Isaac had come to the island with nothing more than the small collection of clothing he owned, Swiffle's old collar, and his fishing gear. There really hadn't been much of a reason to being anything else; in truth, he'd still been really hungover when it'd come time to pack.

That was why he only had three pairs of briefs, two pairs of jeans, and a handful of wrinkled, dirty shirts. The first thing he'd done after setting up his box of a basement room had been laundry, followed by lunch.

After eating, Isaac needed some time to decompress. Everything was still a jumble in his mind, and having Lark twining around his thoughts constantly was going to take some getting used to. Not that he minded, because he didn't. It was just different, and Isaac felt like that was okay.

Gathering up his expensive tackle box and two fishing poles, Isaac set off for the beach. He'd spend the rest of the afternoon fishing. Starting tomorrow he'd work on training - but for now, the ocean tide was calling to him. He got a few funny looks as he set up camp down on the beach, but he didn't really stop to ask why.

After casting his line, Isaac leaned back on his palms and stared up at the sky. He inhaled deeply and dug his fingers into the sand. This. This was all he'd ever need to be happy.

Jogging definitely fixed everything.

Totally untrue, but Abbi pretended it did because that was a better thing to believe than the alternative. Which was mostly that running away from something didn't fix it, but hey, exercise was important and she could deal with her problems later on! Besides, it wasn't as though her friends were knocking down her door in attempt to wrangle her into an emotionally healthy oblivion!
So, she ran. Frequently.
Most notably around the Island along the jogging trails that had formed, but her favorite place was the beach. There was always a nice breeze and, though infested with terrible things, the water was pretty to look at.

So it was that after a long shift in the Infirmary, Abbi donned one of her numerous magical girl themed work out tanks, a pair of shorts, pastel blue jogging shoes, and whatever thigh high stockings she'd been wearing previously. With no preamble (she still hadn't gotten an iPod runic'd yet, what was she waiting for sheesh!) she took to the beach and was content for a while.
That isn't to say she was ever discontent for any portion of her run, it was more than her focus shifted from enjoying the jog to... Curiosity.
There was someone on the beach (totally common), sitting at the water's edge (less common), and they were... Fishing??
In Abbi terms that was considered a shiny because she'd never seen it before and she wanted to know all about it.

"Are you... Is that a fishing pole?" She called out, a good ways from the person in question, having stopped in her tracks to shove her hands onto her hips. Was that a thing people did here?
"What, what, what are you doing." It wasn't a question like it ought to be, just something she said as the teen made her way over. Having never considered the prospect of fishing, mostly given the nasty nature of what usually lurked in the water, Abbi was now insanely curious. Maybe this dude was on a mission to... Or maybe he was doing an experiment for... Um...
She was just going to stand slightly behind him and to one side and wait for an answer... Look very interested and patient too, of course.

Isaac had been daydreaming about nothing in particular when a voice called out to him. He very slowly snapped to attention and rolled his head in the direction of the voice, a huge smile on his face (because that was exactly how he greeted anyone, all smiles).

"Yes, it is. And I am fishing. I have not had any luck yet, but that is not to say that luck will not soon come my way."

In reality, it probably wouldn't; fishing from the beach rarely brought results, but the waves were nice and the reel of line was relaxing. He would probably never really catch anything, but there was something soothingly poetic about going through the motions.

"I am Isaac." His eyes dropped to her shirt and he tilted his head curiously before lifting his gaze to meet hers once more, that smile never leaving his face. "I am very new. What is your name?"

Its the silliest thing, but that large grin startles Abbi enough that she takes a step backwards.
She quickly retracts it because he does look genuine, but to be greeted but such brightness is surprising in the most unusual way. Not at all sure how to feel about this, but all the more interested, the teen bent at the waist to peer at the rod and follow its line out to sea. About to say something about him catching anything, she laughs when the man speaks first and cannot help but smile a bit more at how positive he is. Its ridiculous to be caught off guard by cheery politeness, but here she is.
"With that attitude, anything could happen." A bit of joking caution squeezes into her tone when she speaks next. "Though, be careful with what you catch. The uh, sea critters around here bite more than just bait on a line." Especially when the bait on the shore was much more lively.

Again she is surprised that he introduces himself first, but recovers quickly to clear the distance between them and offer her hand down to him.
"Abbi Killian, Moon, Intermediate. Nice to meetcha, Isaac." She smiles brightly and a bounces on her heels a bit. "Got a last name there, Mr. Seaside Fisher?"

"Evenstad," Isaac chuckled around his smile, watching the redhead curiously. There was something so animated about her, something so honest in the way she responded to him. He took her hand in his and gave a hearty shake.

