Did You Hear?
Prompt 1

Solo or RP Format
Can be used toward Solo or RP req

Word spread fast in a place like Tendaji. Surprising when the people were so spread out, but now that there was more traveling it was a growing rumor mill spreading word as fast as earthlings could move. It was little secret that a group of Alkidike were starting to cause problems in Tendaji. The extremist Alkidike felt that it was high time that Jauhar was taken back from the shifters and the alarming growth of others that were settling into their land.

There were growing accounts of ambushing in the jungles of Jauhar, where shifters and other earthlings were being beaten and sacked for their things before being threatened to leave Jauhar… and there was only so much these poor people could take before they fled the scene and packed their bags. What would happen if the Alkidike decided to spread out further than Jauhar and became a threat to all earthlings?

They were still rumors, and nothing could be proved, but many were beginning to cast a disapproving gaze toward the Alkidike and a weary eye to Jauhar’s borders...

Juahar was not Xilarn's home. It never had been, and it likely never would be. In fact, if it were completely up to him, he'd never set foot in that muggy, homicidal, god-forsaken land of mud and tar and trees again. At one point in his childhood, his family had also lived a reasonably safe distance away from that great swatch of darkened land. However, the war had brought them closer to Juahar's borders and apparently, closer to harm.

It wasn't impossible that they'd turned back at some point in the two years since the war's end. That would've been the reasonable thing to do, anyway. But Xilarn's father, Aamil was a stubborn man. While he hadn't owned a great plethora of slaves, losing the complete control of a whole other race was likely to offend him. Losing their more 'sensible' previous king would probably genuinely tick him off. And knowing that his three children had been on the war front for nothing was likely to positively enrage him.

But, to be fair, Xilarn couldn't even say for sure.

He'd left home and hadn't looked back since. No letters, no messages. The only thing his family had heard of him would be what Cether and Daia told them. And that was only if Cether and Daia had even made it back from the war. Something else Xilarn couldn't say with absolute certainty. Neither of them would give Aamil any positive news. Certainly nothing that would make him reach out to Xil. And that suited the young Fire lad just fine. While he couldn't be bothered to care what became of his father and siblings, his mother was another matter entirely.

She was level-headed and intelligent. The things she did and said made sense in ways that the things none of his other relatives did. Plus, she was his mother. Of course he had a soft spot for her. So soft that he hadn't seen fit to send work of his travels to her, hadn't bothered to check on her well-being, and wasn't even completely sure how to keep in touch with her. Xilarn fancied himself as a great son.

He sat in his still-being-renovated shack in Kesris, nibbling at the tip of his quill while Gadot watched with a cocked head.

'Dear Mother,'

Instantly, he scratched the line out. It sounded impersonal, unimpressive. It had been a great long while since he'd written anything, but still. For his mother, he should be able to figure something out. Mother dearest? Precious Mummy? He scoffed and shook his head. She was his mother, not a lover. Those were things that posed much more of a challenge. Speaking of which, he wondered where Kennet had gotten off to? Should he tell Cantara about him in the letter? How would she take that? Probably better than Aamil, but he couldn't hope to let one of them know without informing the other...

Perhaps later, after connection had been established.

'My Dear Mother,'

Better, he decided, despite only adding an extra word. More personal, anyway.

'I know it's been a while since I sent word to you, and I do sincerely regret staying quiet for so long. But you've been in my thoughts, and so regardless of how you feel upon receiving this, I had to at least get it out.

I'm curious as to everything that's happening at home with you. Cether and Daia should be around again. From what I hear, they won't have much to do with themselves under the new king. Looks like you'll be stuck with them, lest they decide to move out or travel. Cether was never the type to sit around for long, so I'd be surprised if he remained stagnant at home. And Daia probably is looking in to leaving soon, hm? I expect she's caught her eye on one man or another, so it's unlikely for her to remain at home.

Them aside.

Mainly, I've been worried. Last I saw of you, the family was still living in Tivrod. It's precariously close to Juahar's borders. What with the rumors of angry Alkidike on the winds, I wanted some way of knowing you were still safe. They're supposed to be limited to Juahar, from what I've heard, but it doesn't seem impossible that they'd find their way a few paces into Oba... Be on guard for them. They are...certainly feisty women, if nothing else. They shouldn't be a match for you, I suppose. It's been... a long time, hasn't it? You've no need to worry about me, by the way. I've found myself a safe, reliable abode far out of reach of anything.'

He snorted softly as his gaze scraped over the interior of his 'safe abode.'

'It might be foolish of me to say, but I've been thinking of visiting you. But my trepidation keeps me away. For now, I'd just like to hear of your safety. You'll be in my thoughts with each passing day.

Your Loving Son,
Xilarn'

The Fire man scrubbed his hand down his face as he set his quill to the side. He read it over once, twice. There was more to say and much more to comment on, but for now, this was enough. It was just... an introductory letter, anyway. She may not want to hear from him at all. Swallowing down the thought, Xilarn moved to his raptrix's side.

Gadot could serve as courier enough, if given a scent to find. He packed the letter in a scroll casing, tied it with a string of thread, then sent the beast away. He didn't know how long it would take or if Gadot really would be successful. Or if his mother was interested in sending word back if she did receive it, but it was all he could do for now.
