Emalthya sat with Pheonix by the side of the water stadium with her legs in the water. In the pool swam Saphire and the three of them were enjoying lunch together, a rarity in this part of Zatao, having few large bodies of water for Saphire to swim in, apart from the ocean. They had been allowed to stay in the water stadium until someone else needed it. They had not seen any other trainers that day and were enjoying the time alone.
Pheonix was beginning to doze, stirring himself only to crunch down a pokemon nugget or sushi roll or sandwich Emalthya had prepared. Her sushi rolls often fell apart, but they were still very tasty and she did try so hard.
Saphire swam about cheerfully, calling out to them and approaching when she wanted some food.
Emalthya kicked and splashed at the water and watched Saphire swim.
((I don't mean for it to be a water field, but that's just why she's there that day.))

Cael stepped up to the nexus, from which the paths to the various fields divided, entry papers stuffed in a pocket. Kite had danced ahead of him and Cloud the whole way, excited to try out its new moves. Cloudrunner had attempted to tutor the pair of youngsters in proper battle form, so far as she was concerned. If Cael was going to allow any but her to fight for him, they'd better not fail, or she/would revoke that privilige.
From a distance, he recgnized the large striped charizard, the trainer lady from the other day must be there! he waved and called out

Pheonix roused first to the call, having trained to catch odd sounds, specifically Saphire singing warnings to him. He sat up, stretching his long neck and roared a greeting.
Saphire dived up to the edge of the pool and sang out her own greeting and Emalthya hurriedly swallowed her mouthful.
"Hey! How are you?" She dried off her feet with her scarf and put her socks and boots back on.

((That is an amusnig roll! Energypuppy definitively get's initiative. XD))
Cael almost took a half step back. Pheonix, was big and scary, but he knew him, kinda, but the unknown water type was big, too, the both at once was a little intimidating! I couldn't help but be curious about new pokemon, though, and waved tentatively
"A little tired! Cloudrunner has been teaching us moves!" he chirped, not really sounding tired at all. "Kite wanted to test them out, and the Stadium seemed like a safe place to have a practice battle!"
<"Battle!!!"> Kite barked, and immediately bounded forward.
From Cael's side, Cloudrunner wuffed calmly, <"Power, first, puppy,">
Kite flicked an ear back and then struck a strong-looking pose as it skidded into place in front of Pheonix. The riolu glowed briefly, then the light faded and Kite went back to looking over-enthusiastic and silly. "

"That's true, but he might drown in this stadium!" replied Emalthya. "Let's go to the normal one so we don't mess anything up." She recalled Saphire to her pokeball, packed her lunch up into her bag and went across the hall to the normal field.
Pheonix took his place in the centre area after a quick face-nudge for luck.
"I'm not sure what he did," said Emalthya to herself. "He looks... different? Ah well." Louder, she called out, "Pheonix, use Dragon claw!"

Cael followed obediently to the correct stadium, embarrassed. Kite trotted along energetically.
"Kite," Cael cleared his throat once they were all at their places, ready to call out an attack, when Pheonix made his first move. Startled, he stuttered a squeaked, "Rock th - th- thing!"
Kite was pushed back on it's furry heels by the unexpected attack, but looked back at it's master, confused. That move hadn't been in training?
<"'Rock Slide',"> Cloudrunner corrected with mild sigh of, "'lu car io."
The riolu perked up in understanding and flung several sizable stones from the stadium floor with quite considerable force.

Pheonix was battered by the rocks.
"Pheonix, fly away and use solar beam!" Called Emalthya.
Pheonix leaped into the air, absorbing sunlight, then let loose a powerful blast of green-white light at Kite.

(( I think the damage should be 500, since its ( 100 [base damage] + 100 ([4x weakness bonus]) + 50 [stat boots]) x 2? ) )) Kite flinched and action rolled out of the light as the smell of itself changed from unwashed puppy, to sun heated fur, and began to cross into something less pleasant, even to a canine nose. Cael gasped. "That was amazing, Kite, keep going!!!" Kite shook it off (with a few specks of it's own singed fur) and threw another several paving stones into the air. It's tiny paws were both more dexterous and stronger than they first appeared. "Use dragon claw again!" called out Emalthya after Pheonix deftly avoided the rock attack.
Pheonix swooped down at Kite, claws extended. He no longer felt like a cheater to fly in a battle against an earth-bound pokemon; if they were going to use super effective attacks against him, he would not wring his claws over 'rights and wrongs.'

Kite tried to retreat away from the decendng claws, but the attack still caught the riolu on the rear flank and spun it around. "He's too fast, try to slow him down with a Force paaa- Eeep!" Cael ducked from the dive despite been well outside the flight path. Cloudrunner, still sitting calm and alert at his side like an arctic Anubis, rolled her golden eyes and finished for her human, <"Force Palm. Be precise."> she warned. Kite attempted to sidestep and strike the Flying pokemon with an open palm. ((*looks at dice* Nope! "What is with the status condition attacks," wondered Emalthya. "I think we've dodged all five that've been thrown at us..." More loudly, she said, "Pheonix, dragon claw again!"
Pheonix continued in his flying arc, turning it into a loop and when he came back around to Kite he lashed out with his claws again.

Cael looked dissapointed. Cloudrunner looked annoyed. Coud humphed. <"Stick to rocks">
Kite took the attack hard and tumbled. With a gap jawed canine grin, it used the momentum to toss another several stones at the flying foe.

Pheonix took the hits, trying to keep pace. He was getting used to taking hits these days. Battling was hard work.
"Pheonix, don't get too close, use heat wave!"
Pheonix curved in a graceful arc and then released a wide column of flame from his mouth at Kite.

((should be 250 for dmg I think, due to the bulk up boost?)) Cael and Kite panted as the temperature rose. Cloud, for her part, though she should have been worse off, stayed aloof. " Again." Cael called, but the pup had already started prying up part of the field to throw at the creator of the heat. The puppy had no finesse but by now it had figured out what worked.