"It is funny you say as much," Isaac continued, his smile faltering just the slightest. "It was such a beast that drove me to near madness, and so here I am." He lifted his impossibly broad shoulders in a shrug, "I suppose you could say I am not very quick to learn - though in my defense, I was fishing out on the fjord, and water is much deeper there."

He was silent for a moment, that smile of his growing even brighter. "You are a Moon, and I am a Sun. I hear that this is a fine combination."

Finding herself in happy company wasn't unusual, but it was mostly unexpected and because of it Abbi has become a ball of cheer with more intensity than usual. The shake makes her stumble a little, half because of the fact she's bending over, but she only grins her lopsided smile and wobbles back to rights. She gives a nod and files his full name away, compiling a mental document on the man and wondering what other information she could extract today. Not many people were very fond of giving away their favorite color on their first meeting, which was a real shame, but Abbi certainly wasn't going to stop asking.

"Oh?" All too aware of the momentary dimness of his features, the teen lost her own cheeriness. "Th-then... That's why you're here-- But that's so scary-- I mean its good you're ok-- An-and you're gonna fight that's awesome-- But there's totes bad junk in the water-- You gotta be careful-- An-an-and--" Having clenched her fists in her tirade of fretting, the teen only paused when she realized something and dropped her worrying over the curious word he's said.
"Fjord?" It wasn't possible to say "?????" out loud, but Abbi was trying very hard to get it across.

Its impossible to stay worried for long when someone smiles so nicely and Abbi laughs again, flushing for a moment and turning her face to the water to gaze at it while she finishes her laughter.
"Must not be that new if you know that." Which isn't exactly true, but it was more than she had known upon arriving to the Island. With a quick whirl that makes her pigtails puff out for a moment she turns back to him. "Its true though, and lots of people make special pairs. If you ever need some pointers or some help or training or a hand on the battlefield, I'll be your Moon!" She chirps happily and pauses, leaning back a moment to think on it. "Maybe I should make a decree... Dawson calls me Moon Princess, maybe that should be a thing..." At this point she's purely talking to herself and only cuts herself off when the ghost in her head sharply reprimands her.

Isaac had never really experienced anyone fretting over him; he'd lived alone with only his cat's company for quite some time, and Swiffle had never fretted over him - she'd only left half-eaten rats in his bed and one time she had peed in his boots... and another time she had left a hairball in his supper, but she had never fretted.

It was actually nice, Isaac found, and he merely sat there listening to Abbi go on and on with a huge smile on his face. He did not dare to interrupt her until she asked about the fjord he'd talked of.

"Yes, a fjord. It is a deep sort of water surrounded by cliffs. Very good fishing to be found in many of them. They are very beautiful places. You should visit Norway to see one, or many of them. It is a beautiful land."

His voice warmed as he spoke of his homeland, his accent thickening just the slightest. Isaac's laughter was warm when she spun about; it was completely unexpected but just as endearing as the girl herself.

"Moon Princess Abbi," Isaac tested, nodding. "It fits you."

Since fretting comes naturally to the teen, she wheels out of it easily when she is done and promises herself to work her way back around to that particular topic. It seemed rude to ask him about it now, even if he'd volunteered the information before, mostly because they'd just met and pre-Deus pasts felt a very... Involved topic only accessible to high level friends.
Despite the smile, or maybe because of it, Abbi feels she can temper her mild indignation at being told what a fjord is (he can't know she's well read enough to know what most land formations are), and she manages to only let out a small chuckle alongside a raise of hands.
"I know what a fjord is, I didn't know they were necessarily good for fishing, should have guessed but anyways. Norway??" He's been smiling too much for her to get her thoughts in proper order and now she does. Additionally she catches the tonal shift in his voice and that does something to help her figure things out.
"Oh man, are you like... Not from America? Or like, yanno, the continent? That's so cool!" It was also an invitation of Tell All The Things, since Abbi was looking at him mighty expectantly.

If it were possible for people to see the sparkles Abbi always imagined herself surrounded by in these sort of moments, Isaac would probably be blinded given how brightly she felt herself shining.
In a swift motion she plopped down beside him, looping her arms around her knees.
"Can I sit with you? Help you fish and stuff?" He was so nice, she was staying here forever. He hadn't laughed at her calling herself a Moon Princess and he said he liked it even though he was very big and adult looking, he was the best ever.

Isaac did not balk when the questions came; it wasn't very difficult for him to talk about himself. It had always been expected of him when it came to small talk with tourists, and it had never bothered him to do it. He also did not shift away from the girl when she sat next to him. Securing his rod in the sand, he grabbed the second one he'd brought with him on a whim. It did not take him long at all to tie a lure; though his hands were big and scarred and could not manage to whittle wood into recognizable shapes, they were deft and quick when it came to tying fishing line.

