"I don't let just any ragtag adventurer into my guild, friend! Let's see what sort of moxie you got! In each of the dungeons of our region I've placed a colored bowtie! Be a dear and fetch it for me will you?"

Rewards: x1 Colored Bow Accessory + Partner Voucher
-only after completing this mission can you roll for your partner Pokemon.

Glitter cave. What a strange name for a strange place. There wasn't much glitter here-- it was dull and runny; the cave ceilings were leaking and there was an overwhelmingly powerful mildew smell clinging to the interior. It hit you in the face moments after exposing yourself to the inside.
It was most unwelcoming.
The Meowstic approached with caution and a paw to his face in futile attempt to blot out the powerful stench. It wasn't gag worthy, but it was far from appealing. Why would anyone want to come here? It was worth removing from the map itself. Destroy it. The chances are anyone else being here were... highly likely. No one would mind and no one would miss it.

How large a place was this anyway? A frown crossed Viann's face only after a good twenty minutes of senseless walking. They were given a general idea as to where they were going, or what they were looking for, but nothing here had anything in the world to do with 'some shiny bright cavern.' He came to a halt again, and like clockwork, turned his attention about his surroundings for another thorough examination of progress. It wasn't complicated, it was rather straight forward. This elongated cave had little twists and turns to it and he understood why his so called directions were so straightforward... but it seemed to make things more complicated? Distance was somehow harder to gauge in a straight path. Turns often gave you a sense of time spent getting from one to the other. Even if you're wrong, you're generally close if you have a decent perception of time. Viva taught him that and it stuck to him since. He was his own method of navigation.

His drifting would come to a unwelcoming halt from where he stood as the Meowstic's figure was tackled to the ground accompanied by a loud grunt from the force of the impact. The feline would find himself back to his senses pinned do the ground under a clearly angered Poochyena, possibly out of trespassing into territory, before regaining his bearings enough to kick the canine up and off of him with his hind legs.
Viann rolled back onto his stomach and onto his 4 paws with an angry hiss at the recovered Poochyena, who now minded his distance. Dark types. They were an awful, awful match up for psychics but Viann didn't seem entirely phased. You stood your ground, waiting.
There was a small mimic of movement between the two. A slight motion of legs, the heightening or lowering of the back, and then the attack. The two bodies mingled for only a moment before the feline ended up on top, in his own sort of advantage.
He was a quadruped, but he had hands.
Straddling his aggressor, Viann locked his hands around the Dark type's throat. His force a threat more than an attempt to kill. And with reason, he needed some answers.
“Why are you here?”
“Why did you attack me?” His voice was quiet-- a near whisper in tone. “Where is there a cavern of light here?” “You didn't answer my--” Viann's grip tightened, punctuating his intent. “Where is a cavern of light? In this cave?” The dark type's eyes twitched, and Viann's grip loosened. “You're in the wrong place.” “But I was told it was here--” “No- no, you need to go deeper.” The Meowstic's brow arched, skeptical. Deeper was inside the cave. “Look, when you reach the center, you can go up. Once you're back outside, there's another cave.” “That's the one I want?” The straining Dark type nodded and squirmed. The duo shared one final stare off before Viann backed off, releasing the canine. “...Good.” The reply drifted off his breath like an after thought. He had little time for these petty affairs. He was here for one, simple little thing. A thing that didn't even belong here in the first place, he just wanted it. He wanted it so bad. Getting that dumb little ribbon meant he could finally get involved in the actual missions and maybe find his sister.

Viann carried on with little concern for the Poochyena, or it's actions. Much to everyone's benefit, the Dark type merely gave the Meowstic an annoyed glared before shaking his coat off a running off back to one of few tunnels in the walls-- clearly made over time by him and.... whoever else lived here.
Trash lived in trashy areas.

On the bright side of it all, the Poochyena didn't lie. Viann eyed the entrance of the large cavern with a sort of curiosity, but didn't enter immediately. Instead the psychic turned, staring off into the distance of the land from his height. There was so much here. It would take his life and then some to cover it all. The acknowledgement was disappointing, to say the least. Oh well. He'd have to make an active effort to avoid grounds others covered, perhaps.
The Meowstic turned back toward his destination and proceeded forward. It was in there, it seemed. And it sounded easy enough, until you actually entered it. An irritated sigh left the psychic and echoed around the large, circular cave. It was utterly massive. Considerably more so on the inside than it looked.
And the crystals-- so many crystals. They covered the floor and walls of varying sizes and spectrums of color. He wasn't just going to sort of find a colorful ribbon hidden in here, but his search began. And it lasted hours, all with only minor, minute or two breaks to rub his eyes until he could see clearly again.

In his searching, the glows of the crystals and the overall light source in the room vanished suddenly, like a light switched off and the Meowstic turned out in a moment. The feline would be greeted by a rather large, angry looking Vigoroth in the entrance to the cavern. Their stare off lasted only a second before it released a loud, engaged shrill into the cave, shaking it where it stood and crystals shattered. Viann himself was up and over a rock with his head tucked low the moment the creature so much as opened it's mouth. This was territorial behavior. The aggression was sudden and clear-- he didn't belong here. Viann opened his eyes in mild panic, head turning up enough to glance at the cavern within his line of sight. He had to get it-- somehow, before he died. It had to have been hidden somewhere within the back here-- he checked the entire front, so that only meant--

The psychic looked down as his paw touched an unfamiliar texture, given his surroundings.
Kidding me, that Sylveon casually placed it behind a rock in a room full of crystal.
Maybe it wasn't that dumb.

Viann clutched the ribbon in his paws as he glanced over the rock at the Vigoroth behind him. That moment of eye contact appeared to trigger a revelation within the Sloth's mind that the intruder did, indeed, still exist. And the mayhem continued near instantaneously. It was time to leave.
The Meowstic turned, placing the bow tightly within his jaw as he hopped up onto the rock and with a light lift of his ears, filled the room with an aggressive, blue glow, blowing the Vigoroth back through the entrance of the cave. He beelined around the staggering normal type and off the side of the cliff without second thought. He was small, this entire terrain was leveled... there were plenty of edges for him to progress down and the only activity left behind him were a series of screams and screeches.

Veilmys

Veilmys would be there, waiting and ready to greet Viann with a smile and an outstretched ribbon. "Welcome back. You didn't have too much trouble finding it, I hope?" The comment might've seemed snarky or critical but the tone of voice was a heavy assurance that it was honest. When you really thought about it, actually, putting such a gaudily coloured bow directly against the most bland background in the area was probably intentional. It certainly stuck out against the rocks.

Once Veilmys had the bow in "hand", he would simply flip it over and place it on the floor before he set to work tugging at it ever-so-slightly to get a proper look at the back. He would be satisfied once he found a single brown thread going through the back, at which point he would nod and happily hand the bow back along with a simple voucher. "Congratulations! With this, you're an official member of the guild. When you're ready, head to the partner assignment office where you'll meet your partner and be supplied with the necessities."

Viann was now, fully and officially, a member of the guild.

"WAAAAH! I LOST MY MOMMA!! TAKE ME TO SEE MY MOMMA!!!"
Location: Glitter Cave
Floors: 10

(This post is reserved for the soon-to-be-done mission!)

What did it mean to be brave? He often wondered this when his thoughts were idle and unfocused. Was bravery more akin to foolishness than it was to courage? Courage was to face your fears despite the uncertainty and terror one would feel in doing so, yet bravery was more-or-less the same in that regard. The two words held almost the same meaning yet they felt so different on his tongue. He found he would rather be called brave than courageous.
He was certain it was because of the sound of it. It felt as though brave was simply something you earned to be called after displaying your courage.
So desperately did he want that, so much so he was willing to do whatever it took.

-------------------------------------------

"You are not a Rescue Team." If Gale were the spiteful type he would have frowned at those words immediately and left, but instead he frowned and continued to step forward.
The attendant standing next to their client was a taller Xatu, clicking her beak impatiently and leering at him through thick rimmed spectacles.
When she spoke next she looked toward the Pikachu yet her words were meant for the Eevee standing at her side.
"He's a Explorer, not a rescuer. Does that matter to you?"
The Eevee said nothing immediately, his vibrant green eyes locked on Gale. His expression was heartbreaking, lost, sorrowful, he seemed so small sitting there on his haunches around these much taller Pokemon.
While not exactly what you'd call a sap, Gale found himself resisting the impulse to awkwardly pat the child on the head and tell him everything would be okay, despite not knowing the full story of why he was here.
Yes, it was to escort this Eevee to its mother, but there was something deeper stirring beneath the surface he could not yet understand.
"No. It's all the same to me." Came the soft, whisper of a reply after what seemed like an eternity of waiting.
Another sharp click sounded from the Xatu's beak and she dismissed herself, Gale frowning at her back as he watched he disappear down the hall.

"What's this here? This the scrub?" The purple scarf at the Pikachu's throat twisted and shifted with movement and a fuzzy yellow head popped up from the folds to eye the Eevee with its own set of green colored hues.
The Normal Type didn't seem to flinch at the appearance of the Joltik, but his eyes did widen gradually and he cocked his head to the side as if confused.

"Ignore him. He's rude." Gale said simply, extending out one paw while the other went up to clamp over his partner's face and still his noise making.
"I'm Gale. This is Percy. We'll help you find your mom, okay?"

The Eevee's expression didn't change from its placid indifference but he gave a curt nod in response and that was good enough.
After a moment of strained arguing with Percival who was not fond of being forcibly shushed and an awkward bit of shuffling to get the tiny Normal Type into some gear of his own, Gale lead the way out of the guild toward their destination.
For some reason a prickling of unease rose along his spine but he ignored it in favor of focusing on the task at hand.
Instinct, he found, was lacking in the common sense department at times.

Other than the constant and annoyed chatter from his Joltik companion and the quiet scuffling of paws behind him, the trip to the caves themselves was highly uneventful though he had to pause and ask random passerby's to confirm his navigation quite a few times.
In Percy's words he "lacked any sense of direction and had the dopey look of a tourist". Gale took no offense, he was slowly learning to ignore most of his partners more intolerable behavior but he interfered every time the Bug type tried to engage their client.
The last thing he needed was the Eevee's feelings getting hurt by some callous remark and eventually Percy ceased his attempts at conversation.

In what felt like no time at all both Pikachu and Eevee, Percy being inside his scarf once more, stood outside one of the caves more well known entrances.
Its name was obvious from just the sight of it, past the edge where light shone in and he could see was a vast expanse of darkness dotted with small twinkling lights like the night sky. It was very pretty and Gale found himself starring for longer than he meant to by how astounding the sight was.
It was as if he was laying on his back, staring upward into the network of stars that cloaked the sky at the end of every day. The wide and unexplored cosmos that was space seemed so close, but so terribly far away as well.

Shaking his head the Pikachu turned and gave their client a gentle smile, but he was only given yet another blank stare. Whatever the issue with the young Eevee, he certainly hoped it could be cured by finding its mother.

"You know, I never asked your name. That was rude of me. I introduced myself and Percy-" At his name the Joltik's fuzzy head appeared once more from the top of Gale's scarf, "-but we never asked yours."

The Eevee starred back, mouth opening and closing slowly as if he kept losing the words he wished to speak with but after a moment his name unfurled before him in a soft, whispering tone.
"Alto."

"Alto?" Gale repeated, partially to test pronouncing it and partially to confirm that was indeed what the Eevee had said. A small nod reassured him he was correct.
"Well, Alto, its a nice name. Sounds very musical. Whats your mothers name? That way we can try calling for her as well while we search."
At that question there was a visible stiffening on the Eevee's part and he hunched his shoulders up, head down as if frightened.

"Oh. OH." It had been such a sudden shift in disposition Gale was left teetering for lack of what to say and he lifted his paws up waved them frantically, "I mean-that's okay. If you don't want to say. We can just look. Its no problem!"
At this Alto roused from his despairing posture and rewarded the Pikachu with a faint smile. Gale wasn't sure why the question had caused such a reaction, but he had a strange feeling it wasn't because the Eevee was saddened at the absence of his mother.

Tiny alarms went off at the back of his head but he once again ignored instinct trying to usurp logic. Maybe the Eevee had disobeyed his mother and wandered off? Maybe that was why he was lost?
Avoiding incurring your mothers wrath was something Gale could fully understand and support, so he held his tongue.

"Let's head inside then, shall we?" This time the Pikachu made Alto go first so he could keep an eye on him better, yet he kept his pace up in such a way they walked side-by-side in a manner of speaking. Percival, for his part, was content to stay inside Gale's scarf for the entire venture.

The smooth walls of the glitter cave soon revealed the secret of their sparkling depths as they walked deeper and deeper into the recesses of the cavern, tiny jewels of varying colors and sizes were embedded inside the walls and ceiling. They clung, like dewdrops, to every surface they could touch and Gale couldn't help but stare at them with wide eyes.
It wasn't something he'd ever seen before, and apparently neither had Alto who was gaping about the place with his mouth open and his usually somber mood lightened considerably.
Percy, as per norm, did not seem to care.

The Pikachu felt now was maybe a good time to try questioning his client again when he felt that nervous prickle along his spine once again.

It wasn't just his imagination. He was being watched. He'd felt it since they left the guild. All that little suspicion was building up to this and he'd ignored the warnings. Trying to look calm and unruffled still, he shifted closer to Alto and asked one, simple, question.
"Is there someone after you?"
His answer came in a stiffening of posture and widening of eyes, words weren't necessary.
"Your request wasn't just to find your mother, was it?" Gale ventured further and noticed, with some apprehension, that Alto's pace was increasing.
"Don't-"
But the Eevee took off into a run and the Pikachu frantically gave chase. It didn't take long for the sound of steps to resonate behind him and the presence he felt before became something much more tangible.

