STUDENT FORM Name: Cody MacLain Alias: Cody, knuckle head, GODDAMN IDIOT Age: 16 Gender: Male Powers: Shield, Magnokinesis, Clairvoyance Aura: Red-orange (#D22514), low frequency, blue (#35B0C0) contrast
Appearance: Middle dark skin tone, dark brown hair that reaches to chin/mid neck, sometimes worn in a short ponytail (front section of hair not long enough to be pulled in like this and this, though without the stray hairs in the face), teal eyes, looks similar to this dude (sans facial hair) but younger. Would wear a pendant on a ball chain necklace (similar to dog tags but not actually dog tags, possible design a stylized silver skull, eyes and nose would be cut outs ((it's fine if the pendant has to be simplified, mainly a suggestion if a design does end up being needed)) ), t-shirt with maybe a v neck, and some possibilities for the rest include a zip up form fitting hoodie (either on loosely or tied around his waist), jeans or knee length shorts, sneakers that have good traction and are easy to run in, maybe some kind of bracelets around his wrists or even ear piercings (Rough potential outfit made with this base, colors aren't exact and shoes definitely need to be changed, but gives a good general idea) (will be rewriting) (Height is 5'6", he short)
Personality: More than once Cody has been called an idiot. It's not that he does bad in classes - quite the opposite, actually - but rather that he has the unfortunate habit of acting before thinking things through. He fully admits his mistakes, attempts to laugh it off, and yet somehow manages to get into trouble again next week. Luckily(?) most of this stupidity just extends to physical stunts and not how he treats others, but it is still aggravating to those who might worry about him.
The frequent cause of this stupidity is a seemingly boundless wellspring of energy and a desire to explore. "Bouncing off the walls" is often quite literal in Cody's case - he's been doing free running and parkour for years now and has no intention of stopping anytime soon. It is all too easy for him to get caught up in the moment while doing this, and it doesn't help that he ends up looking more at possibilities than consequences (for example, thinking of how cool things would look at the top of a tree and not how he'd get down afterwards).
Even with all this excess energy Cody is a surprisingly stress free individual, relaxed in his own skin and happy with his abilities. This isn't to say he is completely without stress, but rather that he often handles it well and is able to burn it off efficiently in his free time. In the rare times he isn't able to burn it off he either ends up deflated or cranky, and in severe cases may blow up at someone else. Once he calms down the teen does his best to apologize, thought the blow up may actually ramp up his stress for a little while longer, due to guilt and the general strains of such a situation. At the very least this is a rare occurrence, and he does his best to prevent it from happening in the first place.
Cody does his best to be friendly and generally nice to others, helping out and making casual conversation. The moment he wants to try a little harder to know someone however is when things go down hill, the teenager coming off as an overeager puppy and perhaps getting a bit too intense. Getting called out on this over eagerness is one of the few things that can make him embarrassed, and it will take him a bit to open up again, not wanting to overstep his bounds. In contrast, the teen is denser than a brick when it comes to someone being interested in him. Most of the time he'd just think they were being nice, and it would take an outright confession for him to even get a clue that something was going on.
Another situation where Cody fails miserably is lying. Very often his poker face is absolutely awful, his true emotions or guilt showing through bright as day and derailing anything he might say - if he isn't already stumbling over the words. As a result of this, if Cody has to resort to a falsehood (such as keeping a secret) he uses half truths and vague wording to try and cover his behind, with somewhat limited success.
Peer pressure is something Cody is both very good and very bad at handling. If there is something he does not want to do the teen will turn into a rock and not budge for the world. Things he does want to do, however, are an entirely different matter. It is far too easy for someone to cheer Cody into trying an ill advised jump or a crazy exploration, and having people around that egg him on instead of calming him down is an absolute recipe for disaster.
One gray area with peer pressure is when authority figures and rules are involved. Overall Cody does want to respect rules and authority and this acts as a temper on getting egged into bad decisions. Unfortunately, the teen can end up egging himself on if he gets too caught up in the moment, ignoring or forgetting the rules he was intent on following a second before. Cody feels horribly guilty after, and he means the best, but get the adrenaline going and it is all too easy for the rule book to end up flushed down the toilet.
