Considered the most prestigious military academy on the planet, the BMA was founded in 2400 CE, roughly a century before, but has been renovated over and over to keep up with the times. For those looking to be in established positions in the many branches, the absolute best place to start is the BMA.

It is a massive academy, capable of holding 75,000 students, the dormitories containing five students each. It has its own hangars and supply of weapons, all sponsored and paid for to ensure the finest education for future troops.

It was the day when the selected students would go to meet General Alexander “Lex” Prime, a notorious general in the GR Marine Corps, otherwise known as the Space Marines. They were ordered to line up in the gymnasium and wait, two lines of fifteen, one line on the left, the other on the right. Each of them had all signed up; they were there because they were approved into the program. There was no turning back now.

Alison stood with perfect posture befitting her position as the best of the best, approved to join General Prime's program. How proud her father had been when she told him she had been selected. Nothing could ruin this moment except...

“Hey, lighten up a little. Don't tell me you're going to stand like that until the General shows up.” Marcus said elbowing her in the ribs.

“General Prime.” She corrected. “And you would do well to do the same.” Honestly, how did her brother ever get accepted into this program? He barely made it into the academy in the first place. His grades were terrible in the theory portion of their classes. He never took anything seriously and was constantly joking around. And even Alison had to admit once he got out on the field Marcus was a force to be reckoned with.

“Common, you don't even know how long he will be.” Marcus returned rolling his eyes at his sister. She needed to loosen up a little. Well a lot. As with joining the academy, Marcus hadn't really been interested in entering the program, but his father had insisted and he had Alison to make sure he did it. Dragged by his sister he had signed up and to everyone's surprise he had been chosen. He was the best fighter, but he was constantly causing problems for their superiors.

“And that is exactly why you should be standing quietly at attention.” She hissed back.

As planned, the ship carrying the General arrived. After receiving a salute from the two officers awaiting his arrival, he was escorted to the gymnasium. His uniform consisted of a long coat, his attire entirely in black, without a single inch of skin showing. He was rumored to have possessed intensive scarring throughout his body, mementos of his service to his people. His helmet visor was tinted, only allowing him to see out, and he had a hidden breather underneath, which kept him alive. He was a gifted tactician, and made it clear that under no circumstances would he abandon his duty.

It wasn’t long before he entered the gymnasium, his hands clasped behind him in a reverse arm-fold, the cadets expected to be completely silent until spoken to. He walked forward, right between the two lines, not even turning his head once, likely glancing strictly with his eyes. He was 6’ 3”, and his presence was intimidating, particularly because of his lack of expression. It was difficult to tell what he thought of people, since there was no guarantee of mutual pleasantry. No one could tell if he was impressed or disappointed.

It was when he reached the end of the line that people were expecting him to speak, but he didn’t. He stood quietly with his back to them for about ten seconds, before finally sparing them words. His voice was low and grim. “75,000 students attend this academy, and you are but thirty of its finest. It is a program intended to take the best and make them even better, to take an iron will and turn into titanium.” His following words would be less pleasant. “For the duration of a single year, I will live to break each and every one of you. I suspect many of you will fail, but as the many fall, the few shall rise, and that few will be the first in the line of the greatest soldiers mankind has ever seen. As you are all aware, several races possess a physical prowess far superior to our own. For centuries, we’ve managed with technology alone, but there will come a time when it will be inadequate, when we may fall behind. You are all tasked with seeing to it that this does not occur, that the galaxy recognizes humanity as a force to be reckoned with, a force to be feared and respected, armed and unarmed.”

He turned around, and walked forward a few paces before pausing and turning his head, which caused some of the cadets to sweat from their brows. He walked forward to an appropriate distance from Alison. “Tell me, Cadet, what does it mean to be a soldier?” It was a question with many answers, and everyone in the room would hear.

The doors the gymnasium opened and everyone in the room quickly stood at attention, silence falling over the room. Alison watched her idol walk passed with awe. General Prime was everything she had imagined him to be. Of course she had studied all of his work in depth as anyone who hoped to be a tactician one day would. If she could only match a tenth of his brilliance she would be happy and here was her opportunity to learn from the man himself.

Alison positively beamed inside that General Prime would choose her to answer over everyone else in the room, though she did her best to keep her expression serious and neutral as General Prime would expect from a soldier. In her mind it meant that he could already see her potential. She had expected such a question from the legendary General Prime and thus had her answer prepared ahead of time. “Sir, a soldier is warrior and a member of a team. A soldier will always place the mission first, never accept defeat and never quit. A soldier is disciplined, physically and mentally tough, trained and proficient in warrior tasks and drills. A soldier always maintains their arms, their equipment and themselves. They are experts and professionals. A soldier stands ready to deploy, engage, and destroy the enemy. A soldier is a guardian of freedom and of humanity, Sir.”

Marcus could hardly keep himself from rolling his eyes as he watched his sister practically drool over the General while the man walked by. Alison had talked about little else for nearly a month and Marcus was sick of the man without ever meeting him. In his youthful arrogance he figured he would win in a one on one fight against the General. As he turned towards them though Marcus found himself holding a breath, only releasing it when it was clear the General was interested in his sister and not himself. Okay, maybe the man was a little intimidating.
