Even with the riders coming and all the tense anxiety in the air around the castle, tasks needed to be completed and completed quickly. It was more efficient to send out single knights to retrieve something that it was to send entire groups, so that was how Chris found himself layering packs onto his horse and riding out alone.
He didn't like being alone. He couldn't put his finger on why, but it gave him an aching feeling, like something was missing. He found himself turning to look for someone who wasn't there - a figure he couldn't even put a face to. Like it was muscle memory to look to his left and share whatever he was experiencing with someone who didn't exist.
He pressed forward at a brisk pace, trying to escape that feeling. The sooner he got this over with, the sooner he could get back to a castle where he was surrounded by people. QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 24 YOUR HP: 30

He followed paths for a good portion of the beginning of his journey, but eventually he had to veer off path to get to the more remote parts of the kingdom, where the real treasures were hidden. The land was treacherous where there was no pre-carved road for his horse to travel, and it wasn't long before he felt bad for the beasts frequent unsteady tripping over jagged land. He lead them to a clearing with a small stream and stopped to let the poor horse rest for a few moments.
It also gave him time to relax and he used it to stuff his face. Unfortunately, he wasn't the only one looking to bite into something. A low growl caught his attention and he turned slowly to find a wild dog crouched low with it's lips curled to reveal dangerous looking teeth.
Chris stood slowly, drawing his sword on reflex, but the dog was having none of it. It lunged at him with a horrible snarl, clamping it's teeth down on the metal of his gauntlets. It took more force than Chris wanted to use to finally beat the animal back, and he had scrapes and bite marks to show for it.
The bright side was that his horse hadn't been scared off, and he'd saved all his food from being thieved by an angry mutt.QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 24 YOUR HP: 20

He sat back down beside the stream, catching his breath after the fight and rinsing off the minimal amounts of blood. He'd just begun eating again when a massive black thing caught the corner of his eye and he screeched, dropping the dense rolls to the ground.
It was a spider, because of course it was. Chris shuddered and backed away from it. "You can have the rolls, spider, they're all yours."
And he hopped onto the back of his horse and rode away, because ******** all kinds of that. QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 19 YOUR HP: 20

As he rode along he swore he heard the sound of crackling wood. It grew louder and louder, until it was a roar in his ears that he couldn't ignore. He turned around on his horse and nearly fell off at the sight of a massive flaming beast chasing after them.
It took long strides, almost matching up to his steed's. Any faster and it would absolutely catch them, and he didn't want to know what happened then. He clicked his tongue, spurring his horse on faster. The heat from the monster was licking at his skin, making sweat bead across his brow. It was painfully, blisteringly hot.

He shouted out as he neared the location of the treasure, desperate to lose the fire beast on his trail so he could go and claim it.
Luckily, the noise he made caused an avalanche that put out the beasts fire, rendering it unconscious or even dead.
Unluckily, it also buried him and his horse. It took minutes of struggling to get them both upright and straightened out. But, he did it.
He took the mantle, which had a loud white geometric pattern, and headed back to the castle with it. QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 9 YOUR HP: 10
