The tide came and went, the moon changed its cycles, and the days increased since she last saw another living soul besides her darling Inky. She was locked in a tower of stone, bound by duty to remain in this location until her betrothed came and took her away from this place. Her tower of stone was in actuality a large cave near the edge of the cove. A small river of salt water flowed from the sea into the cavern, creating a small pool which was Inky’s domain. Surrounding the cave and a small section of white sandy beach is a fence of jagged rocks that had been made deadly sharp by continuous beatings of the ever changing weather. This was her cage, what kept the princess locked inside.
When she was on the white sand she could see the ocean, the foamy waves as they crashed against the shore called out to her, begging her to dishonor her family by leaving the confines of her cage. No matter how much it begged and pleaded, Molokai le Mahina did not leave. Sometimes she would spot soquili in the water, but they never came close enough for her to call out. What would it be like to swim in the deep depths of the ocean? Having her hair move not with wind, but with currents?
With a sigh the mare turned away from the ocean, it was not good to dwell on those thoughts; they would only make her break her vow and that vow was all she had left of her absent family.

Earyende swam beneath the waves, the water near her foaming with soft bubbles. When she surfaced she saw the silhouttee of a kelpie with a long beautiful tail. She was encrusted with shells, coral and on her back hung a little octopus. The mare looked so forlorn, so absolutey wretched that Earyende warred against her shyness.
Finally, she settled on drifting closer to the mare. She was adorned with baubles her hair flowing as though she was in the sea. She wondered why the mare was alone so far from anyone else? Was she lost? Was it on purpose? Was she afraid?
Earyende pulled herself to the edge of the cave rocks and stopped. If the mare became threatening she could run.

A noise behind her caused Molokai to look back at the sea, a beautiful blue mer the color of sea foam sat upon the rocks. Her mane was long and blue flowers were woven within the long locks. Surprise filled the pink mare, and she blinked a few times trying to make sure that what she was seeing was reality and not a figment of her imagination. “H-hello.” She bowed her head in greeting, “I am Molokai le Mahina.” She cocked her head to the side, she was not sure what to do next. The mer could not come into the tower and Molokai could not leave it. Where was her tutor in etiquette when she needed him? Her octopus friend uncoiled from her back and blinked his yellow eyes at the ocean dweller, “And this is my dear friend Inky.” She paused again and shifted awkwardly, “I’m sorry, I do not know the proper protocols for this sort of thing. I can’t invite you in, Inky’s pool would not be large enough for you and I can’t leave…” Her words trailed off and she looked at the mare, unsure how to continue.

Earyende watched the regal mare. She was seemingly sweet, even kind. Her name had a beautiful sound to it, like ocean waves and salt. She tested it in her mind and smiled at the luminous little octopus on her back. Inky, that's what she called him.
She tried to force her name through her mouth, but couldn't find her tongue. She was overcome with fright. It took her several pain-staking moments to get it out. "Ea-Earyende." Her face felt red with frustration. "I'm. Fi-fine here."
Then the words hit her. She couldn't leave? But why? She pushed through her anxiety. "Why- why can't you leave?"
She breathed deeply. This was the most she'd talked to anyone in well ever. Well maybe not that long, but it did seem like it.

The ocean breeze tickled her nose, the scent of salt was her constant companion, it calmed her but it also reminded her of the duty she had to her family. The smell made her happy and sad at the same time. The Sea Princess bowed her head to the blue mer, “It is a pleasure to meet you Earyende.” Molokai looked at the mer, the spot she sat allowed for ocean waves to constantly soak her, it really was the best place for the sea mare.
She had not meant for those words to be spoken, it always seemed to make things worse. Soquili saw her as a simpleton because she could leave easily enough but yet she stayed because of a duty to a family that had abandoned her years ago, “I am bound by duty to stay in this tower and remain pure like a pearl until the day my betrothed comes and takes me away. It has been many years that I have been here and each day the temptation to leave grows ever stronger, but I know I must not, for if I leave it would dishonor my family. And as the only daughter of the King and Queen I am not allowed to have silly whims of leaving, it is my fate, my destiny to be bound here and to be rescued by the prince.”
It sounded like a fairy tale, but one without a happy ending. Molokai sighed, how many more years must she wait for her prince to come? Would he ever come?