When it comes to jerks and bullies, Cody usually just removes himself from the situation as soon as possible. Of course, sometimes this is easier said than done and can be a source of the "unburned stress" mentioned earlier. This changes when someone else is brought into the bullying situation. At this point Cody will often actively try to get the bully to step off, even up to and past the point of getting into a physical fight. Afterwards he will do his best to tell himself it was deserved and to walk away without remorse, but sometimes it can lead to a good deal of cognitive dissonance with his desire to avoid hurting others.
While this desire is mainly a passive one (regulating his own actions to avoid bringing harm), if he does see someone in trouble, such as with the bullies, Cody will try and take some time to help out. As a result, the aftermath of a fight can be hard for Cody to deal with. Sure, he was trying to help someone not get hurt, but what does that mean when he had to hurt someone else? Eventually Cody will either come to decide that it was justified and move on, or he'll regret his actions and actually move to apologize to the person he hurt. If this ends up not being possible it will eat at Cody for awhile until he can figure out a different way to resolve the issue (such as talking to the person he helped to "re-balance" his mental equation on if it was worth it).
His tendency to get into trouble, of course, is somewhat of a blind spot when it comes to not wanting to hurt other people. Most of the time he just views it as being his own stupid mistake and he'll take the consequences for it, conveniently forgetting how worried people might get or the resources they might have to spend to get him out of trouble. Cody's already lost a few friends due to them not being able to handle the stress, and the number will probably go up unless he can learn to change this habit in the future.
History: From a very young age Cody’s parents recognized that they had a practical monkey on their hands, the boy climbing everywhere and sometimes sprinting halfway across the house before they even knew he was gone. With kindergarten approaching they were at a loss on how he’d stay still in class, until they got a recommendation from a friend – gymnastic classes.
One of Cody’s fondest early memories was learning how to cartwheel and tumble on the tumbling mat, and it wasn’t long before he threw himself whole heartedly into the acrobatics. To his parent’s relief and surprised joy, Cody not only managed to sit still after starting school but also received very good grades as he went forward.
Another favorite part of Cody’s childhood was visiting his uncle Darryl. It wasn’t just the fact that he ran a mechanic shop, or was willing to gruffly listen to anything Cody had to say (though those were definitely pluses) – it was that his uncle was a psychic. The young boy had nearly exploded with excitement when he’d seen his uncle magically move a wrench to his hand from across the shop, and it’d taken the man the better part of an hour to explain what magnokinesis was and that, no, he was not a jedi. (Darryl had a long chat with Cody’s parents later on, somewhat annoyed that they hadn’t explained psychics to him already and that the boy had had to hear it from him. No, he didn’t care that they didn’t show any abilities themselves, it was still a family trait Cody could display someday.)
It was around late elementary school that Cody’s enthusiasm for gymnastics began to dim. Yes, he loved the acrobatics, the wild movement and learning how to control his own body, but what he didn’t love was the rigid rules and regulations on what he was allowed to do with his own abilities. As one of the more gifted athletes in the program he began to receive training for competition, and yet the more he trained the less he wanted to do it. Two months before his first meet he finally went to his parents and told them he wanted to quit. They were somewhat shocked, having seen just how much he’d poured himself into the acrobatics, but they eventually agreed as long as he would keep his grades up and stay out of trouble.
Cody managed the first part without too much trouble. The second... not so much. After quitting gymnastics Cody began to search around for an alternative way for him to use his acrobatic skills, and it didn’t take him long for him to discover free running and parkour. He was thrilled – this was what he’d searched for all along, this was something he could do. His parents? Not so thrilled, now seeing their son coming home with a split lip and bruises from another failed trick or jump. They grounded him from going too far from home, but this just made Cody better at avoiding injury and learning what he could do with mundane surroundings. Sometimes it felt like he was jumping higher than he should be able to, though for the most part Cody just brushed it off on his training or a particularly good jump.
