She meandered through the living room, rubbing a towel through her hair and exhaling loudly as she flopped onto a couch. This summer was rough. Really, all she wanted to do was curl up under a fan and nap, but she still had some work to do. She needed to pull the weeds from her garden and add more fertilizer, perhaps even plant her new mint.

Rolling the towel between her hooves, she removed it from her hair and headed to her bedroom, placing it in the laundry basket before exiting the house and plopping down beside her garden. Oh, the heat wasn't doing it wonders, was it? Some of them looked awfully sad, leaning to one side and edges crinkling. What was she supposed to do? No one in her family maintained a garden, or understood how to care for one. Lavender liked plants but didn't grow any... ugh.

Another hot day! But of course the green unicorn had expected as much, having moved most of his plants into his greenhouse a few weeks ago. It also unfortunately didn't halt the progress of time and Hydrangea was missing a few bits and pieces to finish the bird bath he had set out to build for Haven. So off to the shops he went, his eyes unable to resist stealing glimpses at other's yards or gardens.

Which led him to the fence of one unhappy looking little filly. She looked drained from the heat and he couldn't help but notice her flowers didn't look any better. Not all bad, but some looked as if they could use a good deep drink. And the filly.... maybe some helpful tips? He still had time before he needed to get to the shops and back and he couldn't stand to just leave her there with that frown.

"Heat getting you down?" he chuckled softly as he approached the fence, offering her a friendly smile.

Sugar jumped as she heard someone chuckle, head snapping back to spot a green male with a... a flower cutie-mark? Already her interest was peaked, scrambling to collect herself and sit up straight.

"Oh, um, a little." Her voice sounded vaguely distracted as her eyes watched his cutie-mark, suddenly breaking the usual silence the phony liked to stick to with an abrupt and unusual question.

"Do you garden?" Ah, there was her fathers bluntness. Her face stayed blank, however it was clear by how she perked up that she was interested in the answer. Maybe he could help her! It was if he was sent over here to answer her fretting.

His smile seemed to form wider over his muzzle, he could sense her interest just the way she seemed to perk up, though he guessed her lack of facial changes to being shy perhaps? At her question he could only chuckle more. "I do yes, its a big part of my landscaping work.... and a big passion of mine." he nodded softly, pointing his nose towards her flowers, beautiful even if having a hard time from all this heat. "I couldn't help but notice you seem to have your own little garden too?" he proposed his own question though he believed he already knew the answer.

Her eyes flicked to her garden as he nodded towards it, wearily sighing. Oh, it was hers all right, and she was slowly feeling more and more like a failure when she looked at it. She felt absolutely horrible that, despite her best efforts, her garden was suffering.

"Yes..." The word drew out, morphing into a soft sigh at the end. Delicately she reached forward to lift a drooping flower, ears flicking down when it simply fell back over after her hoof was removed.

"It probably won't be mine much longer if this keeps up."

Hyd frowned softly at how defeated the little filly looked. He could remember back when he was a babbin how many times he lost flowers, and not just from heat too, from all sorts of silly mistakes he did. Transplanting a flower when he should have left it alone. Thinking one's root ball was too tight and loosing it when he should have left it alone. Planting others too close together..... it was a learning process, sometimes still was. "Its tough sometimes, but don't give up." he nodded, a soft smile returning. "When its really really hot its good to keep the soil around them cool and watered. But some..." he paused a moment, eyeing her flowers to see what types she had. "...avoid the heat by dying. But they usually re bloom come spring time again."

She blinked back at him, glancing at her flowers and giving a skeptical eyebrow raise in return. Some died anyway? It was perfectly natural? But, why? There had to be something she could do, right?

"Will they always re-bloom?" She questioned softly, staring at her garden. Oh, she really didn't want to just let them die, it felt too cruel, even. But maybe he was right, and the best she could do was just take care of them until spring.
