"This is nuts," Katie Catigern murmured to herself as she hefted one leg over the brick divider, wedging herself in between the park wall and a nearby tree.
"This is totally nuts," she continued, hands fumbling with her back pocket in search of her phone.
"This is crazy nucking futs," she added, her voice above a whisper as she pressed the red record button. Across the street, some vague scaly...thing was tearing into a couple of garbage cans, and it certainly looked bigger than some sewer alligator. This was some next level reporting, this was the kind of stuff that could net Katie a job overnight.
She watched through her screen as the strange creature tore open a bag with its jagged...beak?...and commenced with burying its face in its hard won prize, making mollified chirps as it binged. Katie's grin couldn't be wider, watching the footage collect. "This is like Nat Geo for weird s**t, I'm gonna be famous."

Carson was on his way home when he noticed a girl climbing a tree. That, in itself, was only a little weird. She looked like she was maybe a little bit too old to be climbing trees, but hey, you do you was a thing. But then he looked across the street and realized that there was one of those things there. A youma, Elke had called them, though Carson was trying to forget that he knew anything about that world. His months with Elke had been short and sweet - and they seemed increasingly like they were over permanently. (She'd made no effort to contact him now that the semester was over.) (He was a little - okay, a lot - sad.) But okay. So. Giant alligator thing across the street. Girl in a tree, rapidly encroaching on the alligator thing's personal space. Carson didn't see this ending well in any possible timeline. "Hey," he said, jogging over to the base of the tree. "Hey, what the hell are you doing? We need to get out of here."

"Okay, cool, just a sec," Katie responded absent-mindedly, her eyes never leaving the screen as she leaned even further over the wall, trying to get a closer shot. Biting her tongue as she concentrated, she reached her phone-wielding arm as close to the thing as she could reach without losing her balance--
Which was precisely when the beast struck, snapping up with hissing beak-like jaws. Katie screamed and she tumbled backwards, somehow managing to stumble head over heels to get behind Carson, her hair mussed and eyes manic.
"I think it heard you," Katie blurted, before glancing down at some of the upwelling scrapes on her arm where she'd hit brick on the way down. "Aww, crap, this is gonna scab--WAIT." The redhead flailed for her back pocket, and then looked down at her empty hands, her mouth agape.
"My phone!" And then, she broke for the wall again, scrambling to catch footing on the rough bricks. She made it about halfway before she was met with the face of a hissing brick, staring wide-eyed at the snapping maw as the creature struggled over the divide, straight for the two of them.
"Yep, it definitely heard you," she murmured, and then she was stumbling backwards, off the wall and towards the ground. "RunrunrunrunRUN!"

"No," said Carson, reaching for the girl - maybe, maybe he should climb the tree after her? "Not cool--" And then she screamed, and his stomach lurched as, for an awful moment. Carson thought the beast had struck. Then he snapped back into the situation. "Leave it," Carson barked, following her back to the wall. "This is a warzone--" Oh. Good. So she'd gotten the message after all - and brought the damn thing over the wall. "More like it heard you!" Carson called, chasing after her. They needed to get out of here and they needed to go fast and, in an ideal world, they needed a convenient intervention from someone more professional than either of them. The creature was gaining on them. "Do you have a ******** death wish?!" Carson asked, catching up to the girl. "Doing it for the Vine is not worth your life!"

"It was fine until you started freaking out!" Katie called back, eyes widening as she caught sight of the encroaching creature. It's snapping jaws were enough to put a little extra life in her legs, which were otherwise already burning in duress, pushing her into a full sprint while the gears in her head turned. They were on open ground and losing pace with the thing, but maybe it had s**t for a turn radius. If she could just find an easy place to pivot...
Her eyes locked on the open park gate, and her plan snapped into place.
"It wasn't for the Vine, I'm a journalist!" she nevertheless protested back, her heart sounding to the beat of the monster's heavy footfalls. "We gotta turn at this gate, okay? One, two--" Katie had misjudged her counting by a second, but when the moment came she whipped out her arm and caught hold of the gate, whipping herself around to the sidewalk border of the park using her built up momentum. If this party pooper was smart, he would follow suit."

His fault? Carson swore under his breath - there was no way that this was his fault! They wouldn't even be in this situation if she hadn't been waving her camera at a dangerous monster! But, he recognized, now was hardly the time for arguing. "Okay, journalist, whatever," he barked, following her around the gate. She looked young to be a journalist - maybe it was for a school paper. Or the Vine, and she was just being defensive. Whatever. Now was certainly not the right time to be arguing semantics. Carson turned and pushed against the gate, trying to close ********!" he exclaimed. "It's decorative." ******** ******** - who even did that? "Come on. Run!" If she was smart, she'd already be way ahead of him. Carson took off again, doing his best to ignore the growing pain in his knee. This was a bit too much excitement for his still-recovering leg.
