Skall took a deep breath in. He was currently standing between two rather tall rocks near the barrier that separated the Stormborn from the roguelands. He didn't really like barrier duty it made him edgy, nervous. The last time he had come out here he had near killed the challenger who faced him and he had not forgiven himself for that. Granted the female was small and not accustom to fighting, making her easy to injure. Yes, she had flung stinging herbs into his eyes, but that didn't mean Skall had the rights to just go berserk on the poor thing.
So today on guard duty Skall was trying to prepare himself to not take a simple challenge too seriously. Challenges didn't mean fights to the death and he had to continuously remind himself of that. Probably didn't help that he considered himself a serious guy.
He chewed a bit of mint thoughtfully, and waited. Challenges were meant to test others so he merely had to treat himself as an examiner to a student. Easy enough, Skall figured. Now he just need to wait for a challenger to show up and put that mindset into practice.

Livius had grown a lot in the past few years. Born into the Ashnai'le as royalty, soon after he'd hit adulthood the pride disbanded in a terrible war. Since that time he had been prowling the rogue lands, gathering information about the surrounding area while growing jaded and gruff. Finally, he'd heard about the Myrsky Syntynyt - or, the Stormborn as they were commonly called - and had his interest piqued. A pride made up of all the strongest lions the lands had to offer? To him, this sounded like his cup of tea. Although Livius was never a fighter,t he war that had broken out in his old pride had given him enough experience that he felt confident challenging his way into the Stormborn was a good idea.
And that conviction stood as he approached the Stormborn lands, spotting in the distance a lion the color of the sun. As he padded forward, Livius noted that the other - a male - was larger than he first appeared. He'd heard that the pride bred the biggest and strongest, but didn't believe it until it was right in front of his eyes. A smile flashed across his face. This was it. This was what he wanted. Striding forward, he shouted "Hey! Anyone around here think they know how to fight?" He grinned childishly, an excited light dancing in his eyes. 'Well, here goes nothing,' he thought as he strode forward confidently, even as he realized the other would likely crush him. There were always more chances. Well, that was, if he lived to challenge another.

"Hmph." Skall snorted, an arrogant one showed up. Thankfully this worked in the challenger's favor, stormborn were practically born arrogant and full of themselves. Skall would be able to treat him as a peer, maybe a new fledgling reaver out on his first raid. Those were the ones that seemed boldest and eager to charge headfirst at anything with a pulse.
Skall shifted his yellow body away from the rocks he had been leaning on and approached, sizing his much smaller opponent up. "Greetings, challenger. I am Tordenskall. I take it you wish to join the stormborn do you?" He asked, not quite expecting an answer. Skall withdrew his claws as he walked on, continuing to stare with his dark eyes on the other male.
"The rules are simple, defeat me in battle and you may join us." He then got a running start, preparing to pounce. "Otherwise, leave!"

Immediately Livius could sense the other's experience and the entertainment value Livius himself seemed to be providing for the other, Tordenskaal. Realizing the other had his size and experience on his side, Livius could only use his meager strength and stealth against Tordenskaal. Deciding to distract from his slight appearance, he announced himself to the other, "Livius. You shall remember my name when I stand as your kin." While his responder readied himself to run and pounce, Livius chose to stand his ground for a moment, then charge head on at Tordenskaal before quickly dodging to the side and raking his claws down the length of his opponent's body.
It was in the moment after his first attack that Livius realized he could die. The Stormborn were renowned for their fighting ability and the challenge itself opened him up to the imminent danger of injury, but making the move to actually fight a member of the Stormborn was a possible death sentence. Only fate controlled now how he fared now.

As Skall charged he noted his opponent chose to stand his ground. A foolish move, Skall's mere bulk would knock him over. He thought that up until the moment his foe, no, his 'student' dodged out of the way and scraped up the side of his body. He fought to hold in a cry of pain from that, and swiveled his body to turn around and face Livius, claws ready to slash across his opponent's face.
Skall near had completely forgotten the little short pep talk he had given himself over how he wasn't going to treat this like a serious fight. How it wasn't to-the-death and how he was an examiner and the challenger Livius was his 'student'. In the moment of his second attack he forced himself to remember all of that, and decided that whether his hit landed or not, he'd pull away after and see what his opponent would do next.

His hit had landed cleanly and Livius could only tell that it had done damage by the expression on Tordenskaal's face. Immediately following his claws raking down the side of the other's torso, there was pure bloodthirst glinting on the other's face. His expression changed, however, to a sort of eery calm before he came at Livius with claws extended.
Livius attempted to react, dodging to the side, but Tordenskaal's claws still managed to scrape his face, drawing a bit of blood. He could feel the stinging in his cheek, but refused to acknowledge it. He had a challenge to win. Charging at his opponent, he turned quickly, swiping out an extended paw in hopes of catching the other's throat. Livius was not used to fighting to this extent and had already begun to tire a bit - not visibly, but he was realizing, amidst his next attack, that he should've done more to prepare himself.

