“I'm here!” Roshon gasped, skidding awkwardly into Malta's lair. He wasn't sure whether to be terrified or delighted, and – as he looked at the two orakoi that had hatched so far, HIS orakoi – he ended up falling somewhere in between.
Oh sis, if you could see me now... he thought, managing a halfway dignified whumph as he flopped down on his side. “By the tides...” he murmured gruffly, “They really are hatching...”
“Did you think I was lying? Did you think Soki's warrior was lying?” Malta asked, amused. She nosed her Orakoi to Roshon. “That's your father, lovelies.” she cooed, “He's really a nice male, under all the gruff.”
“I'm not.” he grumbled, even as he stretched out his neck to sniff his new children. His worries though – infinite in number – turned him to the eggs. “What about them? Are they going to hatch?”
“Yes, Roshon.” Malta said, “They are.”
“Are you sure?”
“I'm sure...” Another egg began to rock, “See? Theres the third one now!” she said happily, trotting over to hover over the sapphire-hued shell.

She was cramped, and it was difficult to move.
The egg had done its job over the days that she had grown inside of it. It provided not only warmth and nourishment, but also comfort as well. However, as time went on, she seemed to enjoy the confines of the egg less and less the larger that she got. All the room that she had to move around in eventually dissipated until she was tightly up against it, and that was when she decided that she had enough. There was no purpose for the egg anymore. All it was doing now was making things uncomfortable and a little scary, so there was only one thing left to do.
It was time to break free.
Crick.
She kicked at the shell, and small cracks started to form within it.
Crack.
With another kick, the cracks grew, and she could feel the shell weakening.
The little hatchling inside shifted herself, twisting in her confines until her snout was near the cracks she had just made. Then, with what strength that she had left, she poked her snout out of the spot and breathed in her first bit of actual air. Oooooh -- that was refreshing. The feeling of air within her lungs spurred Sevan onward, and she clawed at the rest of the egg until it crumbled into pieces beneath her.
She had finally done it; she was out!
Covered in egg membrane and still a little disoriented, the blue hatchling found herself looking around. She blinked, half tired and half confused, before a familiar sound came into her surroundings. It was her mother, and she met her eyes directly a few moments after breaking free from her shell. With all that time in her egg before, she had learned to recognize both her mother and father's voice. She would know them from a mile away, but it was so wonderful to actually see her in person.
Elated that she now had her mother near her, Sevan let out a happy trill before scuttling on over to Malta's side. Once she was in front of the Ysali, she gave her a gentle, affectionate nuzzle before curling up next to her. Yes -- yes, this was good. Mama's side was where she needed to be.

After herself and her brother, Ysalda had certainly tested the limits of her infant body, abound with wonder and curiosity but still small and new. Oncer her brother was sufficiently greeted — licked, nuzzled, marked, and made so that she knew he would know her — she had to resting, half atop him and half beside her mother while the other eggs waited. Slow, silly things that they were. So much to do out here. But nevermind that. Sleep, in the instant that the thought occurred to her, appealed immensely, and the process of napping overtook her all but before she even consented to it, her tired and tiny body needing the rest. She barely stirred at her ‘father’s’ initial entrance, but stirred a fraction, snorting into the dirt. He hadn’t been so excited to be near when she came into the world. Perhaps she was just too fast for him. Ysalda scrabbled, wriggling a little and half-tumbling off her brother before lifting her nose to sniff. Not as familiar of a scent as Mother, but still innately ‘family.’ She wondered if— At a crick, crack sound from another of the shells, Ysalda’s scales rippled, immediately alive again with curiosity, interest and energy. Her tail swayed side to side as she trilled and tottered over. New egg, new egg. It made it into the world before she arrived, and Ysa froze, lowering her snout to the ground and purring for a moment as she watched, half-entranced by witnessing the event again, from a distance. This one came quicker than her brother. Female in scent — like her! And boisterous, already starting straight over towards their mother. Ysa bounded excitedly — as much as her small legs and soft new body could accommodate for — and pressed herself to her sister with a pleased yip of greeting. This one was hers too.

