Xenosa waited on the edges of Carrend, her eyes shifting between the people moving towards the tavern and the surrounding area. She was dressed in her usual colors of black with only her eyes visible and even then she’d used charcoal to color her skin tone a dark inky black. She didn’t want to be recognized and it usually helped. Hopefully though, Keke would be able to recognize her. She’d asked him to meet her at the edge of town so she could explain what was going on. The Orderite had decided that a partner would be better than none. Carrend was already dangerous enough alone add the type of information she was seeking out and it did not end well for most.

Kekeovonnai did not mind the dust of the town. His particular brand of Gaili magic operated on small things - not mountains and boulders, but dust and sand, and so he felt right at home in the dust-filtered sun. He didn’t mind, even, the smell of blood and aggression that marked this low-life town.

Carrend was lawless, a place for travelers to refresh their water and hurry away, not to stay for long, but for the Khehora - born in the lawless wilderness of the mountains anyway - it was simply a slightly more dangerous version of home. Magescians, after all, were less predictable than dragons. Keke, however, was enjoying his observations of the twolegs, even in their debased, hardened frontier forms.

When Xenosa had invited him to join her here, he had been more than excited. He’d been ecstatic. Finally, a chance to really study Magescians. Finally, a chance to obverse Xenosa in her natural habitat, as it were. He hoped he could provide some help to her as well… he’d like that.

He trotted through the nearly uninhabited backroads, already conspicuous as a Khehora. Soot and charcoal would not have helped him - he didn’t need to darken his already mostly black scales. A Magescian would give him a better disguise - as a bonded - but Keke wasn’t thinking in terms of disguise. He was thinking in terms of a grand and exciting outing. And, for that, he needed to find Xenosa.

He managed to catch her scent, mixed with soot and dirt and cloth and grease, and cheerily trotted towards it. It took him a few moments - more, even - to recognize the shadowy figure beneath the sheltering roofs that lined the street. He fell into step next to her, flashing her a bright white grin.

The Orderite turned to Keke, eyes smiling at him since he couldn’t see the bottom half of her face and he probably wouldn't until the end of things.

“Keke,” she said in a low voice. “Have you ever been or heard of Carrend?” Hopefully he had, knew of the dangers that lurked in the shadows of the town. “I’m going to need you to act as my Bonded, no talking.” Xenosa emphasised that point. “I’ll be talking, I need to get some information from someone within.” Here Xenosa struggled with spilling her secrets, surely he would want to know what it as they were doing exactly. Did she tell him? Did she trust him? These were big ifs, Xen had stopped trusting in others the moment Daenat had left her at Aevah’s doorstep.

Getting down a bit, Xenosa stared at Keke. “Listen, there are many things you do not know about me and perhaps will never know about me. Even explaining this whole situation would take a long time, but I want you to know we are going into a very dangerous place because I deal with dangerous people. You cannot tell anyone about this. Do you promise?”

“I’ve heard about it.” he murmured. Though, he had heard about it only enough to find his way here from the Expanse. Khehora clan lands didn’t have such unsavory characters. There were no assassinations, no outright ‘murders’, nothing like the way the town operated. Keke had only heard rumors of such things, and he had dismissed them. So, yes. He had heard of Carrend. But no - he did not fully understandI its dangers. And, even if he did, he probably would not be phased at all.

He nodded at her requests, perfectly willing to pretend to be a bonded, and stay out of the way. He was here to help, not hinder. He opened his mouth to ask a question, and then hesitated, closing it with a sheepish expression.

No talking. Right.

He clamped his mouth shut against his questions (he could bother her with them later, when he had even more). Instead, he nodded mutely. Of course he knew very little about her - he was hoping to learn more. And dangerous or not, he would. Besides, Magescians were dangerous in general, and Khehora were not fluffy kittens either. He was an able khehora, with an ally, surrounded by his own element. He was fine. He gave her an extra nod for good measure, and shifted himself around, arching his back and bowing his legs slightly to make himself look bigger and tougher, putting an expression on his face that he felt looked belligerent. If he finished it off by looking as brusque as his sister sometimes got, he thought he could appear just as dangerous as Xenosa did. He glanced up, almost playfully, seeking her approval with a wink of his emerald green eyes.

He could totally do this.

