Did You Hear?
Prompt 1

Solo or RP Format
Can be used toward Solo or RP req

Word spread fast in a place like Tendaji. Surprising when the people were so spread out, but now that there was more traveling it was a growing rumor mill spreading word as fast as earthlings could move. It was little secret that a group of Alkidike were starting to cause problems in Tendaji. The extremist Alkidike felt that it was high time that Jauhar was taken back from the shifters and the alarming growth of others that were settling into their land.

There were growing accounts of ambushing in the jungles of Jauhar, where shifters and other earthlings were being beaten and sacked for their things before being threatened to leave Jauhar… and there was only so much these poor people could take before they fled the scene and packed their bags. What would happen if the Alkidike decided to spread out further than Jauhar and became a threat to all earthlings?

They were still rumors, and nothing could be proved, but many were beginning to cast a disapproving gaze toward the Alkidike and a weary eye to Jauhar’s borders...

“Did you hear what had happened to Awenasa’s nephew?”

“What are those bugs thinking, looting and trying to scare us out of our homes?”

“What about the traders? They’re the ones really suffering.

“They’re going to start something they can’t finish.”

Even in a mixed race settlement like Ast, the whispers of violence circulated from the vendors, from meals to chit chat along the street. Rumors of pillaging and threats were becoming common of the small talk. There was no question in Careele’s mind; this was not simply a rumor that spread among the elders and housewives. No, these extremists were real and these ambushes were ever so slowly becoming commonplace in Jauhar. He was certain he knew just who they were.

It wasn’t often that the Shifter felt so certain about something that there would be a sinking feeling this great in his gut. It nearly made him seem philosophical as he lay on his makeshift hammock, staring at the canopy above. The fungi cast their faint illumination below, leaving him nearly wishing for the darkness. Closing his eyes, he sighed. He didn’t need that stimulus distracting him. It was often that he found himself trying to understand just why these Alkidikes were causing this much chaos, wanting their land back that badly.

How did he end up so certain though? It wasn’t from a traveler that was assaulted, nor was it from experiencing it himself. It came from a little Alkidike he met as a child. Tensu was his first glimpse of the discrimination and hatred towards Shifters. It was not by her own hand, of course, but by her family’s. It had always bothered him that they couldn’t play together more than once a month. They were friends, right? Why should the fact that she had antennae and he had skin that changed colors separate them? It became clearer as they grew and he saw less of her. Her grandmother and her warped ideologies are what kept them apart. To rise above the hatred her grandmother tried to instill in her was a feat in and of itself. She was amazing.

Looking back, it was probably naïve of him to think that things would change for the better between him and Tensu. It obviously was so to think that her grandmother’s hatred would just be limited to Shifters. With the increasing traffic of Earthlings to the forest that they had believed was there, it was surely time that their anger would begin to boil over into attacks.

He wanted things to be different though, to not be limited to seeing his best friend under the full moon’s night. Maybe it was living so close to the Alkidikes, seeing the relationships that bloomed and succeeded without conflict. This land was something to be shared. There was abundance in this land and threatening Earthlings to leave was just unimaginable to him. The creatures of the forest found a way to cohabit the area without wanting the genocide of anyone different.

But if these continued, Jauhar would be finding itself in a very bloody time. The echoes of war still lingered from the past. Did these extremists really want to start something that could possibly destroy the land they desire so? To lose their families in the vain hope of removing the “taint” from the land? Who was to dub him naïve when they were risking their own for a land big enough to share? At this point, there were more than enough Earthlings wondering what color blood the Alkidikes had, hoping to remove the “pests.”

Careele couldn’t sit any longer. Just what was going on? He needed more than just the buzzing of a rumor; he needed to talk to Tensu. She would be the best one to speak to at a time like this. Pushing himself up and onto the nearest branch, he took a glance for Siern. “Come on, Siern. Time to rise and shine.” The radaku flicked his tail at the call, barely curious of what had the Shifter up and about at such an odd time. “Time to see Tensu?” His ears perked, sitting himself up with a canted head and eager to see the Alkidike. Careele wasn’t sure where her village was hidden, but he would find her. It was just the right time to get Siern to do more than sleep; it was the perfect time to find his old friend and settle the circling thoughts that had plagued him since the rumors began.
