She was still getting acclimated to the island, to the voice in her head that only spoke in harsh, bitter bursts, to the outlandish isolation from everything. People had been nice on Twitter, but that was about her only interaction, other than Stormy waking her up.

So she explored in the time being, still not assigned any duties or tasks. She knew there was something about a lighthouse, and portals. That sounded like a nice place to sit for a while, to just go blank and let the sound of the sea take her to nothing.

Cassandra sat on the rocks by the lighthouse, breathing in the salty sea air.

A Hunter stood next to her. He had nondescript features, sort of handsome, sort of genial, sort of clean-shaven. He stared into the ocean as well. "A beautiful day, is it not?"

The accent was strange, and so was the speech pattern, but this was Deus, the home of the eccentric.

Her eyes were closed, so she naturally started when the man broke into her realm. Tenda hissed in the back of her mind, chastising her for beign so jumpy, like a scared little kitten.

"Ah, yes! It's very... nice, here." She smiled at the sort of handsome man, nodding with an innocent and naive smile. "Do you like it here?"

"Sadly," said the figure, "I do not belong here, I am just visiting. I feel a storm rising in the horizon, I have come here to find a suitable candidate for the inevitable surge." He turned to her. "If you would not mind, I would like to hear your story. May I ask you what transpired before you arrived as a Hunter?"

Just visiting? How odd. Perhaps he was permanently stationed at one of the smaller bases Oz had been prattling on about? Yes, that was probably it. After all, who knew with these odd people - she'd seen so many strange things at that meeting.

Says the girl who dresses up like other girls to feel like those other girls. Girls who do not exist. You, too, are odd and strange.

She'd spaced again, eyes vacant for probably a good minute. Snapping back to attention with an "-oh!", she blushed and twisted, adjusting herself to face the man.

"How much would you like to know? The gist of my story is that this seemed like a better living situation than I was in - shelter, security, a chance to protect the world. Better than living paycheck to paycheck on nanny gigs."

Liar.

"I see," the figure rubbed their chin, and for a brief moment did not seem to be a figure at all, simply light. They turned to look at her. "Are you truly happy here?"

She thinks for a moment, bizarrely unphased by the figure's sudden partial existence. She has always blocked people like that; she just considers it another space case.

"I don't know yet."

"When you know," he said, "call for my name. If you have a wish to protect, the feeling will linger, and you will find in yourself the ability to do so."

There was a loud ringing, sharper, brighter now. It almost hurt to look at directly, and then it felt as if Cass's ears were bleeding, her eyes about to burst.

When it disappeared, she would find herself alone again. Wrapped around one of her wrists was a chain with a lock, though nothing she did to remove it would work.

There was also, on the ground, a beautiful hilt made of what looked like blue crystal.

"But I don't know your na--"

She is cut off y her own screaming, the pain intolerable. Pressure in her eye sockets, her ears, head filled with hot, swelling air, rupture imminent.

Then nothing. She is alone, the man is gone, and there is dead weight on his left wrist. Teary eyes stare a long time at the lock, only realizing that is it actually there after a few moments, haggard breaths.

You panic too easily.

Cassie tries to slide it off, but it will not budge - the chains tighten when she touches it, threatening to cut off circulation. Eyes go buggy as she looks around, frantic. It needs to come off, off off off off.

She tries slamming it against jagged rocks, only sending stinging shock waves through her bones. She is hyperventilating. What is this thing? Who was that man? What in the Sam Hell had he done to her? Chocolate eyes are crying a steady stream of tears, searching for help from somewhere, anywhere --

Then she notices the hilt. A desperate body jerks forward, grabbing the crystaline object - maybe it can break the chains.

The hilt does not move, it is practically welded to the sand. Power flows from it, freely, but it simply will not budge.

A couple of Hunters on patrol seemed to have noticed Cassie, though from a distance, unsure of what exactly she was doing.

Cassie only stared at the hilt for a while longer, waves of power crashing over her, drawing her in, spitting her back out. A riptide of untapped potential, but it would not move.

Why couldn't it move?

"Hello!" She called out, the figures in the distance having finally entered her peripheral. Maybe they could help her get these chains off, even maybe move the hilt. "Could you help me, please! I'm in a bit of a -- I need some help, really badly!"

Both Hunters froze up, and then reluctantly looked around, realizing that Cassie was referring directly to them.

"Fine," said the Mist Hunter, moving forward first. She eyed the hilt. "Here's some help, maybe you shouldn't touch it." This was all said sarcastically.

Cassie was more than a little befuddled by their response, tears that had been welling up starting to trickle down soft, unmarred cheeks. Why wasn't this person being helpful? She had the same marks on her coat at Stormy - Mist division - and Stormy had said they were the helpers. So shouldn't they be helping?

"I-I didn't know..." Cassie mumbled, looking down between her knees at the sand. "I thought it could get this off of me." She held out her forearm, covered in chains and a lock, with a soft whimper.

She hadn't even been here a week, and so much was already plaguing her.

The Mist Hunter looked at Cassie, and then looked back to her other partner in crime. "Your arm," she said, sarcastically, "if you want us to remove your arm you might as well just trudge right into Caelius's office and tell him you instantly disagree with everything he says."

Unimpressed, she bent over instead, to examine the hilt, before beckoning the other Mist Hunter over. They murmured something to themselves, them murmured something to the SPECTRE watch device they owned and then simultaneously looked back at Cassie. "Who did you say gave that to you again?"

Her...arm? Cassie gave the Hunter towering over her a bewildered stare, brows furrowed. Couldn't she see the chains? They were all over her arm! And the lock, the weight of the steel dragging her arm back to rest. "What? No, the chains - I need my arm..." She mumbled, so very confused and suddenly paranoid.

Was this just a hallucination?

"Just...some Hunter? He sounded off, like a foreigner? I can't really remember what he looked like..." She bit her lip, trying to recall details. "He asked me if I like it here, and told me to call his name if I wanted to protect." She sighed, drawing a blank on the details of his appearance. "He never gave me his name, though."
