Welcome to the Unofficial Planetary Symbol Registry, where I hope to compile the symbols people are using for their senshi homeworlds! Why? Even though planet symbols are generally unnecessary for most aspects of the shop, it does come up in cases of transcendent senshi, princesses/princes and knights. This unofficial registry allows us to show off this minor character element as well as help keep us from stepping on anyone's toes.
Suggestions:
- Check the Wikipedia page for your asteroid. Some minor or dwarf planets have commonly recognized symbols and Wikipedia will typically show those above the infobox on the top right of the asteroid's page.
Check out astrologists like Martha Lang-Wescott, Al H. Morrison and Zane B. Stein who have made other asteroids popular among astrologers who work with asteroids and have created symbols to accompany their work. Mark Andrew Holmes has also created many asteroid symbols in his work with asteroid astrology, but they are not nearly as widely accepted (and generally made in the style of old MS Paint).
Denis Moskowitz has also created symbols for many of the larger planetary moons, asteroids and the non-zodiac constellations which have been adopted by science fiction and fantasy communities.
Check out some alchemical symbols. The majority of the official planetary symbols originated in alchemy.
Search for hobo symbols, runes or voodoo symbols.
Create a symbol by stylizing the homeworld's initial(s), a Chinese character, an initial in a different language's alphabet, something related to the homeworld's name or the element your character is a senshi of.
If you have one of the homeworlds that already has a designated official (or unofficial) symbol, you do not have to use that symbol! Many planets and asteroids have multiple symbols - like Pluto, Uranus. Vesta has a whole bunch! All this to say: you can ignore any official or unofficial symbols for your homeworld already out there if you don't like them or just have a better idea.
Please do not use official symbols that are related to a homeworld that is not your own. This is primarily to prevent toe-stepping and confusion.
Small differences can be a completely different symbol. (see Venus and Mercury)
Please remember that this is an unofficial list. If your senshi reaches prince/princess stage or transcends, staff may require alterations or simplifications to your symbol.
Submitting a symbol:
- The preferred format is black-on-transparent (png or gif), but black-on-white is okay.
Preferably a height of 50 pixels, but I can work with whatever you give me.
Plain-text descriptions are okay too! Just try not to be too wordy. This is a symbol, not a heraldic crest.
I will try to keep the list updated as often as reasonable.
