Rynga Bel was a handsome stallion, and he knew this. It was difficult to be admired by many and not realize just how wonderful you truly are. Ah, but his youthful days of philandering were over. He had had his fun, and now he wished to settle down with that one special lady. He knew she was out there, he could feel it in his heart. An angel with a voice as pure and musical as the wind, a heart as pure as the driven snow. He merely had to find the lucky damsel. He still smiled and charmed the other ladies, of course. What was the sense in being cruel to the unfortunate when he was still searching for The One. He did, however, make a point not to lead anyone on. He never promised anything he couldn’t provide, and spoke only the truth. Unfortunately, what he saw was the truth, many others saw as blatant flirting. He shook his head as he thought of the many angry suitors and brothers he had had to sweet talk out of pummeling him. Ah, it was hard being this charming and good looking!

Sekkei Wynter stretched her wings lazily before folding them neatly against her sides. She eyed the nearly frozen river thoughtfully. The water was clear and seemed clean enough. She couldn’t detect anything lurking in the depths. It seemed safe enough, and she was thirsty. She sighed softly, realizing that perhaps leaving her family behind wasn’t one of her brighter ideas. Oh, they had seemed useless enough, and the constant rambling on and on about family and love and… ugh… Yes, they had been annoying. She had been eager for her escape. But now that she truly was on her own, she realized that her idiot brothers had been useful in at least one thing. She could always convince them to try stupid, dangerous things first. It had never taken more than a small suggestion, a simple ‘aren’t you thirsty? Oh, look, water,’ to get the buffoons racing to be taste testers for her. It was something her foolish parents never seemed to pick up on.
As she lowered her head cautiously to the nearly frozen water, the cold mare realized that she needed to find herself a companion. Not an equal. She was uncertain such a thing existed. But a… a servant of sorts. A minion if you will. Someone to test the water and food before her, to ensure her safety. Someone to do her bidding.

Spring was in the air, the snow was melting, and the rivers had thawed. It was undeniably Rynga’s favorite time of the year. There was still a chill, hinting that winter wasn’t going to let go without a fight. He paused and smiled to himself when he spotted another reason he loved the spring. A lovely mare cautiously testing the river.
“Well, hello there!” he greeted, cheerfully, with his most charming smile.

Sekkei tensed at the sound of another’s voice. Instinct screamed at her to snap her head up, but she fought the urge and instead raised it slowly. No sign of fear, no sign of uncertainly. She refused to show anything that could even be suspected of weakness. Instead, she took her time in studying the stranger who was smiling so stupidly at her. A slow, almost sly smile curled her own lips. Could this be the answer to her thoughts?
“Hello,” she murmured, playing at demure until she had this stallion’s number.

Rynga’s smile only grew wider and brighter at the mare’s greeting. She was indeed lovely, and so apparently shy! She couldn’t seem to meet his gaze. He wondered, for a moment, if perhaps she should leave her alone. Perhaps it wasn’t shyness that he was witnessing, but rather aloofness. The idea that she didn’t want to speak to him, in all his glory, was quickly dismissed. Of course she was just feeling a bit shy. It was his responsibility to put her at ease. But how to do that? Flirting didn’t seem wise at this point, but at the same time, toning down the charm could backfire also. “Lovely Lady,” he greeted, keeping his tone both soothing and friendly, and trying not to sound at all creepy. “Pray, tell me, are you from these parts?”
If she was a traveler like him, then perhaps she had a companion somewhere nearby. If so, then with that companion present, perhaps she would feel more at ease. It was also possible that she had a mate somewhere nearby. Such a thing would be wise for him to know. He did not step into meadows that belonged to another, nor meadows in which he was not welcomed.

Lovely lady? She fought to keep her smile small and shy rather than allowing it to turn into a smirk. Was he trying to flirt with her? Oh, this was going to be far too easy! Her family wasn’t too far away. She had grown up close enough to this river to be considered a local. But at the same time, her family never ventured this far. It was just barely outside of her mother’s little safe bubble. Pathetic, really, that her mother had found one location and chose to stick to it. Not that having one’s own territory seemed like a bad idea, but that Frost had chosen such a LITTLE plot of land to claim her own. And Jayhk, who had WINGS and could at least claim the skies chose to just stick close to his mate’s side. Disgustingly sweet. Still, the stallion seemed to have responded well to the demure act. She tried channeling her timid mother, resisting the urge to gag as she did so.
“I… I’m a bit of a traveler,” she murmured, ducking her head and peering up at him through her lashes. She hoped the expression would be both shy and flirty at the same time without over doing it. Times like this made her wish her mother wasn’t so insistent on keeping them all isolated. She needed practice on interacting with outsiders.