A thousand possibilities raced through his mind over the panicked squeaking of Percy, who had been rudely awakened from his dozing in the scarf by the sudden bouncing run Gale had broken into.
Why would the Eevee lie about wanting to find his mother? Why wouldn't he tell them he was being pursued by someone?

Off to the side he saw a flash of movement dive into his peripheral, yet the steps behind him were still steady and increasing. Another Pokemon had entered the fray and Gale chanced a glance over to it to see a Mightyena rocket past him after Alto.
"Stop!"
Despite being a Pikachu he was nowhere near fast enough to catch up and he feared their client was about to dog food when behind him a blinding light erupted and a shockwave of heat soared past him to slam into the dark canine, throwing him over Alto and into the opposing wall.
Gale skid to a stop as the entire cave shook, nearly colliding with the Eevee who had stopped directly before him.

The entire chamber shook violently and the stalagmites above wobbled in a highly dangerous manner.

Gale held his breath, but luck was not on his side as a crack split through one portion of the roof, the blast that had taken out the Mightyena having been powerful enough to jar loose an already weakening platform that began to drop down over them.

In a panic the Pikachu would forgo his manners and hastily gather Alto up into his arms before diving into a small cavern off to the side. At the last second he saw a flicker of glowing green orbs dashing off to the side, just before the rocky fragment crashed down and effectively locked them in.

It was a small cavern, just big enough for one to stand in the center and spin without touching a wall. Anything more and they'd be scraping against the gem-encrusted walls.

Alto had returned to his silent treatment and Percy had stopped cursing angrily, so Gale supposed that was better than moment before where both were in wild hysterics.
It didn't change the fact they were trapped in this hole, but it did make it more tolerable.
Asking the Eevee questions wouldn't work, he felt, and so he hadn't bothered. The dilemma at hand was enough to occupy Gale's thoughts.

For as long as he could remember he had been taught both tact and how to handle himself in a fight. Father's preference for physical strength had won him over from a young age and he could remember ceaseless hours charging about and snapping branches with his head. He had developed a tolerance for such doings and now he stared and considered the crumbling rock that was blocking their only way out.

He'd never broken stone before, yet this one was already falling apart. It would need more than he had ever given in terms of strength. Endurance. His all.
Gale visualized a thick branch propped up on a stone, the other end held firmly in his father's mouth.
'Visualize it breaking.'

The Pikachu's eyes closed and he inhaled so deeply it made both Alto and Percy, who had finally left his scarf sanctum, to look up.
"What're you thinking about, sparks?" The Joltik asked grumpily.

"I'm thinking..." Gale began, slowly, "That I can break this."

"HA! Don't make me laugh, bolts for brains. That's made of rock. Stone. That s**t Pokemon like us are weak to. You're gonna splatter whats left of your gray matter against it."

Gale said nothing in response, eyes still closed in thought.

"Break it?" Alto asked, the first actual words he had spoken without needing incentive and it caused Percy to turn to him immediately, starved for conversation apparently.

"Yeah, rocky here has a pretty thick skull. I've seen him shatter practice dummies at the guild before but those things are made of wood." Percy lifted a tiny claw to scratch at his face.
"I mean, hell, why not let him bludgeon himself to death. It beats sitting around and doing nothing."

"Y-you can't do that, you'll get hurt!" The Eevee was on his paws now and Gale turned to stare back at him unflinching.

"Getting hurt is part of life, you know." The Pikachu explained, blue eyes opening. "I would rather risk it than remain trapped in here. We still have to deliver you to your mother." His tone was calm, but his tone made it quite clear he didn't believe the excuse Alto had given them.

The Eevee scuffed his paws, sheepishly, "I uh...I'm not...looking for my mother. Quite the opposite actually, I'm...trying to get away from her." Both Gale and Percy exchanged a look but said nothing, the Pikachu lifted a paw and waved it in a sign to continue.

"D-don't misunderstand! My mother did nothing wrong! Sh-she and dad are great but I...I'm so tired of being so small and unable to do anything and th-they keep telling me I'll grow into myself on my own time b-but I don't want to wait! I h-heard there are evolution stones here in this cave, but was afraid of my parents catching wind to what I was up to...they uh...they were members of the old guild and still visit the city so I...I didn't want them to see the mission and realize it was me requesting it."
His parents were intuitive enough to realize when their child went missing, so if they had seen such a mission and in such an uncharacteristic tone such as the one that had been written down for it, they wouldn't have thought it was his.

"I'm tired of b-being afraid, of being so small, of being a coward." A small brown paw was lifted up to rub at his eyes which had begun to water and he gave a soft hiccup of alarm as he felt a paw on his head.

Gale smiled softly, no malice or annoyance apparent on his face. It was clear now just what was going on and he might have laughed had he not thought Alto would take offense.

"When you're in such a hurry to grow, you forget to live. I...think you should wait until you're older to evolve. Like your parents said, but...I don't think it's because you haven't grown into your own person. I think that you have, but you don't know what that person is yet."
The Pikachu's words were spoken slowly, thoughtfully, "Are you a kind person? Are you the kind who thinks first? The kind that acts first? Do you like excitement? Calm?"

Alto fell silent, still rubbing at his eyes, "I...I don't know. I like...I like music. I like feeling useful..."

"I think you want to grow in body, but that won't help you. The mind takes longer to grow. Rushing it won't help, it'll only make you feel smaller. Wouldn't you rather let it come naturally so it can grow with you?"

The Eevee said nothing, watery eyes watching the Pikachu.

"If you want to be brave you need to know when you should and when you shouldn't. Bravery is just a nice way of saying stupid with a cause."
Still smiling he turned to face the blockage of the cavern and he dropped down to all fours, head lowered.
"I've got a cause and this is pretty stupid." He said with a short laugh before lunging forward and sprinting around the room in a full circle before redirecting his path to the stone fragment.

His head slammed into it with a jarring crack and black stars ignited in his vision, seconds before he blacked out he heard shouting.

"MOM!"

"GALE, YOU DUMBASS!"

-------------

"Oh, hey! He's waking up!"

"Good god, blockhead! You scared the s**t out of me!"

Gale's blue eyes fluttered open, unfocused and blinking, and he sat up with a groan and pounding headache.
The first thing he noticed was the sleek Umbreon sitting before him, Alto at her side. She was pretty, slim and smiling. Her rings had an ethereal green glow to them and it was clear where Alto got his eyes from.

Percy scuttled forward from atop Alto's head to place himself on Gale's, his tiny claws kneading into the dulled fur.
"You knocked yourself out for half an hour! I told you not to do it!"

"I did it?" Gale turned sharply behind him to see he'd managed to take out a small chunk of the crumbling stone that had blocked the entrance. Not a lot, but enough for the two smaller Pokemon to squeeze out behind him.

"You did!" Alto declared, stepping forward, "It was pretty cool..."

"I'd like to apologize for my son." The Umbreon started, standing as well to tower over the younger Pokemon before her.
"I didn't realize how passionate he was about evolving until he'd run off..."

"B-but I won't be doing it again. I promise I...I plan to find out who it is I'll become first." The Eevee doggedly glanced away as his mother leaned down to give him a soft nudge on the side of the head.
"I think I know what you mean by bravery though. What you did...you accepted my mission and tried to help me. Even knowing it might end badly for you. Then you rammed your head into a rock."

"That wasn't bravery, that was desperation. It breeds the same thing I think..." Gale said with a wry smile.

"Still..." Alto began, "I want to know if I have what it takes to do the same."

"I wouldn't recommend ramming your head into a rock."

"Th-that's not what I mean I-" The Eevee paused, realizing Gale was trying to make a joke, "O-oh. Hah, well...I should avoid that yeah."

Gale made a mental note to stop attempting humor in the future and once more placed a paw on Alto's head.
"I think whatever you evolve into will be great."

"So do I." The Umbreon stated, nuzzling the Eevee and urging him to his paws. "Your father was worried, we should get back to him." Nodding the Normal type turned to leave, pausing only to offer a brief wave back to the Pikachu and Joltik before bounding off.

Gale watched in silence before turning to Percy with a smile.

"The ******** you looking at?"

"You were worried about me..."

"LIKE HELL I WAS-YOUR DUMBASS WENT RUNNING INTO A STONE WALL I THOUGHT YOU'D BRING THE ROOF DOWN ON ME TOO-"

As the screaming tirade began atop his head the Pikachu turned to make his way out of the cave, vaguely wondering if he'd have a nasty bruise on his head later...

Serrin & Client Eevee, Alto

There would be little fanfare waiting for Gale and Percy when they returned. Serrin would meet them when they returned. A brief summary would be exchanged at the Ivysaur's prompt and a proper one would have to be written up for his purview later on but in spite of the abridged nature of it Serrin would leave with a frown. Although they would find their reward of a Soothe Bell waiting for them when they returned to their team room, it wasn't until the next day that Serrin would actually see to them in person. The meeting would come in the morning with, surprisingly, little Alto wrapped in his vines and "hovering" about a foot off the ground with a bag in his mouth. "He's here to apologize."

Alto didn't seem terribly pleased about his situation but he wasn't entirely oppositional either. The bag dropped from his mouth with a heavy "thunk" and in a way that seemed almost practiced, though reasonably genuine, Alto apologized. "I'm very sorry for tricking you and lying to the guild in order to get them to do something for me."

"And..."

"My dad's really good at finding things, so we brought some stuff. You can have one of them, if you want."

"And the other two..."

"...Are going to the guild as an apology to the staff who spent their time on my mission."

"Good." Serrin let Alto down carefully and withdrew his vines. "Good job on your mission, you two. It wasn't your typical fare in more ways than one but in spite of it you did a decent job but, in the future, mind your client a bit better. They wouldn't be asking us for help if they were strong enough to risk being attacked." It was a soft warning rather than a reprimand and it was the only thing Serrin would speak of poorly before departing to leave Alto, Gale and Percy alone together.

The moment Alto was convinced that Serrin had left, he looked back to Gale and spoke in a much more earnest, if somewhat uneasy, tone. "You said that... maybe I haven't grown into my own person. I think you're right." Alto shifted slightly back and forth on his paws in a moment of silence before he continued. "I don't think I'm going to grow up if I stay with my parents. I need to do something in order to find out who I'm supposed to be, so..." Alto swallowed. "Can I join your team?"

The choice belonged entirely to Gale because god knows that Percy didn't have a choice in anything the team did.

Regardless, the mission was complete and team Amethyst had received both their rewards and recognition.

Skye & Quil

Skye glanced up at their supplies- they had enough food for several days on the road, along with two water canteens and a pack of first aid supplies. She’d taken the liberty of preparing a few packages of medicinal herbs as well, since she knew her healing abilities didn’t extend to other Pokemon, but she very much hoped not to need it on their mission.

They were supposed to be dealing with a cave-in, from what she understood. It would be a very interesting mission, certainly, and entirely different from the sort of rescue work that she was used to. A cave-in was a situation that required precision and skill. She just hoped that she had the knowledge base and ability to meet those standards.

Quil dropped down from the ceiling on a thread of spider’s silk, a tiny cardboard box hanging from his front claws. Skye blinked in surprise; she hadn’t expected her partner to help much with the packing process, considering his size, but she was pleased to be reminded of something important. It was much better to have everything together before they left.

”Matches, I take it? Good thinking; thank you,” she quipped brightly, accepting the little box from the hanging Joltik. He was quite fit for a little bug, though that probably just added to his general fitness level in the first place. ”We should probably bring a few candles, too- just in case we need a reliable light source in the cave. Do you think you could add it to our supply list?”

Quil nodded, and she watched the little electric-type crawl straight back up his strand of spider silk toward the ceiling. He’d have to go and put in a request, but she could meet him there once she’d finished packing what they already had. It usually took a while for supply requests to be filled, even with something as small as candles. By the time they got there, they would have the rest of their supplies wrapped and ready for her to pick them up.

Skye paused as she continued to wrap their food rations in brown paper. The simple fruits and flatbreads would keep their energy up while they worked in the field, but she couldn’t help being reminded of home when she looked over them. Maxi had taught her how to make simple meals before she left- the old Toxicroak always put his heart and soul into everything he made. Her parents did the same for their rescue work, back when they were guild members. Now it would be her turn, and her turn alone. Was she really ready for this?

- - - - -

It was several hours later when Skye and Quil finally reached the caves, the Espeon nothing short of gorgeous in the light of the afternoon sun. It was certainly something shared between her and her mother, at least where their appearances and affinity for sunlight were concerned.

She could feel her partner’s claws tighten on her leather collar, tugging slightly to get her attention. She simply twitched an ear, glancing back to the little Joltik. He was pointing up on the crest of the hill, where a Clefairy and very concerned-looking Sentret sat waiting. ”The letter was from a Clefairy, right? That’s probably our client.”

The mouth of the cave was clear of the tropical forest that surrounded, though the air was still quite humid even at this elevation. She wasn’t overtly surprised that such caves would break down in places, with how much moisture was sure to be hidden in the depths of the rocky tunnels.

Skye nodded vaguely to her partner, thinking about what was to come. His suggestion was sound enough logic by her standards; presumably there wouldn’t be too many Clefairy waiting in the same area. She could always be wrong, but it rarely hurt to ask.

