Heaving something of a sigh, Namaka stretched a little and, for a moment, felt quiet contentment with her lot in life. At least the nights were warm again! And things had been relatively quiet as well, which she more than appreciated.

With another stretch, she decided to take a wander deeper into the park. The last time she'd gone exploring, she'd found a sapling that interested her and she wanted to get a better look at it now that she had some time to spare. And after a few minutes of hiking, she found what she wanted. Smiling, she moved in close to the baby tree and carefully circled it, studying it to her heart's content. Weird, but not unpleasantly so, she decided. It wasn't any kind of tree species that she recognized though.

"I wonder where you sprung from, little one," she murmured as she crossed her legs under and sat on the grass.

"It was planted." The voice came from above, as though projected from one of the elder trees surrounding the sapling. It had been years since the events that had sparked enough interest for the tree to be planted and although the memories were still painful to reflect upon they were not raw as they had once been for the Senshi of Vengeance.

"It grew from tender care; a reminder of things that have passed, of those who have passed." There was a slight rustling sound from the leaves above, and although it was easy for her to blend in with the shadows if the other young woman looked closely enough in the right direction she might spot the rustling of pristine, white feathers.

Yelping in surprise, Namaka cursed herself for not noticing the powerful aura above her and forced herself to remain perfectly still. Granted, the owner of the voice hadn't done anything other than speak so far, but Namaka was very well aware that the folks who went with auras like that usually didn't like Dark Mirrors. Even relatively harmless ones like herself.

Hand fluttering in agitation over her heart, the senshi of sharks turned slightly to look up into the branches, to try and see who had answered her. Something about the words used had triggered the girl's love of stories and she was curious. She thought she saw a flash of bright white and decided to direct her own answer in that direction.

"It's a memorial? None of the history teachers at school ever mentioned it," she said with the tiniest hint of doubt coloring her voice. Had she missed that lesson? Granted, their books were at least ten years out of date, if not more, so it wasn't entirely inconceivable that this tree wouldn't have been written about at the time of publication. "What happened?"

"A memorial, yes, I suppose you could call it that. A plaque was never made, though, and most who knew of it before are long forgotten." She straightened herself out slowly as she rose from her perch, holding on to the branch above her for a moment before hopping down. She landed with a grace that had taken years to perfect, even with the special senshi agility, turning slowly to gaze at the young woman.

"There was a vicious battle and one side gave up everything to save another, losing everything in return."

Agitation momentarily forgotten in the face of the possibility of learning a new story, Namaka shifted a bit so that she could face this new woman, admiring the tumble of dark curls against the white of her fuku. Privately, Namaka envied the grace of the other's landing. Those kind of moves took a confidence she would probably never have.

"My school books sure don't mention anything like that," she muttered, then carefully considered where her information was coming from. As far as she'd been able to tell, the lovely folk of Destiny City did their damnedest to ignore the fact that they had magical people running amok.

"Umm... sorry. This battle," she said, brain spinning, "Is it safe to assume that the average city dweller has no ********' clue?"

She leaned forward just enough for a stray bit of moonlight to illuminate her face, eager for the full tale.

"No, the average city dweller most certainly 'has no ********' clue'." She laughed, the sound bitter and ugly coming from such a beautiful young woman. "It happened when things were both simpler and more complicated... Before you and your kind arrived on the scene." She made a vague gesture at the mirror scout and then paused, finally getting a look at the young woman's face.

Her lips curled into a snarl, hands curling tightly into fists. "... Who are you?" That flash of familiarity was all it took to bring back a sinking sickness to the pit of her stomach, stirring the rage of loss and the strong desire for Vengeance that she had pushed away. "State your name, soldier."

Okay, it was bad enough that the other girl's laugh reminded Namaka a little too much of how her mother had sounded some days. But given the context, Namaka could understand why it would sound that way. It had to be frustrating to know about a battle that no one else seemed to remember or care about.

But the sudden snarl and fist clenching was what made her go still and wide-eyed from absolute fright. She'd pissed off an adult. Adults couldn't be trusted, and she'd made one angry and now she was going to end up getting hurt, she knew it. Unbidden, tears starting to brim in her eyes as she curled in on herself, instinctively trying to form some kind of protection against whatever bad things were about to be inflicted on her.

She opened her mouth to answer and had to fight to get any sound past her choked throat.

"N-n-n-namaka," she stuttered, wondering why it mattered. Then, as if getting her name out had broken whatever damn was closing her throat, words began babbling out. The old apologies and promises to be good if only she wasn't hurt again came spilling out. "I-i'm sorry! I won't ask anymore, I'm sorry! Please don't hurt me, please? I'm sorry I asked about what happened. I won't do it anymore, I promise!"

There was a small part of her that felt guilty for startling the other young woman; for bringing tears to her face. Another part pushed further, the power of her sphere burbling within her, daring the other to strike out at her if only so she could react.

"Namaka? Did you choose this name to hide another or was it given to you? What is your sphere? I won't hurt you," can't, "but it is very important that you answer me, do you understand? From what do you draw your power?"

I won't hurt you. Namaka had heard that before and failed to be reassured. Still, that the other woman was remaining where she was helped.