If Xenosa had been able to show him her smile and amusement she would have, so she opted for a wink and then hardened her face. It was all about a poker game here, people read people through their expressions. The less she showed, the better it would be for them. Motioning with her head for Keke to follow her, Xenosa entered into the main alley of the town. Most avoided her, they knew what she was from the looks of her and did not want to get in her way. Which was good for them considering she would have shouldered them aside.

Carrion was the town's only tavern, it was an extremely large inn to be able to fit all the travellers that came though. Yet the building still looked like it might fall apart any day, the owners pocketed their money and didn’t bother with repairs knowing the kind of people that frequented the place. As such, when one entered Carrion they would come to the surprise that the tavern was large, taking up the whole bottom level of the building itself with the two above ones having rooms. One could easily hide in the corners of the tavern and never be seen.

This was why the Orderite enjoyed this place so much, you could do business and never be bothered by anyone. Thoguh she was a repeat customer here and knew her way around the place quite well. The bartender looked up and motioned her over to the bar, Xenosa glanced down at Keke and made her way towards the bar.

“So nice to see you X. Haven’t seen you in a while,” he cast a look at Keke. “Didn’t know you had a Bonded.”

“Well, I’m full of surprises,” came her low voiced reply. “Is my informant here yet?”

“Not yet, should be anytime now, you can go and take a seat if you want.”

“Anyone I should be worried about.”

“Always.”

Xenosa internally rolled her eyes and tapped the bar once before pushing off and moving between tables to go take a seat at one of the empty tables. There was a few groups but the only ones that she was really worried about were the Oblivionites.

“Keke,” she didn’t glance at him but kept looking over one of her daggers. “Anything you can tell me about that group of Oblivs?”

The place stank of rancid liquid, but it was more the isolation from the sand and silt of his element that bothered Keke, just a little. Not that it was clean inside, but it was still a floor, a separation between him and the solid - or mostly solid - Earth. Not the most comfortable place for him. Still, his excitement was unabated. Clearly Xenosa was here to meet someone, and he couldn’t wait to meet them too. He sniffed at the aromatic floorboards, keeping his mouth shut as he had promised, before following Xenosa to the table. Since they seemed to be waiting, he settled in to make himself comfortable. He had just begun to set himself down in a relaxed sphinx pose when Xenosa asked her question. He looked over at the Oblivionites, and decided that they looked like Oblivionites. They smelled like Oblivionites, too. And leather. And guns.

Guns?! Oooo. Keke had only heard tell of the strange spring and sulfrous powder contraptions that could propel metal balls with deadly force. He had never actually seen them before. How very interesting. Apparently, Xenosa wanted an answer, which meant she wanted him to talk now. So, he spoke quietly.

“They smell nervous.” It was a strong smell in the air, and he was sure it was coming from them. They didn’t look nervous, but they were looking in their direction, or at the bar, or at the entrance. “I think they’re waiting for something.” It reminded him a little of how his sister got when she was hunting. Or, how he got when he was stalking something. “Or hunting.” But what could they be hunting in this stinky place? Other twolegs? It was puzzling.

Nervous was never a good sign, it made people do stupid, ridiculous things when they were weighted down by stress. She counted five with perhaps another hidden somewhere else within the tavern. That was six nervous men that could all spew all hell into the tavern if things went wrong. Xenosa spotted the bartender glancing at her once and then slowly slide his gaze to them, yeah yeah. She’d already spotted them herself, she wasn’t new at this game and didn’t need him giving her away. It had been obvious from the moment she’d stepped through that they were waiting for her and her informant. Xenosa figured they were now debating whether or not she was Dovaa or Orderite.

Why did they always give the idiots the guns? Xen only had two arms which meant she could possibly kill two before they got their guns out and bullets started flying. Maybe even a third if she was fast enough, but she didn’t know how possible that was considering there were five of them at the table. It was best to stay calm for now, she was just meeting a friend in a tavern on her travels, no one needed to get all up in arms about it. She’d keep an eye on them though, just in case she needed to start flipping tables to avoid getting bite by bullets.

It wasn’t long before a cloaked figure came in, a small figure that anyone would recognize as female. Xenosa wanted to smack the girl. There were silver strands of hair that were visible even under the hood she was wearing. The girl stepped a little further into the tavern, searching for her probably but unable to find her.

“Keke, can you go escort her here? Tell her you’re X’s Bonded.” Good thing she hadn’t taken a room upstairs, she would never have been able to grab the girl before the Oblivionites did. By sending Keke she was dividing their attention, it would be much easier to strike more of them if they weren’t all watching her at once.

