Jai came with a history. Lynnesse had known it when she decided to give the relationship a try. She never regretted it. Not for a moment. And she had been happier than she had ever been. It was simple, good, and hers. Though from time to time, she longed to go back the the hidden glen her parents called home. She missed them and wanted to see them.
But she was happy in her new life, and she didn't know if she was ready yet to face the inquisition that would come if she returned to visit and see her family again. Laures – daddy – was sure to give her the third degree, and act all overbearing and super protective ( she was his baby girl after all... or that was how he would see it). Gael and Aleda... she didn't know if they would even be around, or how they would react. And mom... it was simply too much. Though if Lina were there, she would understand and act as a buffer for Lynn, but she also had a life of her own, and wasn't guaranteed to be around, so she was … hesitant at best. Not to mention that her family would be all curious, and demand to meet Jai to make sure he was worthy of her. And she wouldn't subject anyone to that fate if she could help it.
One day perhaps she would be prepared to introduce the most important being in her life to her family, but not yet. She wanted the relationship to stay as it was for just a bit longer...
Perhaps Jai had understood her need to return to the glen, even if he didn't know exactly what was bothering her, so he went to spend time with the family he had before they met. She decided it was the perfect excuse for her to go see daddy, if no one else. She had sent 'Silli ahead, with a message to Laures. Who was more than happy to drop everything and leave the glen to see her on neutral ground.
The meeting had gone exactly as she had anticipated – down to the tears, laughter, admonishments and questioning of her daddy and even the scolding of Solas. Perhaps she should have done things differently but it was in the past. There was nothing she could do about it, though she would be more mindful in the future. She had even promised to visit home more often, and at least ask if Jai might be willing to accompany her.
Returning to her new home, to her mate, her hoofs felt lighter. Like some weight that she hadn't known she had been carrying had been lifted. She felt... free.
Seeing Jai had returned from his own family visit, Lynnesse lit up to see him. He truly was special to her, and now she was more certain that he was her heart. Her home. She trotted eagerly to his side and nuzzled him. 'Did you have a pleasant visit with your family, Love?'

The stallion stretched lazily, watching the sunbeams dance through the leaves overhead, thinking about his visit with his previous family. He wished he'd had time to make the rounds to them all, but his family was far too large and widespread for that to happen. Still, he'd missed the chance to see his mother on this trip. A pang of regret hit him when he thought about the fact he had no idea where his father was. His family was so fractured, he felt. It was one of the reasons he liked the quiet life he made with Lyn. He knew someday the peace would be shattered and they'd have to face their respective families Someday they would face that, but not today.
Jailhouse Rock looked up from his ruminations at the sound of hooves, the smile already spreading over his face. Lyn always made him smile, even if she wasn't trying. Especially if she wasn't trying. He watched her return to him silently, just taking her in. She seemed like whatever burden she had been carrying was now a bit lighter, which he was thankful for. He hoped one day she would bring him to meet her family, just as one day he hoped he could do the same for her.
For now, he wanted to just enjoy the secluded cocoon of their life together. He nuzzled her back happily, breathing in her scent. He'd missed her, despite the enjoyment he'd had visiting his granddaughter. He sometimes wished he'd waited to have kids until he's met Lynesse, but he couldn't bring himself to regret his decisions. He loved his sons, and his grand-kids, and he wouldn't trade them for the world. Still, he eyed Lyn mischievously, imagining her large with child. Perhaps someday.
He disentangled himself from her reluctantly to answer her. "My visit was lovely. How was yours?" He wondered how things had gone and if it had been as terrible as she'd thought. She hadn't come out and said anything to that effect, but prior to her leaving she was so nervous and uneasy. He could always tell what he was thinking. He felt she could always do the same to him. It was like they almost didn't need verbal communication. He would always value that about her. "Was it everything you hoped? How are your parents?" He wondered what they were like and if they'd like him. He almost worried about the fact Lyn wasn't ready to introduce them yet, but he wouldn't press the issue. He understood she needed time, just as he needed time to introduce her to his sons. He still couldn't believe he had adult children - or that Lyn accepted him so completely despite that fact.
"I love you," he added softly.