A quick introduction later, and the Clefairy was already launching into an explanation of what had happened. “We have a bunch of mining teams- if we can find anything of value, it really helps us get a fair trade on food. There’s just not a lot to eat, especially for anybody in the lower caves,” she mumbled sheepishly, and Skye could tell from the emotions that seemed to flow off of her that she felt horribly ashamed and embarrassed by the whole ordeal. There was fear, too, presumably for her friends, but Skye didn’t feel it polite to ask. There were more important things to focus on. ”Some of the Klefki have taken over our mining tunnels, though, so we had to switch into some of the older passages. We didn’t know they were so unstable when we went in, but…”

Skye’s ears flattened as she heard the Clefairy’s voice crack, helpless just to watch as the fairy-type broke into tears. Heaving sobs rocked her round body, and the Sentret beside her rested a paw to his friend’s arm. ”I can guide you partway, but honestly I’m too scared to get in next to the cave-in. It’s not a safe place, the way those tunnels were dug out. We put in some temporary support beams to try and hold up the tunnel entrance, but I don’t know how long they’ll hold.” He sounded much calmer, but there was an evident distress in his eyes that was difficult to ignore.

”We’ll do our very best to help your friends, I swear it,” Skye said firmly, her eyes glimmering with a grim determination. ”We can start off now, if you’re ready. I’ll need a full run-down on the missing Pokemon as we go- I don’t plan on leaving anyone behind if we can avoid it.”

”Thank you, Miss. I’m sorry.” It seemed all that the Clefairy could say at the time, so the Sentret quickly took over on the briefing, already leading them into the tunnels as they talked it over.

Their passage into the cave system was much more narrow than Skye had expected, with the rough and uneven edges of the walls intruding more than once into her personal space. It felt almost claustrophobic, especially as the slate-like rock slowly faded into a more crystalline surface. Crystals and geodes seemed to burst from higher points on the ceiling, with the lower areas scraped clean by the cave’s inhabitants. Claw marks were still visible from where different Pokemon had scavenged new treasures or tried to clear a better path. She just wished they’d done a better job on the rocky floor, on which she’d already tripped twice in the darkness.

The air was as humid as she expected, though not uncomfortably warm. It was just damp, perhaps aiding the slow erosion of the rock surfaces that surrounded the crystals. It would have been beautiful, were it the primary focus of their visit.

”There were three in our crew- a Minccino, a Kirlia and a Zigzagoon. There might be others, though, if the cave-in goes back further than our mineshaft.”

”And you think they’re trapped behind the rubble?” Skye questioned, her ears twitching nervously as they entered the cave. It was very beautiful, with a variety of gems lining the cavern walls. Every surface and facet seemed to glimmer and shine in the candlelight as Quil pulled one from the pack slung across Skye’s back, lighting a match with a quick spark of static.

The Sentret seemed uncomfortable at the question, a guilty expression crossing his face. ”We don’t actually know if anyone survived the cave-in. I’m not proud of it, but the second I heard the cracking I just ran. I know Mirriam did, too, but it doesn’t make it better.” The normal-type dragged his stripy tail along the cave floor, a trail of dust being parted as he walked. ”They’re alive. They just have to be… and I just don’t know what to do. If they’re gone and I did nothing to save them…”

Skye frowned sympathetically, glancing over at the Sentret with a concerned expression. ”I’m sorry. I know this must be hard for you, but we’ll do our best to help your friends. You did the right thing, calling on the guild for help- you would’ve only gotten trapped along with them if you’d tried to go back.”

The Sentret stared at her with a sort of dazed, weary expression, and he looked away. She knew it would take time for him to heal from all of this; perhaps even longer than it would take for the Clefairy. Everyone grieved differently- she just hoped that she could save some lives today.

The two Pokemon bid their goodbyes, and Skye turned her attention to the dark tunnel ahead. The cave was much wider here, branching into different side tunnels up ahead. To her right, another side-tunnel led into the darkness. The surface of its floor and walls were even rougher than the entrance had been, with untrimmed crystals and rock protrusions jutting directly into the center of the tunnel. Not very friendly to anyone who might venture in, but at least the natural surfaces appeared to be roughly textured. She wouldn’t slip and fall, as long as she minded where she placed her paws.

Wondering vaguely if this was the right tunnel, Skye stepped into the entrance of the narrow passage, glancing around her. Sure enough, the sight of temporary support beams were criss-crossed throughout the walls and veiling, but she was almost certain that the supports ended about twenty feet in- as did the tunnel itself. A very unnatural pile of loose rocks and rubble lay ahead of her.

”They don’t think their friends are going to come back,” Quil murmured quietly, still holding the candle tight in his claws. Skye took the candle from him with a gentle pulse of psychic energy, holding it above their heads for better lighting. ”I don’t think they believe we can help.”

Skye gave him a strained sort of smile, sighing softly. ”Can you really blame them? We probably don’t look like the sort of rescue team you’d expect for this kind of work. You’re the size of my paw, and I’m small enough as it is.” Her voice was quiet, too, as if afraid to break the overwhelming silence of the partially-collapsed cave passage.

She received no response to that, and she simply padded along the center of the tunnel, heading toward the rocky blockage in the center. It was a combination of mottled gray stone, dirt piles and the shining chunks of shattered crystals. It spanned the full width of the tunnel, and the top of the pile seemed to be about six or seven feet in from the edges of the debris.

”Hold on, okay? I’m gonna see if I can’t get a better look at this thing. Maybe there’s a crack we can see through to the other side,” she noted, feeling for the first time as if she didn’t need to whisper inside the cave. It didn’t seem as unstable, standing this close to the pile. As long as they were careful, they should be okay.

Placing one paw after the other, she climbed a few steps higher onto the pile. She had to be very careful, nervous of jostling loose the piece that might be holding the entire ceiling aloft. ”If you can carry me up to that gap near the edge, I might be able to crawl through to the other side. I’m small and light enough that I don’t think I’ll disturb anything,” Quil suggested, his large cerulean eyes shining with determination.

Skye felt a jolt of surprise, but quickly masked the emotion. Quil had a great love for other Pokemon- of course he’d risk his own safety to help. It was no different than what she was doing already, and he’d come this far. ”It’s worth a shot- just be careful, okay? It’s one thing to lose someone my size, but if you get caught in there…” Her conviction wavered, suddenly very afraid for her partner’s life. Quil was so small.

”It’s okay- I’ll be okay. We know what we need to do, and I know we can do it.” His voice was soft and firm. He was the bravest friend she’d ever had.

She used her psychic energy to lift him onto the rocky ledge, and stood with nervous anticipation as her partner disappeared into the dark.

Quillan fluffed his static-filled fur for warmth, as the cool stone sent shivers into his tiny body. He was grateful for his size, unlike many of his kind. This was the sort of work in which only he could manage the task, and he knew he could shine if he’d just be given the opportunity to succeed. Today was that day.

The darkness was no stranger to him, the electric-type bug navigating each nook and cranny of the gaps in the stones and crystals. With all of the dust and sediment settled to the bottom of the pile, the top was mostly free of obstruction. It was just the larger, heavier rocks that they couldn’t risk shifting from the pile.

As he moved, his delicate sense of hearing caught the sounds of movement and breathing. He could feel the vibrations through his claws, something digging into the soil somewhere below him. He held his breath, suddenly very anxious. If the soil was removed from the bottom of the blockage, he felt certain that the rest of the pile would collapse from underneath him. If that happened, well- Skye was certainly right to worry for him on the note of his physical stature.

”Hello?” he called, his voice stretched high as he yelled it as loudly as he could manage. This, by the terms of any normal Pokemon, was approximately an average speaking voice.

His answer came in the form of several confused voices, all calling out to the tiny voice amongst the rocks. He was pleased to hear a distinct pause in the digging. ”Stay where you are! Keep talking, I’m going to come down and find you,” he answered them, feeling as though his voice would quickly become very hoarse if he had to continue shouting to them for the whole mission. He was just happy to see survivors.

A pulse of an unfamiliar psychic energy grasped onto the Joltik and he was lifted down from the top of the rock pile, held aloft in front of a pair of glowing eyes. He gulped, a little uneasy about being handled in such a manner, but quickly relaxed as he was dropped into a delicate pair of pale hands. ”Are you here to help us?” The Kirlia chirped, her eyes wide with curiosity. It occurred to him that she might not have seen a Joltik before, given where she lived.

Looking around, he lit the match he’d carried through with him in his mouth, and caught a glimpse of several faces in the glow of the fire. A Zigzagoon and Minccino, stared at him from one side, easily fitting into the description that the Sentret had left them. The only issue was the other Pokemon, whose leg was trapped beneath the rubble at the Zigzagoon’s feet. Now he understood the digging noises he’d heard.

This side of the debris was much steeper than the outside, as if thrown aside mid-fall. He strongly suspected that this was the Kirlia’s doing, but said nothing about it. The cramped space held just enough room for the four survivors, with a shadowy pathway leading out the back and away from the cave-in. Strangely, none of the survivors seemed to consider the pathway other than to glance nervously in its direction. It was likely not a very good escape route.

”My partner and I are guild members- we’re here to make sure you’re all safe and get you out of here,” he recited, hoping to bring comfort to some of the trapped Pokemon. He could get out so easily, but they were stuck until he and Skye figured out a way for them to get back. ”I’m guessing she got caught when the tunnel caved in?” he added, gesturing to the very distressed Poochyena who lay quiet on the earthen cave floor.

Nervous, the Minccino nodded. He seemed reluctant to get near to the dark-type canine, as though he might get caught in the rubble if he were to stand too closely. The fluffy, dark-furred Pokemon simply grimaced back at the nervous normal-type, clearly reluctant to say anything about the situation either.

Quil glanced between the two, and then to the Kirlia and Zigzagoon in turn. Something was weird about this. ”Is something wrong?” he asked pointedly, his tiny voice still about as threatening as a fluffy white dandelion.

The Poochyena glanced away awkwardly, and not looking him in the eyes. ”I hurt my leg,” she retorted, stating the obvious. Her tone of voice carried an intensity that confused him. She spoke as if the weight of the world was on her shoulders, but it definitely didn’t match up with the words she spoke. She was afraid, but he didn’t understand why.

There was more to this, but his priority was still focused on making sure that everyone was physically safe. They had to somehow clear the debris without injuring the Poochyena any further than she already was, and he just wasn’t sure how they were going to accomplish that.

Glancing up at the Kirlia, he politely requested that she hold onto the candle for him, and to let him back through the rubble to meet his partner. She complied, if nervously, and the bug-type glanced down at the little huddle of survivors one more time. ”I’ll be back, okay? You can count on it. Just don’t try shifting any of this yourself- we’ll dig through and meet you on this side.” He waited to see a nod from each Pokemon in turn, and disappeared back into the crack in the blockage to relay what he found to Skye on the other side.

Skye flattened herself against the dirt floor, her eyes glowing with an unspoken warning as the Ursaring drew nearer. She could see the shimmer of reflected candlelight off of his massive claws, and the glow of his own eyes as he glared down at her. His sharp teeth were bared in a silent snarl, the massive bear Pokemon clearly unhappy with her presence in the tunnel.

She stepped forward, over a hunk of protruding crystal. She had to be very careful of where she placed her paws, else she risk twisting a leg and losing a fight against this stranger.

”I’m here to rescue the victims of a cave-in. My presence here is not a threat, nor is it any of your concern.” Skye’s voice was firm and unwavering, though her ears were still flat in nonverbal defiance. Her tail lashed behind her, clearly displeased with the aggressive display this newcomer was putting on.

”I can’t let you do that, Kitty,” the Ursaring growled, his deep voice echoing in the narrow passage.

The Espeon bared her fangs in her own, defensive snarl. ”What possible purpose could you have for wanting these kids to die?” It was true, the Pokemon she was supposed to be rescuing were even younger than she was. Even Quil was older.

”That’s none of your concern,” the Ursaring emphasized, a deep growl rising from his chest. ”Perhaps you should worry about your own safety, stupid cat.”

With that, the normal-type charged straight for the Espeon, his massive feet simply kicking aside the chunks of stone as he moved. His deadly claws swiped at the ground where Skye had stood just a moment before, leaving deep scars etched into the crystal where she’d been standing.

Skye, who’d been quick to dodge out of her adversary’s way, used Quick Attack to slam her body against the inside of the bear’s knees. The force sent him stumbling forward, and she twisted around him to bite at his ankles.

He roared in agitation, clawing again at the agile little Espeon who ducked away from his attacks. The Espeon darted around another chunk of crystal, trying to shift the fight away from the tunnel blockage. If they got too close, she feared for what might happen to any survivors on the other side. She blasted him in the face with a psybeam, hitting him in the jaw and once again forcing him back.

He rounded on her again, leaping to pin her to the uneven stone. As she dodged, she realized her mistake- he now stood between her and her charges. He seemed to recognize this, rolling his shoulders confidently as he sized up his opponent. Physically, he barred her path toward the tunnel blockage, preventing shifting his weight as she tried to think of a path around him. He seemed determined to stay there.

Skye didn’t agree with that.

She leaped upward, psychic energy flashing around her as she attacked the Ursaring head on. He swiped at her, missing her shoulder by a hair’s breadth, and clawing through the air. She bit hard onto the bridge of his nose, perched precariously on his face as she attacked him.

The great bear threw her off, screeching in pain as blood splattered from his now-broken nose. He charged at her, blinded by pain for a moment as he tried to scare her back. Unintentionally, however, his claws raked the support beam behind her.

There was a sickening crack as the wood gave way, and a mixture of rocks and soil poured in from the weakened ceiling.

