User Image Kasmai had left the forge after a long day and to the market. It was mid-week, and time for him to pick up groceries for the next few days. He'd had a chance to wash his face and hands, so he was no longer awfully sooty and sweaty, but his hair was still a mess and clung to the back of his neck. He couldn't wait for a long bath when he got home. It was harder and harder to make it through the work day in his...condition.

Basket on his arm, tucked against his swelling belly, Kasmai perused the wares of the fruit vendor. The same fruit as always, but the scents were pricking his senses differently. He bought some staples, like apples and oranges, but for some reason the very idea of bananas was revolting to him. He pressed his fingertips to his lips and tried not to inhale. He bought half a watermelon instead.

Better not visit the fishmonger, in this shape.

He tucked a loaf of bread into his basket after paying the vendor, and some sticky buns for breakfast. They were Cari's favorite. As he turned to start toward the florist, he caught sight of...someone who struck him as familiar, yet Kasmai couldn't place him. Frowning, he followed him at some distance, trying to remember where he might have seen this fellow before. Then the other rounded a corner and Kasmai saw his face.

Memories, fragmented and like wispsy trails of images, flashed in his mind. A smile, a dance. Hands on his hips. Then they were outside. The stars shone brightly. A kiss in the curve of his neck.

Oh.

Oh!

A blush rose to Kasmai's face. Had they really...? Outside...?? And he couldn't even remember his name!

Realizing he'd stopped walking, Kasmai began again with a start, walking with purpose to the other purple Pae. But he slowed as he started thinking. What could he say? Did the other male even remember him? He bit his lip and fiddled with the handle on his basket. Would he even recognize him, in this form? This form...

Suddenly Kasmai's eyes got wide. Could this other male be the father of the growing life within him? This might be his one chance to connect! Surely their unborn child deserved that much. He picked up his stride again and approached the other from the side. He cleared his throat gently and offered a sheepish smile. "Excuse me," he began. "You look...familiar to me. I was wondering if perhaps we'd met recently." That seemed as innocuous a way to begin as any.

User ImageAlister's concerns were considerably less than the one-night companion he had already put to the back of his mind.

His concerns were thus: Lisandru was being a shut-in again, Eknath was being a lazy cat and going to the spa again, and his mother -- okay, he wasn't going to get into his mother. Those thoughts would lead down a bad path, probably. But due to his family being ... well, his family, Alister was currently out at the markets, shopping and bartering for everyone he knew. As family, anyway. Not that Eknath was family.

Gross.

As Alister rounded a corner to look for some of those damn flowers Lisandru liked arranging in his house, he noticed that someone seemed to be trailing behind him. Someone with particular womanly wiles and perhaps a bit too much around the middle. It caught his attention faintly at first, but when he looked over his shoulder again in a minute to confirm if the lady was still there or not--and she was--Alister grew a bit more concerned. Why was someone following him around?

Assuming that it might be a thief or something, Alister brought his current groceries a bit closer to his body, walking perhaps a bit faster -- but he jolted when he noticed that the person was next to him.

Oh.

Just wanted to know if they had met before ... not steal his ...

Oh.

Alister had been a bit more lucid than the woman, at the time, considering she had just crashed in the bushes and he got up and wandered home (seriously, he had a house for sleeping), but there was no mistaking the colours of his skin or the voice she was speaking with. Very spacey, almost. Reminded him of a night sky.

Still, it seemed odd that an one night stand would come approach him and ask if they had met. Unless that abnormally large middle had something to do with -- no. No way.

"Uh, yes. I think so. Why?"

Why? Uh...

"Uh..." he said intelligently. He hadn't really thought past approaching his one-night engagement. He coughed nervously.

"I, um, well, it's just that I never got your name..." he finished, rubbing the back of his neck.

And now what? The other male would tell Kasmai his name, and Kasmai would tell him his name, and then they'd what? Smile at each other and be off? How could he break the news that he was with child and was fairly certain said child belonged to him?