She noted the brief flash of mischief in Jai's eyes, and wondered just what he was thinking of. Though truly, it was nothing too terrible for her, she knew. She nuzzled him back happily. Now she was home.
'It went, better than I hoped.' She paused. 'I didn't see everyone. Just my dad and Solas. That's probably why it wasn't all bad. I mean, I probably deserved worse than some tears and admonishments... I was rather thoughtless.'
There was more to the visit than that, obviously, but two things Laures brought up, she needed time to consider herself, before bringing either up.
One, she was nearly ready to bring up... now she knew her family wasn't thoroughly disgusted with her, or too upset, she thought it might be almost time to introduce Jai to her family.
Not Bailey, yet. She wasn't someone to spring on anyone who hadn't been warned or prepared for ahead of time. It wasn't that Bailey was a shrew or insane or whatever. She was just... a dreamer who wasn't always the most easy to talk to. Not Laures either. He could be a bit much.
Perhaps, if she could find her half-sister, Lina might agree to a meeting. And if she happened to get along with Jai, they would have a good ally. Yes, she would try to locate her sister before bringing the issue of meeting the family up.
The other issue was foals. She knew she wanted to have foals of her own. She wanted a large family to love. And seeing how much he loved his sons and grand-kids, she was sure he would be fine with the idea of more. But she wasn't sure of timing. Did she want to give up the life they had together just yet? At times, if she were asked she would say whole-heartedly that she was ready for foals, but other times, like now, she would say she wasn't sure.
'And, well, it did bring up a few things...A few points I think I needed to hear, to consider.' She bit her lip a little nervously. They needed to talk about a few things, and she just didn't know how to bring them up, and she felt awkward about trying. ' I think we need to talk.'

She seemed hesitant, unsure of something. He knew the way they had gone about things would cause some trouble, but seeing her inner turmoil made it a little more real to him. They had been selfish; he knew that. Still, he couldn't regret it, not really. They'd been living in a peaceful, blissful bubble of love for a while now. He knew at some point that bubble would burst. He had hoped for more time, of course, but somewhere deep inside he knew the two of them parting ways to visit their respective families would bring reality down upon them with a vengeance. He gave a wistful sigh, mourning the illusion they'd been living in.
His heart sank at her words and tone. This sounded serious. Did her family reject him already, before ever meeting him? He hoped not. Still, the possibility loomed, dark and ominous. He wondered vaguely if it was because he wasn't a flutter. He knew some families liked to keep to the same breed, but Jai had never lived in such a family. His was always one for acceptance and variety... but he couldn't judge others based on his own family's practices.
"Of course we can talk, my love. There's no need to be nervous." He hoped his voice didn't betray the nerves he most definitely felt. There was a knot in his stomach that he tried to ignore. He offered her the most reassuring smile he could, hoping to strengthen her resolve to talk to him. He knew there was a lot she needed to say, and not all of it pleasant. It was clear from her nervous fidgeting and lip-biting. He wondered how much she would tell him now, and how much she would hold back.

She wasn't usually careless with her words, so when she said they needed to talk, she didn't mean it in a bad way... but with her nerves, and need to say it quickly, she didn't realise it could be taken wrong, but when she heard Jai's response and saw his face start to fall, it hit her.
She hadn't meant to cause any hurt or upset. Quite the contrary. But to speak her thoughts, ideas that had been brought to the fore of her mind by a few easily spoken words from her father's lips, she knew she would be shattering the illusion which they were so happily living in. But if it was for good or for ill, she wouldn't know. And she hated the uncertainty, but more, she feared the changes brought about would not live up to expectations in her mind. Or would make them grow apart, rather than closer...
But now that she said the words, it was impossible to call them back. For good or for ill. She could do nothing but move forward. To speak what was on her mind. Come what may.
Her wings fluttered briefly at her sides, a clear indicator that she was no where near confident about herself and what she had to say. She took a deep breath. What would be easier to start with? Leaving the bubble of the life they had started together, with just the two of them and rejoining the world... namely by starting to meet each other's families, or the idea of starting a family of their own. She just didn't know which to say. So without planning or forethought she opened her mouth to say whatever she would end up saying.

