STEP 2: HERE AND BACK AGAIN

Now, this is an survival rp exercise. The requirement to get a successful artifact is you must post 600 or more words, follow one of each step, and not run out of food. )

- At the start of the quest, each player in your party must roll 5d10 Add up all party member's values. That is the amount of food they carried with them. If your party runs out of food, you will have to head home, it's no good to die out there in the wild... (QUEST FAILED, RETRY AGAIN).

- If your Knight runs out of HP they PASS OUT and are considered OUT of this quest. That means they do not get the award. A group can choose to continue on without him/her or head back and abandon quest to redo.

- If you are doing this with a group, EACH person of the party must roll for each stage once before progressing to the next stage. If there is no post after 8 ooc hours, then you can skip them and they are considered KO'ed.

- Now, all players get one extra reroll. That means if you are solo OR group, and you do not like your roll, you can reroll ONCE. This applies to PER player.

- If you have attempted and FAILED this three times in a row, you may skip all the dysentery rolls meaning, if you roll for that, reroll instantly. This only works for the next expedition you do, and after that resets back to no skips.

- Please make sure ALL party members add this to their ooc post:

There were always more artifacts to be won, and they'd especially need them now that the darkness had been revealed. There was simply no way they could hope to fight against such hordes with the weak armor they'd been wearing, nor the weak weapons they wielded. Alexei needed to do more, he told himself as he stuffed his bag, do as much as he could to become a true knight, to obtain his Sacred Weapon.

Had there always been sacred weapons? Yes, surely there had. He'd always know about them, always wanted one, strove for one so that he could better save those in need. That was why he followed Gawain, after all - to save and heal. And sometimes, a weapon was needed for both.

So, the world had always been full of darkness? Those...things, those riders and horsemen, the bent, broken, and twisted nightmares that pounded at the gate. They'd always been there. They always existed, but somehow, somehow he'd been able to forget about them.

Lex's smile didn't fade, but sometimes it faltered. How could they all have collectively forgotten about that threat? It was all around him now, the dark pulsating sky, the miasma threatening to strangle him. Burgie was spooked, but the steed continued forward, guided by the wan light Alexei's torch offered.

He pulled the horse to a stop, feeling watched and more than a little paranoid. The bec de corbin was unstrapped from his back and he silently walked around the perimeter of his horse, squinting into the small patches of light the torch offered. He saw nothing, , not even the wet grass that send him tumbling backward.

His tumble was greeted by a grunt, and very upset grunt, and a frown. How could grass be so wet and slick? It hadn't rained recently, at least to his knowledge. It had to be something worse than water, but he didn't quite want to think about what it could be,

Probably blood. Hopefully just mud.

The couldn't be mud without rain. Alexei gulped, chiding himself for thinking about it. He didn't need to think about this right now, he just needed to slap the smile back on and keep moving forward, keep collecting artifacts, earn his keep and earn his Sacred Weapon. Then he could really help, he could heal and save.

The dropped food went unnoticed, tumbling away into the dark and more than likely consumed by something awful. Lex just rode on, focusing ahead.

Move forward at all costs.

He was still thinking about what he'd fallen in. Alexei could only try to get the visages of some poor sod alone in the darkness, trying valiantly to just find shelter, find food, escape the darkness.

Salvation.

Yet they died; and there were plenty more like them, like the fallen knights in the Dwarven tunnel. How many, Lex pondered with queasy sobriety, how many poor souls had died seeking sanctuary?

The apprentice had to stop his horse again, dismounting so he could vomit out the guilt and shame. It wasn't his fault they died. It wasn't his fault, it absolutely was not his fault.

But he would do his damnedest to make sure it didn't keep happening.

Alexei did not like stopping every so often anymore, but Burgie deserved a break - the poor beast was doing all the heavy lifting, after all. Carrots were supplied to the mount, and Alexei fought with a very crusty and possibly moldy end hunk of bread. It wasn't the most amazing food, but he had food at the very least.

When he heard the skittering noises of giant legs, Lex dropped the bread and jumped right onto Burgie, pressing him to a gallop through the woods, Yes, the shadows ahead were just as threatening as the giant spider behind them, but at least the shadows hadn't just attempted to assassinate him.

