She’d just wanted to patrol.
Why was that so hard?

Was the Negaverse recruiting more and more lately? Maybe it was youma, but often when there was a youma aura there was another darkened aura with it - or even an aura of light, meaning someone already had it under control - and to deal with all of that, Ivy had been interrogated by her parents about her newfound tendency of entering her bed later than usual. All of that combined, Sailor Warhol was really not in the mood for anything more than a soft, pleasant patrol. But the world wouldn’t be so kind, would it? She could feel the aura of a member of the Negaverse a block away, like bones and blood on her tongue; this aura was new to her, and it rankled. This was Warhol’s neighborhood, her house only six blocks away. And with that annoyance eating at her, Sailor Warhol did what might have been the stupidest thing possible: she got close to them, hoping they didn’t notice, and pointedly cleared her throat.

“...do I need to put up a sign? The Negaverse isn’t welcome in this neighborhood. Now get out before I have to make you.”

Her voice was sharp, and the girl’s eyebrows were lowered, lending themselves to a glare that wasn’t particularly threatening. Then again - Warhol herself wasn’t particularly threatening, being short and chubby. Who knew? Maybe, by the only stroke of luck she’d had today, he’d be terrified of teenage girls.

...yeah, like that was going to happen.

Umber scribbled away notes into a small bound notebook that sat against his knee. He chose one of the type that bore their spirals at the top so his left-handedness hadn't caused him great grief while he continued to smear his graphite across the page. Basic senshi, he wrote, based on his perceptions. Beneath it he noted the neighborhood, and left blank space for prospective rounds. Revisiting was always a necessity, he figured. After noting the time in the top corner, he closed his notebook to tuck away into his back pocket. He still held the pencil between his teeth when the senshi in question caught up with him, poised and posturing on the rooftop he shared.

As he turned toward her (or half-turned, as he wasn't certain whether he would stay to confront her), Umber noticed that she both looked quite young and quite short. They stood possible a foot apart in height, which lent great advantage in battle - if not for his current predisposition toward physical activity, compared with a chubbiness that spoke of more sedentary preferences. Curiously, she possessed a certain confidence and insistence that she stood more dominant than he.

This intrigued him.

Removing the pencil from his mouth, he questioned her with even inflection. "Is this your territory then, Senshi?" Otherwise, he made no efforts to leave.

The Negaverse isn't welcome in this neighborhood. This neighborhood in particular. Perhaps she has friends or family here, or someone worth protecting in either group effort or solo. Judging by the lack of other signatures, the effort is probably solo.

She frowned - Lieutenant, then; that was what the weakest ones were called, right? - and his aura felt more acutely of dead things this close, but in a clean sort of way. That didn't matter. Everyone's aura felt different, the closer you got, the more you felt out for it with your brain: and the auras of every Negaverse officer were always like dead things and darkness. It came with the chaos and evil, Warhol supposed. Probably a perk.

"...This is my neighborhood, right. This is my territory. I protect these people - they're under the protection of Sailor Warhol. And you are?" Her voice shook a little (but only a little); the last time she'd been this close to a Lieutenant on a rooftop she'd had a very bad time. What Senshi of Moods can't even handle her own emotions? "Tell me your name, Negaverser, so I can -- so I can tell the people like me who to kill, if need be." Warhol stood her ground, hands clenched into fists, staring up at Umber and barely wavering in her glare.

"If you intended to kill me, then why would I give you my name?" Umber quirked an eyebrow at her. Easier if I remain nameless. How long would memories of my appearance last until the mind tweaked them out of proportion? Wager that against the number of officers with some kind of tribal accent, and a surfeit of tattoos. I may be easier to spot than I give myself credit for.

Umber fully faced her and crossed his arms over chest. Warhol. I'll have to remember that. Sailor Warhol. Was she trying to intimidate him? 'People like me' - did she think him new to the game? A lieutenant's aura spoke little for experience. He was starting to wonder if he should've promoted by now - if he should leverage more of himself into the Negaverse to secure a better ranking. But, if this girl thought him new enough that she was willing to talk instead of run or fight straight off, then perhaps his rank offered an advantage.

