IC

It had taken time for Serr's wound to heal after his last encounter with Jyn. She had left him with almost nothing, and had left him bleeding. Serr had sworn to himself that he would get his revenge... and now it seemed like he would have it.

It was still night in Yera, and Serr's plans for revenge were about to become fulfilled.

Quest Tasks
||. The quest should start with Serr's intended plans for revenge and his emotions after his last encounter with Jyn.
||. Serr should return to Jyn's hideout to steal back his things, as well as grabbing some of hers.
||. The quest should continue with Serr confronting Jyn and she should in some way become gravely injured (whether Serr did this or not will not effect the grade of the quest).
||. Serr will be blamed for Jyn's life threatening wound and will be forced to leave Yera (for a while at least).

[ staying in ]

Tomorrow night was the night his life would change forever. Tonight, however, was the last evening he'd spend in this house, this bed, this town. He could have been visiting the people he'd grown to tolerate or dining on a local delicacy he'd never see in the south or lying in the trampled grass gazing up at the stars with a tear in his eye. Instead, Serr was thinking. It was quite unnecessary, disturbing even, yet he couldn't seem to stop.

If he was at all reluctant to finally exact his revenge, it was solely because of his aunt. She had cared for him with barely a complaint for nearly fourteen years, and now when she should have been receiving financial support from her wealthy, grateful, and well-adjusted ward, he was poised to hand her shame and exile instead. But it couldn't be helped. There was no conceivable way he could let Jyn get away with what she had done. Recalling her surprise ambush day after day ate away at the prentice, filling him with more emotion than he had time for. He had to take back what was his, but doing so would spark a cycle of revenge that wouldn't end until either he or Jyn was dead. Fiia would approve if she knew the whole story. He had to keep telling himself that.

Members of the Shifter's gang had been easy enough to find, even when he had been new to sneaking around, but locating one of her actual hideouts was another matter altogether. Serr had taken great pains not to alert her to the fact that he was looking to ambush her, and he was fairly certain he had succeeded. He was going to have to surprise her if he wanted to win.

He thought again about going out. There was no real problem with doing so, he simply felt no desire to commune with Yera one final time. Instead, he spun the ring on his pinky and smirked as he touched the medallion that glinted on a nearby shelf. He would have plenty of time for fun once he was on the road looking for Eziya and Ingwe again.

For now, he needed all the rest he could get.

[ losers, weepers ]

Normally he wouldn't have hidden the fact that he was heading out for an evening stroll, but he didn't want Fiia to have the faintest inkling that anything had gone on tonight beyond what he told her once it was done. It was a terribly manipulative way to behave. It was unfair. He knew that, but it made his actions no less necessary.

Serr brought nothing with him beyond a dagger, the clothing on his back, and a satchel at his hip, trusting the night's shadows to keep him hidden and the element of surprise to keep him safe. He darted from unremarkable corner to vacant ledge to long shadow, ducking past people he had known all of his life, the ones who had turned away when Fiia had taken him in. They deserved the monotony of this corner of Yera, the same old existence day in and day out for as long as they lived. He vowed to be something better than a bread delivery boy, or die trying.

A feral grin quirked his lips as he finally found what he was looking for. Serr sidled up to a very large, if otherwise unremarkable tree, pressing his ear to a crack in its side. Sure enough, a voice emerged soon after. It was easy enough to pick up. Jyn was shouting.

"If you ever use me as cover again, whether I'm disguised or not, I'll haul you to the ocean and drop you off a cliff. You are expendable. You are mine. Without me, you wouldn't have homes. You wouldn't have weapons. And you certainly wouldn't have those smug little smirks tarting up your faces like a couple of highborn Oban virgins! Do you understand me?"

A low affirmative chorus met her words, and Serr barely had a moment's warning before the tree split in front of him and a pair of disgruntled thieves hurried out. He scampered around to the far side of the massive trunk, grateful that his fellow miscreants were too miffed by their scolding to notice the displaced dirt at their feet. The prentice breathed another sigh of relief when Jyn followed her fractured crew, shooing the pair forward like a prickly mother hen.

His timing was accidentally impeccable. Revenge was bound to be easier to exact with time alone to prepare. Serr waited until the crack in the tree had nearly sealed before blocking it from closing entirely with the hilt of his dagger. The ones who had left were already long gone, but he waited several silent minutes more just to make sure. Then he stepped inside.

The hideout was well stocked and orderly, its sheer perfection as a base sparking a pang of jealousy in Serr's chest as he looked around. For a moment he panicked when he didn't see any of the spoils of Jyn's heists, but the prentice soon noticed a large wooden chest braced with metal nestled in a dim corner. It seemed the Shifter wasn't one to display her treasures. Interesting.

Serr inched closer, still wary of traps and protective spells, which was why he was so quick to draw his dagger when he heard a faint scuffling nearby. The boy who had produced the sound emerged from the darkness Serr had left behind, hands raised and eyes wide. Another lesson learned. Next time he would check the places he had been more thoroughly.

"Don't hurt me!" the boy stuttered, prompting Serr to raise a finger to his lips and hiss softly. He recognized this kid as one of the ones who had been present at that first job, the one he'd so spectacularly screwed up. He knew now that was exactly what he had done, even if it was galling. No matter how badly he had messed up, he hadn't deserved a stabbing in return.

