Blurp, pop, blurp! went the sauce in the pot. It smelled quite good, if Sherry had to comment on it. Meat and peppers and a whole host of other ingredients she’d bought just for this experiment. Well. It wasn’t really an experiment; she had a recipe. She gave it a stir, then put the lid back on the pot. The recipe had been simple, but it did call for a long, slow simmer. Sherry wasn’t sure if everything needed to cook for hours, but she figured it was a good idea to the instructions.

“Ok,” she said. “Now to finish a bit of clean up and things will be all ready to go.” A glance was spared for the clock. Jake should be showing up soon. She’d told him 6pm, but hadn’t gotten everything started until later than planned. Hopefully he wouldn’t be too hungry.

She also hoped the stew would turn out okay. She’d not cooked it before, and cooking as a whole was something that more or less escaped her. But she was certain she could do this. A simple, spicy stew. She’d not been brave enough to make the rolls from scratch, but she did the ‘brown and serve’ kind. “Can’t forget to preheat the oven for those,” she told herself. It was a tiny oven, but it would do for most anything she ever decided to cook.

But for now, she’d have to content herself with finishing the clean-up of the place. She looked out over the living-room area, since all that really divided the kitchen from the rest of the room was a counter. The living room was clean, all stray shoes and clothing put away. Pillows on the couch, desk chair under the desk. She’d have to finish the reports later, but there were always reports to finish later. The bath had been cleaned and all clothes in her bedroom had been shoved in the closet (though really she was not overly concerned with the appearance of her bedroom). Nope. The living room and the kitchen, however, were important.

And the kitchen was all but clean. Her scarf, flask, and some jewelry sat on the counter, generally out of the way.

“Helpful,” Sherry replied, “but thanks.” She’d been working all day at cleaning things up, and it seemed like she’d actually done it. Not that her rooms were ever a complete mess, but things could get a little spread out.

“I don’t think that’s how that word works.”

Sherry pursed her lips giving it a moment of thought. “Okay. Maybe I do.” The weapon had probably learned the word from the hunter. Maybe. “But either way, things look good. And the food smells good.” Sherry was feeling rather good about this whole endeavor.

“I should change.” Something a little cuter than work clothes would best suit the situation, really. She knew just the skirt-

Her phone buzzed. Quite happily she checked the message, certain it was Jake letting her know he was on his way or something. Her brow furrowed as she read. No, not Jake. Instead it was request for her presence elsewhere. Not for anything that would take long, just a bit of paperwork and such, but it still interfered with her plans. “Oh, bother.” She’d completely forgotten to make sure it was taken care of earlier.

Sherry bit her lip. Well, she wouldn’t be gone long. The stew should be fine on its own, for the most part. With a sigh, Sherry moved to her things on the counter. Uniform was only proper, after all. So she tied on her scarf and picked up her flask. Not that she’d need it… She really wouldn’t, would she? Nope. She set the flask and its holder back on the counter.

The stew was checked one last time before she moved to the door. She didn’t bother locking it. Instead she pulled out her phone.

Text to Jake: Door’s unlocked! Please let yourself in. I had to run a tiny errand, I’ll be back super quick.

She sent another text right after the first.

[A.V.]
Text to Jake: Please stir the stew. Feel free to taste it and add any spice you want. Otherwise just let it cook.

[A.V.]
Text to Jake: See you soon. Love you. <3

Another text would follow a full five minutes later.

[A.V.]
Text to Jake: Dinner will take another hour at least so be sure to help yourself to anything in the kitchen if you want. But not too much.

Jake felt bad Sherry was going through all this effort to make an elaborate dinner for just the two of them, and that she had insisted on doing all the prep work herself. Then again, it was probably for the best, as he certainly didn't trust his culinary skills. The last thing they needed was food poisoning that put them out of commission for who knew how long. Still, being idle most of the day certainly didn't help his nerves. Was he... supposed to bring something? Or... wear something fancy? Heck, it was just dinner with the two of them... in her room... but it was still a "date". Should he dress more formal? Should he bother with his coat?

But-

He sighed.
True, but still...
Jake frowned, and crossed his arms, glancing over at the pile of clothes dumped on his bed, and then at the phone lying next to them. Sitting here and moping wasn't going to get anything done.
He went to the pile, grabbed some shirts, and a pair of slacks and went to the washroom.