"You're..." He paused, gaze searching her features. "Somewhere between thirteen and sixteen, are you not? Do you know what it's like to kill someone, Sailor Warhol? Would you be able to end someone's life if you held their throat in your hands, with your thumbs posed above their hyoid? I wonder if you'd find it anticlimactic to feel the bones snap." At 23, with a hunter's profession, I've not had to end a life. Even with a residency of some months among the Negaverse - no murder. I suppose that question falls to me, too: would I be able to end a life if necessary?

I doubt I'd foster any compunctions over it
, he thought as his gaze fell to her.

"I didn't say I would kill you -" and she spluttered, hands moved into a tangle, at his guess of her age. "...my age isn't important. I've killed one of your betters; I just...it wasn't that hard. Are you all not trained?" Warhol took a breath, pulled her shoulders down, and composed herself to continue. "Look...I -- I don't want to fight you right now, alright? Just give me your name. A Captain wasn't a lot of trouble with my magic, and I don't think you would be either. It's rude to not use the proper name when you're talking to someone."

She blinked -- shifted from foot to foot -- and swallowed her fear the best she could, and Sailor Warhol did her best to keep eye contact with the much taller man.

Umber slipped hands in back pockets while his gaze grew half-lidded. This one seemed confused. "You didn't say you would kill me but you solicited my name specifically to inform others of who to kill. That is a direct threat." Why did his name hold so much import for her? The given reasoning of proper reference felt stilted, but being of a different culture, Umber found a lot of hangups in Destiny City that felt extraneous at best. This may be one of them.

But the Scout readily supplied information that piqued Umber's interest. Both eyebrows raised at her declaration, where his gaze grew more laden with suspicion. "You killed one of my betters." If she isn't lying, it bears looking into - and more information should be gathered on her for dispatching. How would I arrest this information without suggesting my aims? Goading her brought it to light, so goading might be passage to finding out. Name with rank and I can comb the database next time I am taken to the Rift. "I don't believe you."

"Prove it to me and I might tell you my name."

Deep breath. Out, in. Moods - be in control of your emotions, Sailor Warhol, or it will go badly. Deep breath.

"I didn't ask his name...he was stealing energy from a man. I took him by surprise, my magic caught him off guard, and I knocked him to the ground and broke his neck. It's not anything special." Warhol stayed quiet but firm, voice surprisingly strong for the low volume. "Why do you want to know? So you can kill me...? I don't think I need to tell you anything, agent of Chaos...you all take people's souls like they're candy." Her foot slid back a bit, getting the girl into a better, more balanced, stance. "It almost happened to me."

No name. No description. I won't be able to verify from that. Even looking at murders that occurred in this area isn't going to help me unless the Negaverse logs each officer's civilian name, and an exhaustive list of cross-checking ensues.

Her magic took him off guard. That's something worth remembering later.

"Umber," he gave at last. Was she so interested in fighting him? Attacking the opposing action was of less import to lieutenants - but since he fell into a rhythm with his primary duties, would dipping into secondary affairs benefit him in promotion? Perhaps subduing this one might yield more answers than goading.

Did you want me to cite an interest in killing you? Murder is so often spat upon in this culture. Justified, demonized, decried. How dare we kill for survival - like murder for retribution is somehow superior. "Killing you would be a waste - no different than what happened to that captain. No, there are better ways to repurpose you, Sailor Warhol. If you can take down a captain on your own, then you have some merit on the battlefield. And that merit is better utilized alongside the Negaverse." While she readied herself, he managed the same - legs apart for balance, primed to sprint toward her.

That stance has her difficult to take down. No matter - if I break her ankles, she will have trouble both fighting me and getting away. She is young; they will heal fast. And if we're lucky, all this wanton hatred will translate well in attacking her own side. Decision made, Umber sprinted toward the girl and dropped into a slide to impact one of her ankles.

Sailor Warhol pushed herself to the side even as soon as Umber (name filed away in her mind, wasn't that a color, she'd glazed with that before? burnt umber? that was the wrong train of thought so she didn't focus on it, gone as quickly as it'd come); she was surprisingly fast, but barely fast enough to dodge out of his way. A stumble - it took her too long to regain balance. Damnit. "I'd -- I'd rather die than be one of you, murderous scum. I protect people." Hands to her sternum, and Warhol muttered "Warhol Mood Reversal" fast as she could, holding the sphere close to herself: if Umber came close, she'd hit him, and hopefully that'd give her time to run.