“Are you sure that's what it's supposed to...” Roshon asked, frantic, as the egg rocked and cracked, nearly shattering with each of the orakoi's kicks, though the membrane within – which had kept it whole throughout it's incubation – held it back slightly. “Yes.” said Malta, trotting over and nudging him away before he could try to help. This one, she could see, didn't need help. “That's what it's supposed to do.” She purred as the hatchling clawed its way out of the rest of it's egg. So valiant! So brave! Their eyes met and Malta felt, yet again, that surge of love and devotion, that wonderful feeling. Was it something like the Bond that she felt to these three... soon to be four? Or, perhaps, it was more pure than the Bond between a Khehora and a Magescian. The specifics didn't matter. She only knew that she loved them dearly, every one, and that she liked this feeling of utter devotion and heart-wrenching adoration. “See?” she purred, nuzzling and licking at the little one, grooming away some of the egg goop, “She's fine.” “She?” Roshon came over to sniff, only to be startled by a little green bullet of a form. He yelped and fell back on his hindlegs. “Wha?!” “That was Ysalda!” Malta laughed, “The first to hatch!” She flapped a wing, using it to press both of the little ones to her body, enveloping them in leathery warmth. “She just couldn't stay asleep, not when there was another clutchmate to greet...” she cooed, snuggling them both. They were so soft and warm and new and hers...“Let me see them...” Roshon mumbled, getting to his feet in as dignified a way as possible. Malta lifted her wing slightly, not so much as to remove its shade, but enough to give her mate a look at his orakoi. He leaned in, sniffing. “They're both female? And the new one... she's Peisio?” “Mmm...” Malta hummed, agreeing as she watched the Orakoi. “And you... already named the other one?” “Yes.” she said, “Ysalda, for life itself...” she purred, “And the other one, the male over there, he is Kuasu...” she looked at him briefly, checking to make sure the little peisio was all right in his temporary aloneness. She would be with him shortly, once she gave Sevan her first meal. When she was ready. “Oh.” he squinted at the other one, the blue one with her thick fins and crown of horns. “Can we name her...” he said suddenly, almost pleadingly, “Sevan? Please?” Malta looked up at him in surprise, “Yes, sure. Sevan is a lovely name...?” Roshon rested, his head on his paws, quietly staring at the two that nuzzled into Malta's side. “Seveuthin was my sister's name.” he said abruptly, looking away. “Oh. I see.” Malta let that sink in before she turned to the two little ones, nuzzling them. “Would you two like something to eat? Or...” she churred at Ysalda, “A little more?”

Most probably would have been afraid to have another creature coming up to them, especially so quick after hatching. Yet Ysalda's familiar scent caught in Sevan's nose, and she responded to her sister's yip with one of her own. Ohhh -- she was her sister! That was nice! She liked having a sister! Perhaps they could play in a little bit, but not now. She was feeling droopy from having just hatched. Breaking out of an egg was a difficult thing. No one told her how tired she'd be afterward.
The little blue khehora curled up after greeting her sister, and let out a satisfied sigh. Her eyes then began to droop close, and it was clear she wanted a few minutes to regain her energy. So many family members already, and she had just shown up. Play time could come later. For now, she wanted to doze.

Malta gently carried the new finned baby to where Kuasu slept. “Naptime it is, then...” she cooed, snuggling them. “Roshon, make sure there's meat scraps ready for them.” she commanded, turning her glowing eyes to her mate.
“Shes healthy though, right?”
“Yes.” she reassured him, “And give Ysalda some too. She's going to grow big and strong.” She knew it.
In the meantime, she curled around the two that were asleep, giving them her body for comfort and warmth. What, she wondered, would the fourth egg bring?
