~Monica Sforza~

Monica got to her apartment and walked in. She closed the door and immediately went to her computer to put the memory drive. She let it sync and pushed play.

"If you are watching this, I am probably dead. I have discovered something very dangerous to know, and it could cost me my life if the wrong people found out. Obviously, those wrong people have found out and killed me. Now, I am entrusting you with this information."

Once she heard all he information, she reset the device to make it look like she did not get to watch it. Then, she was thinking of a way to destroy the device once and for all.

Just then a tapping could be heard, light tapping, as if from a finger against wood. It wasn’t going to take much looking to suddenly find a man—the same man from previously—sitting on her couch by the window, laying back comfortably, his elbow resting on the arm of the couch. His expression was stern, just like when she met him, and the same air of mystery as before, albeit heightened. He’d been so silent that she couldn’t have even heard him. How long could he have been there? It wasn’t easy to figure out; she’d been so distracted by the information presented to her that she wasn’t fully alert on what was occurring around her. His gaze met hers, those same red irises. He was very composed, very calm, as if the occurrence was routine and that he’d been there a thousand times. It wasn’t that he actually had been there several times; he was no stranger to being in a stranger’s home. He was dressed in a plain gray shirt, jeans, and boots, his left arm revealed to be prosthetic, a steel replica of his right arm—unarmed, though it wasn’t like he needed a weapon to kill anyone. It was probably not wise to engage him in combat, not that it ever was, but he didn’t look as if he intended to kill her.

Monica got up from her computer and went running through the living room to the kitchen to destroy the memory drive. However, she stopped and went back to the couch area. She gasped when she saw that it was that guy from the club. How long was he there? How the heck did he get in? She thought she was so careful and got the best locks.

She looked him over and noticed that he was wearing different cloths and that his arm was a prosthetic. Her amber irises met his gaze. "What are you doing here?" She finally asked, knowing it probably was not good. "If I knew I would have some company, I would have made some tea." She said, half jokingly.

“I guess you could say I’m saving you.” From what, she could have wondered? He pointed nonspecifically in the direction of her desk, lowering his hand moments after. “Your friend knew too much, planned to do something about it; she’s dead now.” He was very blunt; he didn’t want to waste her time by sugarcoating what was obvious. “And now you know, but they don’t know that.” And “they” likely meaning those who organized her friend’s assassination—the Syndicate as the files claimed. “Take my advice, forget about it all. That information should’ve been gone alongside your friend. She got too curious, and that’s what happens when people play hero when there’s too many villains.”

Monica watched him intently and raised a brow. He could have just ended her right there to cover his tracks and take the memory drive to his bosses. However, he just told her to forget the whole thing. "Well, I was going to destroy the drive when I noticed that you were sitting on my couch. I wouldn't know where to start, even if I wanted to and there was a possibility to achieve her goal." She replied with a sigh. "So what the lab I am working for is owned by people I don't totally agree with. There is always a price for everything, even peace. I may not be a part of the underworld, but I am not that naive." She said as she handed over the drive in her hand. "My life is not worth it."

He nodded his head, impressed by her receptiveness. It was true, too many were naïve and assumed that they stood a chance just because they realized there were things occurring behind closed doors. It all had a place; the beautiful buildings and all the glamour was nothing but a shroud to hide the raw darkness that dwelled beneath it all. “You’re smart then.” He stood up from his seat, acquiring the drive that she’d been wise to yield to him. He wouldn’t scrap it; he’d give it to his employers subsequently. Instead, he slipped it into his right jeans pocket.

His attention was seized by the painting of two horses, somewhat appropriate because he could incorporate a deeper meaning. It was very much like the world they lived in, the ideals of justice and injustice, the horses colliding for dominance, despite both being necessary to the bigger picture. He sighed, a melancholy air encumbering him. “I’d better get going; I wasn’t welcomed,” he said making his way towards the door.

Monica had to smile a bit when he said that she was smart, and then, she noticed that he was looking at her painting. She had a lot of deep thinking while looking at that painting. There could be a lot of meanings to it, and she wondered which one he was thinking about. There was always some kind of struggle in this world, and those two horses could represent any of them. Then, she heard him sigh and could feel the sadness coming from him. He was about to leave and maybe she should have let him, but she spoke. "No one said that you were not welcomed here. Yes, it was a surprise that I have found you sitting on my couch, but I never said to get out. However, you can leave if you really want to. It is not like I can keep you here."

