User ImageIn the overcast air surrounding him Patricius hadn’t actually intended to journey during the day. But when the clouds cast their differing colors of gray and black he couldn’t help but notice that his eye wasn’t as… well, wasn’t as oppressive in allowing him to travel. It wasn’t yelling at him, screaming his name and damning him to all kinds of hell. Which, was normal most days, and a fleeting memories other days. So, it should have came to no surprise that Patricius was glad to have a small reprieve.

For once he could travel along the dirt paths, grass, trees, and leaves with the creatures of the day. For once he could chat, if he wasn’t so shy or had his stutter, with the soquili that considered themselves in the category of day creatures. It also came to no surprise that his ability to understand and communicate what he was seeing and feeling was so foreign. His hide wasn’t hot, his skin didn’t crawl, he wasn’t on fire.

Granted, that didn’t stop him from being nervous. Patricius was always nervous. Jumpy… maybe. It depended on what was going on around him. Most of the time Batty would come to his aid. But right now Batty was soundly asleep in his bangs, snoring lightly. Batty could be considered silly for sleeping during the day, but Batty was, by his very nature, and nocturnal creature. He couldn’t see during the day time hours, even in the overcast weather they were having this day.

Patricius stopped and sniffed the air for a brief moment. A salty freshness invaded his nostrils. Rain was coming. And it was coming fast. And as if to validate his feeling thunder rolled in the distance, shaking the ground beneath his hooves. Shelter had to be found, and fast.

Eala Liante huddled in the dark cave. She could feel a storm coming on and she had taken shelter. The whole world was a stranger to her and her faith was fragile. She was to keep the Old Gods, she was to live on and find others. But it had been months and there had been no others. She closed her eyes in silent prayer.

Let me not be the last. Let me find the others. I know they exist. Please don't leave me alone in this world. Let me find my people. Let my faith be strong, do not let my weaknesses consume me. Do not let me fail this task you have set before me. Hear my prayers, hear your servant. Please.

She opened her eyes to see the dark silhoutte of a male standing in the edge of the cave. Maybe her prayers had been answered. Maybe he was one of he people or knew something.

The smell is what caught him first when he came to the mouth of the cave. Still salty, still fresh, but there was something more. Something he could not quite place since he could not see. What was it? What was that smell? The curiosity was getting to him despite his desperate need to make sure everything was safe before he even made his presence known. It didn’t matter if it was his father, his aunts, uncles, and or cousins. He always had to be sure it was safe. If it wasn’t, and because he was technically, well, not really technically but one hundred and ten percent completely blind, he could be taken advantage of. And that was just not okay.

He gently shook his head to get Batty’s attention, to wake him up and have him investigate. But, on this particular day Batty just wasn’t having any of it. He could hear his friend, groan, whine, and complain to the end’s degree…. And he didn’t budge. This alone made him quite nervous. He always relied on Batty to do him right. And now he was completely ignoring him. Possible karma? His father did talk to him about that a lot. So it wouldn’t surprise him if that was the case. Pat slid his ears back just a bit, this wasn’t okay.

The thunder boomed loudly, effectively startling him and making his hindquarters slide around in their inate need to run and hide and never come out again.

No.

Not going to happen to day. He was going to be brave. So, with a heavy sigh he steeled himself and headed inside, just a bit to get out of the open world, and covered himself in shadows. And in doing so his eye twitched, knowing full well he was covered in the safety of the darkness. With each cautious step in his eye twitched. It became more and more insistent on opening when it knew he was completely encased in darkness. And it began begging him to be open.

No…. not now….

But despite his wish his skin began to separate and bleed. And while his vision came into focus his hiss of pain, albeit, unintentional, would have alerted whoever, or whatever, was in this cave with him.

Eala saw him moving foward. He was much too dark and red to of her people--they were all ice where she came from. She watched the blood began to flow and an eye at an odd height blinking and shaking as if to open. She could feel her heart pulsing so loudly that she knew he must hear it. She was being given a trial.

What was the proper recourse? Words, she should speak to him. Give me words.

"I will not harm you. We can share this cave until the storm is over or I can leave if you want me to go. I will not fight you. I am for peace.'

‘Why do you fight me?’ his eye seemed to be hissing at him, ‘Why do you force me to make you bleed? This is your own fault stallion. Not mine.’

Patricius grit his teeth together hard, his vision completely focused and alert despite the blood oozing down his chest and onto the cold harsh stone below. A soft pitter patter of warm rain stained red. He hated his eye, hated what it entailed, what it had brought to him. But yet, in a cruel twist of fate it was his only way to survive, his only way to truly see the world around him. In some ways he wanted to believe that what his eye allowed him to see were all lies, and the truth of the matter was that when he was relying on only his other senses was the true outside world. And yet he doubted he could actually believe his own lies in that regard.

His demonic eye scanned the cave surrounded them, taking in all of its features. Some stone slicked smooth as frozen over melted ice, dangerous and deadly. Other stone was jagged and dirty, sharp as a knife’s edge and capable of tearing one apart. Where was he in this world? A place where one extreme met the other? A walking oxymoron? It reminded him of himself. And for that, Patricius did not appear to be in a mood to relate to himself. Whether it was the rain that was beginning to put him in a sour mood or something else, something more deep in his being, he didn’t know. But really, he didn’t feel the need to speculate. Not now.

Soft words came to him then, breaking him out of his inner musings, startling him just so that his hindquarters slid again. It wasn’t enough to make him fall, but it was enough to warrant his, and his eyes, full attention. It swiveled quickly to gaze upon the source. Glowing darkly at the form that would cause it, and its owner shock, a stark difference from the mind of the owner. If it could hiss and growl at the form, Patricius was sure it would have.

He looked upon the prone form of a young mare, pale as the ice storm now raging outside. The clatter of ice upon the ground. And yet, she was soft as well. Drenched feathers lined her head, neck, and she had nothing but feathers for a tail. What was she? A walking oxymoron like himself. Who was this creature and, more importantly under normal circumstances, where did she come from?

At her words Patricius’ eyebrows raised into his hairline. Did she think he thought she was here to harm him, or him to harm her?

“You do not have to leave,” he spoke softly with just a hint of hesitance in his voice, “I will not harm you….I am not death incarnate….despite what my body may show to you….”
