You're not coming home until tomorrow morning. Hope you don't have anything important to do tomorrow, because your legs are going to be jelly.

You can wear a hat, jeans, boots.

She hesitated to answer about the shirt. The truth would make him uncomfortable, but the lumberjack look might end up making the bears come for him.

Plaid is okay, but solid colors are better if you have one.

Text to Lady Grace: solid ok gotcha ty ty c u tonight!!

Maebe was treated to several photos because he really wanted to make sure. After all, this was going out with Maebe; he didn't want to ruin her evening by dressing up wrong. (And quite literally he would have gone in hunting gear without help because at least all of the camp matched and that counted right?)

At 8:50 Dawson left for the lighthouse in the settled upon non-torn jeans, non-well worn boots, and a blue button up shirt. Today's accompaniment? A simple red, white, and blue cap. His shirt was tucked in and his jeans were hoisted with a belt, as he tended to get the baggy kind that unfortunately sagged around his a** if he wasn't careful. It made him feel like a school boy again to be honest, but it wasn't so bad. At least she wasn't making him wear a bowtie.

She had never texted the words 'you're fine' so many times in her life.

Dawson was right on time, and earned a lesson in how much Maebe enjoyed being fashionably late, by waiting there for 20 minutes until she finally showed up. Her club attire was a different row of clothing from her normal, day to day pink and fluff, and though she'd worn it several times before, it was a first in front of him. It was a simple black dress tonight, garnished with a giant chain link belt that sat loose against her hips. A similar hoop hung off each ear, all of which matched the fancier than necessary shoes clacking noisily against the hard floor of the portal room. Her hair was some kind of work of art - it took hours to create something that flawless, and it was always worth it. Half up, half down, and jagged edges instead of bouncy curls rested on her shoulder. Maebe understood the key necessities to transitioning from daytime lolita, to nighttime supermodel.

She was whipping on a chest length denim jacket when she saw him, and waved two fingers in his direction. Her smarmy smirk looked like she was expecting a rousing greeting; after all the hard work she put into it, it would have come as no surprise.

In the twenty minutes she took, he grew increasingly afraid that something had happened. He'd debated on and off to drop by her room and knock just to be sure, all while his partner hissed at him for being too jumpy. So at first he was relieved to see Maebe.

Then he actually looked at her, and no amount of her innuendoes had ever made his face burn so quick to date. Dawson might have taken his hat off in reverence if he had remembered how to move.

He gave a low whistle as he looked her over and broke into a wide if nervous smile. "Well, now I real feel underdressed."

"Don't worry." She promised him, reaching up to adjust his collar so that it popped, and smiling with appreciation at the effect. "You could have come wearing a gold encrusted suit, and you'd still be under-dressed beside me. It's taken years to cultivate a look like this. If everybody could do it, I'd be out of business."

She leaned up and kissed his nose, before smacking his cheek lightly with one hand.

"Now stop gawking and get to the portal. The coordinates are already waiting for us. Have you ever been to New York City?" She walked away, flipping the switch cover up and pressing the button to activate their portal.

Mildly confused (popped collars were exactly what Mama had said made him look like "one of those hoodlums") but always happy to follow her lead (even if Maebe did give his cheeks a little smack for some reason, rude), Dawson shook his head and joined her at the portal. "Only time I remember goin' northish fer leave was a lunch with Chance over in Boston one time," he replied. Only afterwards did he feel like uncultured swine. Well, he already did anyway next to Maebe, but the feeling had intensified.

Still, he perked up. New York City. The dazzling Big Apple! "You know a good place, huh?"

Lord, help her. She was about to pop his New York City cherry. She could just imagine the way his face was going to light up when he saw Times Square. He was going to be so happy. And she was going to enjoy it so much.

She wanted a hat more than anything in that moment, to hide her face. It was such a good strategy, that hat. She could have pulled off a hat, with this outfit.

She needed to buy more hats.

"I know many good places." She promised him, immediately doubtful that what she considered good would be anything he'd enjoy. She wanted to change all of her plans to mold them around this. She wanted to take him to the Toys R Us store in her dress and heels and set him free in the Lego Floor. She wanted to be anyone but herself, in that moment.

Because she was taking him out dancing to a club, and she was doing this because it was what she wanted.

"Listen." She paused in front of the portal, before heading in. "If you'd rather not do this. I mean, if you don't want to go clubbing with me. Would you tell me?"

