

Part 3: If That's What They Want
Aminah was dumbfounded. Were they really so rash and foolish? Was this what their lives had come down to? She shook her head in anger. ”How could you all say such things?” She demanded to know. ”I have always been there for the village. Haven’t I saved Yera before? When no one wanted to step up and take charge wasn’t I there when half of the village was on fire? Why would I do anything to hurt anyone here?” She proclaimed. It was unbelievable the level of betrayal she was feeling.
Those that had been in the village long enough began to shake their heads. They were starting to feel the shame of accusing Aminah. Though it didn’t seem to reach the ears of those who didn’t know and who didn’t believe. She pressed on. ”You all should be ashamed for turning your nose up on children - babies - who have nothing to do with the troubles around us. How could you be so hateful towards those that haven’t even been here long enough to cause malice or feel hate?” She could hear one of the babies crying from inside the house. ”They were made from love. To think that I would bring the extremists here, or that they would have anything to with people who hate hybrids so much is ridiculous and insulting.”
She could see some of the others in the crowd start to falter. Most seemed to look sheepish, abashed, or embarrassed at her accusations. Some of them weren’t so convinced. The man in the front called out again, this time adamant in his accusations. ”I don’t care who you were in the village, if you’re bringing trouble here - I want you gone.” He crossed his arms over his chest. ”You’re not the only one with family to think about.”
Aminah felt herself resign. ”Fine. If this is how it’s going to be - if this is how I’m welcomed back after so long - then so be it. I’ll take my children and leave. They’ll be better off without this hate surrounding them.” She turned her back on the crowd quickly, not wanting to say any more or give them any more of her time. Her parents looked sad, her mother still clutching Shima to herself. ”Are you sure Aminah?” Her mother softly asked. ”I’m leaving. It’s better for them.” She motioned to her babies. ”If you’d like to visit my door is always open, but I won’t be back to Yera.” Her father - though he was the first to introduce the idea of opposition - wrapped Aminah in a hug. ”We are happy for you Aminah, and we know this can’t be easy. But it’s for the best if you stay in your own home for a while. Until things calm down.” He let her go and Aminah restrapped her children, readying to leave. Her mother kissed each one on the forehead before giving them back to Aminah.
She wouldn’t come back, but she hoped her parents would visit. She felt the overwhelming sadness crush her as she headed back out the door and away from her childhood village and back toward home. She had no doubt in her mind that they would realize that they were being foolish.
