The night had now been spent, sitting river-side in the glade. November seldom left her sanctuary, and even more seldom did she seek companionship outside of Grandmother.
She watched, like always, as the stars became tuckered out from sitting so high up in their set points, where they alighted the minuscule space that had been allotted to them. November often wondered if they were jealous of the sun and the moon, and the freedom that they seemed to have, for they had so much more space to stretch and yawn in. Even she felt claustrophobic in the crammed space that she had placed her own soul in - somewhere in her mind she felt every breath she must take had to be small, or she would run out of air; or that every exhale may push too hard on the confines of her self-emposed container, and cause it to burst. If her container so burst, she would probably panic and drown under all her anxieties and feel as if she were being swept under by large, deep blue waves of fear and self-loathing.

Grandmother, who rarely knew how to keep her wandering fingers out of November's mind, caught these thoughts before they could taint the delicate pinks and oranges of daybreak. Grandmother so often caught the poor doe dwelling on her imagined short comings, but so seldom was the old tree able to keep these thoughts from enveloping November's conscientious. The sweet, raspy thoughts of Grandmother washed over the tired mind of the doe, "You know not to worry yourself about these things. You have all the room to breath in the world, just as the stars shine as brightly as they would like. Though, the stars; like you, are humble. They do not wish to boast like the sun and the moon. They keep to themselves because they know they are just as beautiful, without having to shine so bright."

November knew Grandmother was right, but that didn't keep her from feeling misplaced, and lonely. Yes, her distance from others was self-imposed, but that was because all others had been tainted for her by the fear that everyone was an unkind and wicked as those who had so-nearly caused her death. She did not wish to get close to anyone, only to have them rip her apart from the inside out - or in more violent cases, from the outside in.

Knowing the beautiful girl would only talk herself in circles, Grandmother used the wind to sing a lullaby through her leaves - massaging the tired mind with sweet words, telling November to dwell on the sunrise instead of the night - and to watch how daybreak paints everything gold over time.

Fox was always most active at night, because spirits were most restless at that time. The darkness always passed with her singing and luring spirits to their final resting spot. It was a deed that she looked forward to doing every day. When the moon began to show it's face in the sky she found it hard not to wander with a smile on her faces. Her wisps would flare up around her and attract the attention of wandering souls. It was really a beautiful sight to behold, but she didn't share the beauty of it with anyone else. As the moon began to fade in the sky, the spirits whom had spent the night with her would often fade away, taking their chance to move on like they were destined to do. It wasn't a sad parting at all, but some might see it that way.

"Fairwell, happy traveling." Fox spoke as her song came to an end. The sun was rising in the sky and her wisps began to fade away along with those who had been following her. She knew not all of them would have the courage to move on, she would see them the following night, and the night after that, until they could finally make the journey themselves. It was simply her duty. A job she had been given since birth. It had been so long ago.

Her pale eyes looked up toward the sky, the sunrise had painted it a lovely orange-pink color for the time being. Her tails flicked out behind her as she resumed her walk through the forest again. While at night she was a guide, during the day she was free to do whatever she pleased. She could get into whatever mischief she liked, and that often led to her teasing those whom she deemed worthy of her teasing. She had not been planning on running into such a beautiful creature as she came across next.

Her wandering had brought her to a river, not very wide or deep by the looks of it. It might be considered more of a creek. Regardless she wouldn't have to wade through the water, she could easily float across it. On the other side of the river was a doe, but no any ordinary doe. The horns above her head were like that of a beautiful autumn tree. Her interest was mostly certainly peeked. And so, she floated her way across the little river and stopped in front of the doe.

"Do not worry. I only wish to get a little peek." Her eyes took on a glow, some of her power leaking form them in wisps. In the doe she glimpsed not just one beautiful soul, but two. Her breath caught for a second and a flush came to her face. She really couldn't put into words just how beautiful the being in front of her was. She could tell that one of them had been through some tragedies, but it appeared that the other soul had been compensating for that. "It must be hard at time. To share one body as you do. But you two together are like nothing I have ever seen before." Fox bowed deeply before the doe, her eyes had returned to normal by the time she looked up again. "I simply go by Fox, it is impossible for me to put into words just how fateful this meeting is for me. Please allow e to spend some time by your side."