"I, er, thought we might have a coffee?" His eyes flicked toward a nearby café. "I quite enjoyed your company the last time we met." Realizing the unintended innuendo, he blushed and put a hand to his cheek to hide it.

Uh?

Sounded like this woman hadn't really thought any of this through. Must have not been the unusually round belly then. Women got demanding when they were pregnant, right? He was pretty sure his mother did, or something. Not that he'd know for sure. He only knew stories. But his mother wasn't the first pregnant woman he had heard of. Perhaps he could go back to shopping --

Name? Why would this woman want his name? Did it matter?

Alister shifted a basket uncomfortably, before offering a genial smile. He supposed he could offer that much, though he wasn't entirely sure why a one night stand wanted to get so personal. Maybe it was the -- no. No way. No way in the Isle was that--

"Alister," offered the shetani, friendly enough, offering a hand for the woman to shake if she wanted to. "And yours? I do not give my name so freely!"

Coffee? Alister had some stuff to get done, like buying those new flowers for Lisandru's budding garden -- but it was the next statement that caught his interest. Enjoyed their time together? Ah! So this woman came up to him for a repeat. Lisandru could wait. He could do that. Wait, could pregnant women do that? Should they even be drinking coffee, or was that some kind of euphemism?

Alister shifted again.

Was acknowledging what the roundness was make him the prime suspect? Did this woman make a habit of bush-rolling or was he just an exception to the rule? No way--

"Should you be drinking coffee?" he asked, with a laugh, figuring that covered both the literal basis and the euphemistic basis.

For the moment, he set his bags down.

"K-Kasmai," he answered, stammering for a second. Thank the Guardians he didn't have a very masculine name, or this would have been even more incredibly awkward. He shook Alister's hand, glad to finally know his name.

The truth was he hadn't thought any of this through very well. He wasn't the overthinker the way his father was. He was more of the...float through life and deal with consequences later kind of person. Maybe that was why his abruptly being female-bodied hadn't bothered him a whit. Maybe if he stopped to think about it, it would. So why on earth would he do that?

But if he was bringing a child into this world, surely he ought to start thinking ahead at least a little. For their wellbeing if nothing else. The first step to that could be making this contact with the most probable father--er, other father--of the child. But this wasn't the kind of thing you could just spring on someone. Like Hi, hello, I think you might be the father of my child. You had to ease into it. Or at least Kasmai assumed you did.

This is why he didn't like thinking things through.

"Why should coffee be a--oh." He looked down at his belly. Was that a problem? He honestly didn't know. "Well, maybe tea instead..." he said, tapping his chin. Then the joke hit him, and he blushed, covering his cheeks with his hands. Alister thought having coffee was a proposition for more of the same! Although Kasmai couldn't honestly say he wouldn't be up for it, especially to experience it sober, that was not quite what he'd meant. "Oh dear..." he said, biting his lower lip. "I didn't mean to come off as too forward...I just wanted to be friends." He offered a nervous smile, which dropped when he realized that might be interpreted as him not being attracted to Alister, which was definitely not the case, considering how flustered he was getting. "I mean! At least for now? Oh Guardians, I'm making such a mess..." he shook his head.

Alister was definitely more of a spontaneous type--he had spent most of his teenage years wandering the Isle, and he had most definitely thought a bush was a good place for ... things--but he was a bit more inclined to deeper thought than Kasmai, perhaps, and he was quickly catching where the woman's attempts to set up something with him were quickly crashing and burning.

His question did reveal Kasmai's true intent, the glance down at her belly--yes, definitely pregnant--and a reference to drinking tea instead. "Maybe a herbal tea," quipped Alister, ready to roll with the idea that Kasmai did not want to do the same things again, though that was a little bit of a disappointment--just in time for Kasmai to catch the real joke. Alister's lips quirked upwards a tad, though he did not quite know if that would be wise while the other was definitely pregnant either, only to watch her ...

Crash and burn a bit further.

A laugh escaped Alister's lips, and he shook his head. "Oh dear indeed."