Alarmed, Skye launched another burst of psychic energy, stilling the fall of the collapsing ceiling. She was straining to support it, but it was worth it if she could prevent harm to herself and her adversary.

Massive chunks of rock and crystal were suspended in the air, the dust still slipping between them as it settled onto the floor. It made it more difficult to see, to breathe, but at least it wasn’t going to bury them alive in heavy stones.

”I won’t allow you to risk those kids’ safety- it’s not going to happen.” Skye’s eyes narrowed angrily as she spoke, the white gem on her forehead shining brightly with psychic energy. Her breathing was rapid and strained, utilizing her energy to hold off the falling debris. She wasn’t going to lose this battle, not with lives on the line. Quil couldn’t rescue those kids on his own, hard as he might try, and she couldn’t allow another cave-in to risk the safety of anyone here.

He regarded her with surprise, but did not move. He did not seem eager to disrupt her concentration, staring uneasily at the stones that hovered above his head. ”Saving those kids is its own risk- I won’t let you through,” he replied, his voice coarse with anger and frustration. The empathic psychic hesitated; however, noting the regret that seemed to flow off him in waves.

She froze, standing her ground against the Ursaring. ”If there’s a reason for all this, spill it. My partner’s on the other side of this blockage.” She would give him one chance. If his reason wasn’t good enough, she would have to bring him down. The thought of making that choice, that decision- it made her a little uncomfortable. She wasn’t a violent person. But she knew that some judgement calls were necessary, and she would do everything in her power to stop him. She just hoped she was strong enough to avoid serious injuries on either side.

The Ursaring snarled at first, suspicious of her words, but as Skye continued to wait, he seemed to relent. ”If what you’re saying is true, your partner is as good as dead,” he began tersely, the tension never leaving his posture as he loomed over the Espeon. ”This blockage is the only thing keeping us safe-it has to be there.”

Skye frowned, in turn suspicious of him. She knew that Quil could escape back through the rubble, but she didn’t know how easily he could do so if there was indeed something threatening behind that cave-in. ”What’s back there- behind the rocks?” she demanded, her fur standing on end from the tension between them.

”You really don’t know?” The Ursaring straightened a little, regarding her again as he tried to size up just who the hell he was talking to. ”There’s a beast in there. We thought it was legend, until things started happening. People who went down those tunnels would go missing, come back with injuries they couldn’t explain. Some never did turn up. Tunnels started collapsing on their own, people who’d never been here would turn up dead. That thing is a monster.”

Skye’s heart sank, feeling a wave of unease fall over her. Quil was still over there, perhaps still searching for the surviving teens. She could sense a truth to his words, earnest despite his pain and anger, but she said nothing. Mulling it over for a moment, she realized that he meant to trade the lives of a few for the safety of everyone else. What he said next was only a confirmation.

”I never met to hurt those kids, whoever they are. I didn’t know about ‘em at all- ‘til you showed up to play hero. But they’re not worth risking everyone else for.”

”Can we not seal it over again, once the kids are free?”

The Ursaring hesitated, but frowned, shaking his head. ”I don’t like it. That thing could’ve been drawn to the noise, be too close by. We don’t even know what we’d be risking our necks for- they might not be alive back there.”

The Espeon shook her head. ”My partner is a Joltik. He’s gone through the gaps to check for survivors. I won’t fight you now, if you’ll agree to wait for his report. I have to save those children, but I can work with you to keep everyone else safe while I do it.” Her voice was firm, but her insides felt like jelly. There was a storm brewing, and she didn’t know if she could stop it.

Reluctantly, the Ursaring nodded. Almost awkwardly, he glanced expectantly back up at the broken ceiling. He seemed uneasy about it, clearly not eager to be crushed.

The Espeon, getting weary of trying to support it, took his agreement as a promise that he wouldn’t attack her while she attempted to stabilize the tunnel again. She quickly set to work with her psychic abilities, trying to settle the most dangerous chunks of rock against the tunnel walls instead of floating them above their heads. It was tricky, finicky work, but her detail-oriented nature made it a little easier to manage.

- - - - -

Quil crawled out of the wreckage, only to find his partner sitting stiffly to the side of the tunnel, a very tense Ursaring staring her dead in the eyes from the other side. Neither one seemed to move, at first, but as he approached them, tensions seemed to spark in the air. It would have been comical, if not for how aggressively the Ursaring was regarding his friend.

”Quil! Did you find them, the survivors?” There was an edge to her voice, as if determined to emphasize that the trapped Pokemon were alive. It made him a little uneasy, but her voice was certainly welcoming. She sounded very relieved to have him back on her side of the cave-in, for whatever reason. The Ursaring was less pleased, fidgeting in place.

”Yes, Skye. There are four of them, and they’re all alive. The Kirlia, Zigzagoon and Minccino all seem a little shaken, but they’re okay.” He crawled up on a chunk of rock in front of his partner, staying close in case the Ursaring became hostile. Large Pokemon made him nervous, and with good reason. ”I’m a little worried, though- there’s a Poochyena with her leg caught under one of the rocks. The others are sticking pretty close to her, but I don’t think they all get along well. Anyway, we’ll have to be careful about getting them out- moving anything too fast might hurt her more.”

The Ursaring was dead silent through all of this, an expression of horror slowly dawning on his face. As the Poochyena was mentioned, he leaped to his feet, nearly smashing his head onto the rocky ceiling as he moved forward. ”A Poochyena? What’s her name, did she give it to you?” He demanded, abruptly leaning in over the tiny electric-type to listen more closely.

Quil was startled, looking apprehensive at being so close to someone who could so easily crush him by accident. He flinched, static sparking off his pale golden fur. ”I didn’t ask for names, but she has gold eyes and dark speckles on her face. They could’ve been dust, but I think it’s just markings on her fur.” His voice wavered, very nervous as to who this stranger was.

The Espeon wrapped her tail protectively around him, eyes glowing fiercely. The grateful Joltik gripped her tail in his tiny claws, snuggling in against her soft, lavender fur. He was much safer when attached to his partner. ”Do you know the girl?” he heard her ask, voice low and stern.

The bear Pokemon seemed stunned, still horrified by the news. ”My sister.” It seemed all he was capable of saying, his voice thick with guilt and dread. He waved his claws a little, uncertain about what to do as he stared hopelessly into his own hands. He bumped his elbow a little clumsily, and hurriedly drew his arms back against his sides.

Quil felt his heart soften. ”We’re going to save them- don’t worry,” he announced determinedly, eyes shining bright with emotion. He was a rescuer- this was what he was born to do!

He glanced up at his partner, eager to inform her on the details of their situation. ”On my way through, I used my webbing to secure their side of the blockage. If we start digging from this side, the rubble should collapse toward us instead of onto the survivors.” He saw the psychic-type brighten, eager to play a role in the rescue effort.

Then, she hesitated, her expression darkening as she looked to the Ursaring. ”Will you let us help them?” Her voice seemed to hold a lot of unspoken meanings, and the veiled threat in her tone did not escape him.

The Ursaring stared hopelessly at her, looking as though he didn’t recognize the Espeon in front of him. ”Save her,” he choked out, looking as though he were about to cry from the stress of it all. ”Please, save Yuuna.” He was pleading, hunched over and perhaps looking more distressed than the Joltik had seen someone be in a very long time.

Glancing at each other, Skye and Quil nodded to each other. Whatever was going on, at least the Ursaring seemed not to be hostile anymore. ”We’ll do our best.” Skye’s voice was much warmer now, filled with an inner strength that Quil had always admired in his partner. There was a reason that she was the team captain between the two of them.

- - - - -

Skye shifted the rubble with her psychic abilities, starting near the top of the blockage and working her way down. At first, she worked at one side, but after a near miss, quickly switched to shifting horizontal layers of stone.

She had to work carefully despite the work Quil had done in securing the area surrounding the missing youth. As she lifted chunks of rock and crystal, she had to mind that she didn’t bump against any other surfaces or section of the debris, and Skye knew that her strength was slowly dwindling. Supporting the caved ceiling had been more than enough energy spent after the fight she’d had with the Ursaring. Still, she couldn’t give in while there were still trapped Pokemon behind the rubble.

That included her partner, she reminded herself silently. Quil had gone back through to bring news of their plan to the others, and to help them prepare if she accidentally knocked loose some of the rubble. All they had to do was clear enough stones to allow the survivors to escape and to allow them the chance of retrieving the injured Poochyena.

The Poochyena’s brother still hovered behind her, staring anxiously at the blockage as though it held his entire world. His demeanor had changed entirely from the righteous fury she’d witnessed before. Now, he was just an older brother who feared for his sister’s life.

As she pulled away another stone, she spotted a flash of silvery fur. A terrified Minccino popped through the newly-formed gap and into the open air, his tiny paws practically flying over the ground as he darted from the tunnel. In less than a few seconds, the Normal-type was out of the cramped side tunnel and out of sight.

The Ursaring growled, looking very irritated with the Minccino, but did not budge. His sister had yet to come out of there.

Quil popped his head up through the hole his partner had made, gesturing to her with his tiny claws. ”We need a bigger hole to get the Kirlia out, Skye. Can you work downward?” He called, his voice barely audible over such a distance. It was clear that he was nearly screaming even to reach this far.

Skye nodded, and used her psychic abilities to lift the stone he rested on. Satisfied, the Joltik sprang back out of harm’s way as she pulled the rock from the pile. As soon as the stone was gone, the shivering form of a Kirlia floated through. She settled lightly on the ground beside the Ursaring, but flinched away as she recognized him. As she realized the Ursaring had no interest in her, she quickly shuffled to the primary cave tunnel, waiting for her friends to be rescued from the blockage.

Skye leaped up to the hole in the wall of rubble, using her psychic energy to prevent the stones from shifting where she stepped. As she rounded the top, she spotted the Poochyena at the base of the pile below her, a little Zigzagoon crouched nervously beside her friend’s head. Wordlessly, the Espeon set immediately to shifting rocks around the dark-type, trying to relieve the weight of the rocky blockage as quickly as she could. It made her descent more difficult, but she would rather relieve the weight that currently pinned the young canine before it left permanent damage.

As soon as she was able, the Poochyena slipped free with a yip of relief. Her leg was battered, but unbroken. She would walk again, though it could not support much weight until it healed.

”Thank you- thank you both!” she exclaimed gratefully, weeping with relief at her newfound freedom. She still shook with fear, but she was happy that she wasn’t trapped alone. The Zigzagoon bumped her shoulder with an affectionate headbutt, and the Poochyena leaned on her friend for support as Skye helped them up to the top of the rock pile.

A growl erupted from behind them, and all three girls were frozen to the spot. The tiny passage from behind the group of survivors seemed to crack, splitting outward from the center. Then, as a filthy green claw ripped through the crystals in its way, a figure burst out of the hole which seemed far too small for its great body.

Quil, now clinging to Skye’s shoulder, stared in horror at the monstrosity they now faced.

It might’ve been a Tyranitar at one point, but it appeared to be missing a good chunk of its face. Bloodstains marred its green hide, deep scars crisscrossing along its belly and shoulders. There was a sort of crazed malice in its eyes, and a grim-set expression that made her stomach twist with fear.

”Get out.” Her voice was sharp and urgent, and the two girls needed no further warning to sprint over the rubble to safety.

The beast leaped at them with a snarl of defiance, and the screaming Zigzagoon shot out through the hole in the blockage. The Poochyena, eyes wide with panic, followed. A pair of large fluffy claws pulled her from the other side, drawing her into the safety of her brother’s arms as they fled to the main tunnel.

Skye charged back, leaping at the scarred Tyranitar with a full-body tackle to take down her opponent. He merely caught her by the shoulders, throwing her back against the rocks. He jumped again, pinning her into a crack between the chunks of crystalline debris, his massive claw pressing hard onto her ribcage. She felt something crack, hissing in pain. She knew her psychic abilities wouldn’t work on him, and that made her situation all the worse, but she had to get out.

Out of nowhere, Quil jumped onto the Tyranitar’s head and clung to the damaged side of his face. He crunched down on the old injury, trying his best to distract and injure the beast that would harm his precious partner. It roared in anger, thrashing as it clawed at its face to remove the protective Joltik.

Skye watched for a moment, stunned, as Quil deftly leaped out of harm’s way. The Tyranitar, lacking the sensory nerves on his scarred face to detect the missing attacker, continued to thrash.

Taking the opportunity, Skye heaved her injured form off of the rocks. Sections of rubble began to shine brightly with psychic energy, lifting from the pile. Sharpe chunks of rock and crystal seemed to tremble in the air for a moment, the Espeon struggling to maintain her strength as she heaved them upward. Then, with a defiant cry, she thrust the rubble toward her enemy.

The noise was awful, shaking the tunnel as the rocks tumbled down the pile, smashing against the far wall of the tunnel. Skye pounced on her partner, grasping him firmly in her mouth and sprinting for the tunnel enlarged hole into that she’d made to the rest of the tunnels.

The rocks followed them.

The Tyranitar’s rock slide chased them out, building speed and force as the injured rescuer tried vainly to escape the dangerous dark-type behind her. Between herself and Quil, they were thoroughly disadvantaged in that fight. They needed a better vantage point.

Skye leaped into the other side of the blockage, darting hurriedly to the side as she raced into the main tunnel. The tunnel mouth exploded with debris, and the group of young Pokemon beside her trembled with fear and awe as she joined them.

The Tyranitar rushed out of the passage, chunks of rock and dust still clinging to his green armor, and his heavy body cracking the solid stone floor with every step. Skye braced herself for a fight, only to watch in shock as the Ursaring jumped into the fray ahead of her.

