IC

The world was coming upon summer, and in Tale that meant less water and sweltering heat. Yithiron had been in town for a few days straight now, and it was after purchasing some replenished supplies, he was beginning to notice that his bag with food in it would be lifted off his said person not long after. The pickpocket was skilled it seemed and there were many rumors going through the town about how food speficifally was being lifted from people and the stalls themselves. It was on the third day that he caught the pickpocket in the act, perhaps having baited his satchel with a rather obvious large loaf of bread.

It was a young boy of merely twelve, and with a sour look on his face. Dirty and wearing rags barely passible as clothing it was time to give this boy a talking to.

Quest Tasks
||. This quest is meant to make Yithiron think about his code as a thief.
||. The quest should start with Yithiron realizing he's being stolen from and then eventually catching the thief.
||. Yithiron will give him a lecture on his code, but the boy will seem adamant about his own ways and blow Yithiron off.
||. The next day the boy will be back to picking food from other earthlings belongings.
||. Even after confronting the boy again, the boy will tell him his code is stupid and too risky. Expensive things need to be sold and the boy needs food now.
||. Yithiron will find that the boy is stealing to feed his younger siblings and won't stop just because of Yithiron's 'code'.
||. The quest should end with Yithiron's thoughts about the boy and his own code.

Thorn strode through the market heading for some new supplies with lifted currency. Buisness had been good, but he might have to travel soon to prevent suspicion from falling on his form. Especially with all these extra rumors floating around, though all of those mentioned food so he knew it wasn't him, still soon enough they would connect empty pockets with his face, maybe it was time for another disguise...one that could breathe better this time though. Maybe if he headed north, maybe Ime would go with him. Their first date had gone so well, he had a hard time explaining the feelings that were roiling around inside him so he didn’t try. He just relaxed and let himself be happy. He smiled at the vendors and purchased cloth, food, dye, among a few other things, pockets bulging he started to teeter home. It had been three days since the rumors of the food thief started up, Thorn had floated around the marketplace trying to get a lock on who the food theif might be, so far without luck. But this person was risking their own discovery and his, with everyone on such high alert it was starting to become a real pain for him to lift coins. Luckily his catch today had gone well enough, still, he was a thief under threat, he couldn't take that lightly.
A loud crack had him pausing and looking off in the direction of the commotion, what could that have been? Perhaps a fire pit had exploded a rock or something..hmm that wasn’t that common but he had heard that sometimes if you used the wrong kind of rock and a really hot fire that it could sometimes occur. Woe to those who were sitting too close to it when it went. Alas hopefully there was a healer nearby. He had noticed a fruit stall that he hadn’t hit up on his shopping spree, he made a few selections and noticed that the meat and bread he had bought before had magically halved itself in abundance, his jaw dropped for a moment. Someone had robbed the robber! Fancy that! Hmm it seemed that they didn’t have the compunction that he did about stealing food, his coin pouch in the same pocket but anchored inside was intact and he paid for his fruit that way. How odd and it had happened between vendors, probably while he was distracted by that noise...now could the thief have engineered that? No, that would take more coordination and work then an opportunist would need. He packed his fruit to the edge of the square where he could look around better without being too noticeable about it.
Looking around with sharp eyes he noticed a small form trailing crumbs, crumbs that looked like they could be from his bread. He slunk around the stalls and came up right near his new target who was indeed munching on his bread. He creeped up right behind the little raggedy scamp and said “Hey! That was my bread! I had just bought it.”
The small pinched face turned toward him, and he got a bit of a sneer for his trouble. Thorn herded him into a corner where it would have been hard for himself to escape never mind a small scrawny boy. The little punk dared to bare his teeth at him.
“What do you know about it, you don’t look like you needed it, I left your coin so you could just as easily stuff your pockets again.” Thorn detected distinct notes of sullen guilt laced with a sulky determination.
“Look kid, food is essential for life, if you are going to steal, go for the coin, the knicknacks that kind of thing, if people have food on them they obviously need it. Its more morally stable to go after things that are not essential for life, you can’t eat a coin or knickknack after all.” He wasn’t sure if he should expose his own thievery to this boy, who was a bit ..odd looking, but he couldn’t yet put his finger on it besides being rather skinny and nearly bare of clothing. No wonder he had eaten the bread. “It’s well, it’s part of my own approach my father taught me these values and I see their worth, do you understand?”
“No, what I understand is that you are all high and mighty cause you have both food and money, stay out of my business leafy.” The kid scurried off under his legs...being tall now had another disadvantage.