There were perhaps a thousand different things he could have guessed at when she had said "we need to talk." His mind had already been at work, thinking of the many things her family might find wrong with him, the many ways in which their lifestyle choices had hurt everyone they love. He was waiting for the punishment, waiting for that hammer to fall. He was READY for that.
What he hadn't been gearing up to hear was what had come tumbling out of her mouth. It took him completely off guard and off balance, so all he could do was gape at her for a moment. It wasn't that he didn't think about a family with her - hadn't he only a moment before been imagining her large with child? It was just that his mind was geared towards what he felt was expected after her visit with her family - and this was not that.
Finally he recovered himself enough to say "Are your parents so eager to be grandparents, then?" He gave her a rakish grin, eyeing her speculatively. "Or is it that in addition to the fact they've never met me you want to show up eventually and have them meet me AND our kids for the first time, all at once?" His tone wasn't playful anymore, but neither was it stern. He genuinely wanted to know her thoughts on this matter. Regardless of her answer, he felt the time spent in their happy bubble, oblivious to the world, was now ended. He felt a little sad at the idea, but he also felt excited at the prospect of moving forward with their life and making the big changes.
He couldn't stop the grin from plastering itself on his face. He was near-giddy with the idea of growing a family with her. "I do want a family," he said softly, "with you." As if to emphasis this he nuzzled her gently. "We DO need to rejoin the world, though, My Love. At some point, anyway. Are you wanting to start our family here, in the shelter of this place?"

She did not think that her parents would want to be grand-parents yet. That was probably one of the last things on their minds. She and her siblings were still babies in their eyes. Well, at least in daddy's eyes. But he and mama would probably be excited about grandfoals, at least, once the shock wore off.
But her question wasn't about them. It wasn't about anything more than the fact she felt like perhaps she was ready to be a mother, and she wanted to have a family with Jai. But more, she wanted, no Needed to know he felt the same.
'Daddy didn't mention it. Not more than tangentally, anyway. No. It's something I've been considering on my own.' She took a breath. ' It doesn't matter to me, if you are introduced first or at the same time as any foals we might have. They would be just as much a part of my life as you, and there is nothing they could say or do to change my mind.'
When she saw his smile, it was a huge weight off her shoulders. Any fears she might have held about the relationship – perhaps he didn't want a family with her, perhaps they were too different in age and experience.... perhaps, perhaps.
But now she knew. And she could be at ease with her decision. She adored Jai with everything she was, and if he hadn't been in agreement with the idea of having a family, she would have given up on her dream of having foals of her own. She couldn't have given him up. She nuzzled him back happily. They would have to leave their safe world, and let life intrude. But they could face it together.

He wrapped his neck around hers fondly, wanting to feel her warmth and listen to her heartbeat for a moment. He drew back after a time and simply gazed lovingly at her, soaking in the way her eyes were twinkling. She was so pure, so innocent, so perfect in every way. He felt the familiar pang of guilt that he had once laid with another, resulting in children Lynn didn't know. He had never felt for the other mare what he felt for Lynn. He refused to speak her name, even in his own head, for fear of the memory of that mare tarnishing what he had with his beloved. It seemed absurd now, of course. There was nothing that could possibly tarnish his feelings for this lovely mare before him, so bravely standing up against her family in pursuit of what she truly wants. He was once again taken aback by her strength and determination of will. Every day he was more and more convinced she was exactly his soul mate.
He nuzzled her sweetly once more, taking in the sweet scent of her. "I don't care where we live, or when we leave. I simply want you, and any foals you might give me. I want our family, always." He smiled reassuringly at her. He felt nervous to meet her family, of course. He was not a flutter and he knew that to be something of a problem. He hoped that her family would be able to see that he was good nonetheless, and made Lynn happy. It would be easier, he thought, if they had foals here in the safety and seclusion of the home they'd built. Easier, but not necessarily the right path. If they moved closer to her family, forcing them to see him daily, perhaps they would come to accept him and then bless the idea of foals.
He entertained these thoughts, but looking at Lyn he thought perhaps he had made her wait long enough to start a family. She was young and eager and she'd more than tolerated his own past, she'd accepted him fully. He knew without a doubt he would deny her nothing she asked of him. "I want to give you the family you deserve," he whispered softly. "If you want to start today, now, I will do my best. I want you to have every bit of joy I can give you, because you have filled my heart with such joy that I do not deserve. You are everything to me and I will give you everything you desire, whether your family likes it or not." He sincerely hoped her family would get to a place of accepting them, though. He mentally promised her that he would do his best to make that happen as well. He would make them all a complete family. She deserved that.