A little. Not much. But a little.

Taking a deep breath and wrapping her arms tightly around herself, Namaka closed her eyes and spoke in a low, terrified voice, just wanting to provide whatever information it took to keep from ending up a stain on a tree.

"T-the cat Remarque found after I w-went through the mirror s-said my name was N-namaka. It t-told me that I was the s-senshi of s-sharks. And I don't understand w-what you mean about drawing p-power. Do you mean the B-black Mirror?"

She could hear the stammer fading the longer she talked and took it as a sort of good sign. At least she'd be intelligible. Though, for the life of her, she couldn't understand why this grim faced woman was asking if she'd picked Namaka as a name to hide a different one. She'd never heard of a senshi having more than one name before.

At that she stood down, shoulders falling as a feeling of despair crept in to claw at the space where anger and vengeance had been raging. She closed her eyes, letting the emotion swirl through her for a moment, drawing memories and faces to the forefront of her mind only to push them all away. Upon opening her eyes she looked to the other young woman again, taking a step back to put space between them again.

With her mind cleared and the distance separating them she could look at the young woman once more; actually look at her. She could see the differences now; the features that had been more prominent upon seeing Namaka's face for the first time fading into the rest of her, making up the frightened expression of a young Mirror Scout that she had never crossed paths with before.

"You bear strong resemblance to someone I know... Someone I knew." She murmured, voice soft and no longer carrying a cutting edge. "Someone I cared deeply for; the woman who planted that tree. I've heard that when scouts are corrupted they can sometimes change their name; not their real name, but what they go by. You cannot change what gives you power, though, and she was the Senshi of the Primordial. You are not her, no matter how similar you look."

She looked like someone else? Another senshi? Namaka narrowed her eyes slightly, taking this new information in and trying to figure out what to do with it. Turning slightly to look at the tree, she wondered what this other girl had been like.

"I'm sorry," she answered softly, though she wasn't entirely sure why she was apologizing. Maybe because the hurt was so evident in the other senshi's voice. "What was her name?"

She wasn't sure why it felt important to know, but maybe just talking about it would help the other woman.

"I know it's not my business, but my gramma always said it was important to remember the people who've already gone on and that the more people who remembered them, the less chance that they'd truly be gone."

"Saiph. Super Sailor Saiph, Senshi of the Primordial." The smile on her lips was fond, lacking the pain that had tinted her words. "She and her partner were dear friends of mine, both powered up and not. She was fierce and determined... Yet soft. Much like your grandmother, she agreed that it was important to remember and that's why the seedling was planted. We wanted to remember that a being that had come to this planet to steal our energy and support itself, and its children, gave its life to protect us from the powers of darkness."

Corvus shook her head slowly before tilting it skyward, looking to the stars she could make out above. "It isn't wise for anyone on either side of this war to spend so much time alone." She murmured, leaving it unclear for the moment as to whether or not she was talking to herself or sharing a bit of wisdom with the other scout.

Storing the name away in her brain for later, Namaka listened carefully. This was both story and history and to her way of thinking, far more important than the s**t her schoolbooks prattled about.

"She must've been something for you to remember her so clearly," she offered hesitantly, hoping she wouldn't say or do the wrong thing. She decided not to address the senshi's other words about being alone. Deep down, she had a feeling they weren't meant for her.

"I'll help you keep her memory from dying out," she offered spontaneously, not knowing why, but feeling it was important. "Then she'll be one of those ripples that Pratchett guy liked to talk about, yeah?"

She offered a slow, shy smile as she prayed the whole time that this wouldn't blow up in her face.

"She was." Those words made her smile seem more genuine, chasing some of the darkness away from the senshi's face. It was strange thinking on the events that had taken place five years ago while smiling, but she did for the moment as she turned away from the scout in order to approach the tree. Her fingers brushed along the trunk before reaching up to lightly caress one of the oddly shaped leaves.

"It was supposed to be a routine patrol. Five years ago most patrols were 'routine patrols', not task forces or rescue missions... Just keeping the city clean; Negas punched and youma dusted. We were kids." Her smile began to look a little more weathered as she spoke, gloved hand coming up to tuck a strand of hair away from her face.

"My partner stumbled across something in the park that night and by the time I arrived on the scene this giant tree had grabbed him and started draining his energy. It sounds... God, it sounds insane, doesn't it?" She laughed, glancing over her shoulder to the young woman again.

Namaka turned slightly so that she could keep the other woman in sight. Not that she expected her to attack. Well... okay, not really. But long habit and ingrained distrust demanded that she remain wary at all times. But in spite of that distrust, she was completely fascinated.

Eyes flickering from senshi to tree and back again, she felt like she should be protesting this. Trees coming to life was just too weird. But that impulse was quickly throttled down. After all they were two girl who turned into magical warriors when they said a bunch of fancy words. Energy draining trees were no odder than Mirrorspace or some of the horrors the Negaverse could let loose.

"Nah," she said with a hint of a smile. "Sounds about par for the course. I mean, I can walk through mirrors, so."

She shrugged with a tiny chuckle, hoping that her own words wouldn't end up distracting from the story.