Thorn turned and tried to catch up but soon gave up due to maneuverability issues, the kid was much smaller and had a much better time scurrying through cracks. Thorn thought mournfully of when he used to be able to do that. Now he slogged along like a giant, it was so much harder when you had to remember not to trip over your own feet. He shook his head and laughed. So be it, and he hadn’t even gotten his meat back either, fah, he waved the kid away. He had waisted enough time, he went home and told his father what had happened. Dad wasn’t overly concerned and said that Thorn had done the right thing which allowed his son to relax again. Until that night when thorn dreamed of the little boy mouthing off to him, he woke up with a purpose. His mother watched him knowingly as he disappeared out the door to head back to the market. To be fair they were already out of meat again, but he wanted to see the boy again. His dream had allowed him to figure out that the difference he had seen on the boy was because he was not a pure blooded leaf, but mixed with something else maybe wind or another race. This made him really curious, more so if it had been a full leafling because this called into question a most interesting history. Now how to bait a thief, the kid had stolen bread yesterday, so wouldn’t that work? Thorn covered himself in the clothes that he had dyed last night, as part of his new disguise, this would be what he wore when he was not thieving, this way he would look more like someone from the rogue class. He bought a large fresh loaf of bread and put it in his satchel, making sure a corner stuck out. No self respecting food thief would be able to resist the seed covered delicacy, or so he hoped, it had cost him more than simple bread should. The vendor sure looked smug about the sale, or perhaps Thorn just hadn’t gotten enough sleep last night, dreaming as he was about the little thief.

He took up position on the edge again as that had worked so well last time for observations and waited. He watched so hard he wasn’t sure the little flashes here and there wern’t a bit of a delusion of his. But then finally he caught the actual act of the little boy dipping a hand into a pouch...nice form too. The boy was definitely skilled, Thorn would give him that. Now if only he could creep forward into position. The kid disappeared again and Thorn waited for a bit to give the lad time to stash his prize before maneuvering himself into a likely target place, bread advertising its ripeness for the picking. He went to the fountain for a drink and partway through reached his arm out and caught the tiny questing hand in the act. He chuckled on the inside, eyes twinkling as he let his disguise down far enough that the kid could see who had caught him..again. The boy rolled his eyes but put up with being towed out of the square even playing the part of his child by walking obediently and looking up at him with respect and a bit of adoration when people turned to watch for a moment...then making faces when Thorn was the only one who could see. It made Thorn want to laugh so hard he had to bite his lip. He poked his charge to get him to stop. “Your gonna blow our cover cut it out.” He snickered, while keeping a firm hold on the boy as he didn’t want to lose him after being so close to capture.
Finally they were back in the alcove from the other day, except this time Thorn spread his body out more to prevent escape by the same means as the previous day. “Now you do realize you are botching up my operations now too, rumors have been floating around about you and its getting nigh on impossible for someone my size to make it out there.” Thorn saw that the boy had crossed his arms and was watching him with one eyebrow raised, he was at once adorable and frustrating. “You should start stealing coins and other things, coins are harder to miss then food. Or switch towns perhaps, your coloration means that you could probably hunt around in Sauti too.”
The boys eyes clouded, and he jerked his head to the side, “Coins are fine but I can’t eat em, as you said. Its also hard to get people to think that you haven’t stolen them when you look like I do, and items need to be sold, I don’t have the time, its the food I need. Can’t you see that?” The boy spread he clothes to revail prominent ribs.
“Valid but if you went for the right item, sold it to the right people perhaps in Sauti..”
“Look I need food and I don’t want to go to Sauti, theres bad magic up there. Your methods are dumb, and double my risk if I try it.”
“Bad magic?”
“Yes, now shove off.”
“Nu – uh, you arn’t getting rid of me that easily, you were hard to track down and I ain’t done with you.”
“Yes you are.”
This time Thorn raised an eyebrow at him.
“Look leafy, what is your problem just leave me alone.”
Thorn studied him for a moment. “Fine, here.” He gave the boy the bread, and was greeted with an incredulous look. “Go on take it.” The boy stared at him before walking past where Thorn made room for him. Thorn followed, just out of sight, trailing as close as he dared so he did not loose the spry hybrid. Obviously Sauti was a sore topic, that just made Thorn more sure that he was in fact a hybrid.

