Votzhem decided, after the awkwardness with the Gani, to check his snares. Perhaps there, he thought, I'll find prey I can actually take.
This was thought with no embarrassment or fury on his part. Indeed, his fury at his loss against the Gani faded as his injury ceased its immediate pain. He frequently lost. And then he got back up and lost again. And again. One didn't truly lose until one failed to get up, that was his motto, and every downfall left him stronger, better, and wiser than the one before it.
His philosophy was that, eventually he would stop falling. But he was sure he had a ways to go before that.
He came upon a snare he had hidden in the brush. It was empty, but as he inspected it, he could see that it had been damaged as well: something had been caught in it. Something had broken free. He cursed unhappily at the thought that his snare had been inexpertly made – had he gone soft in his time in Jahuar?
He turned abruptly as a shrieking squall arose from behind him, and just barely managed to fend off the pecks of an angry beak. He slashed at it and it dodged back, revealing the beak to be attached to the long body of a brightly colored, arrogant bird. A scorra! They would be very tasty, indeed – a good catch.
Excited – and failing to notice the lacerations on its foot that showed it had been the beast his snare had caught – Votzhem struck at it, hoping to kill it quickly and cleanly. It dodged and riposted with its beak, drawing blood from Votzhem's arm.
”Frost take you!” he snapped at it, attacking again, but this time the bird was wise to him, and skipped easily away, fluttering before speeding off towards the grasslands.
”Not this again!” he cursed, crashing after it, determined to not return empty handed to the settlement...