The giant bear raked his claws across the Tyranitar’s face, leaving gouges across his damaged armor. The beast rammed him in return, and twisted to slam his heavy tail into the Ursaring’s stomach.

The Ursaring toppled instantly, grimacing as his body curled from the force of the strike. He dropped to his knees in the center of the passage, struggling to crawl back toward Skye and the others.

Skye felt a flash of his pain, and the fear of the Pokemon around her nearly choked her senses. She had to finish this- the Ursaring wasn’t strong enough to handle this adversary on his own, and the lives of the group behind her were at stake.

She psyched herself up at a moment’s notice, unleashing a barrage of glittering stars that swiftly punched into the armor of their enemy. She followed the attack, eyes glowing with a synthesis to restore her health. It did very little, buried so far away from the light of the sun, but it gave her strength enough to attack again. A head-on take down slammed into the Tyranitar’s chest, sending the pair tumbling head over tail and into the tunnel wall. Vaguely, she heard her partner scream, and the rocky ceiling came tumbling down for the second time that day.

- - - - -

Quil stared in horror, screaming his partner’s name. A flash of psychic energy shone deflecting the rocks from their group, but he knew from the way it felt that this was not Skye’s doing.

Behind him, the Kirlia floated in a ball of psychic energy. She was strong enough to deflect the rocks away, just as she’d likely done at the first cave-in, but she had little luck in preventing their fall entirely. That was something only a much stronger Pokemon would be capable of. Even so, she was clearly worn out from the effort, panting heavily as her Poochyena and Zigzagoon friends rushed to support her.

Sunlight streamed in from above, the cave ceiling now broken and shattered. Gaping holes were left where the largest chunks of rock had fallen, and it was clear that the multiple cave-ins had left their mark on the tunnel. They must have been much closer to the surface than the Joltik imagined them to be, though perhaps because they were now much further than the hill than they had been on first entering the caves.

A rumble was heard as the Ursaring crawled out from the rubble that had fallen on him, the bear Pokemon growling in pain and discomfort. He seemed dazed, glancing around him several times before he registered that his sister was safe. Then, he simply sat in place, and Quil felt a pang of guilt. He wasn’t exactly innocent, but he’d certainly suffered a lot today.

Not as much as Skye had.

The thought was sobering, and the little Joltik stared hopefully at the pile of rock where his partner had fallen. There was no way- she would have come out by now, right? He trembled a little, worried for her sake, only to have a very different fear realized as a beam of light ripped through the debris and upward into what remained of the cave ceiling above it.

The tall, imposing figure of the Tyranitar appeared through the dust, accompanied by the shining light of its hyper beam.

A second bright light flashed behind the beast, glowing a soft yellow-green that seemed to merge with the light of the sun. The Espeon, recharged by the sun’s energy, slammed into the dark-type once again. Psychic energy swirled around the pair, grabbing rocks and smashing them fiercely against the Tyranitar’s head and torso. The rubble seemed to be pulled from everywhere, even flying overhead to strike against the Tyranitar’s armor.

Gradually, the dragon-like beast was weakened, falling to his knees as he was helpless against the barrage of attacks. He couldn’t move- his own attack had ensured that.

As Skye twisted around to face her opponent again, a final chunk of rock was dropped promptly onto the top of the Tyranitar’s head. His jaw was slammed into the ground, the dangerous beast toppling onto the broken tunnel floor. His eyes rolled, and judging from the blood that seeped around his mouth, he’d bitten his tongue on impact.

The Espeon moved forward, pushing the rock off her opponent’s head, and grimaced. He was alive, certainly, but she’d given him a rather serious concussion. She’d been hoping to avoid this sort of battle.

Quil was much less concerned with the state of their enemy.

With a squeak of relief, a tearful ball of gold leaped onto the Espeon’s shoulder, nuzzling her white-and-lavender fur. ”Skye!” he sobbed, holding tightly to his partner. He wasn’t letting go of her, not again.

The Espeon rolled her shoulder, lifting him closer to her face as she nuzzled him back. She was exhausted, but she could express nothing but relief in return. Her partner was safe, as were the others. That was all that mattered.

- - - - -

The Sentret, Clefairy, Minccino, and Kirlia were quickly reduced to sobbing as they were reunited, not giving the rescue team a moment's glance or interest. As it turned out, none of them were particularly close to the Poochyena and her brother, primarily due to his fiery temper.

The other group, consisting of the Ursaring, Poochyena, and the Zigzagoon, simply sat together in the dappled sunlight near the newly-formed entrance to the cave. The collapsed cave section had to be rebuilt and secured, but for now it was a convenient passage into the lower tunnels. They rested, patiently sitting at Skye's side while she waited for the guild to answer her request for help in dealing with the Tyranitar.

Although Quil had encased the massive beast in layers of electrified webbing, and his concussion had yet to fade, neither rescuer felt confident in leaving him at the cave. It would be safer for everyone if the guild dealt with him. Unfortunately for them, that involved a long time to wait.

”Next time you run into something like this, send word to the guild. We have a mercenaries division that could have handled this before people got hurt. Taking matters you’re your own hands is risky.” Skye’s voice was not unkind, but her temper flared a little from the pain in her own head. Quil deduced that she too was the less-than-proud owner of a concussion.

The Ursaring flinched guiltily, nodding, and his Poochyena sister stared up at him. She gave him a half-smile for comfort, but still frowned. ”You’re an idiot, you know that?” she scolded lightly, trying to make light of the situation. Her injured leg was bound tightly in spider’s silk.

The Espeon purred in amusement, taking a bite of the flatbread she’d packed earlier. She would have to leave the lecturing to her superiors. While Quil ensured that the Tyranitar was safely bound in electrified silk, as well as hung securely from a nearby tree to prevent escape, she was taking a moment to recuperate.

The group of children, it seemed, had lied about their task down in the tunnels. There was no mining, much as she'd admittedly suspected. In a cave filled with precious gemstones, it made little sense for them to search for them in such a dangerous place.

They’d gone after the monster as a joke, trying to prove their courage and take risks as many young Pokemon often did. Yuuna, the Poochyena and her Zigzagoon friend had gone to head them off once they learned the truth, only to be sealed in with them when Yuuna’s brother tried to prevent the Tyranitar from reaching the rest of the cave system.

It was a long list of mistakes and misunderstandings, she realized, but the danger had been very real.

That was often how it worked, really, though she wished that any number of those Pokemon had called upon the guild more honestly. There was a lot of distrust for the guild here, but hopefully she and Quil had done some good today. They had secured the safety of the missing Pokemon, brought down a very dangerous enemy, and helped solidify a more positive reputation of the guild.

Beaming, a tiny Joltik jumped onto her shoulder, squirming a little as he stretched to nibble on her afternoon snack. Skye allowed this, amused as the Joltik bit into the strawberry she lifted from their rations kit.

Serrin, Rescue Leader

Serrin would arrive personally with help in tow from the mercenary section of the guild. He would stop to look at the Tyranitar for a moment before heading towards Skye and Quil. As he walked towards them, the group he had brought quickly set to work reinforcing the silk that was keeping the beast tied together. Some sort of dust was carefully spread over its face by a pokemon with a pinched nose. It wasn't quite clear what the guilds were going to do with it but it was very much clear that they were taking care of it.

"Not bad. It came up from the areas below?" Serrin got the abridged version of what had happened, the ending to which he nodded. If he recognized Skye, he didn't say anything about it. "Good job. Head home whenever you're ready and get yourself looked at when you return. But next time, run. It's the guild's job to take care of these things, not the rescuers. If you had been a little less lucky, they would have been the last ones you ever saved." Although his wording was hardly gentle, he didn't speak it as a scolding or a reprimand. It was a warning and a very important one at that. Skye should have run and come back with reinforcements. Whatever lives might have been lost had to be weighed against the lives Skye could save in the future and that was a heavy weight indeed.

Regardless of how Skye reacted to what she was reminded, she would receive her reward not long after from her Client. It was a Dazzling Gleam TM in addition to the promised PD. It was quite a rare and powerful TM, perhaps in recognition of how very dire the mission was.

Later on, well past the time at which Skye and Quil would return to the guild, they would be met by two waves of recruits. The latter would come bearing permission for Team Sunstrike to take a second recruit should they have opted to accept someone from the first.

The first group of arrivals would contain a number of familiar faces including Yuuna as well as her Sentret, Clefairy and Zigzagoon friends.

The second group of arrivals would be made up of pokemon that the team had never met before, but they were those who had heard of the team's exploits all the same. A Teddiursa, apparently a relative of the Ursaring, as well as a Sneasel, Bunnelby and Dedenne who had heard of the team's exploits.

It would be up to Sunstrike to reject or accept those that they wished to.

Mission Rewards!
- 2 MP
- 750 PD
- ??? TM (Dazzling Gleam)
- Recruit list as above
- Bonus! Second recruit list, as above.

Skye & Quil

The Espeon nodded, explaining what had happened in the caves below. She recognized Serrin, though he didn't appear to pay her any personal notice. He was clearly here with business in mind, and less so the personal bonds between guild members. It made her feel a little off inside, missing the closeness of the original guild structure, but it would come in time. They just had to get to know each other again, to trust each other.

Skye dipped her head graciously at the praise, though she flicked her ears at the reminder of her role within the guild. Fighting such criminals was not ordinarily her job- that was the role of a mercenary, not a rescuer. It was a reminder she'd have to heed in future, if more for maintaining good communications with Serrin and the other guild heads than an actual consideration of her safety. They had specialties for a reason, though, and she again nodded, accepting the criticism without remark.

As Serrin stepped away, she watched as her original client drew near. The Clefairy seemed anxious around the powerful guild team, but she was quite happy to have her friends back where they belonged. An outstretched arm afforded Skye and Quil their rewards, with a Dazzling Gleam TM being dropped lightly into her paws. A small sum of PD quickly followed, and Skye's ears twitched as Quil thanked her for the generous reward.

This was worth the day's efforts, at least. She tucked their supplies into their rescue kit for safe transport home, and turned to leave once they had bid their goodbyes to the Pokemon they'd worked with that afternoon.

Although several Pokemon would attend the guild later on, with permission slips and requests for employment in hand, Team Sunstrike would have to turn the hopefuls away for the time being. Having just started their new guild career, Skye and Quil weren't quite ready for the expansion of their team unit. They still had a lot to learn about guild work.

It was time. In fact, it was well past time. Not one but two guild-wide missions had happened since they had joined the team, not to mention the lull prior to the first one that had been exacted by the social event. They had been members of the guild for far too long but in spite of that they had yet to do any actual work. The reasons for that were subtle and obvious, respectively; prior to a certain point, it had simply been a lack of trust. Tobias was... strange. Strange was putting it mildly. He had odd habits, his behaviour was incomprehensible and he was defiant enough that it was hard for Jessica to simply trust him to take orders. It's possible that he could have spurred them to undertake work himself, but he never did so. Eventually, the trust between the two formed into something much more tangible but it was before that that Tobias... “acquired' a certain small child. Balerd was undeniably the main problem. They couldn't simply leave an infant in the team room and while it was possible to have such things handled by guild staff, it wasn't the best of ideas to separate such a young child from their parental figure. Balerd was perceptive, but still incapable of such longterm and complex thinking. If Tobias was gone, Tobias was gone and that was a tragedy very much worth screaming and crying over. For the sake of emergencies this could be dealt with and in short periods of time it was fine but this was simply an unacceptable environment in which to undertake a mission.

Thankfully, Balerd did what all infants do: grow up. Time bequeathed a certain degree of understanding and linguistic skills upon the bird. Simple demands could now be voiced and ideas could be understood. If Tobias said “I will be back soon”, Balerd could understand that. Even more than that, Tobias had, somehow, met and made fast friends with another team who had similarly aged children of their own. Jessica had no idea how it had happened and Tobias was exceedingly abstruse in regards to what had happened, though he spoke candidly in stating that ,“One of them would rather give his life than allow harm” which was perhaps the most glowing recommendation that a babysitter could receive. And that was most certainly what they were going to be, because it was a great deal more sensible than simply leaving Balerd with guild staff.

Of course, Tobias's handling of Balerd as well as the nature of the previous guild-wide mission had done some decent things to deal with the former issue as well.

It was with this being the case that Team Robin set about the process of claiming their first real mission. Jessica declared her intent. Tobias agreed and Balerd was talked down quickly enough with the claim that they would “be back very soon.” The two left for the bulletin board, perused the missions available and came to a quick and easy agreement.

"They're coming for it--I know it! My precious gem... You have to make sure no one else finds it!"

It was a strange sort of request for a treasure hunter but it was more suitable than the alternatives. The strangeness of it, perhaps, was best explained by the various little bits ticked on the back: extremely urgent and overnight. A brief description noted the client's sapphire eyes. It was a dire emergency, or at least the client certainly thought that was the case. No matter how strange it was, it paid well and was ultimately much more appealing than the alternatives; they had little interest in babysitting some amateur “treasure hunters” and even less in pursuing pointless rumour. They retrieved the mission, confirmed it with the guild staff and went about their preparations. For Tobias, this simply meant seeing to it that Balerd was in good hands for the night. For Jessica, this meant retrieving her belt, adjusting the contents and then double-checking them to make sure things were fine. For an overnight stay in the Glitter Caves, she needed relatively little. She could pack lightly, since many of her tools would be useless in such an environment. She only needed food and some water to keep her going, as well as some basic supplies in order to rest at night. She suspected she would get very little rest but that was all the more reason to be prepared; little good rest was better than no rest at all. She packed extra for Tobias. Her last bit of preparation was to tie the green guild ribbon around her neck.