By the time he came out, his phone had buzzed a fifth time. Oh shoot, was he late?
He quickly picked up the phone and checked the texts, frowning. She wanted him... to prep the stew?

Jake frowned, and looked down at his clothes. Hell, he even attempted to gel his hair for this. He was WAY too fancy.

He sighed. Might as well let Sherry know he'd be on his way.

There would be no immediate response.

The stew would simmer. Bubbling along, not even aware of it's own existence as it was cooked. The oven would sit, cold, as though waiting to be used. The rolls sat on the counter, next to the flask and a bracelet, waiting to fulfill their destiny and warmed to a nice golden brown color.

Other than the barely there plop! plop! of the simmering deliciousness on the stove, the room was quiet. Waiting.

And all the while Sherry was listening to someone prattle on about some bit of something that really had nothing to do with her. She couldn't be angry, she told herself, it was half her fault for not making sure she'd gotten things taken care of. But she did have plans. Important plans. And food to finish cooking.

[A.V.]
Text to Jake: This might be a minute or two longer than I thought. Please keep an eye on the stew! <3
PostPosted: Fri Apr 17, 2015 10:23 pm

Even with the simmering, the room felt quiet without her, and Jake felt kind of lonely as he stood at the doorway, wondering what he should do.

Right.

He rolled up his sleeves and headed into the kitchen. Stirring the stew wouldn't be TOO hard, right? The ladle was already in the pot, and all he had to do was take it and swish it around. Though she said to taste it and add spices, it already smelled pretty good. A taste couldn't hurt though...

After a bit more stirring, he lifted the ladle, blew on it, and tasted. He pulled away with a surprised look on his face.

It's... spicy.
Not overly spicy, but noticeable, and he couldn't help but smile. Sherry was always spoiling him.

No, I'll probably ruin it.

... well, pepper seemed safe. A little couldn't hurt, right?

Unfortunately, he wasn't exactly acquainted with Sherry's kitchen, and wasn't exactly sure where it was. Cupboards maybe?
There was some sort of flask on the counter, and Jake stared. Were those... runics? He opened it out of curiosity and sniffed, immediately cringing.
Wine?

"...oh."
Setting the flask aside, he picked up the container that looked like pepper, and started some into the stew. A bit wouldn't hurt, right?

At that moment his phone buzzed, startling him, and he ended up dropping the entire pepper bottle into the stew.
"s**t!"
He pulled back from reaction at the splash, hand knocking something off the counter.
Crap, how was he supposed to get that out? Maybe Sherry was coming back right now...

Shoving his other hand into his pocket, he pulled out his phone and frowned.
How long would "a minute or two longer" be? Jake turned back to look at the stew. Surely it was enough time to salvage-

"What is it now-"
He looked down to see some sort of liquid on the floor.
Was it... was it glowing?

Chester didn't need to finish the sentence. He remembered knocking something off the counter, and turning his head slightly, his fear was confirmed.
He had knocked Sherry's flask off the counter, and it was now spilling all over the floor.

Indeed, it was glowing. A rather faint light blue; a color Sherry always thought was rather pretty. It didn't gush forth, the mouth of the flask was small, but it was a steady enough trickle to make a mess. And it was not likely to stop until it was righted. Rigorous testing had led Sherry to believe the flask liked to remain full, refilling itself even as it was emptied. It had been a vial of red wine in it's previous incarnation, and while a bit weaker in smell, taste, and such, it was still wine, though it didn't stain quite so badly. Something Jake would probably be very glad to find out later, as it was probably soaking into the small rug Sherry kept in front of the stove. The rug was the color of cream.

The stew was still bubbling away, since a pepper jar being dropped into it wouldn't hinder the cooking process in any way. Bloop! It had been a new bottle of pepper, full. Sherry had gone shopping especially for this dinner, and a fresh store of spices for the stew were among the many things she bought.

Meanwhile, in another building, Sherry sighed and hit send on her phone.

[A.V.]
Text to Jake: Mind turning the oven on? 350 or 375F, the package of rolls on the counter should tell you.

[A.V.]
Text to Jake: If I'm not back before it beeps that it's hot enough, please put the rolls in. A pan is already in the oven.

Text to Jake: I'm so sorry. I will be home asap. <3

She felt rather bad asking him to help out like she was. She didn't cook often, but she'd really wanted to try tonight.
PostPosted: Sun Apr 26, 2015 7:37 pm

Jake stood there, knowing not exactly what to do. He should... clean this mess up, but... he should also try to get that pepper bottle out of the stew. Crap, which should he do first?
It didn't help that Chester was laughing at this point.

