Gnat had gobbled what remained of the omelet in her bare-bones dorm room, leaving the dirty plate behind with a vow to deal with it later before making it down to the training grounds. They were both alien and familiar, and inwardly she groaned at the possibility that she might have to actually bother to summon her weapon. Ned was still snobby pain in the a**, and she'd made it through most of her time away by ignoring him.
She didn't see her friend yet; it was still a little early. She began stretching in between face-cracking yawns. She wondered if Peyton had as interesting a catalog of the last two years as Tuck and Evan did.

It was quite possible Peyton had managed to surpass both Evan and Tuck's catalog. It had been a long two years, the dainty Sun had been through a lot, and it had all accumulated to change the bashful, sassy little spitfire Gnat had left behind into something else completely. When the reply had come she'd just stepped out of the shower, and a response had been thumbed out one handed as she dried herself off. There were many physical difference. Some would be easy to see, obvious and conspicuous like the scars on her shoulder and the top of her right foot, or the eclipse team ink on her back. Others were hidden; more ink, more signs of wear and tear. Though perhaps the most noticeable difference wasn't a physical one. Or at least not in the same sense. Pale eyes were harder, demeanor more confident. She wasn't the easily flustered virgin anymore, she had grown, and lived, and experienced, and she was more for it. It relayed in the cool lavender that narrowed in on the other Sun as she came strolling across the lawn to the training field. A twitch of her lips, the set of her shoulders and the sway of her hips. The coat, if nothing else, was a dead give away of just how much had changed.

Gnat glanced up from where she was doing some real pathetic cat-cow looking stretches on the floor. Her lady senses were tingling - that is, the senses that told her someone was probably staring at her and she should likely make less of an a** of herself. Oh. Oh.With all the maturity of someone who had been trapped in a time capsule since puberty and had not changed at all, she wolf whistled. "Damn girl, nice coat. Nice everythin'. You been busy?"

This just seemed all kinds of wrong. Peyton stopped short a yard away from the other Sun, hands planting on her hips as she looked down at her. "The hell you doin?" She did, however, appreciate the whistle. Irritated as she might have been with the girl, she would accept th compliment because Peyton had worked damn hard for her rank, and she was proud, damnit. "Busy is one way of putting it." Lavander eyes flicked to Gnat's very familiar coat, then back down to her face.

She saw that look Peyton.
Gnat clambered awkwardly to her feet and refused to make any excuse at all as to why the now-two-year-vet was still, well, a trainee. She pretended to be busy brushing off her coat.
"Yoga. I found some like, books, y'know, while I was gone - the other base had a really lame library - so I was like, you know what Natasha, it is time you take control of yourself, get you sommat yogi s**t. Get in touch with your like, chi. Nama-stay," she added, putting her hands together in front of her chest and trying to balance on one foot.
She very nearly fell over.

"Yoga." The tone was deadpan, the features less than amused. No doubt the daintier Sun's mood had not gone unnoticed, but Gnat had given no reaction to the chilly welcome just yet. That, in itself, did noting to cool her temper. If she had just called, or texted, tweeted, write a damn letter, it would have been alright. Gnat would still have been gone, but Peyton would have known she wasn't dead. No one knew anything, not Evan, not even her own brother. She had held onto the hope that Gnat was alright. That she'd been transferred, but it hadn't been easy. People left. They just did. Maybe, just maybe, if the her split with Noah had gone differently the string of Gnat's abandonment wouldn't have been so very raw after two years, but it had, and now the taller Sun would suffer for it. She was happy, of course, to see her. It was an absolute relief that she wasn't off dead somewhere, but the happiness that should have been there was currently buried under a think layer of old issues and anger thinly veiled behind the slight upward tick of painted lips. When Gnat stumbled she reached out to catch her by the arms, helped her regain her balance. Then, without so much as a word of warning, she was sinking a fist into the other girl's stomach. Well, she had asked Pey down here to train... HP: 50 DMG: 5

