This was the mountain. Hartekellion squinted as he scanned the cliffside below, searching out signs of his quarry. Rumor had it a Skinwalker had claimed this mountain as its territory. And it was true that he could see signs of a large animal living in the area, if he looked closely. A trail worn into the cliff-side, bits of foliage torn away, scrapes in the ground. No blood, or at least, no obvious signs of blood. No cries from anguished victims. Not that Hartek could have heard them at this altitude, with the wind whistling around him. He had approached the mountain by air so he could get a good look at a Skinwalkers' territory. But it looked so... normal. Which, Hartek had to admit, made it even more dangerous.

His heartbeat picked up pace as he considered what he was about to do. Not in fear, but in anticipation of the justice he was about to bring to this beast's doorstep! Hartek had always felt the drive to dedicate himself to a cause, and everything he had heard or seen about Skinwalkers said that here was a worthy cause! He would battle these Skinwalkers and help keep the land safe for Soquili!

Stooping, Hartek plummeted toward the mountain, choosing a clear spot to land on. As soon as talon met earth, he sucked in a deep breath, and yelled out a challenge to the trees and rocks. And whatever might be listening within them.

"HEAR ME, SKINWALKER! I, HARTEKELLION, HAVE COME TO CHALLENGE YOU! SOQUILI-KIND WILL NO LONGER TOLERATE YOUR PRESENCE ON THIS MOUNTAIN! COME OUT AND FACE ME!"

Bear Claws had been watching the speck high above him for a while. It had first appeared as a small black dot, hiding up in the clouds. He had thought it was a bird at first, and that had caught his attention. Bear hated birds, with every fibre of his being. They taunted him, wheeling so high above, always out of his reach. Their cavorting cries would echo through the air, voices shrill and piercing to his delicate ears. A snarl spread across his face. He hated avian species far more than most purewalkers hate, well, anything.

If he had his way, he would rip them all limb from limb. Feathers everywhere. Blood everywhere. He wanted them dead. Every last one. Never again to hear their stupid screams, never again to see them flap just out of his reach… Every chance he got he would lunge at them, trying to kill as many as he could. Sometimes he managed to catch one. Usually only the stupid ones. Pigeons and the like. Unless one was injured, then it was definitely Claws’ prey.

The worst thing about birds? Even if he caught one, it tortured him in its death. They were barely more than a mouthful. A feathery, tough mouthful at that. So little meat, so little flesh. But so many damn feathers. They would be everywhere. Plastering themselves to his tongue, catching between his teeth, hitching in his windpipe. They were disgusting. He’d find them in his pelt weeks after eating his last bird-meal, and he’d have no idea how it got there. And the bones, the horrible, hollow bones. They were the least satisfying part. They just gave away, snapping with no effect on his part. And they hurt when they jammed in his throat. No, he vowed he would be the death of all birds he met. But he wouldn’t grace them with the pleasure of being eaten by someone as strong as himself. They deserved to be massacred and left to rot. Only then would he be satisfied.

But the dot in the sky grew larger and larger the longer Claws’ watched, and he quickly realised that this was no normal bird. In fact, it was no bird at all. It was a Soquili. His twisted grin grew ever larger, matched by the mouths on his tail. Both of them matched his expression, manic and excited. One slowly extended a tongue, licking along the ridge of his teeth. Now Soquili, those made for a decent meal. He rose to his paws, letting out a luxurious stretch. He had been resting in his feral form, all the better for traversing his mountainous territory, and all the better for stalking up on his prey now. He could see him wheeling overhead, looking for a landing spot. Oh how he would suffer for his mistake.

Then came the shout. Now. This was interesting. Was the stranger… challenging him? Bear let out a low chuckle. He was. Well. Now he would definitely suffer. After all, he had been just itching for a decent slaughter lately. He let rip a loud roar, rumbling out through his chest, echoing through the air around him. Telling him he would rise to his challenge. And then he took a leap, landing at the edge of the landing spot, across the clearing from where the stallion stood.