Suddenly, a brighter presence than the rising sun stepped into the little glade. The out-pouring of a new light source drew the nodding-doe's attention.
How startled she was to find that it was another living being! How more startled she was when she realized it was coming towards, and talking to, her!
Oh no. Oh dear. This, she deemed, this was not. good.
Futhermore, she read mischief in it's profile - she had seen mischief before, and before it had never been a pleasant sight. This new development left her so nervous that she was shaking to the core in fear. All she wanted to do was run, but fear betrayed her body and left her frozen.
Who was this new stranger, and why did the new stranger seem so strange? The stranger had asked for a peek, but for what? Or into what? Was she going to be eaten? If so, she hoped it was fast. Any detriment to her being would cause her to crumble, and fall apart anyway.

Grandmother wished she could speak to this newcomer, or at least wished she could hijack this darling girl sometimes - for this girl, while lovely souled, never knew how to handle new situations. Grandmother, at least, could understand that this new being could read energy - and she had been sure that she had seen this creature before, when she was still a great, overbearing Oak.

Finally, the female had....stopped? In front of November, the thing - Fox - had stopped talking, or at least had stopped moving. What was this Fox, thing, asking? Meeting? Fate? She did not think so.
November opened her mouth (her eyes and face looking frightened and confused) to say as much, but nothing but nonsense came out, "I....Who....What.......What?.....I!" The overbearing noise of her heart pounding in her chest prompted her to motion.
Springing like a deer after hearing the first sounds of a hunting party, she lept into the air and ran into the trees. However, it wasn't long before the fear froze her again - maybe 4 or 5 tree lines back from the glade. At least she hoped she had gained some kind of ground.

Fox was fairly used to people being frightened of her when they saw her. Some creatures in the area knew about her through the various rumors that spread around. In some of them she was a beautifully kind soul and in others she came off as fairly dark and mischievous. To be honest, she thought she was a very well balanced being. It was easy to read that the doe was frightened, but Fox had hoped she might just give her a chance. Sadly, the doe bounded away form her.

"No wait, I don't want to harm you!" What to do, what to do. Was this glade her home? Had she just chased the poor doe out of her home? Would she be safe outside of this place? The little glade felt like a safe haven of sorts, like any creature whom rested inside of it could be safe. She had felt a feeling like this before. Nature could often create amazing things, trees were alive after all and cared deeply about all of the creatures that took shelter under them. Would it be safe for her to follow the doe?

"I don't want to chase you either. I might just wait her for you. This is a beautiful glade. The way the river reflects the sun is simply breathtaking." It was true, the whole glade was lovely. She continued to sit where she had been before, but she couldn't just stay still. She took up her singing again, weaving songs about times or old. Of ancient trees, mythical being, and always about her travels. Her voice was lovely and as she sangs her wisps began to dance around her. If it were still night, spirits would be attracted to her. But with the sun out, the remained in hiding.

November want frightened because of Fox as person, or because Fox's demeanor was all together frightening, but rather because it was November's instinct to run when encountering anything and anyone new. Deep, beneath her fear, November felt bad about the affect she must have left on Fox, but instead of taking the chance to reconcile by coming back, her body told her to stay hidden.

"I....I can't come out...I'm staying here." She thought for a bit before taking out more, "until you leave...I'll stay." November felt remorse, but continued to add excuses to her story, "I'm very busy...today. I can't entertain visitors. The...um...the trees need their leaves counted."

Grandmother, somehow, took offense to this. Yes did not need their leaves counted! What a stupid excuse.

To Fox's perspective it really seemed like she had startled that poor doe. She hadn't really expected her to act in such away, but after getting a little glimpse of her soul before she could start to understand her a bit better. So she really wasn't going to return so long as Fox remained there? Well then, she couldn't really just waste her time staying there. She had a feeling going after her probably wouldn't be a good idea either. Perhaps this meeting had been a bit premature.