"I help people."

Without striking ankle to slow him, Umber's foot impacted the parapet for a full stop. It jarred slightly. She continued her blind insistence, but he found no reason to respond to it - no reason to feed into it. Rather than fully standing, Umber dug his hands into the ground for purchase to launched himself at a low angle; if he could ram shoulder into stomach, it should wind her well enough to finish immobilizing her without great difficulties. Missing, though, meant nearly launching himself from the roof.

He considered it worth attempting, until he saw the curious orb appear in her hand.

Warhol mood reversal. Wonder what that could mean. 'My magic caught him off-guard' - and that one died, if that account can be trusted. It is a risk to proceed.

A worthwhile one.

No longer hesitant, Umber launched himself toward the girl with shoulder readied for impact.

Umber rammed his shoulder into Warhol's stomach and she cried out, hands fumbling until the orb slipped through shaking fingers to hit his shoulder; the hit knocked her off-balance a bit, and she slid backwards - almost falling. Oh please, please, please let it make him scared, if he doesn't I'm screwed, please be scared! All Warhol could do was try to take the air back in that Umber had knocked out and stare at him with fearful eyes; and maybe, inwardly, curse her magic's lack of consistency.

The connect felt solid; viscera gave way to his shoulder and he sank the hit just barely beneath ribcage. She would find herself winded from it, which amounted to all the effect he needed. He tried to pull back, and in that instant, felt something tap across his scapula. It was an odd feeling, surely, and he found himself not truly bothered by it. Might've been a piece of armor, might've been nothing at all. It didn't matter.

And as he looked down toward the senshi who clamored for breath, he asked himself if this mattered. Did it somehow benefit him to dispatch this girl, to drag her to their side, to let her go? Maybe, but the gains felt mostly arbitrary. And even when looking at the war as a whole, he simply felt too lackadaisical to apply the drive he held before. Why had it mattered so much to him earlier? And why bother questioning it if it amounted to so little import?

Stepping back, Umber addressed her with little interest. "Just go." Tangling with her demanded too much effort.

"Find something else to do." This is such a waste. With the magically-instilled apathy working into effect, the lieutenant turned from his target to start toward the home front.

As soon as Umber turned to leave, Warhol tried to take a breath that she wasn't aware she needed, making her way across rooftops and into streets as fast as she could, henshining down closer to her house than she'd been before. - the hit was going to leave a bruise, but nobody would see it because Ivy never wore anything that revealed any stomach. It'd be fine. She was gone before thirty seconds were up, aura snapping out like a lightswitch.

Ivy Sutors went inside, locked the door, and did her homework. She tried not to think about how close that could have been. But if the Lieutenant showed up on her patrols again - which hopefully he wouldn't, hopefully he'd look for a new hunting ground without a Senshi to guard it (and it felt wrong to hope for that, like she was condemning innocents, but the whole 'not dying before summer' thing was pretty high on her priority list) - she could do the same again.

The girl kept Lieutenant Umber's face in her mind, memorizing the way his tattoos showed on his skin, and knew that she could rest easy tonight.

Coming to his senses left Umber in a bizarrely jarred state. He questioned his own motives, the sudden lack of devotion he held toward the cause, before his attention came to the phrase she spoke. Warhol Mood Reversal... If omitting Warhol, since her name doesn't hold much importance here, 'mood reversal' is pretty telling. Surprising that I didn't pick up on it sooner, unless the magic shows particular constraint. I will be aware of it next time.

As will everyone who checks the database.

A close of his eyes, and any auras he felt previously had vanished. Nothing lurked within range of his detection; the girl was gone by now, blended in with the rest of the populace. Searching her out would prove a fruitless task by now; a senshi could be anyone.

Umber sighed through his teeth. He placed one booted foot atop the parapet for dismount. His mind wandered, though, and wouldn't allow him to rest. The amount of information drawn from this meeting proved pitiful at best - the senshi's name, the fact that she killed a Captain, and the nature of her magic. He would've liked to discern her patrol route and the name of said Captain, but such matters hadn't concerned her.

He dismounted from the lip of the roof and landed, functionally, in one of the alleyways below. He had more locations to document, and fostered no interest in spending time on his failures. He marched on.