He’d literally just set his hand on the knob by the time she’d spoken, though paused instead of turning it right then. “What’s there to do when not expecting guests? I’m usually the unwelcomed guest.” Yeah, no kidding, breaking and entering usually with one of his bullets inside someone’s head. “Is it too late to accept on that offer of tea?” Honestly, she had an allure to her. He’d have usually left in situations like this, but she had a peculiar scent that he found very enticing; the Suldari had very animal instincts, so a good scent was even more noticeable, not that she was only appearing as far as nasal stimulation; she appealed equally to the eyes if not even more so. Nevertheless, he knew to be cautious.

Monica was a little caught off guard. She expected him to leave, but he paused for a moment and spoke. "That is a good point." She replied with a little smile. A part of her did wanted him to stay a bit, but she knew to be cautious. She did not know where this attraction was coming from. She could only guess it was the Suldari in her liking the masculine built of his, but it was more than just that. Maybe it was that air of mystery. "No, it is not too late if you don't mind waiting for the water to heat up." She sincerely replied. "Black, green, or catnip?"

He pulled his hand away from the door and turned around, nodding when she mentioned him waiting. Patience would be fine; he was no stranger to waiting. It was comparative to how he’d waited for the right time to shoot regarding bullets. “Black, thank you,” he replied. He honestly hadn’t had tea in months; the places he ventured were usually offering only alcoholic beverages. Black tea happened to contain more caffeine; being alert was his top priority, even if sedatives weren’t very effective on Suldari to begin with. As he walked to an appropriate distance from her, he used his right hand to lightly scratch his shoulder. Unfortunately having a bionic left arm meant he didn’t have nails on that hand to help him scratch, so he relied on his right to do that. Perhaps she’d notice that, despite his seemingly loose demeanor, he was actually very calculated. The distance he was from her, the way he moved; it was as so clean that he seemed to be processing it all thoroughly. Even as he stood there, he had a profound way to gaze at her. He wasn’t as restricted as when they first met, because he had other priorities at the time. He seemed to be scanning her figure, but his face was so apathetic that it wasn’t considerably disrespectful. Mystery was one way to describe him; he acted so open yet was clearly so blank.

"Do you take sugar with that?" Monica asked while she walked to the kitchen. She put a pot on the stove and brought out a box of tea. It was the good black tea, not the stuff in a bag. She had noticed that he was scratching himself from the corner of her eye in the other room. You would have thought that they could have made an bionic arm that looked more natural after all these years. It had been thousands for crying out loud.

Well, it seemed he got the spot anyway with his other hand. The thought of offering to scratch the spot did cross her mind, but she did not thought it was appropriate and did not want to offend him. She could feel that he was looking her over, but not in a way that would make it awkward.

“It never hurt to make things a little sweeter.” His bionic arm was very obvious, but there was a reason for that. Prosthetics nowadays were so excellent that they mimicked real limbs almost perfectly, but his arm in particular wasn’t for cosmetic purposes; it was made of a special metal, intended to be a weapon, not just a basic prosthetic. He didn’t really sit down yet; his attention was drawn by the window, though he gave occasional glances back to her. During all that time, he was still very much a stranger; she never even received his name, or at least the alias he went by. In fact, she never openly introduced herself either.

"Things are better when they are sweeter." Monica replied as she made the tea. She added just enough sugar to take that bitter flavor out, but not too much that it would be overpowering. When she came out with the cups, it hit her that they have not introduced themselves to each other. "With all what happened, we did not even get the chance to introduce ourselves." She said as she handed him one of the cups. "I am Doctor Monica Sforza." She said, obvious that her name is no secret. However, she figured that he probably would give her an alias due to his job. She knew that he did not know her long enough to tell her his real name, but at least, she would have something to call him by.

He accepted the cup, though didn’t quite begin drinking from it yet. “I’m called Deadlock. It’s not a true name, but it is mine.” It wasn’t just because of his occupation; he was to maintain that the man he was died. His old name was long forgotten, and he wanted it to stay that way. “Probably not a name you want to throw around, though. It tends to provoke unnecessary attention.” Some bounty hunters were pretty vain when it came to their infamous names. He didn’t really care too much for it. He only cared about people leaving him alone when it mattered.