He had to admit, he was satisfied to see that blood had been drawn on the challenger. 'Good', Skall thought, 'Maybe now he knows who he's dealing with.' As an 'examiner' he wasn't to be taken lightly. None of the stormborn were.
As he had promised himself, Skall waited in his position to see what the challenger would do, and was a only slightly surprised when he had turned and aimed for Skall's throat. The reaver ducked to avoid the claws, despite knowing well that his mane would have likely protected him. You could say it was his instinct to avoid sharp, pointing objects, hurling towards his body, and that could be the reason behind his ducking.
In doing so positioned himself very close to the ground. It wasn't necessarily planned, but from where he was he figured it was a good opportunity to pounce. The yellow lion kicked his feet from the ground, springing up in an attempt to knock his opponent over. Or at least bury his claws into the challenger's side.

Livius was satisfied with his last point of attack, seeing in Tordenskall's expression that it had been a slight shock, although not as effective as he'd hoped. Catching his breath, he turned to position himself for his next attack. That was when Skall's body crashed into his, claws first. Livius struggled not to cry out in pain at the impact, instead ejecting a heavy 'oof.' He landed on the ground and clawed his way out from underneath Skall's heavy body.
While he was doing so he sank his claws in as deep as they could go, attempting to cause as much pain as possible. He could still feel the stinging on his cheek, sodden from the blood Skall had drawn, and intended to leave the same feeling on the other. This fight was already wildly uneven and Livius didn't need it being much worse. Sinking his final claws in, he finally freed himself of the other and stood, breathing heavily, knowing another attack was coming his way.

Having claws sink into you was hardly a comforting feeling. Skall gritted his teeth in an attempt not to scream out with pain as Livius dug his claws deeper and deeper into his flesh. He couldn't say he was used to it but Skall could certainly say he was adjusted to dealing with situations like these before. So long as he didn't let on the amount of pain he was in, and instead focused on something else, like planning his next attack, then he was able to keep a level-head.
He in return buried his claws into his opponents back, freeing them only when his 'student' had struggled free.
This time Skall stood and eyed the other, also breathing heavier. He could feel the blood trickling out of his wounds, but that wasn't enough to stop him. The yellow lion bore his fangs in a half-roar as he pounced towards the other, aiming to sink his teeth into the other lion's shoulder or neck.

Livius was glad to see his advance had a profound effect on the other, but barely had time to enjoy that small victory. His opponent immediately pounced on him, sinking his fangs directly into the curve where his neck connects to his shoulder. Livius roared out in pain, completely unable to avoid betraying how much that had hurt. His ears were pounding; he was sure he could hear the heavy beat of his heart and the rush of blood pour from his shoulder.
Responding in the only way he could, he extended his claws and lashed out at the other's face, feeling his claws connect, but only barely. He wracked his body, intending to free it of the pain Skall was currently still inflicting. It didn't seem this challenge would turn out quite in his favor.

Skall was pleased to have have his teeth found connection with the shoulder-joint of the smaller lion, though perhaps due to the fact that he almost felt her certainty that he would have touched mane instead the yellow reaver slightly misjudged how hard he was biting. Or it could have been the fact that they had both nearly fallen over from his pounce.
Either way, as Livius roared Skall knew loosened his grip on the other male. He pulled away his face for a moment and felt only the light scratch of Livius's claws rake him as he did so, yet this somehow managed to catch him by slight surprise. The yellow lion snarled and retaliated by jumping on Livius and intending to hold him still, even if that meant by pressing down on that neck of his.Ruler of Everything So sorry for the wait on this! Livius yelled out when Tordenskall landed atop him, not quite expecting such an attack. He was a large lion, and did a great job to suppress Livius's lungs from working properly. Growling, he kicked his back paws up towards Skall, attempting to get his opponent off him as quickly and easily as possible. Unfortunately, however, Livius was bleeding, out of breath, and just overall not a match to the mighty Stormborn he had challenged. "I concede!" He shouted, knowing the male wouldn't take it in any sort of kindness.
Attempting to roll out from under the male, Livius groaned. "But do not think," he grunted, still trying, "That this will do anything but determine me to work harder. I will be back." He huffed, losing any previous determination he had to prove his worth to this lion. This fight was over, it was clear. But that did not mean there were not going to be others. There would be redemption yet. CaliWolfe After Skall lets him go I'll have his slinking away and we can be done. xD Thank you~

"I concede" rung in his ears like the lovely sound of victory. Slowly, Skall backed away, suddenly all aware just how much he was out of breath. He took the moment to sit upon what had just been the battlefield between his 'student' and himself, raising a paw to wipe away where small beads of blood trickled down his face.
His eyes did not shy from Livius however. He would be back, huh? Skall's face twitched for a moment revealing a smile under his glare. "Humph." He snorted. "So be it then." It was a satisfying feeling to know his challenger wasn't going to give up after one lost fight. Maybe he would have what it took to be a stormborn...
"Go train, come back later. I'll be waiting." He said calmly, almost dismissively.

Livius watched the smile break out on Tordenskall's face, entirely unsurprised. It was just like a pride of fighters to be, well, haughty about their own skills. But that was why they were renowned for their talents - they were the Stormborn. Best of the best. They deserved to be haughty. If anything, Livius was getting off easy - at least he wasn't dead, after all. The lion held gaze with Skall for as long as he could, before looking away. There was nothing left to be said. Purposefully, he turned tail, and headed back away from the boarder, towards the rogue lands. Limping all the way.