"Well then. I shall leave you to your business, my lady." With those parting words she silently drifted back across the stream where she had come from. It wasn't a good idea to run someone out of their homes after all. She wasn't just going to leave the doe alone though, she'd keep on visiting until the other girl could come to accept her. How long that would take, who knew, but it was be a fun experience. At least, Fox would enjoy herself anyway.

November watched the canine leave by peeking out from behind one of the grand oak trees that shielded her from view. Oddly, she felt bad about pushing the fox away. Fox hadn't tried to tease her - and so, maybe she hadn't deserved to have been turned into a lonely pariah. However, November still felt that it was safest to keep her distance. It was for the best if she was left alone. Probably, at least.

Slowly, she returned to her spot in the Grove, after waiting a little bit to make sure the female had left.

"Did I really do the right thing?" She thought to Grandmother.

But Grandmother didn't answer.

The day hadn't been a total waste at least. She had met quite an interesting doe after all. She wouldn't be giving up all that easily either She'd keep returning to the grove as long as it took that beautiful soul to get used to her. It was strange to her really, never before had she felt such a strong desire to protect something. Even when she looked into a soul and didn't see any darkness, it didn't usually capture her attention in such as way as this one did. Or really, it would be more appropriate to say two.

At some point she found a place to rest while the sun was out, after all she didn't usually sleep at night. She found herself a cozy pouch with some shade to curl up on and as the sun began to set she went to work again. She took a similar path to the one she had taken the night before, planning to come upon the grove in the morning again.

She began to sing and the wisps danced around her. She could hear the vices of the lost souls. They told her stories and she would often return the favor. She would do anything so that they might feel at peace enough to pass on by the time more came around.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The sun began to rise just in time. She had been following along the river for some time now. Slowly her voice was becoming softer. Souls around her were fading away for the day along with her wisps. Souls tended to be irritated when summoned during the day, so she rarely used her wisps during the day. Just as the sun made it's appearance in the sky she broke through the tree line and on the other side of the river she could see the grove.

"Good morning~" She called from across the river this time. For now she'd remain there and see what sort of reaction the doe had. If it wasn't too terrified she might try to cross again.

The change from night to day was always the quietest time. It was most likely her least favorite time because it was always so quiet. As someone who is always alone, the quiet tends to heighten the fact that when you are alone, you can also be very lonely. To keep the feeling of isolation at bay, November often conversed with birds and other wildlife - like snakes, or sometimes she would peek over the edge of her river and spin tales with the fish that passed by.

On this such morning November had stopped a minnow on it's way to it's home to talk to it about the feeling of the water at this time of year. He had told her how the water was best mid-June because the air was warm, but the water kept it's cool.

However, both November and the fish were spooked at the sound of a new voice as it broke through the serene semi-silence of the grove. The fish, who had bee startled, immediately darted into the air before swiftly breaking off through the currents.

"Oh!" November darted up into a rigid sitting position, her startled face quickly turning in the direction of the visitor. Her posture relaxed by a fraction of a degree at the sight of a familiar figure. Huh....at least she hadn't totally offended the fox...

"Oh." She said again, with a knowing tone - neither a scared or offensive tone, but a knowing and cautious one. This time she did not sprint off - and while her heart was beating at a million pumps per second (and her body told her to run) she decided to maintain a defensive, but stationary, stance.

"I won't talk to you. Leave, please" She said, coolly.

Oops. Fox hadn't exactly meant to startle anyone. She had had no way to know the doe could talk to so many different creatures. The poor fish had probably been worried he might become Fox's breakfast. Not that she didn't eat her fair share of fish, but well she wasn't hungry at the moment anyway. She sat and watched the doe debate over what to do next. Her sudden appearance didn't seem as totally unwelcoming this time as it had the first time.

Still, the doe politely asked her to leave. Fox flashed her a sad look and stood up from where she had sat down before. She took a step toward the river, one paw hovering over it for a second like the meant to cross it anyway. After a brief pause she pulled it back and turned away.

"Have a nice day." Her tails just brushed along the ground as she walked away. Well, she hadn't expected anything to change so soon, but she certainly wasn't used to rejection. Maybe she'd try a different route tomorrow.