"YOU'RE NOT HELPING. WHAT DO I DO NOW??!"

"Wait... the glass can EXPLODE? That's a thing?!"

"We're alone, it doesn't matter, and that's not important right now."

Jake looked down at the rug he was standing on, which was now starting to turn a light blue colour thanks to the wine. And... hell, was it starting to glow?

He quickly got off the mat and picked it up, frowning as it dripped. Ok, uh, the sink was probably too small and... he should let it soak? What did one even use to get stains out?

Holding it over the sink, he wrung out the excess liquid, and quickly rushed into the bathroom, tossing it into the bathtub. Then he went to check in the cupboards under the sink. Surely there was-
He pulled out a bottle of powder and Lysol. Ajax? These were stain removers, right?

"Don't have time for that. Let's just hope it works."
He dumped nearly half the contents onto the mat and started scrubbing. Once he assumed it was mostly soaked in, he turned on the water, making sure it was warm. Warm water was better for washing, right?
"Alright, one problem dealt with. Now to-"
His phone buzzed, and Jake froze. Oh crap oh crap was she coming back now?
He quickly wiped his hands on a towel and checked.
The... oven?
<...Jake, maybe you shouldn't->]
"It's just rolls, surely I can't mess that up. And by the time I'm done, the mat will probably be clean and good as new."

He pulled out his phone and sent a quick text to Sherry:

GrnGriff
Text to Sherry: Don't worry, take your time. I'll make sure everything's handled.

Now to quickly wrap up this mess and get this over with. He rushed back into the kitchen, only to end up slipping, falling on a wine-soaked floor.
... he totally forgot about that flask.

Luckily Sherry did not have any bleach on hand. So, while the fumes from the bathtub were strong, they were not lethal, probably. The water helped with that, somewhat diluting the cleaning products as it filled the tub. The mat might just survive.

So might the stew, though it had not been stirred in a while. Little simmering bubbles rolled the pepper jar gently back and forth, a little dance well hidden from human eyes.

The rolls sat on the counter, the oven still cold.

And the flask was still trying to keep itself filled, slow and steady. The edges of the slowly growing puddle didn't glow quite as strongly as the middle, but the liquid was still an odd blue. It was creeping slowly towards the kitchen edge.

Jake's phone would buzz again.

[A.V.]
Text to Jake: Thank you! I owe you a great big kiss. <3

Sherry really would have to make this up to him. If she was ever allowed to return. Her stomach grumbled, reminding her that it was indeed dinner time.
PostPosted: Mon Apr 27, 2015 3:02 pm

He felt the buzz, but didn't bother checking. It might have been another instruction he would inevitably fail miserably. Hell, Sherry was going to KILL him when she saw the mess he made. Jake just sighed and stared at the ceiling, feeling the wine soak into his clothes and hair. It couldn't possibly get any worse.

"Why bother? I'm probably going to screw that up too."

Jake groaned. He hated it when Chester was right.

Pushing himself up off the ground, he looked at the counter. Sure enough, there was a package, and he picked it up. Right, first he should turn on the oven. 350 should be fine, right? Did Sherry's text tell him to wait for her to return before putting it in? Well, considering the time he wasted, it was probably best to just put the rolls in now so they'd be done faster. And then there was the pepper bottle, as well as the mat, and-

"What now-"
The sound of running water alerted him to the problem at hand, as well as the smell of cleaning products.
THE BATHTUB OH GOD.
He quickly rushed into the bathroom, splashing about in wet sneakers, and saw that it was overflowing. He hadn't been gone THAT long.

Making his way over, he turned off the tap, noticing that the carpet was blocking the drain. Well, it uh, looked like he sorta mostly got the stain out? Now he just had to figure out how to get rid of all this water.

Bubble, bubble went the stew. The rolls started to warm, maybe even brown. The flask continued in it's futile effort to remain full, and the living room carpet found itself soaking up both wine and chemical laced water (from opposite sides).

Sherry, for her part, was relieved to see things were nearly done. Just one quick stop and then she was home free.

Jake, on the other hand, was not relieved at all. He finally decided to wipe his hands on his pants (they were already wet anyways) and checked his phone. Guilt hit him like a sack of bricks at the previous text which soon dissolved to sheer, outright panic at the most recent.

