Liira rubbed the back of her neck, turning her face to the sun above. Why she had ever agreed to move to this heat box was beyond her. It was barely mid-morning and it was already sweltering. The place was like a hell on earth. It was hot, it was dry, and it was like slow roasting over a fire. She scowled at her own misfortune to have listened to Tau and his idiocy and turned back to the matter at hand. She had to catch dinner for tonight. And possibly enough to store away so she wouldn’t have to lug around some dead things every day here. No doubt the heat ate through everything to the point of stinking before she would even be able to make it home.

Liira sighed and thought about all the extra mouths she was feeding now. Before she was hunting for furs, now she was hunting to feed not only herself, but Tau, his mother, and his little brother. She somehow started to think that she was getting the short end of this deal and this relationship. How she even got up enough emotion to care for the idiot was beyond her.

She clenched the bow in her hand and continued to pad through the soft sand underfoot. There wasn’t any cover, not that there was in Zena either, but at least in Zena it was cold. Who wanted or needed cover when it was below freezing outside and the only things to catch are a cold or a sermal? And sermals weren’t exactly what you wanted to run into.

Liira hopped over an outcropping of rock and rubbed away the sweat already forming on her forehead. She had already ditched her coat and boots, instead opting for thin shoes and her shirts, but even that was too much here. She needed to rethink her gear. This obviously wasn’t working. It didn’t take her long to realize that she would need to completely redo her entire look if things were going to be bearable. She huffed and stopped in her tracks. Resting under one scraggly twisted tree and put down her pack and weapon. She pulled the long sleeved shirt over her head and shoved it with a growl into her bag, leaving her cinch and a camisole on her body. She looked down at her pants and with a sigh rolled up the legs to knee length, giving her calves some much needed relief.

She was about to pick her things back up again when her bangs fell in her face and with another huff and a string of curses, went about tying her hair up into a French braid. It was something her mother used to do for her when she was younger, but she had quickly outgrown that style. Looks like she would have to grow more hair if she were to keep tying it up like this. Now that she was cooled down… though thoroughly pissed off, she hoisted her gear off of the sand, brushed off the bottoms and slung the pack and weapon back onto her shoulders. She felt naked and surly, but at least she was cooler. She puffed a piece of her bangs out of her face and wiggled her nose. Now to get on with this damned hunt so she could get back to Tau and shove his face in the dirt for staying home.

She sulked through the sands, keeping an eye out for any tracks, but of course it was so soft in the ground here that all tracks wiped away almost instantly. Liira pursed her lips and couldn’t help but feel that this place was empty and barren for a reason. She kicked at the damned sand under her feet and was about to turn around and just call it quits when she heard a soft baying. She rounded over the sand mound in front of her and on the other side, chewing on the hard grass patches was a herd of aldabuk. Liira grinned to herself. This would be easy pickings. She could get at least half of them to take home with her, that she was almost sure. She was a clean shot. She pulled her bow off of her shoulder and wrapped her fingers around an arrow from her quiver. Pulling tight she let her eyes scan the group, picking out one of the larger ones, since the first shot would be the most crucial. And scanning to see how many she could possibly take down, or at least injure before they scattered.

She released her arrow and it hit with a thud into the aldabuk. From that point on it was a mad dash to keep things moving smoothly. The arrow sank in, the aldabuk had begun to drop to the floor, and the others all tensed to run at what seemed like the same instant, leaving Liira to reach for as many arrows as she could in the precious seconds left. She loosed three arrows one after the other. Two landed and hit their mark, the third missed and struck sand.

And it was already too late.

The other three in the group had already scattered, long gone from their friends. The three that remained were either dead or dying. The only one still living Lirra pulled out her knife and cleanly finished the job. They were all a good size. And they should be able to feed Liira and Tau’s family for at least two weeks, if the meat even lasted that long here. It was hard to tell with the damned heat and Liira’s recent move. But if all the food was this large and this easy to take down she wasn’t going to complain. But she still needed to figure out how to get all of it home.

She pursed her lips again. Maybe larger game wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. Liira pulled the bow back onto her shoulder and reclaimed her arrows. The one that struck sand had been trampled and crushed, she would need to replace it, but the others were fine. She wiped the blood off of them with a cloth and nestled them back in with the rest of the bunch, throwing the broken one back to the sand.

She pulled the aldabuk as close to each other as she could and pulled out a rope. It was meant to be used for smaller critters, but she hoped it would be steady enough to carry the three aldabuk back. Or at least enough of the way back she could call on Tau to help. She wrapped the rope around each of the aldabuks’ legs and tied the knot. There wasn’t much left to pull, but there was enough. Liira guessed the good thing about the soft sand was that she could pull the aldabuk much easier at least. She tugged on the string to give it a try and with a nod of her head found that while she would be working hard the rest of the way, she would at least be able to do it. She pulled at the rope and started her journey back to Yera.
