A few days after his movie night with Otto, the boy in question would receive a text message:

Text to Otto:

Hey - so are you still up for helping me to learn how to swim if I help you with some cooking? (:

Text to Chance:

Sure thing. Come on up and I'll take you

Otto got his swimming trunks on, and slid into an oversized hoodie overtop. Tropical islands didn't require hoodies of course, but Otto just loved to wear them. He packed a light duffle bag with towels and boogie boards. He figured they could cook when they got back. He'd be hungry by then.

He waited outside his door for Chance, intending to lead the man to the pool once he got there.

He wasn't sure what to wear, and he certainly didn't have any swim trunks himself; so Chance settled for just a pair of gym shorts he usually reserved for sleeping in when it was hot out, along with a teeshirt that sported (as usual) several stars across it. At the last second he thought it best to get a towel of his own and slung it over his shoulder before padding out of the room and up to the second floor.

Otto was already out in the hallway; Chance lifted a hand in greeting, a smile on his face.

"Hey," he said cheerfully. "Thanks for this, I really appreciate it."

Otto waved back; his usual sullen expression painted on his face. It was the default setting and didn't specifically represent any emotion he might have held.

"No problem. Less drownin', the better. LIke I said; best I can do is teach you to tread water. But that'll be enough." He hoped.

Otto led the man back out of the dorm building, taking the long trek towards the full hunter pool. It was just a nicer, better kept pool in all. "There's probably better teachers for swimin'. I just don't know any."

Chance took the expression with a reasonable grain of salt, having started to come to the conclusion that it was just simply the way that Otto's face looked most of the time.

"Treading water is better than just sinking," said Chance lightly, falling into step beside Otto and smiling. He had no idea where the pool even was, and had to rely solely on his companion in order to not get lost. "And that may be that there are supposedly better teachers; but I trust you, so I think I'd prefer you anyway."

"Well.. hopefully I manage." He murmured. He didn't really like teaching, but this would be of mutual benefit. "I promise not to let you drown. Unless you get grabby, then you're on your own."

He was joking.

Hopefully.

A snort of laughter escaped him.

"Gee, thanks, teach," Chance deadpanned, but he was smirking, turning to look at Otto as they walked. "I'll make sure to be good and keep my hands to myself, drowning sounds like a huge amount of effort that I'm totally not willing to expend."

"We'll practice in the shallow end. That way if you panic all you gotta do is stand up." He paused, looking up at Chance and squinting. "My version of the deep end might actually be a bit different than yours, though..." The man was all leg. Lucky b*****d. Otto's head would be submerged and Chance would be breathing easy.

He'd forgotten about the height difference. Chance just smiled benignly at Otto.

"I'm only a few inches taller," he said with a laugh. "Hopefully that won't make too much of a difference, especially since you know how to tread water and I don't, so being in the shallow end sounds like a much better option to start off with."

"I think you'll do fine." Otto murmured.

The trek was long. A work out all it's own. The pool itself, when they finally got there, was crisp, clean and inviting. Otto dropped his bag beside the pool, pulling off his shirt and shoes before jumping right on in. There was of course no need to jump. But that was way more fun.

By the time they got to the pool, Chance was very ready to get in, regardless of swimming ability. He glanced around with interest at the large size of the pool - and then promptly laughed aloud when Otto showed no hesitation in leaping straight in, water splashing over the side. Chance dropped his towel down a good distance away from the edge and kicked off his own shoes, tugging off his own shirt before padding over to the pool. There were a myriad of tattoos across his torso and back, as well as his arm; but just beneath the constellation on his right ribs, small, circular burn marks could be made out.

Chance sat down on the side and slid his legs into the water experimentally, enjoying the feel of it before he slipped entirely in. It came up to about his waist, and he ran his hands through it with a look that was more befitting a little kid than a full grown adult.

"This feels nice," he said happily.

Of course, Otto had his own tattoos. Mostly to cover up scars he wished he didn't have. Scars were a constant on Deus. And Otto hated having them. They made him feel tainted, and worn. A simpler life he would no longer have.

"Real nice." Otto replied back, running his hands through his wet hair; slicking it back. "I was so focused on the lesson I forgot how nice it is to just be in a pool."

Otto flopped backward, the water making a clapping sound. He floated there a minute or so, letting himself just enjoy the water and it's cold embrace. It gave Chance a while to accustom himself to the water himself.

"Okay.." He grunted, standing once more and wading toward Chance. "Gimme yer hands."

The few minutes he had to accustom himself to the water were pleasant and relaxing. Chance's eyes traveled along the tattoos at the back of Otto's neck and torso with curiosity, but he didn't ask, instead just wading towards him with a small smile on his face, the water pulling against him and making his limbs feel heavier than normal.

"The water feels good," he said with a laugh, and reached out, sliding his wet hands into Otto's.

"Okay, teacher," said Chance grandly, standing up straight. "Teach me things."

Otto kept a firm grip of his arms, staring him dead in the eyes. "Okay. Let yerself sink a bit. Don't stand. You ever ride a bike? Move your legs like that, n' don't worry about sinking."

"I hate to tell you this," said Chance, the corners of his lips twitching slightly, as though attempting to hide a smile." But I don't know how to ride a bike either. I think I know the gist of it, though," he added, just in case this helped at all (it probably wouldn't).

He did as instructed, however, slowly moving his legs back and forth to try and see how that felt. The whole "not standing" part was slightly disconcerting, however, and as soon as Chance felt himself begin to sink, he gave a little gasp of surprise, dragging himself vertical again, clutching Otto's hands for dear life.

Otto was given a somewhat sheepish look.

"Sorry," said Chance. "This is harder than it looks."
