Suhuba Rain Isn't the Only Problem
There were places in Tendaji that were used to the rain, like Jauhar; others saw it as a blessing, getting so little in their day to day lives, like Tale and Oba. Then there were those individuals who saw to it that they used the rain to its full advantage. The sheets of rain came down and it was easy enough to use the cloak of it as a cover for raiding and looting. With everything seeming so gray, who would be able to see the misty figures dip in and out of a home within a matter of moments? Bandits were on the move and scouring Tendaji for targets.
And it isn’t long before they become your problem.
This prompt can be played from either side: your character can be a looter, or they can be a victim.
This battle prompt will be resolved by rolling 1D100. xxxxxPrentice must roll 70-100 for success. xxxxxStage 2 must roll 60-100 for success. xxxxxStage 3 must roll 50-100 for success. xxxxxStage 4 must roll 40-100 for success.
|| Success will result in 50exp in addition to the versatile point || Failure will only allow for the versatile point credit.
Nuri found himself trudging home in a thick downpour, his lightweight clothing dragging heavily across his body. The training had been called quickly once the rains started, and the soldiers almost seemed concerned as they ushered the Prentices through the actions of storing the weapons. In fact, it had been the trainers who were the first to leave this time, mumbling about getting home quickly before disappearing in the grey rain.
"Who woulda thought a little rain would scare away Turin the Terrible?" Nuri glanced to his right at the fellow Prentice, the boy getting a laugh out of his peers as they finished up with the weapons. It was troublesome, the air of warning that seemed to come from the trainer's rush.
Nuri, personally, thought the rains a blessing, a nice respite from this dry weather. Maybe there was something more to it that the elders seemed aware of. Either way, there was little time to worry. The training fields were a bit of a hike from his own dwelling, and if he wanted to make it home and dry off, he needed to leave soon. So, with a quick wave to the others, the dark red Oban moved through the rain and back toward the center of the city.

Today was a particularly rainy day. From her fourth story bedroom balcony, Aseara could usually see above some of the rooftops across the city, but not today. There were no rooftops, no figure to watch walking down the street. There was only the wet grey bleakness that hid everything from view. Aseara did not exactly want to go out, but this was her day off and she really did want to grab a few supplies for herself. Afsana kept them on a healthy diet but Aseara had taken to hiding some delicious teats in her room. She would run out of her favourite and now she had to go out in this horrible weather.
Putting on her cloak, Aseara headed down the stairs and slipped out of the housing pavilion. She would surely get wet, but she wanted to take her time and enjoy her walk. Aseara made it to a merchant and bought what she needed before heading back to the pavilion. There was one problem however; a few shadows were now following her. When she passed an alleyway, they quickly pushed her in and Aseara fell to the ground. “Give us your food and we won’t hurt you!”

As Nuri moved closer to the market, he was quite surprised to see the level of activity. Shop keepers were trying to do what they could in the downpour, and it appeared they had some success. He noticed a family scurrying away with some meats, and a cloaked figure darting off in the same direction he was heading. As he moved past the merchant, he noticed them casting a wary glanced in the direction of the cloaked figure.
Confused, he continued on, trying not to think about the figure. Despite his attempt to push the thoughts away, he found himself walking a bit faster. The rain was still thick, and he couldn't quite make out where the figure was in the distance. As he got closer to where they had pushed Aseara into the alleyway, he took notice of a few figures in much darker clothing.
Nuri suddenly paused, wary and uncertain of what he was about to walk on to. Glancing to the side, he caught sight of an old broom, and he grabbed it for the sake of having something in his hand.
"Hey! What is going on here?"

In her fall Aseara’s hood had revealed her origins and out here she still stood out like a beacon of light. It served to make the figures smirk and move closer in on her. The Wind girl moved back getting wet in the process as she moved into a puddle. Oh Afsana was going to kill her when she found out she’d been robbed of her money! “Please I’ve no money and I really do need this food.” They laughed at her, one of them moving to grab one of her bags but Aseara grabbed on. She was not going to give this up!
Then there was a voice and the three figures paused and turned. Even Aseara stopped and looked at the person holding the broom. Then she clicked in and yelled. “Help they’re trying to rob from me!” All three turned to her again and then the man that had appeared. They were not armed and the idea of getting hit by a broom wasn’t too appealing. “Man there ain’t anything here. Just helping the lady get up. She fell, nothing wrong with helping her.” Aseara got up and grabbed her things. “Liars.” She said angrily pointing at them.
“Listen lady seems fine, we’ll be going now okay?”