The boy headed to a place well covered with blankets, an old broken caravan wagon, forgotten just outside of town in a big mud puddle it was canted over having obviously lost a wheel. The wheel supported a tunnel of blankets and debris which the boy crawled through with practiced ease. Thorn poked around the entrance before deciding he could ..proabably get himself in. He stuck his head through blankets draping his face and once his eyes adjusted he saw the boy splitting the bread into three, and then it became obvious why as a young girl and boy younger then their older brother scurried closer to him for food. Thorn swallowed a gasp moving forward a little which made his shoulders thump on the tilted door..crap there went his cover. Three pairs of light cool colored eyes turned to him.
“Um hi? I think I’m stuck.”
“You snoopy old man.”
“What did you think I didn’t get curious? Its in my blood. Now help me out...please?”
The boy sighed an marshaled his little army to pull Thorn in by his hands. “You are so heavy.”
“Sorry,” Thorn said.
With a thump he landed on the tilted floor and gasped for air since he could breathe better, he used to be alright with small spaces, until he outgrew them, now he was always worried he would get stuck. Now that he was inside he got a good look at the two younger ones, they were only a little better off than their older brother himself. The girl had the blue eyes and light blond hair of the wind with the darker leaf skin, while her brother had the opposite problem, they were obviously twins but definitely not identical.
Thorn sat down and introduced himself, “My name is Yithiron,” he paused...what had made him use his real name instead of Thorn which he chose to tell everyone he met..until now. The three arrayed themselves around him and the little girl offered him her piece of bread and his heart almost broke. “No, no that’s for you, I ate this morning.” He rubbed his stomach, “Very full.”
The girl brought the bread back to her own mouth and took a bite.
Their older brother introduced the twins first, “This is Nkiruka,” he gestured at the girl, “and Nkosana,” he indicated the boy. He formally gestured at himself “and I am Okoro.”
“It is a pleasure to meet all of you. I am sorry I lectured you Okoro, I had no idea that you were supporting your sister and brother, if you ever need help, don’t hesitate to find me. I can afford to help out.”
Okoro looked at him, “Thank you for your offer but we are well off enough.”
“No you are not.” Thorns voice started to ring with authority, that was until the little girl draped herself in his lap. She was freezing, no wonder she wanted to snuggle. Her brother sidled closer and leaned against Thorn with a sigh. Thorn felt something break inside of himself..now what was he going to do? It was probably pride holding their brother back so he stared Okoro down.
“I don’t know what happened here, but of my own violition I offer food, medicine, shelter, anything I can possibly give.”
Okoro met his eyes boldly for a while but they softened when they touched on his siblings trying to suck the warmth out of the leaf man since they were never allowed to leave the wagon. Okoro knew he couldn’t provide for them for forever, what if they got sick? He growled, but nodded. This was something he couldn’t afford to toss away for the sake of refusing help and looking strong. Yithiron seemed to understand, and he was the first person to see his siblings since their mother had passed. He still missed her.
Yithiron’s mouth quirked just a little. Not many would put honor before family and he was happy to see that Okoro wasn’t one of them.
“Very well, next time I come I will bring food and blankets and the like. My parents may check in once in a while, if you ever need a place to stay you can find us outside of town in the bush, we don’t live in the city. Mother will feed you and both she and father will protect you as will I. You are no longer alone.” He peeled the younger children off and patted their brother. “You have done very well so far, but you need not struggle alone, not anymore.”
Thorn went to crawl back out as this little family needed help now. Unfortunately they had to help push him out, that was a bit embarrassing, having younglings pushing on ones feet. He had to do something about that hole. For now though it was a pretty good defense form anything large and hungry getting inside.

As Thorn trekked back home, he thought about how his code did not fit in this situation and he had thought it was infallible. His father had followed it for years therefore it must be the best thing out there, but in this case, it held no water. Was this exception prevalent? He hoped not, he was grateful that he himself was not in such an awkward position he and his family chose to live near the edge of poverty on purpose, they were somewhat nomadic after all and it was silly to carry too many items around when you moved rather often. Thorn shook himself, there was definitely no other option he could live with, the boy could steal food because he needed it drastically but hopefully soon with help he wouldn’t have to. Thorn would bring anything that their family could spare maybe sell a few of his own things to help support the little ones. His parents would understand and no doubt they would aid him too. That was part of what family was, what was important to one could be important to the the others and all three of them had soft hearts under the prickly gems encrusting their bodies.
