Part 1 - The Hunt
Sauron felt like his head was going to explode, or his heart, he wasn’t sure which would go first. His worled was crashing around him with a sharp and unforgiving clarity; Kel was in trouble, precious ingredients needed for her health had been stolen. Who in their right mind would steal herbs fom a healer intended for a pregnant woman? That was so far below the worms crawling in the dirt. He clenched his fists against the rage and the tears of frustration stinging his eyes. It was up to him then. The midwife could not go, her expertise was needed here, Kelina was somewhat busy at the moment. Sauron turned and left the house sprinting down the trail pausing now and then to inspect for tracks or sign. He was a fair tracker, not the best, he had been a bit out of practice lately what with the family and all. Now it was imperitive that he remain alert and keen on this task, this wasn’t idly following after some wild radaku, this was hunting down the thieves who risked his wife’s life.
Sauron snarled and doubled his pace, his feet pounding on the dirt, people in the way spread out before him, avoiding the maddened shifter male who seemed to be on the heels of nothing. There was no time to explain, he didn’t care he just tried not to bowl too many people over.
There! A footprint headed off into the bush for no reason...Sauron poked around the area, more footprints , fresh. This must be them. He hoped it was them. Sauron trailed after them looking for any further clues but still moving forward after the tracks always. Soon enough the foots met up and made a clear trail, whoever they were they were more focused on speed then disgression, as well they might be if they thought an irate father was storming after them. He hoped the trees made their progress awful. He would catch up and he would get those ingredients at any cost. He felt like he was burning on the inside with a desire so great it eclipsed everything, the limits of his stride an annoyance, leg cramps something to be worked through and ignored as soon as he could run again.
Sauron raced along, soon the thoughts that whirred in his head turned into a mantra. “Find the medicine, Find the medicine.” He said it over and over again as he ran, the rhythym let him push almost everything else from his mind and focus on running. This worked so well that when he finally noticed that the tracks ended he skidded to a stop and slipped in the mud almost slamming into a tree. Gasping, he turned and walked back bending over to look at where they stopped...did they climb into the tree? The tracks seemed very fresh and somewhat chaotic. He started circling outward looking for where they started up again. Then when he approached a large bush he felt the hair stand on end. Something was wrong. No sooner did he think that, then a net dropped over him, weighted by two leaflings. Sauron roared not unlike a beast. He managed to climb to his feet and pulled as hard as he could on the net dragging one of the young males over to him. He lifted until the shorter males feet came off the ground, he grabbed the male by the scruff off his vest and tossed the net off.
“Are you the ones who stole the herbs?” He grunted gutteraly, all eloquence of speech having deserted him during the run here.

The Catch

The leafling in his grasp did nothing but whine like a pup, that wasn’t very helful so Sauron shook him a bit. “Tell me!”
The other boy used his distraction to throw the net at his back, the tactic worked and Sauron made to turn around when the lad in his grasp pulled a dagger and struck.
It felt like he had lost his eye, blood flowed and he dropped his catch. “Why you little...” His heart learched, and he pawed at his face, oh thank the trees he still had his eye but he couldn’t see out of it at the moment as there was too much blood pouring from the gash that was above and below the socket. He knew he could have lived without an eye but that did not mean he wanted to.
He felt the darkness inside him stir, it had been hidden since that first battle, now though it had no doubt what was putting Sauron and Kelina in danger. Before there had been a chance that the theif was perhaps somehow an innocent, but these three leaf brats were definitely guilty; guilty enough to draw a blade on him first.
He felt the darkness leak into his eyes and he turned to find that there was a third boy with a pouch who had joined the other two. A piece of stolen plant hung from the bag. There, that was the most damning evidence there could be except a confession, which he didn’t need now.
“You all have gone too far.” Evidentaly they could see the change in him as well, or he looked considerably more deranged with half of his his face and chest draped in a cloak of liquid crimson. The boys scattered in all directions.
Sauron snapped.

The Reckoning

Under normal circumstances Sauron would never have treated boys, well prentices, so harshly, but the weight of the life of death situation that Kelina was in currently eclipsed most of his higher sensibilities. She stove to birth their children, a painful, physical and emotional event that he wished he could help her with but couldn't. There was more then her life in danger but those of the babies and judging from the size of her she had twins again. That meant three precious lives that he refused to stop fighting for.