"I'm not going to if you shut up." Serr kept his dagger raised as he continued his search at a faster clip. "Is anyone else around?" He turned to glare at the kid, hoping his tone hammered home an unspoken threat. If there was anyone here and they managed to hurt Serr, he would exact the same punishment on the boy who had lied.

"No! Jyn took Oran and Dases out to hit a trade caravan coming in from the south. They won't be gone long, but you should have plenty of time to take what you came for."

Serr dropped his glare, reluctantly sheathing his blade. He didn't want to let down his guard, but he needed both hands to search the chest. Even though the boy inched forward as he lifted the silent lid, Serr didn't threaten him further. He only had eyes for his steel mask, his handful of shiny stones, the hybrid's cuff. They were all here. They were his for the taking.

"D... do you need help?" The boy reached for the mask and Serr slapped his hand away. "S... sorry. I just..." He swallowed and sighed. "I don't want to work for her anymore, Serr."

He froze, his hand halfway between the chest and his bag, surprised anxiety tickling his gut. Sure, Serr had remembered the other Leaf's face easily enough, but this kid had recalled his name and the boy was letting him get away with stealing from someone he was clearly frightened of. He was... helping. Serr wasn't a leader. He didn't want some ragtag troupe of baby thieves hanging from the hems of his pants when he was still so new to this life of crime himself. But surely he could get this kid safely out of town with a minimum of effort? Maybe he could even find him a proper job. Serr shook his head faintly. Maybe that was going a bit too far. It wasn't like he cared.

He turned to face the boy, relaxing his face into an expression he hoped was nonthreatening.

"Okay. You can come with me when I leave Yera, but only if you help me get out of here without getting stabbed again. And tell me your name. That'd be good too."

[ surprise ]

When Jyn returned with Oran and Dases, she was in an even poorer mood than she had been when she'd left. The caravan they had been aiming for was well protected, and the trio came away with little to show for their efforts. Things only got worse when the Shifter saw the state of her hideout. Overturned tables, smashed dishware, food smeared on disguises... they had managed to do a number on the place in an surprisingly brief amount of time.

Thess—which, as it turned out, was the Leaf boy's name—had proven a worthy ally, following Serr's instructions down to the finest detail. He was also quite the little actor, moaning piteously at just the right moment, long enough after Jyn had arrived to distract her from checking the trunk too soon. The one thing Thess hadn't been able to prevent was Serr getting cut up again, but, to be fair, the prentice had done that to himself. Thess was spattered with an impressive amount of blood, not all of it his by any stretch. Serr sucked at a new shallow gash at the base of his thumb and remained quietly hidden, waiting for the verbal signal they'd agreed upon before he made his next move.

"Who did this?" Jyn spat, approaching Thess at a speed that was rather intimidating in such a small space. The boy winced as she managed to prod the only spot on him that sported a legitimate wound, but he recovered quickly, holding up his hands to block her second attempt at hurting him. "Do you understand what I am asking you!?"

"Yes! It... it was that man who was with us when we stole back Pikret's pocketwatch. The one you... the dead one. I don't remember his name. He took some things out of your chest right before he stabbed me and ran outside. If you hurry, you might get him!"

Jyn paused, then gestured sharply at her cronies. "You two! Go! Find Serr."

The prentice filled his darkened hiding spot with restless energy and a toothy grin. Serr had respected Jyn. He still thought she was terribly efficient, organized, and a master at making others underestimate her. But she had hurt him. Humiliated him. That could not stand, no matter how much he admired her. Still... he couldn't help feeling delighted that she had not only recalled his name, but had deemed him dangerous enough to require two of her goons to subdue. Or maybe she simply wanted him beaten to within an inch of his life. Either way, he didn't have much time to ponder her possible feelings.

There was a faint rustling outside the trunk Serr had stashed himself in, a dimming of the light outside the peephole just before Thess shouted,

"Jyn! Wait!"

The signal.

When he thought back to what had happened next, Serr would swear that time had slowed when the boy uttered those words. The prentice pushed open the chest's lid from the inside, all of the nearby air seemingly sucked away in Jyn's gasp. Her eyes were dark hollows, their color hidden in shadow, but he saw the disappointed anger in the lift of her cheeks and the lines on her forehead.

Serr knew what she was thinking. Outmaneuvered by a couple of kids. He might not have been the smartest thief, or the quickest, or the strongest, but he was learning every day. One day he would surpass Jyn. Now she knew it.

The dagger didn't make a sound when he pulled it from the sheath at his side, nor when it pierced the Shifter's skin. She did though, and that was the only reward he needed.

"Stay down," Serr hissed.

Then he and Thess were gone.

[ escape ]

Serr ran toward the stand of trees where he had planned on stashing his loot while he retrieved his aunt, one very unplanned addition to the group trotting gamely behind him. In order to make the robbery look convincing, Serr had slashed Thess across the cheek. He could have cut up the boy's leg and rid himself of an unwanted burden, but, well, Thess wasn't a burden. He was almost a friend.

"That was... so sinister!" he said, bouncing to a halt as the prentice stopped. "Do you think she'll die?"

Serr quirked an eyebrow. And he'd thought he was morbid. "I didn't when she did it to me. She'll be fine. Probably."

"What's this? Where are we going?"

"I have to get my aunt. You'll stay here with the bag."

They were silent as Thess caught his breath. He didn't object.

"Serr?"

"Hm?"

"You know if she lives, you'll be in a lot of trouble?"

"Mmhm. That's why we're going south. To train. Practice. When we get back she won't be able to lay a finger on us."
