The woods were different and yet similar to the ones in the lands of the Imladris, they were not quite as ancient and they did not know him. They had not felt his caring touch as he treated them for blight or any other sickness they may have picked up during their long years. Just before he left the Imladris to travel with his mother and see the world, his Aunt Miriel had begun to teach him about the healing art. It was fascinating and the tiny foal hoped that while on his journey he would be able to learn more and when he returned home, be a healer in his own right.

Cenuvaihen blinked his many eyes, having so many allowed him to see detail in the world and it also made his night vision better than that of his siblings. At night he could not see the colors of the objects in front of him, they were black and grey images that are there and yet not fully there; Apparitions of the night in a sense.

He had been blessed by the Eye, while soquili normally were born with two eyes, Cen was born with eight. Two on his shoulders, two on his wings, two on his head wings, and two where eyes are supposed to be; he was sure that he was quite a shock to his parents, but then again his sisters were Blessed by the All Hallow’s Spirit as well, just in a different fashion than his own.

A flicker of light caught the attention of Cen’s eyes, curious to what could be causing the glow, the winged foal headed off in that direction. Slowly he walked through the dark woods, his eyes straining but still seeing in the low light. A small shape appeared in the distance, it was about his size, except it did not have four large wings upon its back. The multiple eyed foal stared at the blue lightning foal, “Hello there.” His voice was light and cheerful, with a touch of surprise; he had not expected to meet anyone at this hour.

Every day something was different, the noises, the smell, not part of the world ever seemed familiar to the small foal. The only smell that was familiar was the smell of his siblings and mother. It was easy to distinguish them from other things despite never once seeing their faces. Instead he knew every scent, movement, even the sound of his or her hooves when they touched the ground who was who. The small tingles of his mother’s bells, the small flapping of wings from his brother, even the little dropping noise from his sister’s mane he could hear it all.

What he could not do was see. Everything lived in a world of pitch-blackness, he could not see what in front of him, or behind him. Everything was the same color of darkness; something that he could only assume by his sibling’s words was how the sky was at night but lacking in little dots of light. Tira could only imagine, and that was what he did, he merely imagined what his siblings could look like, what even he looked like. Lightening as his mother had spoken, lightening dancing along his back bright and bold, leaving the foal the understanding that he must have been bright, the opposite of the darkness in his sight.

Even now it was black, as Tira took small careful steps away from where his family lingered. They had stopped for the night, now looking for somewhere to sleep while the great orb of burning light would appear along the lands. Taking another careful stepped he paused as the noise of something shifting and moving caught his ears, not long after a voice sounded as the unfamiliar scent filled his nose.

“Hello, who are you?” Immediately Tira asked his ears still focused on the new arrival’s sounds of movements.

Like a moth to the flame Cen was drawn to the blue light, his eyes were mesmerized by the glow and how it almost seemed to be alive. He was silent for a while after the foal asked the question, slowly he collected himself and smiled, “I am Cenuvaihen, but everyone calls me Cen. What is your name?” The foal blessed of the eyes took his time to look at the foal before him, the blue glow from the lightning on his body and the orb upon his brow allowed for Cen to see him clearer. His companion’s mane was made up of feathers and his eyes were closed, but a design of an eye was upon the eyelid, it was a curious sight. Why would one walk around with their eyes closed? Especially at night? Even those who have two eyes could see some what it in the pale light of the stars, could it be that the one before him was unseeing? It was an idea that was so strange and unimaginable to Cen who could not imagine the world without seeing it with his eight eyes.

He wanted to know if what he thought was the truth, if the soquili before him was actually blind or just playing a game. Cen was getting better at telling lies from truths, but there were times when he was not sure if he could believe what he saw or heard. There was only one way to find out, “I uh have a personal question,” his voice turned sheepish, “Can you see me?” His face colored, “I’m so sorry! I did not mean it to come out so abruptly and rude. Please forgive me, I am just really curious and was not sure since you have your eyes closed and the idea of being blind is new to me… I could never fathom it…” He trailed off, he did not want to tell the foal that he had eight eyes, perhaps the foal had a fear of spiders or something and it made him flee.

