The Miltank Cafe

A cozy cafe run by a Miltank and her family. It has a friendly but reasonably quiet atmosphere and it offers all sorts of different drinks and smoothies ranging from simple black coffee to the chocolate shakes that the cafe is known for.
The cafe caters disproportionately to guild members meaning that their doors open with the sun and close well into the night in order to meet the odd schedules and demands of teams who may leave early or return late.

Katherine

Katherine had lied.

Well, not really. She hadn't intended to leave. She didn't really want to. The bruises on her body hadn't healed yet and she hated both how they looked and how they felt. But, as she had thought to herself, she deserved something for making it through that mission and she was only too happy to indulge herself a little bit so she had slipped on a bright orange coat that matched her hair and slipped out into the city streets. It had been a surprise to her to find out that a cafe like this existed in the city, given that such sweet and luxurious things were often at a rarity. The chocolate shake was chill but both sweet and rich. She had to take her time drinking it to keep her head from hurting but she didn't quite mind that. It was nice to savour it slowly even if she didn't quite have a choice in the matter.

She liked it here. It was calm, it was quiet, it was nice.

It was at that point that a shiny baby Swirlix wandered into the cafe, sniffing the air as it looked for something tasty. After a moment it brightened, pinpointing the yummy-smelling item it had looking for and wandering over to it. However, some strange orange creature was already drinking the yummy-thing, and so the baby Fairy-type simply stared longingly at it, stomach growling.

Katherine didn't notice the little Swirlix right away, she simply continued happily drinking her chocolate shake. Even when she did notice the little Swirlix, she wasn't quite sure what to do or what it was that it wanted or what it even was. It was staring at her, that much was clear, but beyond that it simply seemed to stare at her. So she stared back at it and watched it as it watched her. It was only after she realized that it wasn't staring at her at all, but rather her drink, that she realized what it wanted. Normally she might have suggested it get its own but it was cute. And kind of tiny. Maybe it was just a kid?

"Would you like some?"

The Swirlix perked up and nodded, not quite understanding the exact words due to its (very) limited life experience but definitely getting the general idea - the nice creature wanted to share the yummy-thing with him! His tongue lolled out as he hopped onto the table, the baby ball of fluff drooling as he scurried over to the offered milkshake.

Katherine watched as the peculiar little ball of fluff made a rather astounding jump directly up on to the table. It was definitely quite young, she thought. You just didn't get that openly excited unless you were just a kid still... and it was definitely quite excited. You didn't start drooling everywhere unless you were excited which was uh... a little gross, actually. Thankfully the table cloth did a good enough job of keeping it off the table. She hoped she wouldn't get in trouble for it since it would be easy enough to mistake the little ball of fluff for her companion.

Mmm. Whatever. She would deal with it if it happened. Instead, she pushed the drink towards the little fluff as she pushed the thought out of her mind. She lowered her head down to the table in order to put herself at eye level with it. "Where are you from?"

Could it even talk? Was it old enough for that?

The Swirlix immediately started slurping down the milkshake at high speed, apparently immune to ice cream headaches... though that may have been because he was a walking, talking ball of cotton candy. Upon hearing the orange-thing talk to him again, he looked up curiously, then used its tail to point to the door of the cafe... and the fairly obvious trail of drool heading from said doorway to his point of origin. Apparently he'd been drooling the whole way here.

Katherine glanced off in the direction that the Swirlix seemed to be pointing but it didn't quite click at first. Her gaze shifted back and forth from it to the door and back again before she finally noticed the subtle appearance of the drool against the floor. The slight shine of the fluid against the floor was the only thing that truly gave it away and it was only by standing up slightly and noticing the light "move" that he realized what it was. It was as clear as day that it could only have come from whatever it was that was in front of her and, given that it seemed to be an infant, it was probably a good idea for her to do her best to return the little thing. Whoever it belonged to was (hopefully) worried that such a young creature had gone out on its own so it simply made sense to help it back home.

It was with that intent in mind that Katherine quickly purchased another chocolate shake which she held intentionally close to the Swirlix's mouth as she picked it up from behind with both arms. It was quite big for her, being around half her height, but her suspicions quickly proved correct when she lifted it off the table with relative ease. She awkwardly squirmed a bit without letting it down in an effort to "de-fluff" it until she could clearly see over it. "Lets go home, okay?"

The Swirlix made a happy noise of assent... or possibly a burp. Either way, it seemed perfectly content to stay there in Katherine's arms and slurp down the chocolate milkshake it had been given, though that was probably just because the little guy was enjoying his treat too much to go anywhere else. The Fairy-type certainly didn't seem to notice that he was moving.

Cut
Theodore Anastasia Boris

"Table for four. Three bipeds, one quadruped."

Team Cut was led to an appropriate table along with Viper. It was fairly low and it had small, cushioned seats instead of chairs which wasn't entirely uncommon. It was a lot more convenient than trying to get people up to a proper table. There were plenty just like it around the cafe and plenty of people at those tables, but activity was quiet and people were content. The lunch hour rush had passed and aside from a few late-comers, most of the people in the building were quiet, content and already well on their way to finishing their meal and leaving. Team Cut didn't draw any attention at all; they were just another team. For a cafe that was often populated by the guild's workers and teams, they hardly stuck out at all.