These boys wasted precious time stealing supplies that they had no right to be meddling with in the first place, he cared not a whit if they were to heal someone else, even another pregnant mother. If such was the case they could just as easily have asked Ime for a share civily or another healer for that matter.
But no they took things in their entirety that could not be gotten in time from their source in time to help Kelina. He aimed and released so fast, a perfect synergy of body, mind and space. His lance left his hadn and drove into the thigh of the lad with the sack, the momentum propelled them both back and the lance head dug itself into the tree behind.
The boy screamed but could not move, his friends tried to tug him away but he slapped at them to get them to leave off. Sauron stalked over and the two leaflings split in either direction, leaving their friend pinned under Sauron's gaze.
"Today you stole medicine from a laboring mother, may you rot." He snarled. He was sure this was some stupid immature dare or prank or whatever. He snatched the bag away and pawed through its contents, extracting anything wasn't Ime's and dumping it on the ground. All that was stolen was there. A part of him burried deeper was a little relieved. He had what he needed.

Leavetaking

He wasn't malicious per say, he just had a goal. He wasn't evil, he was getting what needed done done as fast as possible because his woman needed him. He needed to get back to her before she lost too much strength. Sauron wrenched his lance out of the tree, and the boy dropped to the ground in a heap.

"I don't care if you bleed out, but if your friends think you worthy, they will put pressure on both sides of your leg. I missed the artery," He said loudly enough that the cretins in the bush could hear. Missing arteries meant that the boy had a better chance of survival. Sauron spun on his heal, not bothering to stop his own bleeding. With sack in tow he started to run as fast as he could.

Thinking hard he paused and swung into the trees, he wasn't tracking anymore and the floor was muddy, slowing him unnesessarily. Moving along the boughs he started to pick up speed which helped him breath easier.

He was afraid, so afraid that he would be too late, that Kelina would be too weak or the babies too stressed. His family meant everything to him. He didn't want to loose any of them. Kelina, Kres, Seze and the as yet unborn babies were all depending on him.

Sauron was tired, bleeding still but mildly and his lack of concentration got back at him, he stepped too close to the edge of a branch and his foot slipped off, he fell and banged his other leg, nearly falling to the ground and he would have if those vines hadn't been there. He burned both his hands slowing his descent but was able to drop at the end without breaking bones.

He debated going back into the trees, moving the whole time, but the ground was more stable now so he just pounded back toward their home. The thieves had not gotten altogether too far as the terrain was somewhat hard to manuever in, especially if you were not confident in the branches as someone who was raised in the Jauhar forest was.

Homecoming

Now the terrain became familiar, that which he had seen everyday ever since he and Kelina had built their home. A part of him regonized this place as his territory, his to protect, all those in his home he was charged with protecting. Kelina was strong, a fighter, and Sauron had met no woman with a stronger sense of self. She was his world, the holder of his heart and the thought of her in danger threatened to break him. He loped through the village lacking the ability to sprint.
Those before him now willingly leapt out of the way, from the look of him they could probably tell that there was an emergency in progress and that it didn’t concern them as Sauron kept quiet through it all. The wound on his face had ceased to hurt at some point on the trip. He would have blocked it anyway, a simple wound, non lethal, not really threatening either just not aesthetically pleasing. Nothing in comparison to the chance that Kelina had taken.
His only consellation was that they had both decided to have more children, she had had little trouble with the first set of twins, and she had only grown stronger since, she wasn’ t that old either and had rebounded with a vengeance from her first pregnancy. It was a decision they had made together and they would face it together. He would be the comfort, the standing stone, it was what he could give her now. He would give anything to have her safe and sound. The babies too, they were more delicate then their mother, and without her, well nothing would be the same.
Sauron shuddered to a stop at the door of the house, he thrust the bag in and dropped it, not wanting them to see his bloody face. It would do nothing but distract the healer and worry his wife. The deed done he went to wash, he looked at himself in the water and found that he started even himself. He had made the right descision then. He soaked his face. He couldn’t help but wonder if the boy survived. He thought the chances were pretty good that he would. As stupid as he and his friends were they seemed to care for each other. He supposed these thoughts were evidence that he had finally come to terms somewhat with that shade of dark within him. He was a caring person, but there was no one he cared more for than Kelina and his family, now including Isaris and Issaly and in an extentionary version Ime as she had always been there to help with birthing. Something that was just too stressful for him to handle by himself. Under dire circumstances he thought the could at least try but it was so much better to have a real midwife there not a bedraggled husband alone and worried.
Clean and refreshed Sauron went back to the house to wait outside for a bit, gathering his composure. Once he felt he was calm enough he stood and returned to Kelina. Where he belonged, where he would always belong.