He cast the line without rising to his feet and immediately handed the fishing rod off to Abbi. It was an unspoken answer to her question, and as he settled back down, he finally began to speak.

"Yes, Norway. I have never been to America. Is that where this Island is? I learned to speak English from my mother, and practiced it for work. Many Americans come to Norway for the fishing - many come from other places, too, but English is a very friendly language, I think. Not so harsh, like German - or too flowery, like Italian. I know a little of German, Italian and French - but mostly only the words 'fish', 'ship', 'catch', and 'be careful' - and 'food' of course. Norwegian is a nice language, but I think I like English the best."

Isaac shrugged his wide shoulders and grinned over at Abbi.

"And you, Abbi? Where are you from?"

In awed interest, Abbi watched everything he did with wide blue eyes, cataloging it all as best she could. A mumble of "Oh, there are two of them" left her when he pulled out a second fishing rod because she hadn't even bothered to look, but she was quiet and said nothing while he tied the line. She wanted to ask a multitude of questions (why that knot, why not another knot, make a joke about knots, do you know a lot of knots), but she didn't for fear of ruining whatever concentration he was operating under.
Freckled hands took the handed off rod and held it uncertainly for a moment before she tried to emulate the grip he had previously used while she listened.
"Uhh, not really. I think we're off the coast of Florida. Bermuda Triangle area, that's what someone told me once when I asked. But we're close! So you should visit during one of your leave days!"

Not really certain she wanted to catch anything, Abbi kept an occasionally worried glance on her line, unable to keep from reaching up to touch the wire every once in a while to see how it felt. She hadn't ever truly been fishing before and wanted to know everything.
"OH! Oh oh um uh... Aimez-vous le poisson?" That wasn't quite what she wanted to ask, she had intended to ask if he like to fish, but she didn't know enough French for that and had to settle.
"Wow Norway... That's really neat! Your Mom must have known English pretty well, I didn't notice it wasn't your native language at first!" She laughs a little, mostly enjoying that he knows 'be careful' in so many languages, and tilts her head to one side.
"What's 'fish' in Norwegian?" Since he seems to like that so much.

A little noise of surprise leaves her when she is asked after, mostly because she's not used to it. It was easy to keep the topic off herself, and normally she wouldn't mind, but where she was from was so boring!
"I'm from Connecticut. Small town, you've definitely never heard of it. But we had a lot of tourists too! Only not for fishing... Just for the "haunted houses"." When she says 'haunted houses', she quickly situates the pole between her knees so her hands are free to give exaggerated rabbit ear quotes. "Not nearly as cool as Norway. And I bet your tourists were a lot more fun."

Isaac's brows furrowed in concentration as he listened to Abbi speak in French; it was absolutely adorable and he let out a deep laugh.

"I do like fish. And yes, she did. She was not Norwegian, but my father was. I grew up learning both of the languages. It is fisk, which does not sound so different from fish, hmm?"

Isaac shrugged on the topic of his tourists; many of them were rich and spoiled little men who came to fish and take pictures of the large sea cod he caught for them. They paid good money to lay claim to his catches, and Isaac did not mind because work was work and it was good to be paid for what he loved.

"I would like to go to America some day. Fish in the rivers, see the sights. Not the towns or large cities, I think. There are many things that America has that are so strange. For example, did you know that there is a place in America that boasts the largest sisal twine ball? I read this in a book. And another that has the worlds largest teapot. Why, I do not know - but I think, someday, I would like to see all of them. Giant chili cans and rocking chairs that dwarf grown men. I do not understand it, but they are very fascinating things to be proud of."

He was quiet as he adjusted his fishing rod.

"Did your hometown have any large bottles of catsup or enormous rubber stamps? And were the houses really haunted?"

His laughing only makes her beam with pride, once again activating imaginary sparkles.
"Fisk." She tries the word out, purses her lips for a moment and then points at the ocean. "Probably some fisk." Its a joke and she laughs at herself, peeking around one pigtail to see if Isaac approved of her humor too.
The noncommittal shrug is the first she's seen him brush off a subject and its odd, but Abbi doesn't feel it proper to go asking after it. Not when obscure knowledge is talked of next and that being something she rather enjoys.