All of this changed when Cody was 15. More of Cody’s classmates were starting to notice his acrobatic abilities and it didn’t take long for them to start asking what tricks he could do – tricks which soon turned into dangerous stunts. Caught up in the headiness of his own abilities Cody began to run with an older group of daredevils who went to high places and abandoned areas. Fed up and worried sick at his risk taking one of Cody’s closer friends actually left him at this point, and while part of Cody was alarmed by this he told himself that things would still be okay.
The tipping point came when the group went to the old abandoned Raith house. Ignoring the warnings all around the group started to explore the old mansion anyway, right up to the point where the floor collapsed beneath them. Panicked and more than few people injured the older members began to scream at each other, Cody sitting dazed in a corner and unable to understand how he’d landed so softly. It wasn’t over, however – the remainder of the ceiling began to groan, screams of anger turning to fear as part of the building caved in on top of them. Cody threw his arms up, ready to be hit at any moment – but instead a crackling cage of energy burst into being around him, deflecting the falling wood and debris.
For Cody, the aftermath was almost worse than the incident itself. While no one had been seriously injured and Cody had escaped relatively unscathed, both law enforcement and parents became aware of what they had been doing, and, needless to say, were not happy. Several of the older members received trespassing charges and community service. Cody himself only narrowly avoided getting something on his record (it was assumed the older individuals had been a “bad influence” and Cody didn’t argue). With his treatment at home however, he might as well have. A strict curfew, stronger supervision, and barely allowed to leave the house outside of school.
After a couple weeks of asking Cody’s parents finally let him visit his uncle Darryl. What happened in the mansion had been gnawing at Cody for a while now, and he had a feeling his uncle might be the one with answers. The first part of the visit wasn’t exactly pleasant, his uncle (quite rightfully) chewing him out for what he’d done. Eventually though Darryl wound down, looked Cody straight in the eye, and flat out told him to spill what had happened. Everything that happened.
Cody went over the events of that night in the Raith house, and unlike with his parents and the cops he kept in the parts about the soft landing and the cage of energy. Finally, he asked the question he'd been sitting on for the past couple weeks - did this...
Did this mean he was a psychic?
Instead of answering right away Darryl asked his own question - if Cody ever found himself jumping strangely high. The teen had to give a surprised yes, and to his further shock his uncle just groaned, putting his head in hand and mumbling something about "late bloomer" and "should have noticed sooner." After a moment he gave his straight answer - yes, Cody was a psychic.
Over the course of the afternoon Darryl went on to explain that the soft landing and high jumps were an untrained form of something called levitation, and the cage of energy was a type of psychic shield. Even after this Cody still had a million more questions and was brimming with energy (him! A psychic!) but at this point Darryl told him it was time to go home and if he wanted to learn more he'd need to come back tomorrow. So Cody did. And the next day. And the day after that.
At first Cody's parents were worried about how much time he was now spending at his uncle's shop, but they soon realized that time spent at the shop was time spent away from getting in trouble, and they gave their blessing. Cody did still do some casual free running, but he made sure now to do it independently and to take personal responsibility. With how much time Cody was spending at the shop Darryl started having him help out, something which the teen found surprisingly enjoyable. It became a sort of running joke for Cody to ask if he could get some of the nicer vehicles that came in (a crotch rocket was a particularly common candidate), but Darryl just told him he'd end up crashing it. Cody couldn't exactly argue.
When Cody accidentally brought over a wrench from across the shop one day, just like his uncle had during his childhood, he was absolutely ecstatic and it took Darryl several minutes to calm him down to the point where he could say that yes, he would train him, just please stop bouncing around the shop. As they went over the basics the next few weeks however Cody could tell his uncle was thinking on something, and he found out just exactly what it was soon enough.
Sitting down for a talk with Cody and his parents, Darryl recommended that the teen be enrolled in Majesco psychic academy. It only took a few minutes for Cody to agree to go, and his parents came a little while after. Sure, it was going to be another school... but he would also learn how to be a psychic, and he would meet other psychics there too. All in all? That sounded like the best school year he could ask for.