At least for now? That was interesting. Was this a friends with other benefits potential arrangement, or was this woman thinking something else?

... Not a worry for now, he supposed.

Alister's eyes quickly darted down to Kasmai's torso as he shifted once again, seemingly pondering something--perhaps his luck--before glancing up at Kasmai's eyes again. "Alright, I'm always up for friends."

Of the three children of the mad scientist Esmeé, he was assuredly the most outgoing.

"I'm so glad..." said Kasmai, his voice an embarrassed whisper. Where had his confidence gone? He was normally so self-assured!

He had noticed that Alister kept glancing at his belly. He can't tell if that boded well or ill for this whole encounter. Clearly Alister at least suspected his own involvement in Kasmai's....condition. Did that make him nervous, or was he secretly delighted? Kasmai needed to know. How could he bring this up?

Kasmai tucked an exasperated strand of hair behind his ear.

Tea first. Definitely tea first. He needed to calm his nerves.

"Um, there's a café just over there...I think the proprietor has magic that makes his brews extra energizing." He pointed timidly in the direction of Tariq's Coffee and Tea. He'd been there a few times. The owner's daughter sometimes hung around and was a terrible flirt. Not that Kasmai would know anything about that...

Delighted? Not so much.

Terrified? Probably.

Still, Alister had to get to the bottom of this, as much as part of him very much didn't want to and would rather if he just fled now. Besides, there was certainly a chance that this Kasmai had done this more than once. Perhaps even more than twice! Whatever Kasmai was carrying was most assuredly not his.

He cleared his throat quietly to himself while Kasmai was pointing timidly and glancing in some other direction. Tariq? That was an interesting name, to say the least. Tar-eek? Taaaar-que? Tar-ee-que?

Okay, now he was just distracting himself. He needed to be friendly.

"Sure, we can go there. I'm admittedly curious about a magic that could boost the energy of people drinking a draught," offered Alister, grabbing his assortment of goods off the ground and heading in that direction in nearly one smooth motion. He attempted to keep his pace slower, realizing that Kasmai likely would not be able to easily keep up. Didn't most pregnant women waddle a little? A bit like his mother's penguin familiar, actually. Not that he had ever dealt with a pregnant woman up close before. That wasn't really something he made a habit of, nor honestly did he want to...

When they arrived at the cafe, Alister went for a coffee, of course, wishing for that magic energy. He also thought that a jolt might possibly shake him out of the grim feeling that was growing stronger and stronger that the baby Kasmai was carrying was likely his. Why else she would approach him?

She clearly didn't want another romp in the bushes. (Yet, anyway.)

Kasmai ordered a tea and sat down across from Alister. He fiddled with the end of his braid, playing out scenarios in his head. How could he bring up the proverbial elephant in the room?

Or in this case the baby in the room?

Suddenly he wished he could have wine instead of just tea. That would certainly steady his nerves!

"I..." he started, and immediately wished he hadn't. He wasn't ready yet! He chewed on his bottom lip a little. Dammit, now he had to finish that sentence.

"Er," he continued. "I suppose you're curious about the baby." He patted his belly softly and took a deep breath before continuing, barely above a whisper. "The truth is that I haven't been...intimate....with anyone before or since the party." He peered across the table at Alister with an almost pained expression. He had no idea how the other would react, and it's not as if this was particularly light-hearted news.

It was almost awkwardly quiet until Kasmai offered an 'I'. And then cut himself off again. There were only a couple guesses of what Kasmai was too nervous to say, and none of them were possibilities Alister truly wanted to consider, though he knew the likeliness of them wasn't totally one hundred percent, right? Certainly Alister was not the only one that Kasmai was with if Kasmai had done that with --

Oh.

So the chances that this woman had been with someone beside him took a dramatic plummet down to zero.

Was he really this woman's first? She was quite charming, it was a bit surprising. Of course, maybe he caught her at an opportune moment and she was really always this awkward and nervous--

Okay, Alister was distracting himself from the point.

