Sanele and her friend Sabiyya followed Khewzi as he took them to another section of the ranch.
“Today, young ladies,” he said in his soft whispery voice; “You are going to try and break and train some new Xaraan.”

“Break?” Sabiyya asked hesitantly, “That sounds... painful.”

He chuckled: “It will be..for you! It just means break them to the bridle, get them used to earthling’s and obeying orders. Some take it to mean breaking their sprits and freedom.. but here we do not do that. We slowly get them to accept us and then we begin the process of training. What use is an animal who hates you and will only obey if you beat them? Nothing that’s what. Not only will they run away at the first chance, they will aways act up and never achieve their best if threatened. Through kindess and compassion we can get our Xaraan to become their best.”

Sanele smirked; what Khewzi said could be applied to people too! Not that she’d tell Sabiyya and her nobility that! Biya probably knew… even if she did not like the fact her slaves were not there to wait on her hand and foot anymore!

“Are they used to people at all?” She asked.

“Nope! Fresh caught from the wilderness.” He chuckled as she blanched. “This.. will be enlightening I think for both of you!” He chuckled as he left them at the gates to a large barn with reinforced doors.

She looked at Sabiyya, “Well, Biya… be prepared for bruises and cuts… I’ve seen some of them that come I wild before... ain’t fun at all.”

“You don’t find this interesting.” Sabiyya asked, her eyes glinting.

“Mm.. not really. I’d rather take some slightly trained ones over wild ones ay day! They don’ bite.” With that she opened the door, where a tall oban stood waiting for them.

“So you two are the chicks Lan wants to train.” He growled, the deep voice echoing in the empty barn. “Hope you know that this ain’t an easy task. I’m Juli Valladur, in charge of breaking all the wild ones that come in and testing them to see where they’ll fit best.” He was tall, a good two heads and shoulders taller than Sanele and broad. I’m not surprised he can get the Xaraan to obey him, wonder how he tests them? Since I doubt he could ride the smaller ones! She hid that smile as she and Sabbiya approached.


“I’ve got two smaller ones for you to try and catch… Figured I’d let you see a younger wild Xaraan before I toss you at the larger ones.” He grinned, “Since those ones are a lot more dangerous and lil girls like you two ain’t ready for em yet.”

Sanele scowled and entered. There were two Xaraan and they were not.. small. Small compared to the larger Xaraan that she had seen Lan bring in but not as small as her Nala. They might be good racers, she thought, though I need to see them run first.

Alright, let’s see if I can at least get close! She thought as she and Sabiyya cautiously approached. The heads came and up and the Xaraan snorted, the large clawed hind foot scratching the ground in agitation. Sanele stopped and rummaged around in her pouches for something to try and tempt them.

Sabiyya continued to approach, hands held out as she made soft clucking noises. It didn’t seem to work. Sanele eyed them. They were both really young looking; perhaps they had wandered too far from mother and were now on their own? Could explain the nervous energy she felt from them.


She waited, backing up so that they didn’t feel crowded.

“Not going in?” She heard Juli growl from his resting position on the fence.

“They’re young and I may make them feel crowded.. they’re already nervous so no need to make them feel threatened.” She responded.

“Not how you learn girl….”

“And getting trampled cause I spooked them is? I’ll wait till they calm down or at least accept her before I enter and try to get close thank you very much. We are supposed to tame and train them.. not scare them and potentially cause an injury!”

He chuckled.

“True….”

One suddenly darted forward, squawking angrily, snapping at the air where Sabiyya had been.

“See?” Sanele said; “Hey Biyya… I got some of the treats I give Simba…. Want to see if that works?” She raised her voice slightly. Her friend nodded and backed off.

“Your turn now.” Juli said in a voice that broked no arguing. Sanele shrugged. Fine with her!


Except it wasn't..... The Xaraan did not respond to treats at all.. instead they got more aggressive than before. Sanele was certain she and Saibyya were not doing this right.. but what were they supposed to do?