"Hmm? I'll go wherever ya wanna, hun," he told her, trying to quash the impulse to mess with his collar. Dawson made fists in his jean pockets and smiled. "Just know I, uh, didn' do clubbin' much back home. Bar cruisin' a bit, yeah, but not clubbin'. So I might embarrass ya out there, heh."

"I know you will." She murmured, her voice quieting with regret. "But that doesn't mean it's okay for me to drag you through it. You're not going to embarrass me, I just." She was second guessing herself so much lately. She pursed her lips tightly, furrowed her brow in determination, and then turned to lead him through the portal, her words almost unheard as she finished the upsetting thought.

"Don't want to disappoint you."

But New York City - even the back alley they had to portal into - was already bustling with too much life and noise to be ignored. When they stepped through, it was the smell that hit her first. She put her hand over her nose, and gagged at the garbage dump in the alley. She moved quickly, heading for the main road where it was night time but they would never know it. The entire street was filled with people, cars, and lights. So many lights.

Every building was a brightly lit television screen. Advertisements were scrolling non-stop, blurring with movement and excitement. She turned back to the dark alley, waiting for him with eyes that were too delighted, too impatient. She wanted to drink in his expression when it came, and refused to miss a moment of it.

His entry was much the same, albeit with a strange mix of eagerness and hesitation. The smell hit him, and unlike Boston, it hit like a two ton truck. Dawson gagged at the trash invading his nostrils and covered his nose and mouth as Maebe did; the rest, he didn't quite recover from so quickly. The noise, the color, the movement: it was almost a violent barrage of his senses, and he didn't know whether to hide or to swallow it whole.

Instead, he stared at their surroundings with the same reverence he had shown Maebe, stunned into silence. It still hadn't quite hit him that he was actually in New York City, but he felt a smile starting to spread behind his hand nonetheless. "Holy s**t," he whispered as he turned his eyes higher and higher, and the more he did, the smaller and more insignificant he felt. He scooted away from the dumpsters, barely aware of Maebe for a moment as he peeked out from the alleyway and gasped.

Leaning against the wall as if he was hiding from the open streets of vibrant activity, he turned to her with an amazed grin. "Holy s**t, Maebe."

And there was her mistake.

He looked at her, his eyes having just witnessed one of the greatest sights in the world, and she saw so much more than just the reflection of the neon and LED in that look. She saw the innocence of a child, and the awe of a man humbled, all at once. He was opened up to something new and beautiful, and she could tell that he appreciated it more than she ever would have. And then he had to look at her, his eyes still gleaming with the light of Times Square's wonder, and for a second she could believe that someone would look at her like that.

And it was a mistake, of course, one she would pay for dearly later. But at that moment, there was nothing left to do but revel in the stolen attention, grinning as he stared at her with Times Square's eyes.

"Pretty amazing, right?" She breathed out, bouncing on the heels of her feet with joy.

"Really, really f--" watch the language, "friggen amazing!" he stage whispered, barely audible above the NYC din. He found himself laughing a little for no reason in particular, as if pressing to the wall had helped attuned him some to the city's energy; Dawson felt like he was a livewire, hungry for something to do, for something to spend himself on while that wonder was still fresh. He found himself mimicking Maebe for that reason, bouncing on his feet like an overgrown child.

"Rachel Berry n' the others had an apartment here," he stated, as this was an Important Fact Concerning Glee, and he grinned even wider. "Ohhhhhh mannnnnn, this is so cooooooool! Where we off to tonight, Mayb?" Jesus, if this was the city proper, the clubs had to be out of this world.

She thought about it for a moment. She knew Lavo was close by, but it was so rich and fancy and ugh, Dawson would hate it. The nearest underground was four blocks away, which wasn't that bad, but she knew he'd hate it for different reasons. Reasons like hands and bodies grinding everywhere, regardless of who you were or who you came from.

This was such a bad idea.

"I think I know a place." She watched him take in everything, and remembered a time when someone had brought her somewhere that made her feel like she was in Times Square. It was still seedy, in the sense that the room would pack like sardines and drinks were almost always spiked, but she'd never hooked up there, and that meant people had some respect.

There was the plus side of it being absolutely beautiful. She wanted to see Dawson make that face again.

"Fifteen blocks south. We can walk, or we can take the subway. Which would you prefer?" Did she just offer to walk fifteen blocks in heels? To be fair, they were New York blocks. Each one felt like the size of a nickel. "Walking means you get to see more. Subway means you won't be tired when we get there. I am strictly unbiased, it's all up to you."