Keke noticed when the Oblivionites’ attention was suddenly more focused, and he looked towards where they were looking. Oh! A female! Was this who Xenosa’s ‘contact’ was? The person she was supposed to meet? He looked up at her questioningly, but he got his answer before the question was even asked.

“Sure.” he said, stretching once before striding forth. He could almost feel the eyes of the Oblivionite group on him, but he didn’t look. He just behaved as ‘Zarri would and struck a proud posture. Let them stare he thought. It wasn’t as though he wasn’t an obvious adult khehora anyway.

He trotted up to the girl. “Hello.” he said quietly, “I’m X’s bonded. You can call me K if you want…” He chuckled to himself. Heh. He was so clever. “I can take you to her.”

The girl looked uncertainly at the Khehora before her, she’d been instructed to speak with the bartender after all. Though the contact name was correct, perhaps this was who she was supposed to be meeting after all? “Okay.” The girl finally acknowledged before following him back to the table where a figure in black was sitting. For a second she froze, thinking that perhaps she had been caught. Though when the plum eyes met her own golden ones she relaxed just a little and finally slipped into a seat across from the other woman. An Orderite knew and Orderite when it saw one.

“Are you the correspondent?” She asked.

“That I am.”

“Password?” The girl was relaxing a bit more now.

“Gaili.”

“It’s good to finally meet you. I was afraid...”

“That it would be a trap?” Xenosa finished for her. “Not at all. Do you have the papers I requested?” The girl nodded. “Good and you hid them somewhere right?” Another nod. “Good, now tell me what I need to know.”

Two more Oblivionites entered the tavern, glancing around but finally seating themselves at the bar. Xenosa glanced at them and then at the group. If more kept coming in they would be in trouble. They were tightening up the escape routes and controlling the access points. They couldn’t stay here, as soon as the girl gave her what she wanted she would be killed or worst, tortured.

“Keke,” Xenosa said slowly still eyeing both groups. “I’m going to need you to escort the lady upstairs, find an empty room and get in and then help her out of the building. We’re going to meet up where we began.” Things were about to get ugly and she needed this girl alive. “I need you to do that now.” Whoever the others were they would reveal themselves by looking at Keke and the girl going upstairs. Then she could strike.
PostPosted: Tue Jun 02, 2015 2:55 pm

Keke moved so that he was between the girl and the Oblivionites, mentally thumbing his nose at them as he blocked their line of sight. “Please keep to this side of me.” he said, pretending that the group was of no real interest to him. He could see them, though, out of the corner of his eye, watching him. Again, let them watch. He had a nice hide for them to admire, blotched as it was with bright regions of green. He walked with her up the stairs.

Was this an inn? Where Magescians stayed when they weren’t in the wilds or on the road? What a wonderful concept, a place just for travellers. Except, from the smell of things, it wasn’t a very well-kept inn. But, well, having a roof was absolutely spectacular for someone used to either caves or sky, so Keke wouldn’t complain. But he also wasn’t staying here.

He entered a room, looking behind him for pursuit. He could not see them, but he could feel them, their feet making the floor shake in a way he was easily able to discern. “Oop!” he said, hustling her into a room. It was a basic affair, a grimy bed, grimy floors, grimy clay pitchers and… a grimy window.

Keke immediately broke the window, the shards arranging themselves around his claw, the shatter muffled by their suspension. Glass, after all, was just condensed sand, his element. “Could you look out the window a moment and check for me?” check for what, he didn’t know, but he figured she did. The footsteps drew closer and, the moment that the dark skinned and hollow eyed Oblivionites burst through the door, Keke burst forth with a surprise of his own. Sharp shards of glass swarmed the Oblivionites like bees, stinging and rattling and slicing. Kekeovonnai felt a little bad for them as they screamed, but they weren’t his priority right now.

After all, he was being helpful!

So, while they were thus occupied, he nudged the girl onto his back. Checked or unchecked, it was time to go. “Hang on!” he said, shoving his way out of the open window. Thankfully , he was lean and flexible enough to make it. He extended his wings to break his fall, not bothering to flap too hard as he landed gracefully on the ground.

Yes. The ground. His home. His element. “Yes. Hang on, very tight, just around my neck. Trust me, you’ll want to.” He hesitated, just a moment, to let her get a grip. “Ready?” he asked. And, without waiting for an answer, he charged ahead. On the ground, his magic kept his feet sure and helped him turn quickly among the dark, narrow corridors between buildings. He was fast and agile on the ground, running as fast as any well-bred hastar, faster certainly than any twoleg.