"The big cities are great though! If you ever wanna go to New York, lemme know. Its my favorite place in the whole world. Well, what I've seen of it so far." When he begins to rattle off unique landmarks Abbi cannot help but grin a little, waiting until he pauses before she leaps in with her own remarks.
"America boasts the largest twine ball a few times. Right now the biggest one is in Kansas, and the teapot is in West Virginia. I've seen that one, actually. It was pretty cool, the rest of the trip was awful." Giant sized versions of regular sized things didn't seem a lot to be proud of, but Abbi wasn't really going to judge other's pride or willingness to view such pride. So she shrugged amiably.
"Well, now that you're here it'll be easier to go see those things. Maybe you should make a list! Take a day off every once in a while and go have some fun!" It was the closest she was going to get to outright warning him that he would need the distraction.

The quiet doesn't bother her and she busies herself with once again touching the line, finding it going a little slack and drifting closer to the shore. She's not sure what that means, but its not concerning to her at the moment.
His question startles her not because of what he asks, but just because she'd expected the silence to go a bit longer. At firsts she laughs, just a little, because talking about her old home is safe, but strange.
"Uh no, sorry. And the houses were... About as haunted as anything ever really is." A mild look of concern furrows her brows and she turns toward the man to explain herself better.
"Stop me if you, yanno, know any of this already but since you're new uh... Ghosts don't really function like... In movies and stuff. At least that's what she--" Abbi pauses to point at her head. "Vivi says. Oh, um Viveca is my weapon. She was a ghost, kind of, and she says that ghosts don't linger in the Human world in one place. She says that... That if a house was supposedly haunted it was more that lots of different Halloween people would bother it." To be honest, she had half forgotten that Isaac was a Hunter too, enjoying not focusing on their jobs for a moment. But now that she remembers, she wonders if he would like her weapon, mostly since it is so much larger than she is.
"So, the short of it? No, no real haunted houses. But the long of it was yeah, they kinda were. And they were such a pain to avoid walking around because look no one else saw the weird shadows in them and only I did and apparently that mad me mega crazy." She huffs and turns back to her line for a moment to pout at it because she was definitely not mega crazy.

"You like your weapon so far?" With her pouting done, she could be curious once more.

Abbi's humor ignited Isaac's own; a low rumble of laughter erupted from him as he glanced over at her. "It is one good thing to come of all this, I suppose - the ability to travel where we like?"

A thoughtful noise escaped him as he ruminated over Abbi's talk of her hometown - but what interested him more was the talk of her weapon.

"She is quiet, and very full of spunk. Her name is Larkspur, but she has ordered me to call her Lark. She is a reaper," Isaac explained, "with the oddest accent I have ever heard in my life. But she is a beautiful sword, and I believe in time we will become a strong team."

He shrugged his broad shoulders and fussed briefly with his fishing rod. "Do you and Viveca get along?"

AyeAvast
PostPosted: Sun Apr 19, 2015 2:40 pm

Thoroughly enjoying herself, the teen moves one hand from the fishing pole to cover her mouth in attempt to keep from laughing too loudly. Thankfully she's able to contain herself and nods excitedly.
"Yup! I've been to lots of places... I went to Chicago, and oh I got drunk in Prague! There's this big, big clock there that charts the stars and planets and its soooo pretty!" There are other places she's been, less fun ones, and she does not mention them.

Quiet but full of spunk? That sounded like a fun combination and Abbi listens patiently to Isaac's explanation. She is curious to see what kind of sword his Lark is, and promises Viveca that they will have to spar at some point. Normally a prideful ghost, Abbi is surprised to find her headmate all the more boastful now. Abbi suspects it has something to do with the fact that the man they are conversing with is fairly large and Viveca was to show just how tall and nasty she is, but neither seem willing to share that information.
"She sounds really interesting! Vivi has a weird accent too, kinda Scottish. She says 'ken' instead of know, isn't that funny?" The ghost does not find it amusing.
"Does she say any words in particular that are weird? Can you imitate her accent?" Maybe Abbi can figure it out!

No one's ever asked if Abbi gets along with her weapon, but she'd never even considered they couldn't get along. It didn't seem an option with someone in your head, but the teen smiles and nods all the same.
"Yup! We're best buddies. She likes to shout at me and sometimes she's growly about stuff, but she likes me and we fight well together!" Which was really what mattered in the end.
"Make sure you have good conversations with Lark! It'll help you two bond faster and become stronger."

Isaac laughed robustly at Abbi's animated speak; he found himself very charmed by the teen.

"Chicago and Prague - and drinking, too, Abbi, it sounds like you have had much fun."

He wanted to travel places, but not big places. Small places; places where he could hear the soft chirp of birds, places where there were more trees than there were people. It was not such a glamorous dream, but then, his never were.

"Ah, she says things such as," he paused and his face squinched up and when he spoke his voice was a horrible rendition of an Australian accent, "'yew ain't nuffin budda big jackin' idiot."