Think, think, think oh god he had to stall.

GrnGriff
Text to Sherry: Would you mind stopping by my room first? I left something important there, but my hands are a bit tied. Everything is going just fine though, so no worries! I just need a little time to make sure everything is perfect. <3

He might have stumbled over the words several times, hand shaking as he repetitively typed and deleted a word. Heck, he even added that sideways caret and three. That should hopefully tide her over... and buy him some time... maybe...

My dignity.

Jake took a deep breath, and shoved the phone back into his pocket, surveying the damage. Ok, first things first was mop up the water, and then get that pepper bottle out. That didn't seem so hard. Why, things were just fine. All he had to do was calm down and-

CHESTER STOP RUINING THIS FOR ME
No, there was nothing else wrong. He already turned off the sink so there shouldn't be any more water flowing, and he just had to get a bucket and a mop.
... A really BIG bucket and a mop. Surely Sherry had a bucket or something in that sink cupboard and a mop...
Maybe the kitchen?

To his delight, there indeed was a bucket. Maybe he could just... scoop some of the water and pour it down the drain? Heck, he didn't even need a mop! This was a brilliant idea. He was proud of himself.
However, one look into the bathtub reminded him that it was still full, slightly dripping over the edge, and the mat was still clogging the drain. He... totally forgot about the mat.

Rolling up his sleeves, he reached in and pulled the mat up, creating a little water funnel that grew as water went into the drain. Huh, that was kind of neat. Jake couldn't help himself, and poked a finger into the eye of the funnel as it finally broke the surface of the water.

No, I think they were white. Why?

What? No, that's just...

... hm. It did look kinda shiny. Maybe he was just tired.
<... Did you ever pick that flask off the floor?>
... s**t, he knew he was forgetting something.

"But... it should be fine. That flask probably emptied itself and-"
The moment Jake stepped into the kitchen, he noticed one thing. The flask was no longer on the ground. It was floating. And wine was STILL spilling out. Somehow.
OH MY GOD HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE.
He quickly picked up the flask, examining it. Nothing out of the ordinary besides a container with runes and... glowing water, but when he held it upright, he could have sworn he heard little soft swooshing sounds, almost like it was... refilling itself.
Curiousity getting the better of him, Jake started to rummage through the cupboards, pulling out every glasswear and container he could get his hands on. He meticulously continued to fill each one, moving onto the next once it was filled to the brim. Soon the counter was filled with containers of glowing wine, glasses stacked on top of glass as it formed a pyramid, or some very strangely-built wall of shimmering liquid. It was kinda mesmerizing. AND the flask still had wine in it. This was hella neat.

Text to Jake: Ok! What is it I'm looking for?

Sherry was tempted to peek in on her own room before stopping by Jake's, but she knew once she was home she'd not want to leave again. So it made more sense to do all the errands, and then spend a lovely evening having dinner and spending time with her boyfriend.

So, with a smile on her face she let herself into Jake's room, patiently waiting for him to text back with what she was supposed to be finding. In the meantime, Sherry stood there, fighting the urge to straighten things up.

"Hush."
PostPosted: Sun May 03, 2015 8:27 pm

Jake had totally forgotten what he was supposed to do. At the moment, all he was doing was admiring the strange and wonderful shimmering pyramid of glowing liquids in front of him. This was Sherry's runic. It was a epic runic. Super neat. It was too bad he couldn't test it more because he was pretty sure he used all the containers and cups he could find in the kitchen. OUTSIDE the kitchen though...

Shh, shhhhh, look at it, Chester. It's so beautiful...

Jake took a deep breath, and sighed. So wonderful. He could just stand there and-

A wisp of smoke jolted him to his senses, and he blinked. What was he doing?

Something smells like it's burning...

It was then Jake remembered the rolls. He forgot to check on the rolls.
It hadn't even been that long! He even used the toaster oven to make sure he didn't burn them!
Of course, the containers of glowing wine blocked the toaster oven door, so he obviously did the next best thing: maneuver around and pull the plug out. No har-

There was a spark, followed by a popping sound as Jake pulled the plug out with wet hands, the spark startling him to drop the still-hot plug into one of the containers of wine, as well as knock another INTO the oven. It was probably safe to say Sherry was now in need of a new.
"SHOOT I NEED TO GET THE ROLLS OUT."

