He smiles at the female knight standing in front of her. Her eyes sparkle and she looks down with flushed cheeks, her slender fingers tucking a loose strand of brunette hair behind her ear. Her lips move to say something, but a dark, blurred figure passes behind her. Wilson’s attention strays temporarily, and when he watches the knight walk down the hallway, Wilson realizes it is Mordred.

The Great Knight of the Serpent. His gaze lingers as he thinks about the meaning of that. He shifts his eyes back to the knight in front of him, but sometimes he cannot help but flicker back toward where Mordred had once been, but he had already disappeared into the next room over.

The room is pitch black, but they can see the room’s contents with hateful clarity. It is a shabby room, if one could call it a room at all. They only needed to replace the wooden door with iron bars, and it would resemble a prison cell with unsettling similarity. Golden eyes stare ruefully at the door in front of them while they remain seated on the cardboard bed. Hangs hang low, and the slightest shift in movement causes the chain to rattle, a reminder that they are not free, they are only a prisoner to this terrible game of war.

Laughter—not their own—as the door creaks open and hands reach out toward them. He reaches up to wrap their clawed, scaly hands around the stranger’s neck, but they only chuckle. “How silly.” The stranger’s eyes glow a matching gold before pushing them onto the bed. “Hope you had your beauty rest, because you won’t be getting it ever again.”

A hiss. They feel nails dig into human skin, but the sensation is lost to the pain and panic at the all-too-familiar. No, no—

“Sir?” The lord of the castle appears to have vacated the room, and Wilson wonders where the lord’s son—his longtime friend—has disappeared to.

He opens the door to what appears to be a study, and he can only hope that he has not stumbled upon the lord’s personal study, but a generic study. The boy mentally berates himself, what kind of man holds multiple studies scattered throughout the castle? Well…

Wilson decided to not answer that, instead slipping further into the room with curious eyes. He runs his hands over the books’ spines, but the bookcase runs higher than his young self. He curses himself for not growing any taller, and can only hope that he will mature into a tall man that can reach even the highest shelves of this study. The lord carries a multitude of books that span a plethora of subjects, and it piques Wilson’s interest.

One book in particular happens to slide out on its own, so he turns around to pick it up. He picks it up carefully, and his gaze flickers to the text across the pages.

And so the knight of the stallion draws his arrow

A swirling darkness. Cold water. Giggling as webbed pull him deeper into the lake.

He snaps the book shut and hastily puts it back in place.

Its eyes peak out from the waters and follows the fireflies dancing above the lake’s surface before settling on Wilson. He stumbles back, startled. His butt falls flat in the wet sand and he scrambles backwards, but the girl does not move from her spot in the water. She does nothing, merely directs her gaze sideways, sighs turning into bubbles before dipping into the darkness again.

She reappears closer to the lake’s edge and her face rises above the water to reveal a pale, smooth face and black hair clinging to her face. She smiles to reveal razor sharp teeth, but Wilson imagines it to be a friendly gesture over anything else. “Are you lost?” Her words bubble into the air, disappearing quickly and in a muffled voice, as if she was still underwater.

Fire. Screaming.

The Rider looks down at him with gleaming white teeth.

He squeezes his eyes shut because some things are best left forgotten.

Wilson pulls the string of his bow and aims the arrow’s tip carefully at the target. He keeps both eyes open as he calibrates with care, but a sudden voice from behind causes him to jump and the arrow sails above the straw target. The boy tries to mask his disappointment as he turns around to see his close friend.

Eyes widen; he steps back. “Oh, Elli—“

“Doing some handy work with that bow, I see.” Lips twist into a grin as he eyes the fallen arrow.

Wilson flushes red. “Well, you see—“

“Don’t worry. You’ll make a fine knight.” The older boy snickers, claps his back with a confident thud.

Wilson flushes harder. “No, no, it wasn’t like—“

More laughter.
