Members Present: Murdock & Skullbasher

Murdock had just come back from a walk when the letters were delivered. However, Skullbasher beat him to the courier. It was just as well though, Skullbasher had the ability to open the envelop without shredding it, whereas Murdock did not. He watched his new team member carefully open the envelop, who was making sure not to tear the flap that had been so carefully sealed with wax; this behavior struck him as odd considering the Rampardos' name, however, he had agreed not to question him about it despite the peculiar nature of the name. Instead, when Skullbasher was done with the envelop - whose wax was surprisingly still fully intact - he questioned him, asking, "Who's it from, or does it say?"

Skullbasher tilted his head slightly as he carefully unfolded the first piece of paper, taking the second piece of paper in his other claw as it was revealed. "It's from Serrin. This is one of a series of letters he's sending to all the teams. This second one is for me, it says."

Murdock nodded slightly, encouraging him to continue. He was quite eager to hear what Serrin had to say, despite his co-captain's absence. He wasn't sure why the little dark charmander wasn't here at the moment, but Cerrin would have the letter made readily available to him upon his return - along with any other major news or updates. As he listened to Skullbasher he nodded slightly, agreeing with what the Rescue Leader had had to say; Murdock had indeed done a lot of fighting that night. He also understood what Serrin had meant by "the full experience." The desperation of others was something that he would have to face, but the test had left a question unanswered; if something happened to a member of his team during a mission, how would he handle it? The logical answer would be to carry on, unless circumstances were extremely dire and jeopardized the life of a client or a teammate. However, saying that was one thing and doing it was another. Murdock was wise enough to know that the answer could only be answered truthfully by being placed in such a situation, which was one of the many purposes that the drill had been intended to serve.

In the end, the question would have to go unanswered for the time being. It did not mean, however, that he couldn't ponder the various outcomes, their pros and cons, as well as any consequences that would result. It was something to consider at least. Nodding one final time, he left Skullbasher alone to read the other note privately, saying thank you as he turned to leave again. He would give the Rampardos a few minutes before he returned again.

With Murdock gone, Skullbasher was left to read his personal note. He used just as much care with his personal note as he had used when he had opened the team letter. His eyes quickly scanned the paper, the note was short and to the point. Serrin was right about Murdock; the two of them had gotten along quite well in the days following the drill, and he had been treated with respect. He felt like a valued member of the team. The last part of the letter, he wasn't sure what to do about. Simply put, the real answer was no, however, he didn't want to explain that. He didn't like lying, especially to one of the guild heads, but the comment practically demanded a response of some kind.

Absentmindedly, he looked at the door to see if it was closed before his eyes turned to the desk in the far corner. Slowly, he walked over and opened one of the drawers and took out pen and paper. His pen-strokes were carefully done, it would be apparent to anyone who saw it that it was done slowly and with great care.

Rescue Leader Serrin
Dear Serrin,

XXXXXThe short answer to your question is no, it is not a cultural thing. The long answer is much too lengthy to put to paper, so I hope the synopsis that follows answers your question adequately enough.
XXXXXThe name Skullbasher dates back, in my family at least, to my Seventh Great Grandfather. We are unsure if any other branches of my family still use this name; however, as a boy I took the name upon myself due to the grandeur of the tales that have been passed down in my family concerning the original Skullbasher. For me, it was a way to honor my ancestor. I personally feel that it is a name to be proud of.
XXXXXThe tales of my ancestor are not something that I have spoken to Murdock about yet. He is aware that I do not use my birth name, but is unaware of why. It was something that, at the time, I wasn't sure he would understand or be interested in. However, after having been welcomed fully into the team - and getting to know my captain better - I feel more confident in sharing these stories with him, as well as any others who may be curious about them. One day, if you have time and would like, I would share these stories with you if you wish it.
XXXXXFor now, I thank you for the warm welcome that I have received from the guild staff. I look forward to working with the guild and its members.

Sincerely,

Skullbasher

When he was finished, he signed his name and took out an envelop and carefully placed the letter inside once the ink had dried. By the time he was finished, Murdock had returned. His captain was unaware of the contents of the letter, but he would need to make him aware or it soon in case Serrin said something to him. He didn't think that the same answer he had originally given Murdock would fly with the Rescue Leader. The story he had spun sounded plausible enough, but he would have to figure out what would sound impressive enough - with just enough truth added - to pass "inspection" without having too many questions to answer later. He would postpone delivering the letter to Serrin's mailbox till later this evening, perhaps by then he would figure out what "tales of grandeur" to tell.

Killian

Killian, take this to Team Forge’s room. I want you to leave it outside the door and then come straight back, understand? The Golurk understood the Green Eyed One Friend’s words perfectly well, and it was this task that he was completing now. The name was familiar to him as the Team Name of the Other One Friend, just as Killian’s own Team Name was Essence. He didn’t fully understand the Green Eyed One Friend’s purpose in delivering something to the Other One Friend’s Team, but it wasn’t his place to question such things, just to do them.

Coming to a stop in front of Team Forge’s door, Killian leaned down and placed a pair of items down before turning and leaving, briefly wondering if the Other One Friend was the intended recipient of the items. He thought so, but he didn’t grasp the concept of “present”, which is what the Green Eyed One Friend had called it first, along with the Other One Friend’s name. Skullbasher’s present was addressed to him and wrapped in red and white striped paper; the Rampardos would find a brown drawstring pouch inside, intended to be worn across a Pokemon’s body to carry Pokedollars and other small things. It was useful yet subtle, and Neo had chosen it carefully so that it would rest within reach of a Rampardos’s rather small arm-length: it had seemed like the right sort of present to get someone as thoughtful and practical as Skullbasher. Beside it rested a basket of spiced apples addressed to the whole Team with a note atop it in Neo’s distinctive scrawl.

Sending you best wishes this holiday season!
-Team Essence
