Oh dear...looks like someone enjoyed playing in the road a little too much! The Aeterna hovered around the child that had decided to chase her ball into the road - hadn't parents heard of fences when near such dangerous places? - and was there to wrap his arms around her the moment the car struck her small frame. The body went one way but the soul remained in his arms, making his tail wag happily. Hurrah! He'd caught it!
The wagging of his tail slowed as car after car zoomed by. Well, everyone was driving very safely now that that little girl had been hit, weren't they? Perhaps it would be best to move on and find another location along the road. He let his ears twitch a bit before heading to a new location, further up the highway.
The new location was a good idea. He'd only been there a few minutes before a reckless driver decided to respond to a text. In a matter of moments there was a pileup. Most were okay, but there was one man in a tiny car that had been sandwiched between a semi and an SUV. The husky made his way through the ruined vehicles just as the man struggled to take his last breath. He whimpered softly and reached out to touch the dying man, taking his soul away from his suffering body.
A few cars away the sudden sense of someone else ready to pass on appeared and the husky quickly hopped over to her. She was an elderly woman, one who had seen a lot in her life, and the stress of the situation was giving her a heart attack. She was hardly physically injured, but he knew it was her time to go. He wagged his tail and gave her cheek a little nuzzle, releasing her soul from her body to join him and the man he had collected as well.
Following the trail of traffic into the city, the Aeterna sniffed at the smoggy air to see where the next soul would be. He followed the trail of a life reaching its end to a man that was being beaten in an alleyway. Bloody and gasping for breath, he lay on the pavement as the group robbed him and left him for dead. The husky felt his ears and tail droop - why did humans do this to each other? Reaching down, he pressed his hand to the man's back, helping to ease his pain and remove his soul at the same time.
Not too far from where the man passed, a tiny mouse scurried along the pavement. The husky looked up in time to see a feral cat pounce on the mouse. Its little shrieks drew the Aeterna over, taking the tiny soul from the mouse as the cat walked away with its prize.
Pausing to sniff the air, the husky decided no one else in this area was ready to pass on yet. He trotted down the alley way, wondering where another good spot to reap might be. It was like a game of fetch! He just didn't know where the ball had been tossed.
It took a while to find someone that was ready to pass, but finally an old street dog crossed the husky's path. He could tell it was looking for a place to die and, after following it for a bit, was there to welcome its soul with happy yips and a wagging tail.
Moving on from the dog, the husky's ears turned to the sound of a distant gunshot. Taking off, he vaulted over dumpsters and parks cars to get to the victim. Not too late! Phew...reaching down, he pressed his hand over the ex-gang leader's eyes and drew his soul to his chest, giving it a loving squeeze.

The Mountains: Soul not found
Deciding some fresh air was in order, the husky headed from the city to the mountains that overlooked it in the distance. Ah...fresh air! But no souls. Hm...maybe he could find a hiker that shouldn't be out this late at night.
Nothing. The husky sighed softly. Ah well...probably should return to the higher population areas. Animals and humans alike seemed to gravitate towards the lights. He bounded off back down the mountain eagerly heading for the road.
