She felt numb, her mind a blur with the whirlwind of memory of what had occurred. Her heart was heavy and felt in turmoil. Perhaps she'd developed some feelings for Sin after all. Perhaps that was why she had given him his wish to wed another. The implication of that was more than she cared to think about just now. Whatever affection she might have felt for Sin, it surely wasn't love.
She put the idea out of her head for the moment. She walked in silence, the moon bright above her. She glanced up at it irritably, then deepened the shadows around her, creating a bit of cover for her in the gloom. She could fly, of course, but what would be the point in hastening what was to come? She had broken her vow. BOTH vows, come to think of it. She hadn't married Sin, and she hadn't brought him home. The thought of failing in her duty made her heart even heavier.
So she trudged on in the general direction of her herd, or what she hoped was the right direction. After racing off through this strange land of kawani she might have lost the way back. She almost felt it didn't matter. It should be raining she though absurdly. It certainly would suit her mood.
Before long she began to thirst, her throat tight and dry. It added to her general sense of discomfort and for a while she kept along, ignoring it. Better sense finally won out and she veered in her course in search of water. She found it easily enough, her keen senses leading her there with little thought involved. It was a small stream, but was clear and cool. She stepped in and splashed herself, washing away some of the dirt she'd accumulated on her travels. She lingered there, heedless of anything around her. She drank deep and then waded further in, splashing water up her legs and tail. Her long hair trailed in the water and she whipped it around herself, sending the cool water cascading down her back.
It was almost soothing to her, his break with reality. She lost herself to the sensation and stood heedless of anything around her, head pointed at the sky. It was such a clear night, the moon was full and there were so many stars she couldn't fathom being able to count them all.
She let herself close her eyes and get lost to herself for a moment, letting the memories wash over her like the water had. She didn't know what to tell her herd leaders. She wasn't sure she cared what they thought anymore. Sin had sparked something in her - an idea. Something she would never have dared before. Love was a word rarely used among the ruling families. No one paired up for love. At least not officially. Unions were for duty, for offspring, for the strength of the herd. It was never for love. Well, almost never. Perhaps it was time for change.

Zanzibar walked the forest he called home. It had been a while since he had seen someone besides his friend Cassi. He liked it when she visited and had grown close to the mare. She was probably his only friend at the moment. After all he was the monster of the night. He grunted to himself as he walked. His wings were neatly folded at his sides. He was in search of his prey for the evening. He would never actually hurt another soquilli, for it was against his strict moral code to do so. He loved the forest, and he had grown comfortable in it. He knew the ins and outs of the trees where everything came together, even where there was a lack of different things. His clearing was by far his most prized section of the forest. It was his home, his solitude, and his prison all in one quaint little place.
He found a small mammal running between the trees and took that as his prey for the evening. Once his Kalona thirst had been fed he was good. He glanced up at the sky, taking in for a moment the full moon that shone bright above the tree tops. The gentle wind pulled at his mane and tail. He smiled at the gentleness of it. He had always been the fighter, and he would always be the fighter but it didn't mean that he couldn't enjoy the gentle things around him. He walked through the forest, between the trees and around the small river that ran through it. He listened to the sounds of the water, it was oddly calming this evening. This was when his senses pricked to attention. There was another there. His posture went stiff and he slowly and deliberately slid back into the cover of the forest. He was quiet for his bulk, and for the armor he wore. He was always cautious of when the bones would clink together, he would not do anything to jeopardize his location. Being silent was his biggest task and he had gotten fairly good at it over the years. He slid into the shadows of the tree tops. He would watch this newcomer for a while, but first he needed to get close enough that he could see who or what had entered his forest.
Slowly from tree top to tree top he made his way down the river. He never made a sound and made sure to keep focus on everything around him. His senses were alert to all of the sound of the night. This was his territory and he would protect it. 'I will protect everyone else from my curse... I haven't accepted this solitude for nothing!' he thought to himself. Finally the newcomer had just come into view. He stayed there a good distance off, and watched. 'It's a mare...' He thought once more. He was intrigued by her. He could tell by her appearance that she was different then most of the others he knew. His gaze narrowed and he drew himself up. He would play the game with this one as well. He needed to drive her out and away from his forest before she got herself hurt.
"I see you have entered the forest... Do you have no care for your life?" He laughed slightly at this. "Are you ready to become the meal... You have entered the forest of the Monster of the Night..." This was his game, this was what he would play in order to get her to leave. Though there were always a couple that wouldn't respond to the fear that he tried to instill upon them, but he wouldn't think of that now. This new Mare had no idea the curse that was his to bare. He wouldn't let another get hurt because of himself. He watched her waiting for her reactions. He was ready to continue his circle around her, but for now he remained where he was in the Shadows of the tree tops. He had gotten used to using the shadows to his advantage. He smirked at the thought that she would never know where he was, or where the voice was coming from. He would never make the mistake of staying in the same place twice.