Nuri stood there in the heavy rain, the water dripping down his dark hair and into his eyes as he looked at the men before him. They seemed like cowards, and judging by the shape of the girl on the ground, he could tell that they had sprung on her for nefarious reasons. The fact she was down in a puddle, trying to move away from the men and had death grip on her bag keyed in that this wasn't a simple accident. His thoughts were proven correct as soon as he glanced at the girl and she began to yell. His frown deepened, and he let out a growl as he looked at all three of the men before him.
They were unarmed, and he was fresh out of training and with a solid mindset. It would be easy to knock them out and get the girl to safety.
As they began to mumble excuses about helping Aseara up, Nuri watched her get up on her own without a single hand. Clearly, they didn't even feel like making an effort at their lie. So, he moved a step closer to the group, and around, keeping his back toward the wall and his face toward the men. His grip was tight on his broom and he was ready to spring if they thought it would be a good idea to pounce.
"This would be the part where you walk away." He grounded out through clenched teeth, his muscles tense and his heart thrumming in his ears. The adrenaline was picking up, but his minimal training had already taught him to hold off on the first strike. Instead, he continued to watch, waiting for any sign that they would fight instead of run. All the while, he inched closer and closer to where Aseara stood, intent and getting between her and the men in case a scuffle broke out.

The men looked at each other and raised their hands as if to signal that they would do no harm. They shuffled away from the alleyway and disappeared in the rain. Aseara the whole time glared at them, even when they were gone she glared at where they had been. They would not have dared to act this way if it had been sunny, the rain and fog that as settling in was making the worst come out of the woodwork. Lucky for her, someone had actually showed up and saved her. Turning to him, Aseara inspected the one who had saved her.
This was a noble, Aseara could tell and she bowed low immediately. “Thank you for saving me,” she gave him a good look over again. “I didn’t think anyone would be out to help me because of this weather.” She especially had not expected a noble of all people to stop and help her; it was obvious she was not Oban after all. “I don’t know how to thank you.” She was all wet and cold now and he was getting wet too. Etiquette told her she had to repay him, but how did you thank a noble like this?
“Could I perhaps offer you a warm drink in thanks?” They were both getting wet out here and she was cold, something warm would be nice. Moreover, once inside she could assess the damage to her clothing and perhaps dry out a bit before she went out again.

As the men moved away from the alleyway, Nuri felt his grip slowly loosen on the old broom. His breath seemed to catch up with him, and he had to inhale slowly through his nostrils in an effort to control the racing of his heart. This entire situation had been so sudden, and only now did his thoughts move to the front of his mind.
Three against one, what was he thinking?
Dropping the broom with a loud clack, the rain cooled off his skin yet again as he swiveled on his heel to the girl he had saved. Although his focus was on the three men, he still was able to catch the dust colored hair, the pale skin, and the bright blue eyes. The girl was not an Oban, and he had no clue as to why she thought it would be wise to wander around the streets on her own.
He was caught a bit off guard when she quickly bowed, forcing his lips into a frown to cover the surprise that lit his blood-red eyes. Was she one of the new servants that replaced the slaves? Had her employer sent her out on her own to avoid going them self? There was no reason why she would just wander around alone without any sort of mission - it was entirely unheard of for an unaccounted for Tendajian to wander through one of the biggest cities of Oba.
Pulling thin fingers through his scruffy hair, Nuri let out a sigh.
"I cannot begin to imagine what foolishness drove you onto the streets in this weather." He responded to her offer, his frown back on his lips as his back straightened to his soldier pose. He had a reason to be out in the storm, she did not. Perhaps she was a bit mad in the head, to be here alone. Either way, he really couldn't let her go get caught up in another scuffle. Maybe it was her frail appearance, or maybe it was the previous interaction he had with Khalel a few days prior, but Nuri felt himself in a chivalrous mood despite the fact she was not of Oba.
"No matter. I will escort you back to your employer." His frown went away as he looked back at her another moment, before letting out another sigh and letting his shoulders drop, "Please, call me Nuri."

A frown was never a good sign nor was she about to admit she had been out for sweets. Aseara had never been attacked before and had thought herself perfectly safe. She had learned her lesson though; she would never be going out when it was raining ever again unless she was with two other girls. That would be annoying though, having to wait on others because she wanted something. It meant she had to depend on them and Aseara did not like that. She had come here with the specific purpose of becoming as independent as she possibly could.
“These,” Aseara went digging into her bag and produced a single perfectly wrapped sugar candy. She extended it towards him as a gift. The one she had picked out was shaped in a flower. She did not like sharing, but if he had one, he would understand why she had gone out. If he didn’t take it then ore for herself.
“I do not have any lessons today nor do I have any clients, there’s really no need to escort me back to my employer. Thank you though Nuri.” Bring her back to her employer as if she was there for Afsana’s every whims? Aseara straightened herself out. “However you may walk me back if you wish.” Escort sounded like she had done something bad and she would have none of that. She did not know why she was getting all uppity about his attitude, Afsana had goes over extensively the Oban history and their idea of slaves. She had warned them that some may believe that other Tendajians were coming to replace the Matori.
“It is your choice.”

