STEP 2: HERE AND BACK AGAIN

Now, this is an survival rp exercise. The requirement to get a successful artifact is you must post 600 or more words, follow one of each step, and not run out of food. )

- At the start of the quest, each player in your party must roll 5d10 Add up all party member's values. That is the amount of food they carried with them. If your party runs out of food, you will have to head home, it's no good to die out there in the wild... (QUEST FAILED, RETRY AGAIN).

- If your Knight runs out of HP they PASS OUT and are considered OUT of this quest. That means they do not get the award. A group can choose to continue on without him/her or head back and abandon quest to redo.

- If you are doing this with a group, EACH person of the party must roll for each stage once before progressing to the next stage. If there is no post after 8 ooc hours, then you can skip them and they are considered KO'ed.

- Please make sure ALL party members add this to their ooc post:

Dirge decided that questing by himself would be better, since he didn't have to rely on anyone else and he could be a real, true hero if he did this all by himself. He would get the glory, all his.

Really, bears as soon as he left Camelot's gates? That wasn't even fair.

Now, this was just unbearable. Being attacked while on the King's quest. How dare you, nature.

The cavern Dirge just entered was not inviting in any sense of the word. Skeletons, the echoes of something terrible, abandoned armor. Certainly not a scene he wanted to walk in to. He had to be brave, though. All knights were brave and strong and faced horrifying things, right?

Right.

Including swinging axes nearly taking off one of your hands. Holy s**t.

Dirge was almost there; almost there. The trek hadn't been too long, nor that arduous, save for being mauled by a pack of bears and nearly dismembered by an axe. Not nearly the sort of trials he imagined the Great Knights would encounter on their epic journeys.

But, he was almost to the top of the mountain. The treasure, the guild master said, would be up there waiting for him. He could do it, he would totally come back with an awesome artifact and prove himself worthy.

Or, he would have had he not just puked his meager lunch of rock rolls and thin hot water soup. That...well, that wasn't good. Time to go back to Camelot, and try not to die.

Dirge wasn't going to give this up. not until he came back with something other than an infection from an ancient axe. The guildmaster let him keep the map, Dirge having told the knight that he was still questing for the same artifact.

More food was put into his knapsack, and he was once again off to prove himself. Hopefully he wouldn't be defeated by something so embarrassing this time.

The rocky terrain outside of Camelot was home to many a vile creature (namely bears), but Dirge hadn't ran into any just quite yet, for which he was incredibly grateful - but that didn't mean he had his spear strapped to his back. No, he kept the weapon out and at the ready, which may have been what caused him to lose balance when he heard a noise that sounded very suspiciously like bears and topple over, landing flat on his back and unclasping his sack of food .

The young apprentice gave a panicked yelp, scrambling to his knees and flipping over, desperately reaching for a hunk of bread that had fallen out of the sack and landed on a small ledge just out of reach for his stocky arms.

Inching forward, Dirge did his best to lean over the cliff face and grab the bread, panting and sweat dripping down his forehead and into his eyes, salt stinging the sensitive organs. He closed his eyes briefly with a hiss, and suddenly felt very insecure - the hard packed earth letting loose dust and rocks not at all a comfort.

One loaf of bread wasn't worth falling to his demise. There was more food in the sack. He'd be fine.

Nope, not fine. Dirge had taken a seat on the trunk of one of the trees on the perimeter of the dread forest to rest for a few moments, maybe grab a quick snack from his knapsack.

Then he felt very uneasy in the bowels, and groaned. Not this s**t again. He looked balefully at his pony, an apology unspoken. He wondered if horses could smell as well as dogs. If so, this horse would be getting a few extra sugar cubes for his suffering.

Dirge was not one to be deterred by an uneasy tummy an a few painful minutes over a hole in the dirt. He grunted, taking more food and placing it in his rucksack, entirely determined to definitely not return empty handed this time.

He mounted the pony, and was off once again with determined eyes. He was going to be the hero, dammit.

Dirge was on high bear alert, squinting into the horizon for any sign of a shambling mass of matted fur. He saw nothing, heard no roars or grumbles. Thank whatever gods above. Maybe he could get to the forest without incident this time around.

Hopping off his horse, Dirge quickly realized he'd made a huge mistake once his boot slipped in the aftermath of a bear's feast. For a brief moment, his face had the most angry look - the bears had done him in again. He hit the ground, face planting right in the same pile that had started his whole downward experience.

"s**t."

The boy made a very disgruntled and upset noise when he got out of the stuff, looking forlornly at the hunk of cheese that had fallen in the pile of bear s**t. He loved cheese, man. Why did it have to be the cheese.

It took him a few seconds, but then he remembered just how much he was covered in literal s**t. There had to be a pond somewhere around here, a stream - he'd even go for a puddle.

He was fortunate enough to find a very small brook just a few miles ahead, and immediately stripped down to his small clothes. He dunked his face in first, scrubbbing and scraping all the dried brown gunk out oh is hair and every possible orifice. He splashed the water on his face multiple times, shaking his hair out and sighing. Stupid bears He forever would hate bears from now on.

Dirge sat for a while, taking in a a few moments of peace. Not much had really happened so far, since he got to Camelot. When had he got to Camelot, though? He couldn't remember anything before pledging himself to Merlin's ways. He'd been a knight apprentice for as long as he could remember, which was not very long at all. He knew he was eighteen, but he didn't have enough memories for those eighteen years.

Frustrated noises came from his throat as he laid bare skinned on his back, hard packed earth not comfortable nor terribly uncomfortable. That didn't seem right at all. For an eighteen year old boy, er man, there should be more memories. All he could think of was standing at the box, encountering sir Percival, the two ladies he'd spoken a few words to. This was incredibly unsettling. Surely there was more? A mother and father? Any sort of family?

He searched hard, eyes closed and lips taut. Darkness, grey blobs, nothing really. He was in a room with no candles and no entry or exit. Only one thing was in the room with him, and that was the knight's code repeating over and over every wall, words twisted and knitted into tapestries, the code ever present and overarching everything.

He shuddered, opening his eyes to be temporarily blinded by the sun and put his armor back on, and resume his quest.

Dirge mounted the horse and shuddered again. Best not to think about it.

He made it to the forest without further incident, a blessing in itself. Snack time was skipped in lieu of just eating as he rode, the horse put to an easy trot as he munched on a very stale baguette. He would complain, but the brook side experience still had his mind twisting the puzzle box.

A shuffling noise broke him from his thoughts, eyes wide with terror of the rumors he'd heard before leaving on the quest. This forest was filled with giant spiders and elves just as, if not more, deadly. The clattering shuffling repeated, and Dirge didn't wait to find out what was making it. He flicked the reigns and dug his heels in to the pony's sides, urging it to a gallop and leaving his bread behind for whatever was undoubtedly wanting to eat him.