For whatever reason, Lex felt safer inside the cavern than outside where the shadows and the riders could freely hunt him down and spear him. In the cavern, he'd have to face them one on one. He could handle that; he didn't wield a bec du corbin for looks alone. They could try to come at him, and he would whack a few heads before succumbing. But he could always run, as he had from the Balrog.

He tired or running, however. How could he save and heal if all he did was run? The Sacred Weapon was the key, and he had to keep pressing on to get it.

In his introspections, the apprentice neglected to be on the look out for any sort of traps, which earned him a good graze across the back from a swinging axe.

Slowly, he exhaled, and smiled. He was still alive.

As soon as he left the cavern, Lex heard the screeching of eagles and felt the beaten air of their massive wings. The pick went up and he tried his best to strike before stricken, but one could only do so much damage when given the low ground.

It was a valiant effort, Lex ducking under the talons of one and smashing the spiked side of the weapon against the leg of the other eagle with a victorious shout, only to be raked by the first eagle as it spun around with an angry glint in its hollow eyes. The fight went on for a few minutes, blows exchanged, until the eagles realized that he was not to be preyed upon.

Breathing raggedly but smiling all the same, Alexei took the last few steps to where the shoulder pads lay, adding 'fought giant eagles and made it out alive' to his list of valiant deeds.

And there they were: large pauldrons embedded with exquisitely cut emeralds mounted along the shoulders, and engraved with beautiful silver filigree almost reminiscent of a forest. The armor was strapped to his horse when he left the cave, and Lex smiled yet again. He was that much closer to being able to help.

Alexei mounted Burgie again, ready to retrieve another artifact and take one more step towards being knighted. He was a patient man, but he wanted this excruciatingly more than anything else at the moment. If he could wield a sacred weapon, he could stop the shadows from hurting more knights, which would give the rest of them the time they needed to stock up, to fight back, to bury their dead.

A heavy sigh was coupled with the man's weary smile, eyes still holding somewhat of a shimmer to them. Things were rough now, after they had broken in and stormed their home. Alexei felt very much like they, the knights, were the ones who didn't belong at times - but this was the humans' world. The Great King ruled the land still, and so his foes would be vanquished.

Heels dug into chestnut fur.

Alexei still felt ill at ease every time he left Camelot, faced with the shadows and darkness surrounding what his torch didn't touch. He had to hope that nothing would jump out and attack him; his weapon was particularly useless on horseback, and coupled with holding a torch? A war hammer was no job for one hand. It required both shoulder working in perfect alignment, the full momentum of both hips swinging the torso in just the right rhythm, aiming just correctly to shatter bone and spill blood.

He thought he saw eyes, and nearly made Burgie charge, but realized they were only glinting coins. Why would someone just drop their silvers on the road to Camelot?

Oh.

Alexei felt compelled to at least check if there were a body to go with the silver coins. To look upon that body and pray to whatever gods were above, if there were. He didn't remember if he were religious or not, only the vague concept of a deity rattled about his head. Kings were generally appointed by a divine figure, if he remembered correctly.

The body he found was mangled, already decaying in certain areas in which a splash zone could be seen. Acid. Alexei cringed, kneeling down to check the cadaver's eyes - finding nothing but empty sockets. He could have lost his lunch, if he'd had any. Instead the two silver coins were picked up and placed over the hollow cavities, and Lex quickly went back to his mount.

It was not his fault the man had died, the apprentice continued to speak the mantra softly. Not his fault, nothing he could do. Only strive to move forward and prevent it from happening again.

All knights had to eat, even if they had no appetite. The body required nourishment, to turn into strength, which turned into power, and power let him save those who needed it, tend the wounded, and keep life going. So he ate on a cliff side, staring into the abyss. Darkness prevailed over it all, no longer the lush, mountainous region he'd once traveled through. It was sad, seeing the world become only pulsating shadow.

What was sadder, at that moment, was when the apprentice finished his meal only to stand up and nearly kick his bag over the cliff from clumsiness and a lack of peripheral vision. He managed to scramble and catch it, but not before food fell into the nothing.

As soon as Alexei heard the spider, he took off with Burgie, dropping the carrot he'd been taking out of his bag as a treat for the poor steed. He briefly wondered if the giant spiders in this forest weren't warped shades too, but he didn't care to find out.
