There were still the odd whispers here and there, lions looking at them funny. But Warrul had found they were few and far between, mostly lions from very different backgrounds. For the most part, those locally-born... Didn't seem to care. Of course, they had other things they worried about, like hyenas... Not that Warrul was bothered by hyenas in particular. She'd never seen anything of the local pack, either... Were they truly as bad as the locals said? The lioness lounged in the shade of the jutting stone ledge of Pride Rock, contemplating the stance against the hyenas. They were just another predator, after all... "I wonder what makes the hyenas different from leopards, cheetahs, and wild dogs that they're treated any different..."
Near her in a darker spot of shade was her much younger mate, Bluu'kirembo. Today was not a day he wanted to be in the sun... While his thick coat had thinned considerably and was mostly just long and fluffy, it did still get intensely warm for him. As he lay on his back, eyes closed, the male gave an impassive shrug. "The smell, perhaps? I heard they smell something awful..." He'd also heard they had no qualms eating rotting flesh, from food a few days old. "I've also heard they're ruthless..." Opening his eyes, he rolled over onto his stomach. "But that doesn't sound unusual... I mean, aren't ALL predators capable of being ruthless when they hunt?"
The lioness nodded. "They are, yes..." She let out a chuckle. "I suppose the unusual isn't so unusual..." She then looked at her mate. "Is there even such a thing AS truly unusual?"

The attention that came with being a Guardian was nothing that Calypso couldn't handle. It was a demanding position, and those of her personal troops made it easier by helping her to train new soldiers. Though, it wasn't her occupation that gave her the most attention; rather, it was the relationship she kept with the lioness at her side.
Her previous mate had wandered off; most assumed that Scout Akairo had been taken by hyenas because of his efforts against them in the last war. It was a disturbing thought for Caly. She still love the male greatly, but it had been years and she no longer held any illusion that he was going to return to her. Things had been fine then; no one paid her much attention, which was fine by her and it allowed her more freedom to work, but now there were whispers.
Hecate bumped her shoulder into her girlfriend's with a stern frown. "What have I told you about worrying? We're getting older by the day, you don't have to help it along by frowning so much. Just look at those wrinkles." She gestured to the furrows in Caly's brow, and gave a mock sigh.
She was the petite figure to her mate's larger form. Caly was big, just like Hecate liked them, the size of a Firekin even with scars all over her. It made Hecate feel like a little cub, even if she was fully grown, but the two knew better; she was a Queen in her own right and Caly was the kingdom she wanted to protect. Her dear, sweet Caly. "Do you hear that? I don't think this little patrol of yours is going to be very quiet today, love."
Craning her head, Caly indeed see that they were approaching a pair on their way to the border. A rather...interesting pair. Perhaps a grandmother and grandson? "We should give them space, then." She had no desire to intrude on a day's rest, but her lover had other ideas.
"Did I hear you say unusual? I would argue that everyone in this pride is unusual." Hecate called out with a sweet little laugh. "I hope you don't mind the intrusion; I rarely get to speak to others unless I'm working, so we thought we'd just stop by." She made a point of it so Caly couldn't back out of it.

Ah, company! It made Warrul smile broadly and with all the sun of the land they lived in. Any company was very welcome to her, after living most of her life with little variation in the company she had. "Oh, we don't mind at all! We both revel in having company!" She sat up, stretching and popping her back in a few places with a pleased sound. Then she returned her smile to the tan lioness. "I suppose that means everybody here is usual, then, if everybody's unusual!" She then frowned a bit. "Though some things appear to be more unusual than others..." She motioned to Bluu. "We still hear whispers about our relationship now and then... I bet nobody'd think twice if I was male and he was female!"
Bluu waved to the lionesses. Hecate he could recognize on sight, even if he'd never spoken directly to her. After all, she had a very distinguishing neck and chest marking. Calypso, though... Gold lions with similar markings to hers, he often mistook for each other. He didn't sit up like Warrul had, though, and continued to lay in his deep shade. "I find it horribly skewed that lions have no problems with an older male who has a much younger mate, but they have problems with the reverse... It's like they don't think a young male would be quiet enough for an older lioness!"

"Oh good, good!" Hecate cheered, and responded to Warrul's smile in kind. This was such a nice little surprise visit. Maybe she should make Calypso take her out on patrols more often. "An unusually usual gathering, wouldn't you say?" She grinned.
Oh, so they - Oh. Calypso's eyes widened and she gave another look at the two. How had she missed the obvious love between then? Maybe she had just seen it, but her mind tried to reason it into something else. Mentally wincing, she looked to her mate. Wasn't that what others did to them?
Snorting, Hecate rolled her eyes. "Typical. It's all about 'natural order' and such. Males can reproduce well up into their years, but as soon as a female gets a grey hair she's done for." She motioned to Calypso. "It's the same for us. It drives gossipers wild trying to figure out who is the male and how wer'e going to have cubs. I mean honestly, how else do females have cubs? They just-"
"Hecate, please." Calypso placed her paw on top of Hecate's to end the personal tirade she was sure would start. When her mate had the grace to look sheepish, she gave her a soft smile. "If it's not typical, they think it strange, and thus worthy of scorn. It's a unnaturally natural reaction." There was something about this train of thought that was almost playful with it's word play.
"It's odd that others would condemn love and breed hate.
"So, you two, huh?" Hecate motioned between the two and smiled. "You're adorable is what you are. I just want to pinch your cheeks and swath you in flowers." Caly's snort make her grin. "What, it's true? Love is cute. You're cute too when you stumble around with your words."
Looking to Bluu, Hecate raised her brow, "Well, can you keep quiet enough around her? Do you give her enough time to nap or whatever the stereotypical thing is for an older woman? Or is it that you treat her like an equal and actually ask her what she wants instead of just assuming? Gossips can be real assholes."