Nuri continued to silently watch Aseara as they stood there in the rain, not realizing exactly how he came off. His face was schooled and controlled, just like always, and there was no need for him to reassure her since she was up and moving. He may have helped her if she appeared injured, but all things considered, she seemed more than capable on her own, if the stubborn set in her features was any indication.
Yet, somehow, she was able to catch him off guard once more.
As she dug into her bag and pulled out the wrapped candy, his gaze dropped to stare at it for a long moment. Was she offering him a piece of candy? It seemed so absurd and out of focus from where their conversation was going. Had she come out into the rain for such a simple treat?
Slowly, he reached out to grab the candy from her palm, holding it up to study the shape. It was simple in feature, yet seemed to taunt him with the promise of a sweet treat. Looking back to Aseara, he wondered if she wanted him to try it right then and there.
It seemed she was content to move on with the discussion during his evaluation. Lessons? Clients? Just what exactly did she do? No matter the thought, she did seem put off with his offer, which was surprising. Didn't all females want to be escorted back home, especially after such a traumatic adventure. Surely she didn't wish to continue exploring with the threat of the muggers still by!
"I merely think it unwise to stay out in such weather and after what just occurred." His voice sounded pathetic to his own ears, and he almost seemed questioning to the girl. And, through it all, he finally noticed how he continued to play with the candy, rolling it between his fingers as he stood in thought.
Clearing his throat, he contiued, "Yes, I would prefer to see you safely home...." And still, he did not know her name.

It was amusing to Aseara at how slowly he was taking the candy, she watched him quietly as a small smile of victory grew on her lips. Perhaps it was a little smug but she was sure the moment he tasted the candy he would know exactly how she felt about the whole thing. He did not try it right away but that as okay, accepting it was the first step. It was probably of a lesser quality he was used to, but she knew the flavours were there and that is all that mattered. Sometimes it was easy to overlook those of lesser rank but sometimes you found amazing quality goods.
“The flavour is berry.” She said in passing for his knowledge. They were her favourite flavour.
“Aseara,” She offered with a smile and inclined her head. “It’s a pleasure to meet you Nuri.” She was glad those etiquette lessons were kicking in because she might have insulted him without knowing when declining his offer for an escort. Aseara looked herself over to see where she was wet and made a face, her backside was drenched and her hair was plastered to her face by now. She still put up her hood anyway to stop it from further getting wet and to hide it from view. She left just enough of her face uncovered so she could properly have a conversation with him.
“I work at the Red Amaryllis. “ Aseara moved out of the alleyway to look up and down the street. Not man were out but there was no sign of the men from before. She glanced back at him, since he was walking her she was going to let him lead unless he did not know where her workplace was. She would be surprised if he did not know where it was.

He gave her a very slight smile as she finally said her name, nodding in return.
Nuri's brows rose to his damp bangs and he felt his cheeks heat slightly at her admission of where she worked. So she was a dancer. Nuri may have never ventured into the infamous club, but he heard enough stories from his father's business partners and his brother to have some idea of what went on behind those doors. The idea of the sensual entertainment that occurred seemed a bit too out-of-bounds for the prude-ish mind he currently contained.
He quickly moved to follower her, noting she didn't offer her arm like his previous companion did. Most likely, it had to do with their gross difference in standing, and he was somewhat relieved - his father had raised him to be a proper Oban, but his mother had raised him to be a gentleman. This situation was rare because both sides refused to get along, and as a result he had no clue how to move forward. So, he simply moved to hold his hands (and the berry-flavored candy) behind his back as he walked, out of the way and one less thing to worry about.
When he finally reached her side, he nodded and began to walk in the direction, letting the rain fall again on his hair and down his cheeks.
"That would explain why you are here in Sulburi." He responded slowly, before adding, "You are very fortunate to have made the journey here and found work. It may seem cramped, but Sulburi is notably one of the best locations in the lands for dwelling."
The pride he had for his land was clear in his voice. Oba was his home, and he was proud to live and serve for his land.