Theodore took the complimentary water with both of his leaves and took a short drink before asking the obvious. "So how'd you ******** up?"

Anastasia had been doing the same when he asked the question but she, herself, was clearly shocked. What was Theodore doing?

She was sipping water through a straw when Theodore addressed her. She choked on her drink as she heard what he said. Did he seriously just ask her that? For a few seconds she was speechless, but it was hard to tell because of her coughing. Once she was able to speak again, she cleared her throat, "Me? I don't think I've really done anything wrong," she said, her words highly contradictory to her previous statement. She was rather adamant about it too. Her tone would indicate that she was surprised at the audacity of such an assumption. "I've just tried to lead my team strongly. My partner is.." she trailed off. She had started to call Morty weak, but she couldn't really say that anymore. He had saved her from that Mightyena and Beartic single-handedly.

With a sigh, she started over.
"My partner and I don't see eye to eye on how the team should be run. I originally thought he was weak, but...despite what I thought, he isn't. But don't go telling him I said that, Mortimer doesn't need to think I've gone and turned soft on him." She was silent for a second before she went on again, her tone was much closer to what it had been back on the street instead of the confident one she had used initially after Theodore had posed his question. "I suppose it started after that guild wide job where we'd been asked to help the archaeologists. Something happened during the dig and we had a spat during which I told him to leave the team. Under some...unforeseen circumstances I ended up accepting him back on the team, but now he's told me he's taking over the team and that he wants me gone. Says the new recruit can take my place. I just don't know what to do." The way she made it sound, it seemed more like she was the victim of a mad powerplay within her own team, but of course there were several details that she hadn't yet disclosed.

Theodore Anastasia Boris

Theodore listened. Anastasia did too, or she did the best she could after everything was sorted out. She had to stop coughing, first, since she had taken a bit of water down the wrong pipe in surprise. And then she had to deal with Boris, since the Teddiursa had opted to mimic both Anastasia and Theodore to somewhat disastrous results. His little paws weren't quite dextrous enough to handle something as oddly shaped as a glass and he spilled the water all over himself. Thankfully, the glass didn't break and Anastasia was able to calm him down quickly enough with a gentle touch and a napkin.

Theodore just kept on listening until Viper reached her conclusion. "It sounds a lot like you treated him badly, never apologized and then he turned the tables on you."

Viper's behaviour was, as Theodore had so succinctly put it, the behaviour of someone who had ******** up. She was too transiently angry, too periodically outraged for her to handle someone else's mistake any other way. If it hadn't been her fault she surely would have been screaming and enraged, instead she was remarkably passive and uncertain aside from the brief spurts of rage. She had led the team "strongly" with her partner who she thought was "weak" and she had then been rejected by him.

The idea that she had anything to apologize for didn't sit well with her. The only thing she might be guilty of, as far as she was concerned, was throwing Morty off the team in a fit of rage. Her anger had been justified. Her displeasure with the drill had been justified. She had also felt justified in her decision to not accept a new recruit on the team. What good was a recruit that couldn't do anything? Rose had tried to make herself seem useful by professing her ability to crawl into small spaces. What good was that though? The only thing that was good for, so far as Viper could see, was to hide. Hiding was weak.

Viper sat there quietly, mulling over Theodore's words. She was silent, unsure of what to say. She wasn't sure how long she sat there, her sense of the passage of time was skewed. What seemed like minutes was probably no longer than several seconds. Eventually, she shook the front half of her shell like someone would shake their head.
"I might have been a little rash when I kicked him off the team, but I accepted him back. A lack of an apology still doesn't justify overriding me, the team captain, on a decision like whether or not to accept a recruit," she said finally, trying to justify her actions. "I didn't do anything wrong. A captain has a right to refuse recruits for any reason. A captain also has the right to kick someone off their team, even if it's their partner. I regret that he's letting something like that stand between us and running the team harmoniously, but what I did wasn't wrong."

Menus were brought while Viper talked and Theodore's had barely reached him before he looked at the server and spelled out his order. "Coffee, black. Anything small with honey in it for the kid and a small chocolate shake for the girl. The Shelgon will order in a minute."

Anastasia, apparently, wasn't allowed to order for herself but if that was abnormal she didn't show any signs of it. She simply accepted it.

With the order complete, Theodore looked over to Viper who had since finished speaking and addressed her in the simplest and most thorough way possible. "A captain doesn't have any power until after you have recruits. If 'Mortimer' wants to leave the team, you can't stop him. There's nothing you can do that can stop him from just quitting and finding a new partner. You didn't kick him out, he ditched you."

There was no chain of events in which Viper actually had any power over Mortimer. If the two got in a squabble it became her word against his and that wasn't going to "win" her anything. The guild would just shuffle them both into different teams and be done with it. Even moreso, if the recruit decided to side with Mortimer instead of Viper, then Viper would be the one "kicked off" the team since the other two could just reform without her. The truth was was that a captain only had as much power as their underlings provided them and, from how it sounded, Viper wasn't getting a whole lot of that.