Tira continued to step slowly towards the sound of the new figure, he smelt like something warm with the faint fragrance of flowers and trees. It smelt like a place he had not yet traveled to peeking the curiosity of the foal as various questions began to fill his mind. Most of them simple, like what colors was he? What did he look like? Was he even a soquili? Maybe it was some sort of other creature? Maybe a deer?

“My mother called me Xanoigma Tiresias but you can call me Tira, it is easier that way.” Giving the new comer a small grin, or at least what he was sure by his sibling’s words was a grin by his odd maw. He repeated the name in his head doing his best to remember the sound of the word to the smell of that it belonged to.

As the question blurted from the other, Tira began to frown as he slowly shook his head. “No…… I can not see you. I do not see anything but darkness. It does not matter if my eyes are open or closed it always looks like the same black color. It is easier to keep them closed that way others know or at least can tell that I can not see them.” For once there was a feeling of sadness the crept along Tira’s body as the other talked. Never being able to fathom? Never had he been able to see, nor had he ever thought of being able to see like others but it never had bothered Tira before. Now there was deep sadness that he was well aware of being completely different from others.

“It is ok.” Tira replied as the other apologized.

“Xanoigma Tiresias.” The name was strange upon the tongue and spoke of a hidden meaning much in the way that his own name did and that of his family. Cen watched the colt as he committed his name to memory and was it his scent to memory as well? How strange would it be to not see the world but to smell it, hear it, and feel it? Detail lost to him would surely be picked up by Tira, for Cen could not place a scent of another, had his other senses been impacted by his increase in sight?

Cen could see that his words had hurt the other foal and even if they said it was okay, the eight eyes told him that it was not alright. The words were a lie to Tira and to Cen, “No it’s not, I hurt you because I didn’t finish my sentence. And after I say these next words I will understand if you wish to leave or flee… The reason I cannot fathom living in darkness and not seeing,” Cen swallowed, why was he having trouble telling this foal that he had eight eyes? He was not ashamed of what he looked like and the foal would either flee or stay, “I have been blessed by the Spirit of All Hallows, it gave me a darker appearance than that of my fellow herd members and it gave me the ability to see the world in great detail, for it gave me eight eyes, rather than the usual two. I see so much that sometimes it is over whelming. I can imagine many things, but I cannot imagine complete darkness without detail, without a tiny glimmer of light. I am sorry that my words hurt you, I was just afraid of what you would do if you knew, most who encounter me believe me to be sort of monster that steals eyes (how ridiculous is that?) even if my appearance is mostly Angeni.” Cen shook his head and turned his attention back to Tira, “Sorry, I have begun to ramble. I have caused you pain and I wish to make up for my thoughtless words, how can I make it up to you?”

His ears twitched, trying to listen to any sound the other foal made, any ruffled noise of his body moving to the sound of his hooves shifting his weight. Despite not being able to see anything there was still some ways that the foal could tell and guess the look on his new found friend. His current guess was something of apprehension, maybe hesitation, with maybe a mixture of something else? It was a guess, it was always a guess, but it was one Tira was mostly reassured he had gotten right.

As the other foal spoke he tilted his head to one side, a rather confused or more of what Tira had learned from his siblings was a confused look on his muzzle. There were questions, some less important than others forming in his head but he was patient waiting for the other foal to finish.

“I don’t understand… why would I leave because of that?” Shaking his head slowly he gave a small smile before giving a soft chuckle. “I can’t see, you could have forty eyes and yet I wouldn’t be able to tell if you look weird or not. To me everyone is someone, there is no normal or not normal just voices attached to names and smells. I have to admit though having eight eyes does sound overwhelming, I can’t see anything and it would be hard for myself as well to imagine seeing so many things all at once. I don’t think you are any eye snatcher, and if it makes you feel any better my siblings and I were also blessed by Spirit of All Hallows, or cursed depending on your viewpoint.”

Stepping forward he did his best leaning far enough to touch his nose to what he had only guessed where one of the wings would have been as if trying to give some reassurance with some hidden desire of wanting to feel feathered wings. “Angeni I have heard of, what they look like I don’t know either other than having big bird like wings… your’s feels like bird wings too. As for you apology.” Shaking his head a few times he gave larger grin or at least one he figured he had mustered. “Don’t worry about it, really.”