It always entertained Aseara when she told Obans where she worked. The Red Amaryllis did have such a reputation, they entertained nobles after all. However, Afsana had been quite clear on dating and how to behave with the clients. Oh there was the occasional client in the woman’s rooms, but it was a well-kept secret among the younger entertainers and veterans were tight lipped. Not everyone participated in such activities, but there were enough to give it a reputation. She hid her smile this time, it would be rude to point out his reaction and one day she might see him at the establishment.
Aseara followed next to him, silent until he spoke up.
“I was recruited.” Aseara said and glanced at him. “Afs—The owner wanted to bring in the exotic to her patrons. For the Obans who do not leave Oba but want to see Earthlings preform. She was at my village when she saw me dancing and gave me the job.” She wanted to make it clear that she had received the job because of her talents and not because she was a pretty face. It helped to be pretty, but on still had to have skills. Some of the girls had found that out when they had been sent back home.
“What about yourself? Are you a soldier?” He seemed very conservative with his hands behind his back and all.

It did make sense, once he thought about it. Obans were all dark and firey, with smokey colors and flaming passion. Just the sight of Khalel, with her spotted skin and bright eyes, was something that caught him off guard. Despite his best intentions, he was curious and attracted to the strange beauty. At the time, he assumed it was because of the fact she was still Oban.
Glancing toward Aseara, he tried to look at her as he would assume most Oban would. Her light hair was shocking, but her bone structure was soft and pretty enough. Her skin was different, and she seemed a bit too pale compared to everyone else in the area. After a long moment of just thinking it over, he just couldn't picture the attraction most Oban had to the other Earthlings.
Then again, he never spent this long just trying to figure out it another was attractive. Obviously then, it must be her dancing, and she must be skilled at what she does. Maybe there were different dances based on the culture that drew others in?
"Oh? No, not quite..." he said sheepishly, "I have only just begun my training, and still haven't even found my focus. Mostly we just go around fighting with all of the different weapons until our superiors decide to show us pity"
His small, half-smirk crossed at that point, and he flashed it her way in a friendly manner.
"I must admit, I've yet to have the chance to venture into the Red Amaryllis...it must be an interesting place with so many different Earthlings there to perform." He wasn't sure what caused him to have curiosity, but Nuri was not one to leave a question unasked. Additionally, they were growing closer to the establishment, and he wasn't sure if he would see her again. Why he didn't just stay silent and walk, he wasn't sure.

“Well you certainly know how to handle yourself quite well with a broom.” Aseara chuckled softly teasing him. Then she went to a more serious tone since a focus was important. “I am sure you will find your calling one day.” It looked like superiors here were quite strict, she had heard about the Oban army, formidable and large from her understanding. If they were training them in all weapons until they picked something that made for quite deadly warriors. Aseara didn’t’ see herself ever using a weapon; she could not even handle a kitchen knife properly without cutting herself.
“It is my understanding that there is at least one of every kind. We have singers, dancers as myself, entertainers, musicians, and entertainers.” Aseara sounded like she was selling the place but it was not all that bad. They were so close to the entrance now that Aseara could see the entrance. She stopped there since she did not want him coming in in case someone thought she was coming back with a boy and that was a no no. She thought about inviting him since he’d admitted to never have been inside before, Afsana would certainly be happy with any customers she brought in.
“Well, if you are ever in the neighbourhood you should come and visit,” And then she reddened because it sounded like she as asking him to visit her. “I am sure you’ll find great food, drink, and music here to fit your liking.” Aseara added quickly and she bowed again hopeing to hide her red cheeks. “Thank you again for saving me and walking me back home Nuri. It was a pleasure meeting you.” She did not know if she would ever see him again but at least she had thanked him and gifted him so it was a pleasant parting.

Nuri too felt his cheeks grow red at her praise and suggestion. He felt he was close to selecting his weapon, and class, of course, but it still was very much up in the air. The pressure all the prentice Oban had to move forward in their training was immense, and he wasn't one to back down. But what he wasn't ready for was her invitation for him to come visit later, nor the idea of what might go on inside.
He really was clueless.
"I will consider it...although I'm not certain it is really my sort of pastime. Seems a bit...rambunctious." He lifted one of his hands to scratch his head, before realizing he still had the sweet in his hand. He stopped again, and looked to her for a moment as if to consider if he should give it to her or not.
"Aseara...it was an honor to walk you home. I hope you will be more careful if you go out in the rain. I wouldn't like it if I heard that you got hurt." He paused at that, before flashing another lopsided smile that lifted the cheek that had his crystals, "If I do make it in, I would enjoy seeing you dance...you must be something special to be asked to travel all the way here. Farewell, Aseara."
With a bow of his head as a move of farewell, he turned and moved off into the rain and back toward his home. It took only a minute for him to turn the corner and be lost in the downpour, and once he was out of sight he made move to pause and look down to his hand once again. The wrapper crinkled under his calloused fingers, but he was able to quickly pop the sugar flower into his mouth. The burst of flavor was almost immediate once it his his tongue, and it caused a visible reaction on his face.
"...berry..." He mumbled softly around the candy, before he started back on his journey home.
