 She had snuck away from the watchful eyes of her parents, and away from the lot of her siblings. She had found a little cove to explore, parts of it had tid bits from the land fallen into the water, what she believed to be a tree laid half into the watery depths.
She nibbled on a leaf and wrinkled her nose, it tasted weird and the texture was odd against her tongue, she spit it out and shook her head as she used her front paws to walk along the submerged part of the tree, feeling the bark under her paws, she giggled, releasing a few bubbles to float to the surface.

 Tengu had come again to the cliff edge above his secluded cove to escape his mother's nonsense. He'd long come to understand that she never meant a word of what she said, but the sting, "You're awful, I hate you, go fall into the ocean!" the sting of that cheery tone and her smile never lessened. It seemed the tree growing from the ill fated spot at the very edge had finally succumbed to the greedy tug of gravity. He didn't care, it had never been good for much in such a place.
"Maybe one day I will fall into the ocean, mother." Tengu spoke into the wind as he was wont to do, dropping dramatically from the cliff edge and gliding down in smooth swooping arcs until he landed lightly in the sand near the fallen tree. Kicking some up, this way and that in any case, letting off some steam, not unlike throwing a tantrum. It was intensely warm down here, with the sun reflecting off the cliff face and the white sands, too warm to keep it up for long and the view of the ocean was simply gorgeous...
"One day I'll fall into the ocean and there, and there..." he continued, building a story in his mind and in his chest as he paced the edge of the water where the waves rushed up to tickle his paws but didn't wet them if he stayed from the smoothed area. "Monsters. Hmm, no too obvious. Creatures, creatures that live in the deep, deep waters will drag me down and eat me. They'll try and eat me but, I'll fight them off! With biting and scratching," here he spun around, long tail sweeping, wings spread. Coming to a stop with his paws apart and his head down, hackles up, "but, oh, but I can't fly with wet wings! The struggle was in vain and I'll sink. Lost forever," and he falls, wings tucked as he rolls in the sand, arm thrown over his eyes with one final. "Bleh," tongue lolling out as if in death.

A shadow gliding over the water caught her attention, she released her hold on the tree as she swam after the shadow before it seemed to disappear onto the shore.
She pondered taking a peek from behind the waves, her father warned her of how dangerous land goers were, but the land was so interesting! Such interesting little bobbles and trinkets came from those on the land, and she simply couldnt keep her curiosity at bay!
She rose to the surface, barely rising up over the surface, enough to expose her ears and eyes as she watched....what was that?!

Tengu lay still for only a handful of seconds, he was preforming for no one but himself, of course, so he had no reason to pause long before launching into the next chapter of his tale. This one included witches.
The warmth of the sand was comfortable, so he didn't get up and continue to act the story out, instead laying on his back, gesturing with his paws to the sky now and then, but more than not shielding his eyes with his arm or his wings, but still ending up rather sun-blind.

 The kit inched closer, letting the waves roll her gently closer to the shore line, what was that...creature? She eyed the odd limbs with what looked to be layers of...seaweed? No, that couldnt be right.
She tried to keep herself hidden, because well she didnt know what part of her fathers warnings were true, and what was meant to just scare her. She blew some bubbles in frustration before her tail gave a smack against the water.

Having rounded out that part of his story with the witches and vampires having an epic and unbelievable fight, Tengu lapsed into silence. As much as he liked telling stories and the sound of his own voice he did on occasion grow bored of it and just liked to listen.
The sound of the surf and the calling sea birds was refreshing, too bad it wouldn't quench his thirst. All the sun and talking, all the ocean stretched out endlessly he rolled to his feet. The sudden sound startled him and he spun around, wings flaring. "Who goes there?" he called, not facing the water, of course, because who would expect an answer to come from the sea.

"Eeeep!" She ducked under the surface, putting a little paw against her face as she shook her head. ~Thats right, just call attention to yourself Siren..~ she thought to herself.
And since she wasn't paying attention, she didnt notice the shift in the current as a larger wave swelled, sending the little kit right onto the shore as it broke. "Oh no!" She squeaked softly, her tail smacking against the wet sand, now this thing was going to get her! She flailed against the shore, trying to pull herself back into the sea but under her weight the wet sand just sunk.

