"Why do you live like this?" Diantha asked her half-brother. It was something she had wondered for some time now, but hadn't had the opportunity to ask. She didn't see much of Dumah. It was partially because she had been a young adult when he was still in the basket. They hadn't been raised together, so had never formed the sort of close connection that siblings often did. The other part of why she didn't see much of Dumah was his living situation itself. He isolated himself away from the rest of the family, away from all other soquili. He lived alone and seemed to like it that way, though she didn't understand why.

Would he think it was rude of her to ask? Had anyone ever asked him this question? As far as she knew, they hadn't. He didn't exactly invite social commentary, after all.

Dumah didn't answer right away. He'd had mixed feelings when he saw Diantha's shadow upon the horizon. She was right in her assumptions. He did keep himself secreted away from others intentionally. He actively sought to be alone, and here she actively sought to give him company. He knew she did it for sentimental and honest reasons, but it was an intrusion nonetheless. He did care about Diantha, but it was in a distant and detached sort of way. He didn't dislike her and did feel some sort of loyalty to her due to their family ties, but that was all. No more, no less.

When he finally did answer, it was with carefully measured words. "I live like this because I prefer it. I am better in my own company than in the company of others." That was putting it very simply, of course. There were many more layers to his actions than that, and more were growing. He had ideas for things he could do out here in solitude...

Diantha snorted at her little brother. His answer basically said nothing at all. It even sounded like he was being deliberately mysterious with her. She eyed him. She herself wasn't exactly skilled with social interactions. She could understand the allure of living somewhere secluded, but even she wanted company sometimes, and definitely liked to be around the people she was closer to. What was different with him?

"What about a familiar? Do you think you'd ever want to bond?" Having a familiar would make him less alone. She herself had never felt the calling to bond with a familiar, though she hoped one day to find a partner.

"No," said Dumah, decisive. "I do not desire to spend time in the company of any creature with a voice." Not to say that he would like to be with a mute companion either. The ones that he felt most comfortable around were those not touched by the spirits. They were the purer souls. Even familiars could be touched by evil in ways that animals could not. He knew that even he was not as untarnished as the animals in the wild.
