The Orderite moved quietly through the snow as she searched for prey until her eyes spotted a lone figure. Perhaps a fellow hunter? Xenosa moved towards the person and when she made it, removed her hood. “Greetings.” She called out, hoping to grab their attention. Perhaps they could hunt together; it would certainly shorten the amount of time she spent out here in the cold. She also could always use the company, Xenosa felt like she’d been seeking a friend recently. It was hard as a noble not to want to watch your back and her husband was no friend.

Snow and ice were not very nice, but such was Aisko. Maeron was setting up camp while Raemos was out to see if he could find something fresh and sustaining for their next meal. They were likely to have a lot of cold, dry rations on their little treasure hunt, and Rae would like to have at least the memory of some variety. Plus, there was Darke, and Raemos was still – even after all these years, eons almost – trying to get on the bonded's good side. Supposing he had one at all. Raemos hadn't had much luck thus far – the cold lands were deader than his desert home. Wetter, though, which was somewhat of a blessing, yet also a curse as the cold followed the wet into anything the water touched. He perked up at the voice, waving at the figure in the distane. “Hallo!” he hailed, moving towards them. Another traveler in this isolated land? Perhaps they had news of the living lands, or of the trail ahead. Perhaps they could help. Perhaps, also, they could harm, but Raemos had confidence in his abilities. “All well?” he called, shading his sockets from the glare of the ice. (201/300)

Too late, she’d hailed an Oblivionite. Xenosa scowled. “Quite fine.” She mumbled moving past him as if she hadn’t seen him. She’d rather freeze then have an Oblivionite at her side. However as she turned, a snow mountain rumbled nearby and Xenosa had to move out of the way as a tail came sailing towards her. They’d stumbled onto a sleeping Aiskala dragon who was now furious because they’d woken it up. Xenosa rolled and took out one of her daggers and a throwing one in the other hand. A little too close for comfort, she didn’t have Keke to save her out here.

Raemos was used to rude treatment by his favorite race, and he ignored her clipped tone, gave her a polite nod, and continued on his patrol – as long as she was no threat to him, and didn't need help, Raemos was happy to let her about his business. And then the snow itself began to move and shudder. He called a wordless warning and drew his weapons – a wand and a sword. He raced over to assist, his magic gathering around him with his run. He gathered the thick shadows in his hand and threw it, the darkness careening towards the dragon's glittering body. It struck, splashing like viscous fluid before reforming itself and pressing against the dragon, clinging to it's shimmering fur, seeking a way to the life force it so hungered for. As he controlled his magic, Raemos maneuvered himself into sword range, in case the choking miasma of his magic did not hold the dragon. Fortunately, the magic seemed to hold it down. It crept along the dragon's body, curling around its neck. The dragon roared, the sound struggling to get past the pressure of the magic as it sent a knifelike series of icicles at its foes. Raemos dodged easily, and the dragon screamed as his magic shoved it down to the ice. Its struggles were to no avail against the semisolid shadows, which made their way to its mouth, and the life force within... (442/300)

At least he was helping, granted she doubted anyone would have turned down a good fight with a dragon. Xenosa’s daggers flew by themselves from years of practice, all she registered was weak spots and the rest her hands did by themselves. She avoided getting hit, wings opening and flying her back and away from the dragon. Now she saw the dark magic that circled the dragon and would certainly kill it from within. Oblivionites, always so nasty. Xenosa flew back to the ground, landing softly. There was no need to injure the dragon further and he seemed to be able to handle it by himself.

Raemos knew his magic was cruel. He hated and needed its cruelty and, this time, he let it do its horrible work. Sometimes, one had to do that with magic – just let it go its own way. In this case, it reduced his chance of injury, and it let him keep his distance from the dragon... That was what he told himself, anyway. It made it more palatable. The shadows slithered into the dragon's open maw, and the beast choked on it as they made their way to its metaphysical core, convulsing as it crushed and devoured its life. Eventually, the magic finished its terrible, dark work and the dragon lay still, dissolving into frost-tinged ash. The shadow magic ebbed away from the dragon's soul – the two that appeared to grace the magescians that had killed it – and, like some horrible,. Polluting, sentient liquid, pooled into Raemos's shadow and was gone. “Well.” he said, sheathing his sword and taking his share of the dragon's soul, “Good day to you, then.” He gave her a polite salute, and walked away, back to his endless patrol...

It was horrible watching the dark magic do its work. It wasn’t natural at all. Xenosa’s face was in a permanent grimace as she watched Raemos. It another time she would have killed him before the dragon, but with the treaty there was no killing. So, she left it at that. She shrugged off his good day and made her own way across the icy tundra.