Once Tobias returned, the contents of each individual pouch were confirmed and the check list was gone over verbally. There was no point in preparedness if they failed to truly prepare and the best way to make sure that didn't happen was to have both of them contribute. Tobias fully agreed to what Jessica had prepared and he ultimately had nothing to add. He did, however, praise Jessica for her sense of caution and preparedness. Or at least as close as it got to praise with Tobias, “You are most prepared.

He was hard to figure out. But that wouldn't stop them from departing. The client was waiting for them and they needed to be there.

-----

The Glitter Cave. It was a strange place, to put it mildly. In ages past, it had been a mine for precious things of great power. They were of the sort that brought out great changes in some and great power in others. They were gems and crystals that contained the raw essence of flame and thunder and they were extremely valuable because of it. In times past, the caves had supposedly been teeming with all varieties of creatures seeking out jewels for themselves, for loved ones and for profit. It had been a bustling area rife with uneasy peace and awkward agreements that bent at a whim.

Of course, it was all those things. That was far from the case now. The gems and crystals had been taken. What was once a natural resource of wealth and magical plunder had been stripped bear. The natural balance of the area had been disturbed, bringing about strange and chaotic results, for though the gems and crystals had been stripped from the walls the flawed and unusable stones had not. Energy still boiled within and, at times, lashed outwards. The caves had shifted greatly because of it, creating seemingly impossible tunnels and natural, dangerous traps. It was because of this that the occupants of the cave were so neutral in nature and it was because of this that Jessica watched her surroundings with care. The last thing she needed was to step into an area particularly afflicted by water without realizing it. Had she been something more removed from the raw elemental chaos, as Tobias and the natives were, she could have easily braved the risks. As a fire-type, such areas presented a great danger to her. It went without saying that she was prepared for such risks. She was prepared and she would succeed. It was her job.

The first problem was that they had to track down their conspicuously absent client. The appointed hour had come and past without their client showing up. The only company Team Robin received was the moonlight and the dull glow of the caves themselves. Jessica reached into one of the pouches and pulled out the notice. It seemed sincere and it was urgent. There was only one obvious conclusion to draw. “We're going to go look for the client. He probably got attacked.

Of course.” Tobias's agreement was readily given and sincere.

The caves greeted them dimly. The crystals within, however flawed, still glowed gently from the passive energy that filled the rock. The tunnel brightened and dimmed depending on the amount of energy available. Jessica's tail served as an excellent secondary source of light as the bright flames scattered against the flawed gems. She admired the light coming from her own tail. She was in top form; that was good, she needed to be. They could already hear stumbling and soft shuffling of foot against stone. The caves were alive in a way that they shouldn't have been. The sounds came from all directions at all intensities and in many numbers. There was seemingly no upward or downward limit. The only rule to them is that they were distant. Team Robin was safe, even if they were on edge.

Well, Jessica was. Tobias never seemed to be on edge.

With little choice otherwise, the two of them simply walked. The sound wasn't coming from just one direction and it wasn't close, so pursuing it was fairly pointless. The noise seemed to slip closer and further at random. Instead of hopelessly pursuing it, they simply continued down the paths. It was as the crystals around them dimmed that they ran into the first pokemon they would meet. A random Sableye tumbled through the ceiling and landed unceremoniously on its face in front of them. Jessica reached out, “Hey, are you alright?

But the Sableye quickly got up to his feet, looked about and then ran off only to slip through a dim wall. He wasn't their client, not with his eyes so red. They couldn't find him, so they continued down the path until Jessica let out a sigh. “Lets turn around. If he heads for the entrance he's not going to find us this far down and I'd rather not get lost.

Tobias nodded. “I agree.

They wouldn't make it anywhere near the entrance, not on that night. As the pair headed back up towards the entrance, the sounds would grow louder. And louder. And louder. They soft pitter-patter and rushing would turn into a stampede and it became abundantly clear that it was headed straight for them. Jessica looked around quickly, narrowing down the options available. They could run, but if worst came to worst Tobias could probably carry her much faster than anything that chased them so there was no point in fleeing so soon. There were no side passages they could immediately break into, so there was no way to let it pass them by. There wasn't much of a choice other than to wait for it and to run if needbe.

And run they did. Jessica backed up slightly to give herself as long and as clear a path as possible to see whatever it was coming. Tobias followed suit and the two waited until the first head popped into view. The wonderfully blue eyes filled in any blanks in an instant. His expression was frantic, his gait was exhausted and rushed. Every face after the first was little more than a mess against the rest of the crowd. There was easily several dozen Sableye chasing after their client. Jessica and Tobias turned in unison and began to run slowly in the same direction as their client, allowing him to catch up once he overcame the hesitation of getting near strangers. He looked quickly at both Tobias and Jessica as he approached them, somewhat relieved to see them.

We're the guild members here for your mission. What the hell is going on?” Jessica looked back at the pursuers. Eyes aside, they didn't look all that different from the client. Their pace was hurried and each step they took expressed an exhaustion that was beaten out only by the desperation on their faces. Outpacing them was pretty easy; they were just too tired to run very fast.

That wasn't quite the case for their client who had been running for longer than any single one of his pursuers. With shaky hands and shaky arms, he stumbled slightly sideways to get closer to Jessica and he quickly shoved a gem into her hands. “Take this, keep it safe. Don't let them take it. I'll find you when I can.

Just as suddenly as they had all met, they broke off from one another. The Sableye took a sharp and sudden turn into another passage and much of the crowd turned off with him. A few of the sharper sort kept after Jessica and Tobias, but after she passed the gem to Tobias they quickly outran the remaining pursuers. A few turns later and she was comfortable enough to come to a stop. There was movement but it was distant and unfocused. They were safe for the time being, safe enough at least for Jessica to turn to Tobias. “Give it back, I want to take a look at it.

Tobias, somewhat regretfully, spat the gem out onto his hands and wiped it off before handing it to Jessica. She curled her tail around to bring proper light to the gem she held in her hand. It was a bit smaller than the size of her fist, or more simply said it was huge. It was beautiful to boot. God, it was beautiful. It sparkled wonderfully and it was seemingly without flaw. Rotating the gem caused it to shift gently between blue and violet, depending on how the light struck it. It was easily worth a house. Tobias stared at it just as intently as Jessica did and spoke only in a whisper, “How wonderful.

It's not ours.” Jessica shook her head. No matter how much it was worth, those kinds of things were just dreams. They had been entrusted with it. She was tempted to double back and leave the caves in an effort to escape the wandering Sableye, but she had a strong feeling that that wouldn't be possible. They had heard movement from the moment they entered. There was a good chance that they had been expected and that their client had been cut off trying to get to them. That left them with only one choice: stay in the cave, guard the gem, meet up with the client later. They were prepared for it and they had known it was coming. The mission was marked overnight for a reason.

There's no chance you'll swallow this?

Tobias shook his head. “Oh no, I am most skilled at holding things within my cheeks. It will be quite safe.” Jessica stared for a moment, hoping in the back of her mind that Tobias was being honest as he shoved the gemstone back into his mouth.

With that done... Well, they had to figure out what to do. It wasn't as simple as it sounded. They needed to stay in the caves, probably until the next day. Since they had shaken off their pursuers, they were fine for the time being but that wouldn't be the case forever. The fact that they were the new target would probably spread the moment their client was found without the gem. They had no understanding of the cave systems, they had no map, they had no contacts and they didn't really have a way of telling the time. The only thing they had was time, time to better their situation before they were being pursued and before they were found.

Well... no matter how she looked at it, their current spot was far from ideal. The tunnel they had turned into had too many openings. It was fairly tall and wide, with strange crystals jutting from the walls and open passageways along the walls. It was a good place to get ambushed. She gently shifted back and forth from foot to foot as she thought. ...It's smooth. Jessica dropped to her hands and felt the stone below her. It was smooth, but only near the middle. The edges were still bumpy and relatively uneven. She couldn't see it in the dim lighting, but she could just barely feel it. She was on a well-worn path, or at least what passed for “well-worn” in a cave. “Come on, we're going this way.

Jessica started down the path. It winded, turned and occasionally broke off into smaller tunnels. Every turn, she would have to take a few steps back and feel carefully along the floor in order to figure out which way the path had gone. It was an easy process and the only length in it was in Jessica's strides as she walked down the path quickly. There wasn't time to waste, the longer she waited the more likely they were to be attacked without finding anything to work with.

The tunnel remained slim and narrow but it suddenly sloped downwards and opened up into an artificially made cavern. Pokemon were moving about freely and simple homes had been erected within the open area. There were more than just a few pokemon moving about, it was definitely a small civilization in its own right. It was also one they weren't going to get into, judging by the grumpy looking Snubbull who was standing right at the edge of the path. He was a guard if his words, “No entry!” were any indicator.

Jessica stared. She hadn't even gotten a chance to talk before being yelled at. It didn't put her in an exactly... good mood but she was at least willing to feign courtesy in order to get what she needed. “We're guild members, we were just looking--

No entry!” The Snubbull repeated his shout, this time with a growl.

Jessica bit her tongue but started again. “We just need a little help making our way around the--

No entry! Not until the festival starts! Come back tomorrow!

Festival? What festival? Does this have something to do with the Sableye running--

The Snubbull once again began to shout his by-now signature phrase, except he himself was the one that was cut off this time. “Oh calm your s**t Greg. They're obviously lost.

The slightly grey Poochyena that popped up behind “Greg” was seemingly only slightly more welcome and the two quickly began squabbling. “No outsiders!

Greg, they're not trying to get in. They're trying to get some help.

They can get it somewhere else! No entry, the elders said so!

The Poochyena sighed. “Greg, they're not trying to get in. Calm down.” The Poochyena looked away from Greg and towards Jessica and Tobias. “Lemme guess. You're the pair that Jer' hired? He's a Sableye with blue eyes. You've still got his rock? It's blue-violet, yeah?

Tobias looked at Jessica who, after taking the moment to try to analyze the Poochyena, nodded. Tobias promptly reached into his mouth and pulled the gem out of his cheek and held it up for a moment before quickly shoving it back in.

See? They're just here because they're lost. They're not here to take any of the rocks, calm the hell down.

Greg snorted. “Then they don't need in! No entry!

The Poochyena rolled his eyes. “Fine Greg, whatever. I'll help them myself.” The Poochyena stepped past both Greg and team Robin. “Lets go, I'll help you out. Greg's stuck too far up his own a*****e to let you in.” Greg snorted in defiance of the label but he didn't move or act as the now-trio headed in the opposite direction of the village. “Anyways...” The Poochyena started talking after they were far enough away to be out of earshot. “My name's Joshua. You?

Jessica. He's Tobias. We're team Robin. Mind explaining what's going on?” She wasn't quite sure how to handle the Poochyena yet. They weren't exactly a trustworthy species and there was always the chance that he was just leading them into a trap. He knew who they were which meant he held equally great capacity to help or harm them. It was still worth it. If he tried something, they could handle it. If he helped them, then they had gained something they couldn't otherwise.

Yeah, no problem.” Joshua calmly lead the way through tunnels and turns as they talked. “So, simple version, you got caught up in a wedding ceremony.” “A wedding?” “Yeah. Long and short of it, when the princess hits the age for marriage she's dropped on the highest bidder. Whoever can bring the best gem gets her, no questions asked. Her birthday is tomorrow. Whoever can bring the best rock after dawn breaks gets her hand and becomes the crown prince. There's no rules on it, so the night before is a huge frenzy. Apparently a couple of people die every year. It's a real pain in the a**. It tanks the city for about a month while things get back to normal. Or so I've heard anyways, I was pretty young the last time it happened. Anyways, everyone agreed that no foreigners are allowed in the City during the last week, Sableye included. A couple of generations ago there was a huge rampage when people went hunting for gems, and each other, in the city.

So it's a wedding ceremony. The Sableye would stop pursuing them if they lost the gem, which was good. What was less good is that if they tried to hold onto it while being swarmed they could get killed if they were careless. They would have to be careful. Facts and tunnels were nestled firmly in Jessica's mind as she considered what to do. She wasn't about to get lost. “Where are we headed?

The empty tunnels. They've been mined out. We're less likely to run into anyone there, it should be a good place to hole up for now.” Joshua yawned lazily, apparently not taking this seriously at all. Jessica nodded, since at the very least it made sense. “Anyways, if you can stick it out until day breaks you should be fine. The sunlight will work its way down the junk crystals, so when it gets real bright you'll know. When it's too close to the deadline, most of them will probably just try their luck with what they have instead of keeping on you. Well, you'll lose too if you're too slow, since she'll only wait about an hour to receive the best available. If you're late, she'll take somebody else.

They were on a time limit, too. Great—just what she wanted, a time limit. It was a time limit she had no way to fulfill since she didn't even know where to go at the time. They needed to hide, but they needed to find a way back... It was a problem. They also only had one source of information, which was even worse. All it took was a mistake or a lie on Joshua's part and they were screwed. Jessica disliked the situation, to put it mildly. “Any advice on finding our way to the princess?