Tengu heard another sound, he was sure it was a voice, he was sure it was coming from behind him. Tucking his wings he rolled and spun around, moving to his feet in a flashy manner. He'd expected another flyer, and as it wasn't often someone sought him out, so he wanted to impress whoever it was.
Instead he was treated to the retreating form of what looked like... half a kit? Half a kit attached to a fish, being washed ashore and trying to escape into the waves again. "Oh, oh my gods!" he stared, sat back on his haunches and rubbed his eyes, looked again. "A-a mermaid? They're-they're real? You're real! I mean of course, you're real-- hey, where are you going?"

Her ears grew back as she realized that he had seen her, she froze and just stared at him, eyes wide and wild as she struggled a little more before giving up, she was scared now.
"P-P-Please don't eat me...whatever you are!" She tried to puff up her chest a bit, "I'm...poisonous!" she lied, she knew it was a lie but she hadn't a clue what else to do. She smacked her tail again, "I'm trying to escape.." She answered his question as she watched him carefully. "And duuuh Im real.." She didnt understand why anyone would think she wasn't.

Tengu didn't move at first, still unsure whether this was some hallucination brought on by too much sun or really real, but she looked pretty real and she sounded pretty real. She even claimed to be real. Could he trust that?
She was just a kit, but poisonous, "Well, of course you are, no way I'd even try and eat you. You're a creature of the deep!" Tengu said in an ominous voice, taking to the air and landing nearer to her now, to get a closer look.
"Don't escape princess mermaid," he implored of her, crouching down, wings tucked and tail flat to the ground, he tucked one paw, as if bowing. Keeping his distance, but not too far either. "Please, this is our first meeting... I'm... a prince. From the kingdom in the sky."

Her muzzle twitched as she fought to keep her serious expression before she giggled. He sounded like her father did when he was telling them scary stories about sea monsters, she watched with surprise as he flew with complete amazement.
Daddy had never told her about creatures of the sky! How did he do that?! She eyed him carefully as he grew closer.
She giggled as he called her a princess mermaid. She grew more relaxed, using her tail now to scoop water and wet herself a bit, "A kingdom in the sky?" She questioned in awe. "What are those things coming out of your shoulders?"

Tengu decided being laughed at by a kit was alright. Being laughed at by adults, or worse ulaya his age was the absolute worst. He decided that he liked that amazed look as well, holding his wings spread out now, sitting sphinx-like with his paws tucked. Like this he was shading himself, if he tilted his wings just so he could shade her as well. It was a shame that tree had fallen, there were no others on this beach.
"Why... they're my wings, of course." he fluttered them a touch, "You see... up, up, up, waaay up above the clouds there's a sprawling city. At the very center is a huge castle, with twisting spires and tall, tall towers. Everything is made of clouds up there too. That's where I come from, my kingdom."

The words he fed her, she ate up like she was starving, she was so curious about the world outside her own, and now there was a world above as well!
"Wings?" She tilted her head, eyeing his wings even more now. "Whats coming out of your wings?" She asked, she'd never heard of wings before. "Oooh that sounds mythical! Are there oceans up there too?" She inched a little closer, she didnt want to miss a word of his world, just wait until her siblings heard about this...or maybe telling them wouldnt be a good idea. She didnt want to get in trouble, but nothing bad had happened.

"Yes, wings." He lowered them and spread them out in different ways, flapping them slowly to push a breeze across her face. At the following question he paused and glanced at his wing, he'd never really thought much about them. Sure they were great, of that there was no doubt. Moulting was kind of a pain, and he'd once broken a feather while it was still growing. That bled a lot and hurt nearly as much... "Well, those are, feathers. They're full of trapped magic."
As the kit inched closer, Tengu sat up straighter, putting on a more regal air as he went on to describe more about it all. "No, we don't have any oceans. That's why I make trips down to this cove often. The ocean is so beautiful..."

Her eyes widened as he spoke of trapped magic in the feathers of his wings, she eyed them even more now. "Trapped magic...How did it get trapped in your...feathers?" She asked curiously, he was just feeding her curiosity and she was eating it up.
She beamed now, the ocean was her home and it was indeed beautiful. "It really is so pretty, and there are so many hidden things and monsters." She nodded her head. "Its dangerous though...the sea is very dangerous."