Pey was so nice, Gnat relfected, as the other girl reached out to catch her. She was so lucky she had friends like- OOF. When she got her breath back, she managed to cough out a strained, "Yeah, okay, I'm sorry." Oh well. At least she could count on the other sun hunter to be direct. Gnat stumbled a little ways away, and summoned her weapon begrudgingly. She supposed Pey hadn't called hers yet to be polite. Natasha, on the other hand, was pretty much terrible at anything besides pouting and trash talk, and relied heavily on her weapon for even the most remote combat prowess. Good morning, Natasha. The voice in her head sounded smug. She chose to ignore it. The sucker punch, however well-deserved, had left her feeling a little irritable, so she swung back with her un-gauntlet-ed fist. She totally missed. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA...d**k, she thought back. HP: 35/40 DMG: betrayal

'Yeah, okay, I'm sorry.'It really didn't help. If anything, the apology only seemed to make the blonde angrier. She watched on as Gnat stumbled away from her and summoned, that odd little smile fading away altogether as the hurt she'd felt over the other girl's disappearance rose back to the surface. Two years, and it still stung. Warrick remained as his totem because Peyton didn't trust herself to have him out in that moment. It had only been a couple of weeks ago now that she'd gotten carried away during her spar with Chel, and she didn't want a repeat of that ending. Politeness didn't have a whole lot to do with it. Self-restraint. It kept her from slamming a fist into the side of Gnat's head as she charged in for a counter attack. Instead she jerked sideways, pushing a hand into Gnat's back to send forward and past the daintier girl as she turned on her toe. HP: 50 DMG: wat

"Okay," Gnat began, breath mostly restored, "You're mad. Tuck's mad. Everyone's mad. I get it, an' I said I was sorry. I just had to like... Figure stuff out-" And then Pey was dashing past her and pivoting gracefully on one foot. Gnat had to admit that the other hunter had always been the better fighter, but now she was completely outclassed, and she still hadn't summoned her weapon. Gnat tentatively directed an open-palm slap behind her, meant more to keep the other girl away than to injure. HP: 35/40 DMG: 3

The hit pushed her back a step, but it was a light thing. "I know." Her voice still held that angry edge, but cooler now, almost detached. She waited until Gnat had her feet planted, then she was rushing again. Fast. Almost unnaturally fast. She cocked her small fist back, body twisting, and pulled it back around to bury bare knuckles into the poor trainee's stomach. "That's why I'm not summoning my weapon." A little context here might have been required for Gnat to understand why her small friend was reacting to her disappearance and sudden and unexpected reappearance. "Did I ever tell you about life before deus?" There as an unnatural chirp to her voice. "I don't think I ever did." She'd told no one before Taym had stepped into her life. HP 47 DMG: 7

Gnat gaped as Peyton seemed to move superhumanly fast, one second a few steps away and the next - For the second time that morning, Gnat was gasping like a fish. There was a moment where it was entirely possible she might hurl on the other sun hunter's shoe - which would probably not be conducive to making amends. She wasn't sure how FEAR shields worked; not entirely anyway, but she suspected she might have some interesting bruises at the very least. "No," she coughed in reply. It seemed best to answer, especially given the chilly, serial-killer-esque tone her one-time friend had suddenly adopted. So, yeah, maybe she had sorta ******** off to god knows where without letting anyone know or like, bothering to call. But she wasn't dead, right? She just needed... Gnat didn't know what she had needed, and that made her more angry than the beating. She swung her gauntleted fist again, this time not as careful about where it connected. If only Gnat knew how very far the dainty Sun had fallen since she'd left the island. Ned connected with Peyton's cheek, sent her head back sharply, but she was smiling as she turned back to face her. It would have been sweet if pale eyes hadn't seemed so empty. "It was pretty normal. Mom, dad, and Astrid, nothing too special." A small step forward. "Your typical happy family, least til I was ten. Then my mom died." Peyton chuckled, and it was every bit as hallow as her gaze. "Not just died, though. Aszy and I were in the car when it slid off the road and flipped into that tree. I dunno how much she remembers, she was hurt, but I remember." The spiderweb of cracks across the windshield and the limp arm hanging between the front seats as the alarm blared and the little girls in the back seat hung helplessly from their seat belts. Another step, faster, and a delicate fist came around from the side to connect knuckles to the taller girl's hip. "Dad never really recovered after that," she continued, not skipping a beat. "He functioned, sure, had to provide, but he wasn't really there anymore." The first thread of emotion slithered unwelcome into her voice,