Nah, you're pretty much screwed there.Well that was... blunt.I'll probably bail in an hour or two, I'm mostly just helping out. I'd rather not get caught up in things when it gets bad. But advice...” Joshua paused in thought before continuing. “You're less likely to get found in dark areas but less likely to be ambushed in bright ones. They can move through the rocks but the energy in the walls messes them up. Their home is in the brighter areas, so the brighter it gets the more likely they are to be nearby but the less likely they are to be able to pop out of a wall.” Joshua's speech lapsed. Jessica was going to prompt him to say more but he looked like he had something on his mind; he did. “I scratch your back, you scratch mine. Do me a favour, look after Jer'. He's a good guy, really eager. He's also not exactly the... sharpest tool in the shed, if you know what I mean. Even if you guys pull through for him, this isn't gonna end the best for him. Lets just say uh... Well, I'm a pretty open guy when it comes to the ladies but I wouldn't touch the princess and it's not because she's a Sableye or because she's a princess.” Jessica looked at him with renewed curiousity and lessened caution. Her opinion of him had changed quite a bit, he seemed like a decent guy. It all seemed a little too heartfelt to be a con. “Well... Lets just say you'll understand if you meet her. Words won't do it justice.

Jessica nodded, having decided to trust Joshua for the time being. “I'll do what I can. I can't promise you anything but I'll do what I can.

Joshua nodded in return. “Thanks. I'll stick around as long as it's safe. I'll see if I can find you in the morning but no guarantees, these tunnels are pretty complicated.

Jessica went over what she knew in her mind, having settled on trusting the Poochyena enough to leave the navigation to him. If he was lying to them it probably wasn't about the situation which just meant that they were safe if they could make it through the night. They had enough food to last them a little bit. They just needed to run into somebody to get help if they were really lost. Other than that, dark areas were good to hide in but light areas were good to run towards. Ditching the gem, or making it seem like they had, was a good idea as an absolute last resort. If they tossed it and surrendered to any other Sableye they ran into they would be ignored since there was no point in harassing them for a gem they didn't have. Most likely, they'd be being pursued fairly soon. It was just a guess, but there was a fair chance a lot of the Sableye had collapsed by now. The late risers who were hoping to snatch the gem up at the last moment would be moving soon and not long after that the ones who had failed before would be stirring again with renewed vigor. This was their last chance to hide and prepare.

Joshua came to a slow stop. Jessica's tail had become the only meaningful source of light in the tunnel. The crystals around them were barely active and the complete lack of sunlight meant they were deprived of the energy that coursed through the stone during the day. It was as dark as it got. “We're here. They're not gonna look here until they get desperate.

Alright... It was time to plan. They were in a fairly large area with lots of branching paths which was no good, it was too easy to find them. Jessica took her tail in hand and looked down each of the passageways until she finally settled on one after seeing a sizable rock that had been left behind. The tunnel walls were covered in a faint moss and, fortunately, it didn't dead-end so they could retreat in either direction if needed. Jessica placed her hand against the rock and felt along it slowly, carefully.

What's up?

Quiet. I need to focus.” Joshua closed his mouth and Jessica began to breathe slowly and deeply. She felt out the shape of the boulder, closed her eyes and stepped back. Utter silence settled into the area until Jessica raised her fists. Silence brought about questions that were silenced quickly as faint flickers of orange and green gathered around Jessica's hands. They slowly became brighter and more constant until the flicker had turned into a constant glow and it was at that point that she lunged forward. Her arm straightened, her shoulder shifted forward and her entire body turned with the punch as her foot scraped the floor.

Joshua whistled. “Damn.

The awe in Tobias's voice showed that he was no less surprised. “Oh my.

The energy gathered around Jessica's fist had shot into the rock and spread through it, causing the entire boulder to crumble into pieces. Each piece was about the size of her hand which was perfect. “Tobias, scatter these on both sides of the tunnel. Leave a path through the middle that's clear.

Alright.” Tobias quickly set to fulfilling Jessica's request without any annoyance or questions in spite of the seemingly mundane and pointless nature of the task. It left her scratching her head and feeling a little bad. When they had met, she had thought he would bring her nothing but trouble. Even going into the mission, she was somewhat apprehensive about his... unpredictable nature. In spite of that, he had been nothing but helpful and obedient. If it had been a better place or a better time, she would have asked but it was neither.

Jessica reached towards her belt and began to pull out supplies. Food, water and her blanket. It wasn't exactly a glamorous meal, being nothing more than salted and pressed fruit, but the bars were convenient to transport and a good source of energy. “Tobias.” Jessica held out a bar which Tobias simply grabbed with his mouth and set to eating. “What about you, Joshua?

I'll pass.” Joshua yawned widely. “I'm gonna nap.

Alright.” Jessica was planning to do the same herself. “Tobias, can you keep watch?

Tobias twisted around to face Jessica. “Hm... I believe I will tire in a few hours. I will most likely not be able to stay ahead of the Sableye without rest, but for now I am well.

...It wasn't an ideal answer but it was as good a one as she could hope for. “Wake me up in a little if anything happens or if you start to feel tired.” Jessica wrapped the blanket around her body, leaned against the wall and nodded off into a somewhat uncomfortable rest.

What awoke her was a somewhat hurried shaking. Tobias was right in front of her and he had a solid grip on her shoulders that he released as soon as she began to flail in surprise. “They are coming. We do not have long.

The back of Jessica's eyes ached and her senses were dulled as she struggled to wake herself up. She could hear them now that she wasn't being shaken anymore. Her senses and mind lit up and she quickly and methodically retrieved everything. She brushed the moss off the blanket with an expression of disgust and then quickly folded it and stored it back in the pouch from her waist. She half-noticed out of the corner of her eye that the moss had all retreated from where she had touched the stone but, while interesting, it wasn't something she had time to examine. What was left of the water-holding skins were shoved back into place and everything. In mere moments she had collected everything. And then all there was left to do was wait. She glanced down both ends of the tunnel and nodded to herself when she saw the well-spread stones. Joshua had woken up with a lazy yawn.

And then they waited. They could hear the movements of the Sableye not far in the distance but team Robin stayed put. There was no point in getting spotted sooner. With slow breaths and ready ears, they waited.

The first sign was the glint of red eyes in the darkness. Tobias dropped to the ground and his fur bristled in defiance but as more and more eyes became visible, he quickly abandoned his posture and sprinted after Jessica and Joshua who had already begun running. All three quickly funneled through the middle of the path and then continued onwards with Joshua taking the lead. Jessica glanced back and felt satisfaction that was quickly proved premature. The “trap” she had set had caused the Sableye to stumble over both the rocks and one another but the ruckus caused by their movements and the shouting had quickly brought more to their tail and a few in front.

Tobias zipped forward and, in one smooth motion, leapt towards a Sableye and jumped off it to send the poor thing hurtling to the ground. The moment Tobias landed, he bolted forwards once more and forcibly grabbed a Sableye by the hands only to twirl him about and send him reeling into a wall as he struggled to maintain his step. A third was poked in the stomach playfully and then slapped upside the head.

Jessica, frankly, had no idea how the hell Tobias was doing any of that but she was never one to question good things needlessly. At least not when she was being chased. She glanced behind her at the mass of Sableye that was slowly increasing in size. Her gaze snapped over to Joshua when he started yelling at her.

Hey! Pass me the gem, I'll take it from here!” He had only barely stopped yelling when he mouthed. fake it. Jessica intentionally shoved her hand downwards towards the pouches at her belt, “fumbled” around for a moment and then shifted closer to Joshua to “pass” him the gem. With the quick act complete, Joshua suddenly changed course and shot down a tunnel on the side. The crowd of Sableye behind them got confused and either got trampled in their indecision or they split up. A fair few were following but it was no longer a massive group and, with some luck, Joshua would siphon off some pursuers.

Tobias was running towards her. Why was Tobias running tow--Ah, hell...

In front and behind. When forwards and backwards were both bad, the only way was sideways. Jessica had no choice but to plant her foot against the round and turn sharply. Her feet moved her quickly. The ground suddenly fell away from under her foot and Jessica's stomach lurched as she realized she had stepped onto a harsh slope. Her balance collapsed under her and she went tumbling down, her body turning, skidding and bouncing off the ground until she finally came to a stop at the bottom. Her head swirled and her body ached from where her muscles had contorted strangely. She forced herself to stand on discipline alone; she needed to look around, she needed to plan. The slope would afford her a moment's time; she needed to figure out what to do in that moment.

The cave had opened up into a cavern. And not just any cavern, it was an exceedingly abnormal one. The wall were glowing, sparking and crackling. Platforms of stone floated through the air, forming a path towards a ledge further up. Was it magnet--No, no that doesn't matter, how can I use this? Her eyes studied the platforms with careful intent as Tobias slid down the slope not far behind her. “Can you stall them for a few seconds?

...I will do what I can.

Not a yes or a no. It was enough. Jessica ran towards the platforms and carefully pushed her foot down against the first one. It was sturdy, sturdy enough for her to run across them and jump from platform to platform. So she did. She leapt forwards and ran from platform to platform, occasionally having to stop to grab onto the edge of one and pull herself up. Her progress only came to a halt when one of them suddenly wobbled under her, sending her balance askew and causing her to fall on the middle. Jessica scrambled back to her feet and carefully tested it. It was perfect. She shouted, “Tobias!” before closing her eyes and breathing deeply.

You just need to put your mind into it was what her father had always told her. If you think properly and act properly, you can do anything. Anything.

She felt Tobias' fur brush past her and her fist came smashing down. The platform cracked and suddenly began to tilt and slip as it lost its balance, sending both the now-stray fragment and the remainder of the platform hurtling to the ground. Jessica turned in place and pushed off with both of her feet as hard as she could, only to miss her mark. Her force came up short. The platform had cracked but she couldn't jump that high. For a brief moment, time seemed to freeze as she desperately reached upwards to grasp at the ledge before falling.

The next thing she felt was the feeling of fur, the next thing she heard was a grunt of exertion and the next thing she saw was her entire body being sent hurtling over Tobias. And then she slammed into the stone, safe and sound. Tobias was panting and lying down belly-up. “You must really be more careful.

Haha, I'll try.

She had a good partner. It brought a smile to her face.

But there was no time for rest, no matter how much they wanted it. They took only the time to suck the air back into their lungs before they finished working their way up the last few platforms. The Sableye were dispersing. Some had given up. The jump was too much for any of them to make. Others would find their way around and try to trap team Robin, but Jessica and Tobias would be long gone courtesy of a new found guide.

Hey!” The Sableye met them just moments after they made it up the top. His large, blue eyes spoke well. He seemed fairly well rested... he must have taken some time to sleep after he got dealt with. He had certainly had the time.

Hey, you found us!

Yeah! Do you still have the gem?” Tobias, somewhat slowly, spat the gem out and held it up before shoving it back into his cheeks. “Great! Lets get somewhere safe.” So, with their Sableye client in the lead, the three began walking as information was exchanged between team Robin and their client. He would slowly lead them towards a brightly lit, relatively tight tunnel but not before they had finished speaking for the most part.

My name's Jessica. His is Tobias. We're team Robin.

My name's Jeremiah. I'm surprised you guys are still doing alright without any help!

Jessica shook her head. “We ran into Joshua. He helped us a lot, we probably wouldn't have managed without him.

Ah, yeah, Joshua. He's a great guy. Is he uh... is he still around anywhere?

Jessica, once more, shook her head. “He broke off, he said he'd try to come find us in the morning but that he couldn't guarantee anything.

Ahh, yeah, yeah. He would, he's a great guy but he knows when to get going, you know?

Jessica settled down onto the ground as Jeremiah came to a stop. It was low, small, out of the way and bright. It was good, if a little irritating. The light was harsh on the eyes, especially eyes that so badly wanted to shut and sleep. But she resisted the urge. She had already had her rest and the ache was slowly setting into her body. The amount of running and tumbling had worn her down. Even if she slept, at this point, she wasn't going to do them a lot of good. “It's your turn, Tobias.

Tobias nodded, pulled the gem out of his cheek, dried it off quickly on his fur and then handed it solidly to Jessica. Jeremiah watched, obviously wanting to hold the gem. “Hey, how about I hold onto it? You two are tired, right? I'll keep watch.

No.” Jessica kept the surprise out of her expression as Tobias shot back a denial. “Jessica will hold onto it. It is our job to protect it until you reach the princess, is it not?

Jeremiah smiled and laughed awkwardly. “Yeah, yeah I guess so. Go ahead then, but I'll still keep an eye out. I should be able to make sure they stay away, since they don't know you're here.

Please do.” She wouldn't sleep, not as long as she had the gem, but she could at least relax a bit. Eat, drink. She pulled out the food she had and the remaining half of the water along with the blanket. What was left was consumed and the blanket was draped over Tobias who gratefully went to sleep.

After that was waiting. A lot of waiting. Jessica got up and stretched occasionally. She went over what had happened. She counted the crystals on the wall, she looked at them for imperfections. Jeremiah came back and forth and was a somewhat poor conversation partner. The Sableye never got close enough to be a problem. Jessica had nothing to do but stay awake in spite of her aches, pains and exhaustion. She didn't even know what time it was. Hopefully the end was soon.

Eventually, Tobias awoke and the two changed places. Jessica slept a little more while Tobias stayed awake.

It was once more that Jessica was rudely awaken by necessity. “We gotta go, they've found us!” The hands shaking Jessica's shoulders soon relented and she was left blinking and staring. It was bright, it was bright as hell. The crystals were shining in here eyes and she couldn't tell if it was because they had brightened or if it was just because she had been asleep. Either way, it was a less-than-pleasant thing to be confronted by but she struggled through it. The ache in her body had set in but she quickly and methodically folded the blanket once more before stuffing it into a pouch.

This time, without waiting, they burst out of the tunnel. A group of Sableye noticed them immediately and began running towards team Robin. One of them began shouting, “Traitor!