"Don't worry, I know it's still hot. I'll just use a towel and-"
Said towel was not enough. Tray was still hot. Jake dropped the tray and rolls into the water. Rolls were pretty much burnt and ruined.
"Things couldn't possibly get any-"
The toaster oven burst into flames.

... ok, it didn't, but it might as well have.

Jake pulled out his phone and stared at it for a long, long time.
And then quietly closed it and slipped it back into his pocket.
Just kill him now.

Sherry waited. She wasn't one to pry, and that made waiting difficult. She could help him out by picking a few things up off the floor, in fact she was doing that. Nothing major, and stuff that obviously could share a pile together.

He was taking a long time getting back to her.

Sherry sighed, her stomach grumbled, and she decided it was about time to see if the stew was ready. Maybe a hair too soon, but she was hungry, dang it. And if the rolls were done, well, no need to let them get cold.

So, Sherry, hungry and bored and actually quite excited to be getting this dinner date started, did the most logical thing. She left Jake's room in order to go back to hers.

"Jake," she said, opening the door, "What is it you wanted me to--" Her brain registered a few things at the same time. The carpet had gone squish under her boots. Her nice carpet, that she'd had put in when she'd gotten the rest of the room fancied up. And the kitchen. Cups and glasses were out everywhere. Bowls even. And things just seemed...wrong.

"What happened?" She was moving very quickly toward the kitchen.
PostPosted: Mon May 04, 2015 3:32 pm

In the time that it took Sherry to realize Jake might never text back to clarify and the time she was making her way back to her room, Jake had done absolutely nothing productive. He might have stared at the counter with a mortified expression at what had just transpired in the past hour or so, and how pretty much everything except maybe the stew wasn't ruined. What could he even do now?

He had no idea how much time he had and Sherry could be coming back any moment, but Chester was right. Start small, and work his way up. Tackle a little problems first. Not that... this was considered little but he had to do something.
So he made his way back to the bathroom, wet shoes splashing against the water and wine. The bucket had somehow floated to the hallway, and when he bent down to pick it up, the door opened.

Jake might have stared at Sherry for a moment or two until she started moving into the kitchen. At that point, there were only two things running through Jake's head. Run, or be killed.

He picked the first option. He ran.
Out the door.

"Jake?" Sherry didn't quite believe what she was seeing. There was standing water in her rooms and Jake was- well he was running now. "JAKE! Jake, what?" She followed him as far as her door. "Jake! Are you okay? Come back. Jake!" She could chase him down. She was tempted to chase him. Not a single word, and he'd just run away.

She let out a heavy sigh and closed the door, turning to face her rooms.

She didn't know what had happened. But she had to make sure things didn't get worse, she knew that much. She checked the bathroom first, making sure there was no more water coming in. Then the kitchen again.

Bowls and glasses full of wine. Dammit. "I should know better," she said, picking up the flask. Making sure the cap was on tight she tucked it in her pocket.

There were the rolls, off to the side, against the cupboard. Sherry bent down to scoop them up. Burned and now soaked through, they were mush in her hands. She didn't want to cry. She rather hated crying. But sometimes it just happened, like right there in the puddle of a kitchen as she looked down at the ruined rolls.

He'd obviously tried to cook them. He'd said everything was okay. And somewhere between then and now something had gone wrong.

Sherry put the rolls on the counter, wiped her hands, and then wiped her tears.

The toaster oven was not where it should be, the tray was on the floor. An image of Jake burning himself, badly, rolled through her mind. Armagnac laughed. Sherry pulled out her phone.

[A.V.]
Text to Jake: Are you okay?

"That's all I want to know." It was a lie to herself. She did want to know what happened, how and why things had gone so wrong. But he'd ran away, and Sherry didn't know how she should interpret that. She didn't want to think about it.

Her heart seemed to sink a little more in her chest as she turned off the stove. She didn't even look in the stew pot. It didn't' matter. Her throat grew tight and she swallowed down more tears. She wasn't hungry anymore.

One by one, she picked up the wine filled containers and poured them down the sink. At least she could use one of them to help her scoop the water.

On her way to get out every single towel she owned she opened her windows. Anything to help things dry out.

Buckets and bowls and towels. Everything she needed to try and clean this up. At least mostly. Her carpet was probably ruined.

"Jake you better come back and tell me what happened."

[A.V.]
I'm so sorry she got all sad or something.