She grunted and shuffled away, nursing her side, as the other girl continued circling her and talking. Just talking. But to Gnat, it felt like a noose slowly closing in. Everyone else has had it way worse than you, and they managed, it whispered. She could feel her heart beat, and the world drew further away as she receded into her own thoughts. Why can't you? look how you've made others suffer. Get it together. After all, you've had it so easy. Why can't you just stop being so selfish? She shook her head to clear it, trying to wipe away the cobwebs of anxiety with violence and action - like she always had. She struck out this time, hard, forgetting that she was armed and her opponent wasn't, forgetting that this was supposed to be about Peyton's feelings and not hers. It didn't matter anyway. She was just going to ******** this up like she had ******** up everything else. Her weapon was silent, but she was certain he was judging her self-flagellating thoughts, and it only sent her deeper into a sullen silence. Another powerful blow to the face had the smaller Sun rocking back, staggering and working to keep her balance. When she lifted her head her lip was split, swelling subtly. It would be a hell of a bruise later, for sure, but it wouldn't last long. They never did anymore. It was almost disappointing. Pey touched the back of one hand to her mouth, looking down a the blood before looking back up at Gnat. "So," she continued, as if the other girl hadn't just clocked her in the face. "After that, we moved around a lot. Dad always looking for better jobs, never settling. We didn't stay anywhere longer that a year. There wasn't any point to making friends, you see. Cause we'd never get to keep them too long." Her tone kept to that chilly, matter of fact drone as she spoke. "Anyways, the point of the story." She rubbed the blood off the back of her hand with the thumb of the other. "People are never around very long, so there's no point getting attached to them." At this she'd look up, searching the taller girl's face with brows raised and expression expectant. Whatever she was hoping for. Whatever reaction she might have wanted, her temper seemed to get the better of her as she took a quick step forward with one small fist cocked back. When she swung, sh was aiming for the other Sun's face. HP: 33 DMG: 4

The blood on Peyton's lip only made her feel worse, until it seemed as if her nerves were hot wires, an electric pulse itching under her skin.
Look what you did. Look what YOU did. She was your friend.
As her words washed over her, she started to let her hand fall - And then the other girl's fist connected with her cheek. It wasn't hard, but it hurt. She shook her head to clear it. The punch was like a cold splash of water, and she found herself able to more think clearly.
"No," she retorted. "No, that ain't true." Gnat ran her free hand through her hair, a nervous gesture.
"I'm sorry Pey, I had no idea, I really didn't. It's just..." she trailed off, falling silent for a few moments.
When she began again, it was much softer, almost a whisper - the words seemed to fall from her lips almost unwillingly. "When Tuck disappeared, I didn't understand it. They'd said missing in action, like he'd died. But, y'know, it didn't feel right. He couldn'ta been dead, I thought. Not without me knowing. And then - finding him here - I was so relieved, but so-"
and I can never tell him-
"-mad, I guess. Like, why didn't he come home? Why did he leave mom and dad? An' I could never be enough for them. So I thought, I mean. After things got too weird, I couldn't make any more excuses - so I ran away." She stared at her toes.
"I did the same damn thing he did. I don't even deserve to be angry. And then I got here, and, well."
She sighed.
"I didn't really feel like I fit in. Tuck had made a new life here, and I was just taggin' along, the second-rate sister, like I always was. So I did what I always do." She glanced up, biting her lip.
"I ran."
Gnat took a few tentative steps forward, de-summoning her weapon. "I deserve the a**-beating of the century," she added, a wry attempt at humor. "An' here I am bustin' your a** for giving a s**t about me."
She crossed her arms across her chest, hugging herself. "I guess I don't really deserve any friends, so I won't blame ya if you're still mad."