Keke kept to the shadows, darting in and out of trails, doubling back and winding around, just to give any pursuers a hard time. Finally, on the edge of town, he scurried under a shelter, free from airborne eyes and flopped hard onto his stomach. “There, that should do it!” he said, exhausted but exhilarated. This was all so fun! He couldn’t believe it! Panting, he looked up at the girl, twisting his neck to look at his back. “Are you all right?”

When Keke got moving, Xenosa was watchful of the eyes that trailed behind them and the three Oblivionites that followed them upstairs. That left her with much better odds than before which meant it was time to strike back at the enemy. Xen stood up and walked over to the bar leaning on it right next to the two Oblivionites that had entered the inn not long ago and the ones whose eyes had also followed keke and his ward. They didn’t notice her until they turned to see her table was now empty and she was right there next to them. Fools, Xen thought.

“How’s it going boys?” And before they could reply she had a knife to throat of the closest Oblivionte. Those that were left behind all stood up as one. “I wouldn’t reach for those pretty guns of yours.” She called to them. “I think we should just take it all easy.” Grabbing onto his shoulder, Xenosa turned the Oblivionite and pressed herself against his back as she dug the blade to his throat a little closer. “I don't want any trouble, you hear?” Slowly the Orderite dragged the Oblivionite with her as the others in the group moved just as slowly towards her. There would be no pity here once she was out of their line of sight,

With her back to the door, Xenosa kicked the tavern door open and moved outside. A few passers gasp and ran the other way, people were avoiding them. Xen sliced the Oblivionites throat and let his dead body fall onto the door of the tavern, this would hold them back for a little bit. Her wings spread and she took off just as they’d begun to bang on the door. Xenosa flew up and over the tavern then flew down and into the street over before turning a corner and then hiding her wings. Quickly, she threw the cape off of herself and removed her head covering and began to remove the dark clothing that constricted her.

Under the clothing she had light skin tight clothing that clung to her as she began to run away. The Oblivionites would find her clothing and she needed to rinse off her face. Moving as fast as she could, Xen went and snagged some water from a near by well and washed her face before heading back to where she’d met Keke. People were panicked and alarmed at the brutal death out in the open. That would teach them a good lesson. Xenosa made it back to their spot quietly and made sure she hadn’t been followed before calling out.

“Keke?” The girl was okay and she had thanked the Khehora but when she spotted Xenosa she ran from their hiding place towards her. “Where’s Keke?” Xen said quickly, eyes searching for the Khehora.
PostPosted: Tue Jun 02, 2015 3:02 pm

Keke stretched, flapping a wing. “Over here!” he said, still out of breath from his run. He struggled to his feet - which now were starting to ache slightly from the pounding they had taken - and moved, slowly, over. He sniffed the air around her. “Is that water?” he asked hopefully, peering around her briefly, “Goodness, I could use some right now…” His throat - his entire body really - was parched from the run and from the oppressive heat. Being black of hide was not the best color to be in the desert, he was rapidly re-learning. He sniffed again, noticing that Xenosa smelled strongly of blood, but that wasn’t surprising. Blood was almost a part of her scent, ever since he had known her - even in the hazy memories of his youth - it had clung to her. “What happened?” he glanced around and behind her, just to check. “Were you followed?”

“Made sure they didn’t mess around in my operation.” Xenosa said grimly. She did hand him the water though, he seemed quite parched by it. Maybe he wasn’t used to this kind of adventuring, but if he wanted to stick with her she was going to have to shape him up! With Keke well and good, Xen turned her attention to the other Orderite. She didn’t have any injuries on her good, she needed her alive and well. “Where did you hide the information?” The girl handed her a folded piece of parchment.

“Those are the instructions to find it. Just like you said to do.” Xenosa nodded taking the piece and hiding it within the layers of clothing on her body. Though she did produce another piece of paper for the girl and handed it to her. “This is your payment as promised. Stay out of the capitol and you should be fine. This paper will buy you passage for where you need to go.” The girl nodded and covered her hair again, she was just about to leave when she turned and stared at Xenosa.

“He knows.” Something gripped Xenosa from within, even as the girl disappeared behind the treeline in the road she continued to stare at the empty space.

He knew. This was bad.