There was no time to pay mind to it. Jeremiah led them through the tunnels expertly in what was ultimately a losing battle. The Sableye pursuing them seemed well-rested, a fact that harshly contrasted with the exhausted and worn down state of Jessica and to a lesser extent Tobias. Jessica's mind slowly worked as she tried to figure out the best way out of the situation. They needed to create a barrier, they needed something to slow down--It's warm.

The side tunnel was warm. “Jeremiah, Tobias, come this way!” Tobias turned around immediately, shot back and dashed into the tunnel without reservation. “Trust me!” and so, Jeremiah followed suit. Jessica followed up the rear.

The tunnel they slipped into was warm. It was dry. The crystals pulsed with a much different, much warmer light. It felt nostalgic, like home—like her mother. It was only after they made it past the short expanse of warmth that she stopped and put her plan into play. There was no punches, no finesse or skill. Jessica simply blindly bathed the crystals and the air around them in fire.

In no time at all, the tunnel itself began to burn. The warm, glowing crystals flickered to life with the remnants of the energy that had once flooded the tunnel with fire stones. The energy surged outwards and filled the air with fire. Enough that they wouldn't have pursuers. The flames flickered and lashed about wildly. It wasn't a safe area, not for anyone other than Jessica.

It had been a guess but it had been a good one.

Jessica took a moment to wipe off her mouth before turning around. “Lets get going to the princess.

Jeremiah was pleased and more than willing to indulge them on that. The entire walk was a stream of compliments, right up until Jeremiah let on a satisfied smile. “We're here. Just down this tunnel and we'll be in the no-conflict zone, we'll be safe.

I see, I see.” Tobias nodded vigorously, walked up to Jeremiah, planted his front paws on the Sableye's chest and pushed him to the ground. “Your eyes are wrong.

Tobias, what the hell are you doing!?” Jessica shouted at him. Attacking the client wasn't just a problem, it was utterly forbidden. You never crossed the client unless they crossed you first.

But Tobias didn't relent. “His eyes were different. You are not the same Sableye.

Jeremiah, or at least the Sableye who had named himself as such, let out an angry yell and lashed out as Tobias only to have his hand harmlessly slip through the normal type's body. Tobias once more pushed down, this time hard enough to knock the wind out of the blue-eyed liar. Tobias quickly pressed down on the Sableye one last time as he ran forward towards the safe zone with Jessica not that far behind. The sound of a scream echoed behind them. More Sableye came into view, but these ones were clearly adorned in simple regalia. They were guards and they made no move to interfere.

It was all a little bit much to process but there was little to question. The swipe that Tobias had been on the receiving end of was proof of his accusations. They had managed to hold onto the gem for the entire night and they had managed to bring it to the ceremony. Except their client wasn't there and from the looks of it, he never had been. They had accomplished everything they were hired to do... but their client wouldn't actually be able to benefit at all from it. There was nothing they could do about that which left a burning curiousity behind. “How did you know?

His eyes. The client had very clear eyes, very beautiful. I would have loved them for myself.” So it was... just a matter of the eyes. That was subtle and, frankly, impressive. She hadn't noticed the difference at all. “Though I would never take them,” he added.

Hm.

Well... there wasn't anything else they could do but go forward. Tobias pulled the stone out and dried it off in advance as they made their way down the tunnels. It was growing increasingly bright as they went until they finally made their way to a guarded set of double doors. The guards pushed the door open wordlessly upon seeing the gem. What came into view was a brightly lit hall covered in crystal. Guards lined the walls from end to end. A Sableye stood at the end of the hall with a gleeful grin on his face. The princess sat on a throne nearby. She would have looked as a normal Sableye did, if not for her eyes that looked to be diamonds. In her hand was held a gem encrusted scepter that touched the ground.

Present your gem.

The princess spoke and Tobias obeyed by stepping forward and holding the gem up high in the air. Jessica stepped up behind him and, as carefully as possible, began speaking. “We were hired by Jeremiah to help him protect this gem so that he could present it to you. Unfortunately, we were separated over the night. We are team Robin, his name is Tobias and mine is Jessica. We are at your service, Princess.

Hm.” Her tone was short and disinterested but she did clap her hands loudly. “Guards! Remove this one and fetch me Jeremiah. I will hear what he has to say for himself.

Very suddenly, the guards were in motion. Two left. Two more grabbed the Sableye near the throne by the arms and dragged him out. He was no longer grinning and was obviously torn between screaming, crying and begging but, in the end, he settled for simple defeat.

And then they waited. Quietly, patiently. The princess seemed disinterested. Jessica was tense; royalty was always difficult to deal with. Tobias was... well, he was Tobias.

Eventually one of the guards returned with a very confused Jeremiah in hand. He was released from the grip of the guard and he stumbled forward. Tobias stared at him but easily handed him the gem, apparently content that this was the real one. Jeremiah could only look down at it in awe. “Thank you...

Jeremiah! I have been told that this is your gem. Is that true?

Jeremiah nearly jumped out of his skin. “Y-yes! Yes, it is!

How did you come to acquire it?

I found it, Princess. I was searching deep in the tunnels and I managed to find it.

And why were you not here to present it?

I passed it on to them early in the night and tried to act as a decoy but I couldn't find them after. I was still searching when your guards found me.

So then am I to understand that throughout the night, you did nothing to protect your gift to me?

s**tPrincess,” Jessica stepped forward. This was going badly. “We are here only because of Jeremiah's request. We are only present as an extension of his own worth, we aren--

Silence, harlot. I have no interest in your rationalizations.” The princess's eyes narrowed and Jessica stepped back. Pressing it wouldn't help. “Now I shall ask once again. Jeremiah, did you or did you not do anything to see this gem to me safely?

Jeremiah hesitated and swallowed, but spoke honestly. “I tried, but I couldn't. I searched the entire night but I couldn't find them but please, Princess, I did everything I could to--

Silence!” The princess banged her scepter against the ground. “You there1 Tobias. I am sure you did most of the work rather than your feeble companion, did you not? You may take my hand, should you simply present me the gem.

My Lady,” Tobias turned around and carefully took the gem from Jeremiah. Jeremiah's gaze was cast downwards in defeat. “It is said that the eyes are a window into the soul. Clear, beautiful eyes show a pure and beautiful soul. I would be deeply pleased to find love in such eyes. A gem as beautiful as this should only be given to an equally beautiful person.” Tobias slowly walked up to the throne where the princess awaited. “Princess, may I be so bold as to request your lips?

The princess giggled. Her stern and disinterested expression had been tossed aside as quickly as her suitors and she had adopted a bubbly grin in its place. “Well, it isn't proper, but I suppose an exception could be made.” The princess leaned forward slightly, opened her mouth and puckered her lips.

Tobias promptly shoved the gem into her mouth, clamped it shut and held her nose. The entire hall was stunned. The silence was complete aside from Tobias's words. “Your eyes are flawed. Perhaps when the gem comes out the other end it will suit your heart.” The Princess, against her will, quickly swallowed as her body desperately sought out air. Tobias's charm had, quite literally, left her breathless.

As Tobias let go and sprinted towards the front of the hall, the princess was already shouting out orders between her coughs. “Kill them! Kill them all, don't let any of them escape!

Tobias wasted no time in fleeing. Jessica, with Jeremiah in tow, were not far behind. Jeremiah was easily enough shaken to his senses after some quick shouting from Jessica. “They're going to kill us if we don't get out of here! Which way do we go!?

In the end, after traversing many tunnels, the three burst out into the sunlight and freedom. The pursuit had been constant but insufficient; the guards had been no less tired than Jessica and Tobias had been and, since the ceremony had been “finished”, none of the native Sableye bothered them at all. It had been a clear path to the exit. They had been “safe” the moment they made it into the safe zone.

Well, that's one way to finish things.

When the trio of Team Robin and their client made their way into the Main Hall they would find Barcel awaiting them, the Empoleon's arms crossed and his expression one of mild impatience--in other words, exactly what was to be expected of the aged Treasure Hunter Head. "You're back then," he remarked without pretense, "If I recall your mission was supposed to be an overnight one. Did it really take you that long to get back?" Barcel had been awaiting their arrival for a little over an hour now, and he hated to be kept waiting. Waving an arm dismissively before anyone could answer him, the Empoleon stared down at Sableye accompanying Team Robin expectantly. "You. Did these two perform their job to your satisfaction?"

Jeremiah answered without hesitation. "Absolutely. They did all I asked them to and more."

Barcel stared at the Sableye a moment longer before giving a gruff nod. "Right then." Turning back to the members of Team Robin, the Empoleon gave them a grudging smile. "Your client's satisfied, and that's enough for me. You two are still rookies and it shows, but you've done your job well. I'm sure after a few more missions you'll be a force to be reckoned with." That was about the closest thing to praise Barcel could be expected to give, and that was what Team Robin got. If they hadn't managed to get a whole faction of the Glitter Cave's Sableye monarchy angry with the Guild he might have been a bit more impressed, but as things stood currently he had some reports and apologies to be writing--a task which he hated almost more than he hated being pulled away from his smithing for any reason other than Armageddon. Without another word the Empoleon deposited the sack he held into Jeremiah's hands before he turned and strode off down the hall, leaving Jessica and Tobias alone with their client yet again.

Jeremiah turned to the pair after a long pause and offered a tentative smile. "Thanks again for everything," he said, gratitude bleeding into the words and through his lovely blue eyes. "I hope this is enough to compensate you for everything you've done for me." He handed over the bag containing the rewards to them with a nod and then turned to leave. "I'll, ah, be back later with a little something extra." With that, the Sableye slipped off out the door leaving Jessica and Tobias alone with their rewards and one another's company.

Later that evening Team Robin would receive a knock at the door, presumably from Jeremiah with the "extra" that he'd promised. When it was opened, they would find the Sableye as expected carrying something in his hands, but also a familiar Snubbull and...oh god was that a Carbink? It was quickly revealed that the trio each wanted to join the Team for their own reasons (most of which had to do with a decree from the Sableye monarchy forbidding any Pokemon other than Sableye from living in their area of Glitter cave--apparently Tobias had left quite the impression behind him). Unfortunately the Team could only take one, and that Pokemon had to be a proper member, not just a possession of one of the two ball-lovers of the group: it would be a difficult choice, but a decision would have to be made.

Rewards:
-4 MP (Trial Ticket Bonus)
-Star Piece
-700 PD
-Shadow Sneak TM
-Sableye, Snubbull, or Carbink Recruit

Treasure Hunter Bonus:
-Much like Jessica, Jeremiah was prepared for his sleepless night with food to keep his energy up; unlike a Charmander's however, the Sableye's diet consists mostly of gemstones. He happened to have a few left over when they reached the Guild, which he promptly offered to Team Robin in gratitude for their services to him! The stones weren't terribly valuable, seeing as it would be a waste to eat the most precious gems, but altogether they possessed a value of 800PD.

((Nicely done Cy! I really like what you did with this one (though I'm a sucker for lovely rocks and minerals so I was bound to like it) and how much more of Jessica's character was revealed throughout it. Your environment was creative and the Sableye culture was interesting (though it was rather strange that a Snubbull and Poochyena had anything to do with it and I would have liked to know more about that). You had a few moments of awkward language here and there but altogether it was very solid and quite good. The clever ways that you incorporated the moves were exceptionally well done as one last note: I loved both the Focus Punch and the Charm moments, they were very cinematic and felt quite important and relevant to the characters.))

"Oh, yeah. Josh gave me a note, he said you'd want to read it?" Jeremiah reached into the bag and fished around as Jessica hastily chased off the Carbink. He found the slightly crumpled piece of paper in the bottom and handed it to Jessica.

Hey. You guys really ******** things up here, huh? Not that I blame you, I've always thought that Princess needed to go stuff it and I heard you did a pretty good job, hehehe. But Jeremiah might have a bit of a hard time being around after what happened. She's not the type to forgive and forget, you know?

You guys also looked a bit ill-equipped for some dicier situations. It might be time to consider an acquisition specialist for your team, don't you think?

I get the feeling I'll be seeing you around.

Well, Joshua wasn't much else if he wasn't direct. Jessica couldn't really complain about that. Everything he had said within the letter had been implicit but none of it had been subtle, he might as well have just wrote them a letter saying, "Let Jeremiah join your team." but he was entitled to do it his own way. She didn't mind but it wasn't a request she could answer on her own. Even if she was the captain, she didn't have any desire to wield such authoritarian control over the team. She called back into the team room, "Tobias!"

Tobias came running over on his back feet with Balerd held in his front paws. The bird half-chirped, half spoke in greetings. "Hello!"

Jeremiah waved at Balerd, who waved back excitedly with both hands. Jessica watched the exchange. Apparently he already had one approval, but it wasn't the most important one. "Jeremiah wants to join the team, would that be--"

"Of course it would. I would be most happy to have Jeremiah with us."

Jessica nodded. The approval was unanimous, or at least as unanimous as it got. "Greg, I'm sorry but..." She didn't get to finish her sentence before Greg ran off in tears. Poor guy, but this was work. Work he didn't seem like he would do well with. She looked over to Jeremiah who seemed both excited and hopeful. "We'll accept you on a trial basis." The sole dissenting voice was her own. It spoke out to her in the back of her head. I don't know anything about Jeremiah. He seems like a nice guy but I don't know anything about him. I can't guarantee him a spot without knowing more about him. "If you do well on our next mission, you can stay with us. Alright?"

Jeremiah nodded with a smile on his face. His response was full of vigor and an almost naive certainty. "I won't let you down!"
