There are 4 main professions in the land of Somnum, the land of dreams. The first two professions are common, and most of the population participate in them. A good 95% of the population are either merchants or guards, as well as other odd jobs. The remaining 5% consist of possibly the two most important jobs in the kingdom of Somnum.
The Gatekeepers were often considered the most important members in the society. Being a realm of dreams, the portals leading to the real world were in much use, but the problem sprouted from the beasts, the Nightmares who would try to make it through as well. It was the Gatekeeper’s job to grant dreams and to keep the Nightmares at bay.
The Thinkers had a much less dangerous job. They were the intellectuals, who studied the portals and the Nightmares. The Thinkers developed new ways to battle the nightmares, to deliver dreams and to otherwise aid the Gatekeepers in their profession.
From childhood, Berial Airaildi had wanted to be a Gatekeeper.
It was a long and arduous process. Berial had to graduate top of his class, then study more and study more. He remembered the moment that he was marked as a Gatekeeper as possibly the best moment of his life. He loved delivering dreams and, though always an optimist, he would never hesitate to stop a Nightmare from plaguing a poor human mind.
He loved his job and all it entitled. Things were going great for Berial, until the Nightmares decided to strike. 4 years after Berial’s induction into the Gatekeeper society, the first Gatekeeper came down with the blight. A disease spread by Nightmares, the blight marked you, slowly took over your body, then mind and finally turned you into a Nightmare, all sanity lost.
It would be an understatement to say that this roused a lot of trouble in Somnum. The Gatekeepers were the most susceptible to the blight, seeing their line of work had them face to face with Nightmares and almost a daily basis. More and more Gatekeepers were turned, countless ones infected. Only a year after the first Gatekeeper was turned, every single keeper was infected with the blight.
Some took it better than most. Despair only fueled the blight’s growth. Berial tried to keep a positive outlook on things. He was still doing what he loved, delivering dreams. The blights progress in him was slower than most. As long as he could still deliver, he was still happy.
Then the Closer was developed. To try to defend against the blight, a group of Thinkers had gotten together and created a machine which could open and close portals, as well as deliver dreams, with little to no maintenance needed. The Closer was installed into a portal to the west of the capitol and after a month of use was deemed a success. They were mass produced and installed in every known portal in the kingdom. The Closer rendered the Gatekeepers obsolete.
The Gatekeepers were no longer needed. They were useless and more off they were dangerous. All of them were infected with the blight to some degree. They were seen as walking infections, and now they had no purpose. The kingdom could think of only one solution. All Gatekeepers were to be exterminated.
It happened swiftly and without warning. The royal guard swarmed the Gatekeepers headquarters. The Gatekeepers, while better trained were outnumbered. It wasn’t long before the stress of the fight caused some with high degree infections to turn. Now Nightmares were charging at both sides, attacking both guard and Gatekeeper alike. Those who did not flee were killed, or worse, they turned.
Berial had been one of the few who had managed to flee. Running from the headquarters, he fled the cities, straying into the vast plains between cities where the nightmares and the portals resided. His blight was spreading with his distress. Looking for a sanctuary he came upon a train station. Rushing onto it, too panicked to notice the lack of people at the station he stumbled onto the train. The doors slid closed behind him. The guard would never follow him here.. He felt a calm overtake him and he slumped over on the seat, the words from intercom echoing dully in his ears.
“Next stop, the Intervalic Underpass Junction..”

Name ~ Berial Airaldi Date of Arrival ~ April 14th, 2006 Gender ~ Male Hair Color ~ Dark Blue Eye Color ~ Blueish Grey Note ~ "We don't need you anymore." Noticable Features ~ Runic symbol on his forehead and the swirled markings on his arm Likes ~ Pretty things, watching the fish swim, snow, exploring, helping people, and nightime Dislikes ~ Being bored, textbooks, loud music, bugs Personality ~ Berial is a very quiet child. He likes to watch things go on in silence and seems very appreciative of his surroundings. He likes to be with people, though at the same time he doens't mind beign alone either. He's a hands on learner, who would rather have an experiment blow up in his face than to have learned by reading it in a book. Other ~ Berial has some moments, when provoked or sometimes entirely random, when he becomes very morbid and snappy. They don't last very long, and it isn;t very often, but they happen all the same.

Erik's house is perched up an a hillside on the outskirts of Durem. The large windows look out onto the city from the modernly decorated living room. A small kitchen is set to the side containing an oven, a microwave and a small counter for eating..
Berial's and Erik's bedrooms are set off to a side and are not particularly large.. Erik's room has a stale feel to it, as if he doesn't use it much, which he doesn't. When he is in it though, it's found littered with nuts and bolts and beakers and magical gems and anything else relating to his current projects.
Berial has yet to decorate his room so it simply contained a small bed and a small dresser.
The largest room in the house can be found if you descend the long staircase into the hillside to find Erik's laboratory. A small shack a short distance from the house is where he conducts all his experiments, which very often fail and fail miserably. He made sure to keep it far from the house in case of fires, explosions, or opening of demonic portals.