A traveler! He grinned a bit. “Wonderful!” he chirped, tossing his head. He managed not to take an eager step forward. He didn’t want the mare to feel crowded. “I’m traveling myself. Perhaps you would be so agreeable as to allow me to join your group for a time? I’ve found that journeying with friends, especially new friends, is often more enjoyable!”

Group? What an appealing idea. Having more than one minion to do her bidding seemed like a perfect idea. But she had to start somewhere. He seemed like the sort of fellow who would get all protective over a lone mare. In short, he reminded her of her foolish father. She lifted her head just a bit and tried to look confused. “Group?” she asked, hoping it was the right tone.

The poor thing! She seemed so baffled. Rynga blinked, his smile faltering a bit as he tried to explain away her confusion over such a simple concept. She wasn’t dim. He could see the intelligence lurking deep in those beautiful golden eyes. So what could it be that had thrown her so? Surely she had a group to travel with. A companion at the very least! Such a delicate flower couldn’t be traveling!
“Surely you travel with a herd or a flock,” he voiced his concerns aloud. He hoped he would be wrong. That she would laugh and tell him of course she had a herd. Or flock, he amended silently, with a quick glance toward her wings. He never really understood the difference between a herd of land based soq, a flock of winged soq, and a school of aquatic soq. Or would a group of mers be like a pod of dolphins rather than a school of fish? Regardless, to his mind they were all the same, so why bother with the different terms? But those who used the different terms were quite insistent about them and often sensitive about them. Rynga tried to accommodate, whether he understood it or not. Ah! But his thoughts forced him to digress! He returned them, and his attention, to the darling mare in front of him.

The black and blue mare watched as the stallion’s mind seemed to wander then focused back on her. She swallowed a laugh and looked away, to keep him from seeing her amusement. The idiot was nearly as easy to read as her winged brother. Silverwing had, unfortunately for him, inherited their father’s brains. Which was to say, of course, none at all. How Sekkei turned out so cerebrally blessed. She could only assume that somewhere further in her line was someone of at least moderate intelligence that she could be attributed to. None of that had anything to do with the stallion before her, of course, except that she was a bit more confident on how to handle him.
“I… had a herd,” she answered him, feigning an eagerness to reassure. “Well… maybe not herd, exactly. More like a small family.” It was best, she knew, to stick as close to the truth as possible for the moment. She didn’t know how useful she would be or how long she might desire his services. The more complicated the lies, the less time they lasted. Unless, of course, she was dealing with a true idiot. Which, she acknowledged, could very well be the case.

“A family can be a herd,” he assured her with a gentle smile. Then with a sickening suspicion, he realized she had referred to her family in the past tense. Cautiously, hoping for the best rather than the worst, he asked, “Had?”

Perfect. She could tell by his face and the tentative way he had spoken that single word that he expected some sob story. He’d believe her if she told him that her family had been slaughtered. But she reminded herself to keep things simple. Stick as close to the truth as possible. She ducked her head and murmured sadly, “It’s just me, now.” Technically true, but full of implications. Would he bite?

Just her. Sympathy rose up in his heart and he just barely managed to keep from going to her and offering comfort. While she seemed delicate and forlorn, he could sense a steely pride in her. He doubted she would welcome anything that even remotely resembled pity. No, this mare had clearly been dealt harsh times and the fact that she was still standing was testimony to her strength. Admiration mixed with sympathy, and he bowed his head to her. “I’m sorry for your loss,” he told her, putting as much sincerity into the words as he could. He wanted to ask what had happened. Had they been attacked? Did they fall ill? He doubted they had turned her out. Such a lovely and wonderful mare… surely they had found no fault with her. No, she had probably lost them to a spirit of death.

And another sucker is born, she thought. She waited a moment, already carefully constructing a story to explain what had happened to leave her all alone. She relished the challenge of mixing truth and falsehood. She would tell him all about how she had never quite fit in with her family. How she was the only daughter and as such her parents had such expectations of her. They all did. But she had failed to meet such lofty goals, and had been driven away in shame. If she was careful, she could feed him the tale without telling a single lie. Because she WASN’T like the rest of her family. She was better, smarter, stronger. They HAD had expectations of her. They had expected she would love them as unconditionally as they loved her. She HAD failed to meet their expectations. How could one such as herself ever be expected to care about such inferior beings? And she HAD left in shame. Shame and disgust that she came from such inferior stock. So the story would be completely true, but presented in such a light as to make her a victim.