sesshiyasha by the end of this post I almost started quoting Bane's speech from Batman >_> Oh, you think darkness is your ally. But you merely adopted the dark; I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING! The shadows betray you, because they belong to me! She had almost found true inner peace, or at least a fraction of it, when a distinctly male voice boomed all around her. She snapped her eyes open and was at once on guard, scanning the immediate area. All was clear, but she now felt the eyes upon her. There was a presence, somewhere hidden. Well, two can play at that game. It was dark already, which was helpful. She slowly made her way out of the water, so the ripples would no longer play a role in announcing her location. Her movements were slow, deliberate, soundless but the gentle lapping of the water against she shore and the drops as they ran off of her on her way out of the still pool. Her eyes were ever in motion, trying to find where her adversary rested. She didn't feel particularly threatened. She'd dealt with carnivores before, and not a single one of them announced their presence before attacking. This was something completely different, some game she did not quite understand. What he so sadistic as to wish to play with her first? Did he want her afraid? Well that will be disappointing to him, she thought. She was not afraid.
"You call yourself the Monster of the Night, yet I see no monster," she called out loudly. "If I am to become a meal, my Monster will have to find me first!" She backed into the shade of the trees and then employed her ulun'suti power over shadow. The darkness deepened around her and what was once almost black became pitch. She was completely covered, and was confident in that fact. The affected area was about three times her length in diameter, but with the deeper shadows of he forest it blended in and even as she made her silent way out of the stationary circle of magical darkness she was still concealed in shadow. She grinned to herself, pleased. Whatever game this soquili was playing at, she was clearly the better. She would be no one's meal this night. Still, she was intensely curious to see what exactly this soquili was so she settled into a deep hallow in a massive tree and trained her eyes on her distinct spot of magical darkness, waiting for the "monster" to investigate it. She was curious what sort of fiend this was threatening her.
She almost chuckled to herself at how foolish this stallion was to think that she of all soquili could succumb to something in the night. She was born and raised in darkness, who was he to challenge her? Whatever madness caused this male to think he was somehow the master of the night would certainly prove his downfall one day, she was sure.

He looked to where the female was, moving gracefully and studying her as she moved and talked. He watched as she disappeared into the trees. He watched as the section where she had disappeared into had grown darker. 'Exactly how stupid do you think I am...' he thought to himself as he moved in a circle around the darkened spot. He stayed in the shadows for that was where he was comfortable. It was his territory. This forest was his and he had defended it countless times.
He let his senses take over, listening watching, and waiting for the wind to carry her scent to him. He didn't sense her anywhere. This confused him a bit, but he would never step out into the moonlight until he knew the intentions of the other, and if his curse would allow him to be in their presence without harm befalling them.
"Finding you will be a treat it seems..." He spoke calmly and slowly. He would not fall for her plans to trick him into investigating the darkened area of darkness. Though he did wonder how she made the shadows do what she wanted. He didn't posses that ability, he could hide in them and use them to his advantage, but he could never bent them to his will or advantage. His hooves were planted on a thick branch of an old tree. Speaking clearly he used the trees to make his voice seem to come from everywhere. "Just because you do not see a monster, does not mean he is not lurking in the darkness waiting to strike dear lady." He watched and waited for some sort of response or movement. Even something as simple as a sound. His ears moved as they searched for the slightest sound that would give away her position. This was a game and he would win. "What brings you to My forest? What reason do you have for coming here of all places?" He was always curious as to why others came into the forest. For one he knew she came because she was on a journey and she was constantly moving. She was probably his only friend outside of the forest.
It did him no good to think of trivial things at the moment. He needed to focus on the task at hand, and not let this shadow bender get the better of him. He would stay in the treetops for now. She had wings, he would see if she could use them in order to find him. Her glowing eyes had caught in his mind, there was something about them that seemed familiar. He couldn't quite figure out what it was in her eyes that called to him, but he shook his head, this wasn't the time for that. He needed to be sure of her intentions and reasons for being there, was she there to hunt him? had they sent her to finally slay the monster of the night? He would be the one to find out.