Alister cleared his throat. Well.

"I can't say I'm shocked considering your obviously pregnant state." He was clearly trying to come off as calmer than he actually was about the whole ordeal, hands visibly shaking a tad when he reached to his mouth and cleared his throat again. "But, ah. You're pregnant, then." A pause. Duh. He just said that. "With my child?"

... What had he gotten himself into?

While Kasmai had been with others in an...intimate kind of way before, he'd never been in a, er, state to conceive a child. This was too complicated to explain, so he settled for nodding. He fiddled with the end of his braid again.

"I'm, um, I'm perfectly capable of raising a child on my own." That was the norm rather than the exception, in his family. "I just....I just thought you ought to know. It wouldn't be right otherwise."

He chanced a glance up at Alister's face, trying to read it. All he saw was fear. Couldn't say he was the only one feeling that...

"Of course, if you wanted, of course we could raise the child together...." he let a hopeful note sneak into his voice.

There was something of relief when Kasmai said she would handle raising the child on her own. Honestly, Alister wasn't really ready for settling down with children; that wasn't really his style at all. Not only that, a child! Of his own! With his genes! That kind of responsibility was not only terrifying, but frankly, it was unwelcomed.

What had he gotten himself into?!

The second that Kasmai actually looked up at him, though, Alister instantly felt bad for his thoughts. He was really going to shackle this poor woman with something that was ultimately his responsibility as well? Sure, Kasmai had .. well. She had. But so did he. Alister wasn't exactly an innocent party in the creation of whatever parasite was inside her right now...

And then he heard that hope.

Damn.

"This is a lot to think about," offered Alister, awkwardly, with a somewhat shaky smile. He was trying to keep it together, but with every passing moment of confirmation, it somehow got harder. What had he done? "But I," I what? "I can't necessarily leave you to take care of something that's kinda my fault by yourself."

Yeah. That sounded right...?

Kasmai let a little glimmer of a smile cross his face. He's so relieved that Alister didn't....he didn't even know. He's relieved that he didn't react poorly, to say the least. It was becoming clear that neither of them knew what they were doing.

"I know it's a lot to think about," agreed Kasmai, nodding and taking a steadying sip of tea. "And...I mean, of course I don't expect you to commit to anything right now!" He had, until that moment, sort of expected him to give an answer right then. Whoops.

"I live down on the Isle, in Koehaira, near the vineyard." He bit his lip. "Maybe we could...meet up again sometime? Where are you from?"

Alister didn't really know the first thing about babies other than the fact they couldn't take care of themselves, cried a lot, and needed a lot of cleaning because apparently they couldn't control their bodily functions either.

... Okay, so that was three things...

So he knew three things about babies! Awesome. That meant he was in a totally great position to be helping a woman raise one. Clearly. Alister made a small groan to himself, leaning forward and rubbing his temples. Then, he realized he was cracking a bit in front of Kasmai, and laughed nervously, instead going for his drink and quickly drowning his visible doubt in that.

Koehaira? The Vineyard? Alister had heard there was some good wines down there. Clearly he needed to drink some of that. A lot of that. He had created a life?! Why had he done that? Well, the why was obvious, he supposed, though at the same time --

"I'm from the City." His head was spinning right now, which was unusual for him. Stay calm, Alister. Stay calm. "Uh, yeah. I live in the area. Most of my family lives here, too."

Another sip.

"So here is convenient, though I'd understand if you'd want me to head down to Koehaira at some point." It'd be a new adventure, though he wasn't sure if it was an adventure he wanted, for once.

Kasmai nodded and pushed a strand of hair out of his face. "Here is convenient," he agreed. "I work at the glass forge in the market district. Although to be honest I don't know how much longer I'm going to be able to do it. It's hard to catch my breath, and you need a lot of breath to blow glass."

He offered a small smile. "So I guess, yeah, at some point we might need to meet closer to my home."

Making this kind of small talk was pleasant for him. He's sorry they had to be doing it under the present circumstances.