Something he said or did confused the other foal, a perplexed look came across his countenance as his head tilted to the side as if considering the unseen before him. How could he clarify? Cen really did not wish to put his hoof into his mouth again, but Tira saved him from that by explaining his confusion. A smile appeared on Cen’s face and could be heard in his voice as well as relief. “Good, I am glad. I was not sure if you had some unexplainable fear of spiders or something,” Cen stopped his next question from coming out of his mouth, he did not want to seem rude by asking if the foal knew what a spider was, so he continued on with his next form of questioning, “What is your viewpoint? Do you believe yourself to be cursed or blessed?” The tiny winged foal took in a deep breath and spoke in a rush, “Okay, so this may be a strange question and a bit forward, as we have just met, but I am curious… What do I smell like?” Hopefully it was not a scent that was off-putting, sometimes he worked with herbs and their poultices could get quite potent and nasty.

The blind foal leaned his head forward and placed his nose within the feathers of Cen’s wings. It was an odd sensation, not quite what the wind felt like when it played with his plumage. The touch was soft and exploratory, seeing yet not. It also tickled like mad; it kept all of Cen’s will power not to twitch his feathers in response. With extraordinary amount of will power, the multi-eyed foal held completely still as the other explored his four wings with his muzzle, trying not to jolt each time Tira unearthed one of his sensitive tickle spots.

“Angeni do have bird like wings, they actually have four wings upon their back, and usually if they are pure they have head wings that are situated behind their ears and a pair of wings on their hind legs.” As he described the location of each of the wings, he guided the blind Tira to the location of the wings on his own body and then pointed to where they would be on Tira’s with his wing if Tira had such wings. “I am not a pure angeni, I’m only half, so I am without the hind wings, but my wings are special, for each set of wings there are a pair of eyes.” As he said this, the wings on his wings blinked, not that Tira could see this, they just liked getting the attention they feel they deserve.

“I still want to make it up to you somehow, is there anything you can think of that you would like me to do for you? Tell you a story? Describe how something is? Create something herbal, although those are usually smelly and may be a little strong for your senses…” Cen trailed off, not sure what else he could do for the foal, “I guess I have one more question for you… will you let me be your friend?”

His head turned slightly as a hum sounded over his lips as if he was pausing, thinking about the question the other foal had presented to him. He wasn’t entirely sure at all if he considered it a blessing or a curse, to be fair he wasn’t entirely sure of what his appearance looked like, and even more so what it looked like in contrast with other foals. There was, however from his mother, the question of rather he was born blind as a result of the spirits or if it was simply something that he would have ended up with regardless or if it was a trait passed from some unknown relative of her family.

“I think in some ways its both. I think it’s a blessing to be gifted with something special something unique that most do not have, something that sets you apart from others, but it’s a curse that others do not see it as so. As for your smell.” He took a deep breath of his wings before smiling softly at him.

“You smell like earth, I mean… like the smell after it rains the sweet dampness of the ground and the light fresh scent of flowers and grass wafting in the air. There something else, I am not sure what its not something I know… but its good all the same.”

He continued to run his nose along the rest of the foal’s wings, ignoring as the feathers continued to tickle him softly. A part of him knew better, that he should have asked to do so but he was curious how feather wings were shaped on a soquili than what wings were on a bird. In most ways they were rather similar, but larger, much larger than any bird and the fact that he had four he wondered how that looked on his back. Did it sort of sit like a bird? Or where they gangly? He tried to imagine what they would feel if they had them on his own back but the thought was easily lost as Cen continued to point out where the other set of wings were. For a moment his mind thought of some really strange bird like creature.

But he was reassured that was incorrect as he pulled away when the foal mentioned the eyes.

“I hope I didn’t hurt them, your eyes on your wings, and no you don’t need to make it up to me. You already have so don’t worry about it.” Grinning again, or what taking the look his mother said that made him appear happy he nodded.

“Yes of course I will be your friend.”
